Word is that the first Officers trial in the matter of Freddy Gray will start just after Thanksgiving. Gives plenty of time for the down town looters to get their Christmas shopping done early. On the plus side,Defense has told Judge that Prosecution is just now releasing evidentiary witness statements along the line of "Dude was tossing himself back and forth in the van like a crazy man". Little things like that might be worth knowing about when you're being charged with Murder. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 01, 2015 09:10 AM (VPLuQ) 13

From the SC officer's murder article Vic posted this a.m.
http://fxn.ws/1OIqZuX Joan Woodward, 81, lived next door to the officer's parents and said she had known him since he was a baby. She said Wednesday afternoon that she'd just visited with his wife and baby. "She said she was so fortunate that she had him for that length of time," Woodward said. She remembered sneaking candy to the officer when he came to her door as a child, and she called him "a special human being." "When my husband died eight years ago, he was so sweet," she said. "He came and sat with me. God always takes the angels." Sure seems like it, too many times. Posted by: mindful webworker is swamped at October 01, 2015 09:24 AM (Z8+SR) 48

Re: electronic medical records from last thread.
I work in that industry. Spent several years at the software company that develops an EMR and currently for a hospital system on the team that maintains it. As with most things, it's not the idea that's bad, per se, you just can't legislate competence. EMRs are a good thing and when implemented well do increase then quality of patient care. All the top hospitals have used one form a while now. But when the federal government comes in, they confuse cause with effect. Just saying that a hospital must use an EMR or else won't make the poor quality hospitals better. They'll half ass the implementation and end up with an even bigger nightmare operationally. I like images of Florida from before the land-development rush, which apparently started in Augustine in 1597. People my age have grown up with nothing but the cheap motels, expensive ho-tels, and Canaveral beaches of Fleming's "El Dollarado." Guilty as charged: I own a Naples condo. FWIW this little piece was championed by Sir Thomas Beecham, a medical chemist who made enough money to support his own symphony orchestra and his conducting career. Casual observations while toodling around Chicago includes my first rat sighting (last night, crossing the street in front of us, I nearly ran over him, but missed). He was pretty small, for a city rat.
Bums: the guy with the nice plastic lawn chair and a clearly-printed sign. We're obviously talking upscale professional bumming here. The bum at the bus stop who, with great difficulty, managed to step into the street and pick up a cig butt that might've still had one hit left on it, maybe. Made it back up the curb without falling. The guy who looked like "whatever became of Pigpen" (accompanying cloud of dust and all), walking down the street, begging at car windows: I noticed he had a bluetooth ear-thingy! OTOH, that may be something like the program I proposed long ago of giving fake cell phones to crazies so when they walk down the street mumbling, they can at least look like they're on the phone. For all my un-PC terminology I delouse myself. Posted by: mindful webworker - sorry, no change; do you take MasterCard? at October 01, 2015 10:06 AM (Z8+SR) 187

Up until this year (fourth grade) my daughter was using a number line to add and subtract numbers because it was one of the approved methods. Part of the problem is they try to teach children (seconds and third graders) three or four methods of doing a problem, which really confuses them. The standards in NC require the traditional (and best) method starting in the fourth grade. So apparently the idea of Common Core is to confuse the hell out of them for three years then teach them the way to do it that pretty much everyone learned to do in the past in the first grade. Elementary school wheeled in a TV, Chet Flake yammered on, NO questions could be asked, there was no provision, and the teachers didn't know jack shit. I was set up to fail in math. First year high school little different, the girl next to me asked an algebra question (the one I was about to ask) and for an answer, teacher slapped her face smartly. What did I learn? Learned not to ask questions, and fail every consecutive math class required. Barely graduated. Hmmph. By trade school, I was "type spec'ing", the pre-disital publishing way to order type set, using arcane math formulas. At a tech start-up in 2000 I described the way I did arithmatic to cope, and the Harvey Mudd college Professor/advisor told me I had been "factoring" ("... and that's college level math!") So there, bitches. I coulda been a contender but for that predecessor to Common Core.

Common knowledge here but related and worth repeating in these troubled times: "Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded - here and there, now and then - are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck"!" I'll be living in my car again. I'm hoping to convince the bank that they don't want the place. It can't be sold in the condition it's in, and they want me making payments, and I want to live here as long as I am able. One day, I'm going to put on my pants and go talk to them. Are you sure - do you think it would get media coverage? There were the protests last summer in that small CA town that was a hub for buses moving the illegal immigrant minors. I recall a lot of people upset in a N. MA town when their public schools were overrun with new "students" - with no personal identification, and some of them w/gray hair. Both stories came and went. **** Yeah, it was pretty much a B.S. report. They completely miss the point that there are sources for fetal tissue that do not require the willful termination of a budding human life and the heartless stirring of a puddle of organs on a Petri dish. Fetal stem cells from miscarriages, properly donated and handled respectfully is a very different thing than the active solicitation of mothers to terminate a life and justifying it as "needed for vital research". I'm disgusted. Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at October 01, 2015 11:30 AM (NeFrd) 483

Hmmm. On the one hand, we must sacrifice aborted "fetuses" for the sake of curing diseases, but on the otherhand, we must open our borders and welcome all sorts of foreign and nearly eradicated diseases brought in by people who do not get vaccinations/decent healthcare in their home country. As long as they are vetted, papered, and otherwise from known backgrounds. LOL. He estimated it would take around two years for an individual to provide that kind of documentation. Documentation from where? Germany? Turkey? Reminds me of the churches in Michigan last summer taking in busloads of South American refugees to "resettle" them in small towns across the state. So they can then be given Medicaid, Food Stamps, housing, bus fare, utility assistance, etc. Just what Detroit and the state need. Syrian refugees who have no skills, no education, probably can't read or write their own language let alone English, but have half a dozen kids, grandma and grandpa, three brothers and a sister with three kids. Meanwhile, the current welfare benefits in Michigan total $13 an hour, making entry level jobs, unattractive to those on assistance. Iraqi Christians fleeing persecution at the hands of ISIS are being turned away at the American border despite having family sponsors --- as thousands of Muslims are granted asylum. At least 27 of the targeted minority, known as Chaldeans, have been held in detention in San Diego since entering through the Mexican border this spring. Now, after months of waiting, 22 have denied asylum and sent back across the Atlantic to Europe, as another five await a verdict. In total, America had accepted just 727 fleeing Christians at the start of 2015 --- a fraction of the 4,200 Muslims granted asylum --- and few since. Yet we *must* take 100,000 "Syrians". Evil. The time traveler's conundrum. It doesn't work that way.
Exactly. You can't change the past because that has already happened. So ask yourself, have you ever been back in time to some other time? NO, of course not. If tomorrow, you went 'back in time' that would be your future! See? You can't go back in time and kill yourself, because you would have memories of some stranger trying to kill you, but you survived, you see, because otherwise you wouldn't exist to go back in time, you see? It's all very logical. In the Sarah Connor Chronicles they did exactly that. So they shot the guy, but they shot the old guy not the young guy. And it didn't matter anyway because the old guy had already done the thing that got the young guy in prison where he turns into the old guy. She shoulda shot the young guy. That would have changed everything. Posted by: Hayfield Volkovski at October 01, 2015 11:57 AM (mheYt) Posted by: artisanal 'ette at October 01, 2015 11:59 AM (qCMvj) 548

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Charlotte City Council are discussing whether to create "public safety zones," city areas where people with past arrests would be prohibited from entering.
... isn't this the plot of "Escape From New York" ? ... Under the controversial proposal, Chief Kerr Putney could designate a high-crime area as a safety zone in response to crimes such as drug sales or discharging guns that were committed on public property. Someone who has been arrested for crimes in the area could be issued a notice that they are no longer allowed to enter, for as long as the safety zone is in effect. Entering the zone after being prohibited would be a misdemeanor. Posted by: Snake Plissken at October 01, 2015 12:00 PM (e8kgV) 550
