No actually it really is for protecting privacy rights of students and that is a good thing
College students are adults and should be treated as such, if they lie to their parents about what they are doing in college, then that is on them and the university has no obligation to correct the student's lies or get involved in one side of the dispute or the other.

Mrs Hades and I are in Asheville NC at present; our plans to go to Gatlinburg TN and in the morning start our trip from Cherokee NC along the Blue Ridge Parkway ran into some timing issues. So, in an effort to reduce stress and give us more time to a) sleep in and b) take our time on the Blue Ridge we are going to start here in Asheville in the morning, ending in Boone NC in plenty of time to get checked in and relax a bit before going to the chapel at six.
All that matters to me is that in the end I'll be Mr Hades to her Mrs Hades.
But now, it's been a long and somewhat damp day, so I'm turning in for the evening. Later roonz and roonettez, I'll check in from the road from time to time.

Then spending my time on Oregon Trail.
Then going home and actually learning stuff by reading some books I had that were printed over a hundred years ago.

Yeah the ellipses are a bit worrisome and unfortunately I haven't been able to find a complete original source.
But his statements as presented here do imply that making weapons is somehow contra Christianity and therefore there's a contradiction is doing so and calling yourself a Christian.

She got a 95 (no curve) on her last organic chem lab!!!! She's rocking biostatistics, and has an endoscopy next week. The kidney disease apparently led to weird stomach acid levels, and she has severe scarring on her esophagus. I had no idea that could happen. But she is loving school, and not taking bullcrap classes, and tells me every grade she gets, and then shows me so I can verify.
I am blessed.

Otherwise, the expect hundreds or thousands of students to remember the identity and gender/sexual/pronoun choice identity of the hundreds or thousands of OTHER students in case they ever talk about them (xem? shem?) in the third person or their property.
Because that's what pronouns are for.
And what if someone makes an error or simply doesn't give two sh**s about someone else's (elsen? otherkin's?) choice?

Err, no. I had a girlfriend many years ago who was applying to college. The school wanted her parents's tax returns before she could finish her application. She (being over 18 and having a J-O-B that could pay her tuition) replied that since her parents weren't paying and had no intention of paying or whatnot that such tax returns were none of the college's business. Oh no! Federal law says otherwise: you are a child until you are 26. You have to cough up your parents's returns even if they aren't willing. Sucks to be you between the ages of 18 and 26.
The upshot being: no. If the kids are paying, then they can decide. If the parents are on the hook, then fuck the kids with a splintery broom handle.

These assholes still insisted on all sorts of personal parental info to get her in there. They tried to explain that it was for expenses not covered by her ride. I pointed then to the 529 account I set upfor her in 1997. She has full authority to authorize payments from that.
Bottom line was that there was no freaking way I was giving up all that info to them just because they wanted it. They backed down fast, but the States in question are pretty Red.

I agree with the notion that if the parents are paying, then that entitles them to oversight over their kid's education.
But that is an issue to be worked out between the parent and the student.
I think of it this way. If Dad gives Junior some money to buy food, but then Junior spends the money on smokes 'n' beer, then that deception is between Dad and Junior, and there's no reason the grocery store should get involved in the dispute. Same thing with college. If Dad gives Junior money to go to college, but Junior decides to goof off and skip class, then that is an issue to be worked out between Dad and Junior.

Here's your problem with that. The Supreme Court banned the use of IQ tests to select candidates for jobs in the 1940s. So there are some steps you can, some job-specific tests I assume. However, there will always be a cap on how far you can take that.

Let them learn the basics inside out, then introduce them to how to do stuff with computers much later.
In Nigeria, we couldn't use scientific calculators in high school (log tables FTW) and we didn't even start using calculators right away.
School was harsh, so those of us who ended up here found college not too bad. I majored in chemical, and I found high school in Nigeria harder than college. (But I was fortunate to attend a secondary school that was excellent at the time.)

I actually do have a few smart students in my class this semester. I just gave my first exam, and generally my first exam is a little on the hard side (to give them a small scare about the amount of work that they are expected to do) and I had 1 student in particular that exceeded my expectations, it was great. Problem is, this student is smart but has no idea what he wants to do yet. :/

yeah I kinda wish that students weren't allowed to use calculators until they graduated from highschool. I would love to have more students who could estimate answers by doing quick math in their heads. Or even just be able to do easy math without calculators at all. I swear to god, I once saw a student punch into his calculator "17 * 1". It was disturbing.

When I passed the Foreign Service exam, it was apparently an "ANOMALY" because I was a woman. So they called me while I was in training, and wanted me to join a suit because the test was "male-centric." I told them I passed the damn thing, I chose the cone I wanted, (admin, although I worked in political and consular far more) and I was fine. But the witches behind the class action suit would not give up. Turns out, they were all mustanged secretaries who couldn't pass the exam, and could ONLY, according to the State Department, go into admin careers. So, yeah. That is what happens when you have a career specific exam. Someone won't pass, and then will have a hissy fit that it wasn't fair. Meanwhile, look at the mess State is in. This is why.

Calculators should be banned in classes generally. If you can't do it in your head or with a pencil/paper, then you don't know how to do it.

Here's your problem with that. The Supreme Court banned the use of IQ tests to select candidates for jobs in the 1940s. So there are some steps you can, some job-specific tests I assume. However, there will always be a cap on how far you can take that.

I've thought about all of this and don't see a u-turn at all for Western Civilization. There are hard lessons that need to be learned from our little socialism experiment. It's easy to give free sh!t away and apparently impossible to stop until the money runs dry.
That being said, I do hope that events can be guided somehow so the political class, the media, the academics and the crony capitalists are turned on by the mobs.
After going through all of the stages of grief, at points consuming more alcohol than I should have and then moving on to my own projects, I do see a day when parts of the West will have more freedom than they ever had before. The road to there from here is going to be a bitch though.

RPN is more natural and similar to how one would do it by hand or in their head.
Can't stand algerbraic calcualtors... have to stop and recombobulate it rather than naturally zip through the computations. Also easier when you are manipulating multiple items in the stack.
For example: "(3 + 3) * (2 + 2) ="
It doesn't require understanding.
Mentally or by hand you'd add 3 + 3, and then add 2 + 2, and then multiply the answer from the previous two.
E.G.:

Of course, the first calculators I used were all RPM. The HP 15c is still the best calculator ever made.

It rained on us very slightly, but remained mostly cloudy all day. Which is good, as I was stuck inside for most of it. I did get out into the weather for a bit, which was nice. Depending on how things go tomorrow, I may go sit on a bench in the park with the clouds and enjoy it, as I should have done today.

My Hungarian PM link was in response to the discussion here of Euros just taking it (the mass unplanned chaotic migration barely even still posing as a "refugee" flow).
New Europe (thanks Rummy) is not just taking it, they're going nuts (in context). My hope is that whatever damage these worthy small countries suffer can be mitigated by a quiet or even overt pushin of migrants into Germany, which is their preferred destination anyway.
Prediction on major European countries: they'll lay back and take it. In different ways, but bottom line, Europeans are ruled as much as they ever were in pre-"democratic" times, they have no choice (outside of finding responsibility and self-respect and acting, that is).
Some will note how astonishingly more like Europeans "Americans" have become, seemingly over-night. That is, compliant rules subjects, not independent responsible thinking citizens. Those "some" have a point, don't they?

The changes are always a long time coming, but when they hit critical mass, society totally inverts itself all of the sudden.
Quebec used to be socially conservative and religious... and then one day *POOF* they became secular Leftists.
Take another example: Denmark. In the 1960's they pretty much banned all porn and then *POOF* they legalized everything... including child porn.
Perhaps we are seeing that now with Gay Marriage, "transgender" usage of bathrooms, amongst other things.
I doubt thing will reverse. Perhaps the best we can hope for is to preserve tomb-like what remnants we have of American civilization for future archologists to discover and at least know we existed...

And for the record, as always, I have to note that marriage redefinition did not become popular, at least it was not chosen when offered as a choice in almost all actual electoral situations. It's perhaps the best/recent example of the collapse of rule of law - so, an institutional problem, not a case of an actual change in public opinion. A fundamental cultural question in which the courts have no plausible role, on which the public (the culture) is consistently taking a certain line (with only a few exceptions). And then boom!One power-drunk lightweight and his four barking seals impose the change on the culture.

If your first contact with the Baptists doesn't work, try again with the Sikhs. No truly holy man can deny a man's concern for his daughter and grandkids, and you will gain unexpected, but stalwart, allies.

I have half a dozen of those plastic jars filled with nuts, bolts, and washers that have been put through the AOP cleaning regimen, waiting to be sorted. And waiting, and waiting. Scarcity of round tuits, yannow.
To clean rusty, greasy, cruddy small hardware: dump 5 pounds or so into a cement mixer. Add water, and about 1/4 pound of caustic soda. Tumble for a an hour or two, and rinse with several changes of fresh water, then spread out on cloth-covered tables in the sunshine to dry. Does a fine job. Warning: brass and aluminum parts may be severely etched or dissolved.

Have never been to a Del Taco (grew up in SoCal).
A friend who has legit serious back/neck issues from work injuries was in the CA disability system for a while. He's well-meaning but pretty NPR-clueless on public spending/public sector etc, and he was apoplectic about the abuse and waste he was exposed to, at every turn. Thought I saw a serious estimate that fraud in the CA worker's compensation system alone is in the tens/hundreds of millions of $$$ - that's million, fora state program.
And not one chance - in a million - that anything will ever be done about it. And very likely - 10 to 1 - that it will get significantly *worse*.

Then they pop in the DVD of the sub rosa, and there's the sad, so-badly-hurt applicant at his house lifting weights, working on his car, doing jumping jacks, wrestling a bear... ;-)

He's a good citizen, and fairly practical on medical things - likes to keep it simple, do less rather than more, etc. - and he was constantly having to turn away suggestions from doctors, therapists, et al that he considered clearly just nest-feathering waste of $$. Yep, most think it's just a name (and the original buildings had the mission-style facade with the bell), but it's a *proper* name.

Their signature 'mission' style restaurants are slowly dying out in SoCal. Most have been remodeled for larger retail space but some have been sold because of poor siting.
There are a few 'mission' restaurants that were sold off to independent taco joints. Still funny to pull up to what looks like a Taco Bell only to see "Mani's #5".

The original Taco Bell in Downey, California, built/opened 1962, is (or perhaps was) in danger of being torn down, from what I read about a year ago. It's probably gone by now (it was no longer owned by the chain).

I actually think it's funny, the whole surreal Syria debacle. Dunno if the russkis *really* just hit anti-Assad but non-ISIS targets, but it's logical, and good for them, and it's funny. The ridiculous WH spokesman is again using the (always absurd and odd) line that Russia is acting from weakness.
Things are really off the charts, seriously. The US spokesman, concerning affairs of state and active wars, is making ludicrous cocktail-party comments directed to the dumb NPR types who made his job possible (Beltway dimwits and voters).It's a closed loop of mediocrities and lightweights. Of course the broader public doesn't care, as it doesn't about anything that does not affect them directly - nearly physically - in the next 3 hours.

Yes weft, you still see the original Taco Bell buildings and they often are now independent Mexican joints (and often very good, and much better of course than Taco Hell). There's a certain category of Mexican places that don't really belong in the "fast food" category - their food is mostly prepared to order, just quickly. Certain items at some of those places approach true good Mexican street food (but not quite - you're not gonna get mesquite grilled beef in your carne asada taco).
Speaking of history, I think the #2 location for Jack in the Box is close to me. It was a Jack's when I was a little kid, so the timing fits. Still a Jack's location, too. Way back then (mid 60s) Jack's had shrimp on the menu (!), I remember it. And of course tacos - think they were the first American chain to have them.

The one I remember was across the street from a mall that I vaguely recall had "The White House" as a major tenant. It may well have been in Lakewood, 'cause I spent a large part of my childhood in the vicinity. I believe it was on the north side of a major E-W thoroughfare.

You have to remember, the whole faux "constructed of logs with a layer of snow" was in the SoCal climate that seldom ventured beneath 70 degrees. It was always as false as Disneyland -- but just as well-intentioned.

When we were roofing house #2, my dad and I had an argument over his Black+Decker saw blade because he was shoving it through the roofing plywood with a great deal of effort and smoke. Essentially, we'd recast "The Beverley Hillbillies" with Pea Soup in Buellton. Ol'-man Jeb was shootin' at some food, and out from a rock came a bubblin' pea-soup. In subsequent years, they'd excavated down to a sunken grotto far underground, where blind albino slaves constantly refilled cauldrons of soup that were hauled up to the restaurant above and doled-out to travelers.

The original concept was a restaurant. When they actually ran people through it, everyone was too busy watching the show to eat. You can still bring in food and eat it during the show, but few people do.

In the book of Joshua, Chapter 6, Verse 21... when the walls of Jericho collapse and the Israelites take the now-vulnerable city... uhhhmmmm... what tool do they use?
Because in MY Bible it specifically says "a sword."
In fact, my Bible is chock-a-block full of instances where God commands Israel to use swords and other such weapons to kill, kill, kill. David lopped off Goliath's head not with a curling iron, but with a sword.
While it is true, he who lives by the sword will die by it, that doesn't mean that we are to be unarmed, any more than it means we are to be naked or starving. God provides what we need, or so the Bible says.
That includes defense. We trust in God, but we trust that our actions are aligned with his will, too.
Good grief... schooling the Bishop of Rome. It's just so hard to believe.
