Quote of the Day I

"There is all the difference in the world, however, between two kinds of assistance through government that seem superficially similar: first, 90 percent of us agreeing to impose taxes on ourselves in order to help the bottom 10 percent, and second, 80 percent voting to impose taxes on the top 10 percent to help the bottom 10 percent - William Graham Sumner's famous example of B and C decided what D shall do for A. The first may be wise or unwise, an effective or ineffective way to help the disadvantaged - but it is consistent with belief in both equality of opportunity and liberty. The second seeks equality of outcome and is entirely antithetical to liberty."

-- Milton Friedman

Quote of the Day II

Having a two-star admiral say "we can all get along" while standing on the stage in London with a Chinese three-star admiral who says "we can get along if you totally agree with me" is foolish and arrogant at once. It suggests an ignorance of the current security climate, as well as the assumption that our advantages are so great we can appease the enemy without fearing the consequences. These statements also reveal a growing willingness by some in the military to acquiesce to the wishes of political leaders. This is troubling when considered alongside recent news that the Pentagon Inspector General is investigating allegations by intelligence analysts at U.S. Central Command that their estimates had been altered by senior civilian and military officials to better support administration policies and desired political outcomes. Let us be clear: military officers, especially flag and general officers, are not political appointees. Their oath and duty is to the Constitution and the people whose sovereignty it embodies. The rising unwillingness to provide realistic assessments and strategies to protect American national interests is truly disturbing.

-- CDR Salamander in The USN Should Never Have a Low-T Moment

Quote of the Day III

"Barack Obama's not a failure because he was a first-term senator, or even for lack of experience. He's had seven years of presidential experience and, in my mind, he's still failing. Barack Obama has failed as president because his ideas don't work. And they wouldn't have worked if he'd been in the senate for 40 years. And they wouldn't have worked if he was the CEO of a major company. And they wouldn't have worked if he was a governor. His ideas do not work. They don't work in America, they've never worked anywhere in the world. Here's what works: free enterprise, a limited government, a strong national security. That's what we need from our next president."

-- Marco Rubio

Quote of the Day IV

FERPA [Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974] isn't for the benefit of the student. It's a way for the universities to avoid accountability to the people who are actually paying the bills. Note how sometimes students are treated as adults, and sometimes as children. Note, too, that the way they're treated is always the way that's most useful to the university.

-- Glenn Reynolds on why tuition-paying parents aren't allowed to know if their children are even attending a university

Quote of the Day V

The "rich" are never people like the Clintons, who acquired their wealth by the sweat of their brows, toiling in the harsh icy policy-mines of Davos. They're not the guys who make a bundle off some clever bit of tech, sell the company, then pledge to spend a fraction of their fortune on outfitting polar bears with inflatable vests to help them survive their imminent inundation in the boiling waters of the Arctic. They're not people like John Kerry, who married his way into a pile of money derived from a ubiquitous condiment; they're not people like Apple CEO Tim Cook, because c'mon, he's gay. They're not the Kennedys, because the Kennedys could strike oil on their Hyannis Port compound, pay African orphans a dollar a day to work the pumps by hand, build a pipeline that ran through a protected Monarch-butterfly preserve, and the media would still hang halos over their heads because JFK was martyred in Dallas by a free-floating toxic cloud of right-wing hatred that inhabited the brain of a well-meaning Marxist.

These are rich people, but they're good rich people, because you can imagine any one of them writing a check to Planned Parenthood with the words "keep up the excellent mammograms" in the memo line.

-- James Lileks

The Great Stagnation: The Typical Male U.S. Worker Earned Less in 2014 Than in 1973

The typical man with a full-time job-the one at the statistical middle of the middle-earned $50,383 last year, the Census Bureau reported this week.

The typical man with a full-time job in 1973 earned $53,294, measured in 2014 dollars to adjust for inflation.

You read that right: The median male worker who was employed year-round and full time earned less in 2014 than a similarly situated worker earned four decades ago. And those are the ones who had jobs.

Pope Francis: People Who Make Guns or Invest in Gun Companies Shouldn't Call Themselves Christians

"If you trust only men you have lost," he told the young people in a long, rambling talk about war, trust and politics after putting aside his prepared address.

"It makes me think of...people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn't it?" he said to applause.

He also criticized those who invest in weapons industries, saying "duplicity is the currency of today...they say one thing and do another."

Note that making a gun is neither good nor evil in itself - it's the actions of the person wielding it that determine this. It's also interesting to note that the heavily armed Swiss Guard rely on the very weapons made by these 'un-Christians' to protect the Pope's life.

Report: Computers 'Do Not Improve' Pupil Results

And heavy use actually makes things worse:

A report issued by the UK's Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has evaluated how technology in classrooms affects test results, and found that the availability of computers provides "no noticeable improvement" to students' test scores. According to the report, "Students who use computers very frequently at school get worse results." Also, "high achieving school systems such as South Korea and Shanghai in China have lower levels of computer use in school." The organization warns that classroom technology can be a distraction if implemented unwisely, and it also opens the door to easy ways of cheating.

Just as there is no royal road to learning there is no technology-based road either.

Making Everyday Conversation a Micro Hate Crime

Scripps College, a private all-women's college in Southern California, is giving students ten pronoun options to choose from in their student portal accounts - including "hu, hum, hus, himself," "Just My Name Please," and "None"

It's not clear what the hell students who choose "None" are supposed to be called, especially since "Name Only" is another option. Are they (oops! I said "they!") asking to not be spoken to at all? Because that sounds like a microaggression.

The other eight options are "E/Ey, Em, Eir/Eirs, Eirself/Emse," "Per, Per, Per/Pers, Perself," "Zi, Hir/Hirs Hirself," "Ze, Zir, Zir/Zirs, Zirself," "They, Them, Their/Theirs, Themse" (used as a singular pronoun) and - yes - the archaic "He, Him, His, Himself" or "Her, She, Hers, Herself."

This list of pronouns, as well as a pronunciation guide for those insensitive bigots who don't already know them by heart, was provided to the College Fix.

Ah fuck it  let's just go full scandi and switch over to Danish or Swedish then.

okay I like Glenn Reynolds a lot but on this point he is wrong:

"FERPA [Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974] isn't for the
benefit of the student. It's a way for the universities to avoid
accountability to the people who are actually paying the bills."

No actually it really is for protecting privacy rights of students and that is a good thing

College students are adults and should be treated as such, if they lie to their parents about what they are doing in college, then that is on them and the university has no obligation to correct the student's lies or get involved in one side of the dispute or the other.

I think it's more that modern art isn't concerned with the audience at all, except possibly to despise them. It's now more important to express one's inner artistyness. Had several art classes years ago that focused exclusively on that idea.

I did well, but there were plenty of friends who didn't, and who either came back the next semester without their cars, or stayed home to work for the money to go back. I understand caveat emptor, but it did seem like helped the buyer (mom and dad, who are paying for little Cis-john to get an education) know that they were in fact purchasing said product.

Yes, Obama's ideas are BAD for America, but hey, they seem to be working out for Obama and the Democrats (to a point), because, get this, we don't really have a viable opposition party. The Republicans have been successful in capturing the majorities in many State assemblies, and governorships, but...then what? They cannot manage the Federal government, when elected.

Tell me Marco, why is Trey Gowdy not running for re-election?

75 Quick drive-by comment:

Mrs Hades and I are in Asheville NC at present; our plans to go to Gatlinburg TN and in the morning start our trip from Cherokee NC along the Blue Ridge Parkway ran into some timing issues. So, in an effort to reduce stress and give us more time to a) sleep in and b) take our time on the Blue Ridge we are going to start here in Asheville in the morning, ending in Boone NC in plenty of time to get checked in and relax a bit before going to the chapel at six.

All that matters to me is that in the end I'll be Mr Hades to her Mrs Hades.

But now, it's been a long and somewhat damp day, so I'm turning in for the evening. Later roonz and roonettez, I'll check in from the road from time to time.

78 Alright, I clicked through the links to the actual source. This is what the Pope said:

"If you trust only men you have lost," he told the young people in a long, rambling talk about war, trust and politics after putting aside his prepared address.

"It makes me think of ... people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn't it?" he said to applause.

He also criticized those who invest in weapons industries, saying "duplicity is the currency of today ... they say one thing and do another."

Okay, that's leftist, but it is different from saying weapons manufacturers can't call themselves Christians.

I mean, we appreciated the time to goof off pretending that we were "computering" or whatever, but that stuff wasn't doing shit for our educations.

Just like calculators: you either know how to math or you don't. Learning "Calculator Skills" doens't make you math any better. The kids who can math like motherfuckers will ace your "Calculator Skills" class and your glue-sniffers will still suck at maths no matter how many do-overs you give them.

I sincerely hope this is just for Uni press use. Alumni guides, reporting about students, maybe a reference tool for the campus paper.

Otherwise, the expect hundreds or thousands of students to remember the identity and gender/sexual/pronoun choice identity of the hundreds or thousands of OTHER students in case they ever talk about them (xem? shem?) in the third person or their property.

Because that's what pronouns are for.

And what if someone makes an error or simply doesn't give two sh**s about someone else's (elsen? otherkin's?) choice?

Err, no. I had a girlfriend many years ago who was applying to college. The school wanted her parents's tax returns before she could finish her application. She (being over 18 and having a J-O-B that could pay her tuition) replied that since her parents weren't paying and had no intention of paying or whatnot that such tax returns were none of the college's business. Oh no! Federal law says otherwise: you are a child until you are 26. You have to cough up your parents's returns even if they aren't willing. Sucks to be you between the ages of 18 and 26.

I agree with the notion that if the parents are paying, then that entitles them to oversight over their kid's education.

But that is an issue to be worked out between the parent and the student.

I think of it this way. If Dad gives Junior some money to buy food, but then Junior spends the money on smokes 'n' beer, then that deception is between Dad and Junior, and there's no reason the grocery store should get involved in the dispute. Same thing with college. If Dad gives Junior money to go to college, but Junior decides to goof off and skip class, then that is an issue to be worked out between Dad and Junior.

153 My daughter is on a scholarship ride at her school. Full.

These assholes still insisted on all sorts of personal parental info
to get her in there. They tried to explain that it was for expenses not
covered by her ride. I pointed then to the 529 account I set upfor her
in 1997. She has full authority to authorize payments from that.

Bottom line was that there was no freaking way I was giving up all
that info to them just because they wanted it. They backed down fast,
but the States in question are pretty Red.

160 Report: Computers 'Do Not Improve' Pupil Results

And heavy use actually makes things worse:

This is what I've always thought. It makes the kids' minds soft.

Let them learn the basics inside out, then introduce them to how to do stuff with computers much later.

In Nigeria, we couldn't use scientific calculators in high school (log tables FTW) and we didn't even start using calculators right away.

School was harsh, so those of us who ended up here found college not too bad. I majored in chemical, and I found high school in Nigeria harder than college. (But I was fortunate to attend a secondary school that was excellent at the time.)

So they called me while I was in training, and wanted me to join a suit because the test was "male-centric." I told them I passed the damn thing, I chose the cone I wanted, (admin, although I worked in political and consular far more) and I was fine. But the witches behind the class action suit would not give up. Turns out, they were all mustanged secretaries who couldn't pass the exam, and could ONLY, according to the State Department, go into admin careers. So, yeah. That is what happens when you have a career specific exam. Someone won't pass, and then will have a hissy fit that it wasn't fair. Meanwhile, look at the mess State is in. This is why.

We need for fracking oil to be shipped from Canada to the East Coast and traded for water, which could be shipped to California and swapped for political activists and sexual deviants, which could then be shipped to Canada......

These things start in colleges, and we all laught at it because who in their right mind outside of those little insane asylums would buy that?

But it starts there and then is propagated elsewhere.

Soon you will be expected to ask people for their preffered gender pronouns or else you will be guilty of bullying and harassment, and then fired.

I've thought about all of this and don't see a u-turn at all for Western Civilization. There are hard lessons that need to be learned from our little socialism experiment. It's easy to give free sh!t away and apparently impossible to stop until the money runs dry.

That being said, I do hope that events can be guided somehow so the political class, the media, the academics and the crony capitalists are turned on by the mobs.

After going through all of the stages of grief, at points consuming more alcohol than I should have and then moving on to my own projects, I do see a day when parts of the West will have more freedom than they ever had before. The road to there from here is going to be a bitch though.

237 Hat - Meh. RPN is logical in the context of what the machine does, and how it does it. But algebraic entry came about because of its naturalness. Nor is there anything illogical about '1+1 =' 2
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 01, 2015 12:06 AM (OLNwX)

RPN is more natural and similar to how one would do it by hand or in their head.

Can't stand algerbraic calcualtors... have to stop and recombobulate it rather than naturally zip through the computations. Also easier when you are manipulating multiple items in the stack.

For example: "(3 + 3) * (2 + 2) ="

It doesn't require understanding.

Mentally or by hand you'd add 3 + 3, and then add 2 + 2, and then multiply the answer from the previous two.

E.G.:

3
ENTER
3
+
2
Enter
2
+
*

Of course, the first calculators I used were all RPM. The HP 15c is still the best calculator ever made.

My Hungarian PM link was in response to the discussion here of Euros just taking it (the mass unplanned chaotic migration barely even still posing as a "refugee" flow).

New Europe (thanks Rummy) is not just taking it, they're going nuts (in context). My hope is that whatever damage these worthy small countries suffer can be mitigated by a quiet or even overt pushin of migrants into Germany, which is their preferred destination anyway.

Prediction on major European countries: they'll lay back and take it. In different ways, but bottom line, Europeans are ruled as much as they ever were in pre-"democratic" times, they have no choice (outside of finding responsibility and self-respect and acting, that is).

Some will note how astonishingly more like Europeans "Americans" have become, seemingly over-night. That is, compliant rules subjects, not independent responsible thinking citizens. Those "some" have a point, don't they?

All of his fellow leftists decried that the doctor was being "greedy", and by gosh, these doctors must be forced to take more Medicare patients. These doctors were being greedy for not accepting the Medicare payment of $85 per visit. They all thought that the doctor is making $85 per visit themselves and didn't think that money also went to pay rent, electricity, equipment, salaries for nurses, accountants, janitors, lab techs, etc etc.

It really is shocking how many leftists don't live in the real world.

Try that and the Department of Labor will sue you for violating the minimum wage, overtime and record-keeping requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act -- unless you are Justice Sonia Sotomayor. That's right. Since 2010, she has hired unpaid interns as her servants. No other justice does this.

Justice Sotomayor's job description, posted on a Latino Facebook page and other places, tells us that applicants do not need a law degree, but "a driver's license is a must" because the intern's duties will include running "errands outside of the Courthouse." The intern will prepare "lunch and snacks for the Justice," photocopy, and answer the phone. The intern is responsible for his own living arrangements and transportation. She pays them nothing.

The changes are always a long time coming, but when they hit critical mass, society totally inverts itself all of the sudden.

Quebec used to be socially conservative and religious... and then one day *POOF* they became secular Leftists.

Take another example: Denmark. In the 1960's they pretty much banned all porn and then *POOF* they legalized everything... including child porn.

Perhaps we are seeing that now with Gay Marriage, "transgender" usage of bathrooms, amongst other things.

I doubt thing will reverse. Perhaps the best we can hope for is to preserve tomb-like what remnants we have of American civilization for future archologists to discover and at least know we existed...

Hat you have a point, incremental changes can morph into fundamental changes quickly. Wonder about the Quebec example, a little. Always lots of populist and resentment-based "politics" there - and I wasn't aware the "social" conservative profile was gone (outside Montreal, I mean).

And for the record, as always, I have to note that marriage redefinition did not become popular, at least it was not chosen when offered as a choice in almost all actual electoral situations. It's perhaps the best/recent example of the collapse of rule of law - so, an institutional problem, not a case of an actual change in public opinion. A fundamental cultural question in which the courts have no plausible role, on which the public (the culture) is consistently taking a certain line (with only a few exceptions). And then boom! One power-drunk lightweight and his four barking seals impose the change on the culture.

OK. If he has a passport, ship him to Capetown, SA on a one-way tourist visa ticket, with nothing more than whatever money he has in hand. There are enough hostile non-whites from the airport outwards to skin him (literally) that he'll have to learn how to survive, and find his way back, or not.

Not exactly. Affirmative action thinking dictates that aptitude doesn't matter for anything. Friend, post more. Anyone sane is currently worried about things going sideways for themselves or their loved ones -- and when their son is involved with drugs or their daughter is raising children in the absence of a man of substance and honor, there is every reason to be more worried.

And, unfortunately, there is no panacea by which these issues may be escaped. It will be a long, hard -- and potentially neverending -- slog to keep your loved ones safe from harm.

Consider going to NarcAnon for your son. It's not just for people who are addicts, themselves -- it can steer you toward resources and alert you to schemes and stratagems.

And this is going to sound weird and stupid, but find your closest neighbor who is a pastor-level religious person. Get to know 'em a bit, buy 'em lunch, and bitch your heart out about your daughter. Their theology might not float your boat, but having that responsibility with a group of people means that they will have resources and contacts. If your first contact with the Baptists doesn't work, try again with the Sikhs. No truly holy man can deny a man's concern for his daughter and grandkids, and you will gain unexpected, but stalwart, allies.

FCF -- please read @357. I'm giving you the best advice I can, and I truly believe it can make a difference for the better in your life -- and in your kids' lives. NarcAnon can help you move from a feelings-based interaction with your son to a success-based interaction. I have half a dozen of those plastic jars filled with nuts, bolts, and washers that have been put through the AOP cleaning regimen, waiting to be sorted. And waiting, and waiting. Scarcity of round tuits, yannow.

To clean rusty, greasy, cruddy small hardware: dump 5 pounds or so into a cement mixer. Add water, and about 1/4 pound of caustic soda. Tumble for a an hour or two, and rinse with several changes of fresh water, then spread out on cloth-covered tables in the sunshine to dry. Does a fine job. Warning: brass and aluminum parts may be severely etched or dissolved.

Have never been to a Del Taco (grew up in SoCal).

A friend who has legit serious back/neck issues from work injuries was in the CA disability system for a while. He's well-meaning but pretty NPR-clueless on public spending/public sector etc, and he was apoplectic about the abuse and waste he was exposed to, at every turn. Thought I saw a serious estimate that fraud in the CA worker's compensation system alone is in the tens/hundreds of millions of $$$ - that's million, fora state program.

And not one chance - in a million - that anything will ever be done about it. And very likely - 10 to 1 - that it will get significantly *worse*.

Posted by: rhomboid at October 01, 2015 02:32 AM (QDnY+)

398 Oh, and the Del Taco case established (I believe in about 1987):

- California law *requires* any employee, even an illegal immigrant, be provided disability benefits if they get hurt on the job. BUT, employers do *not* have to provide vocational rehabilitation services to them so that they can find a better job.

If you can figure out how that makes any sense, you're smarter than me.

Posted by: qdpsteve at October 01, 2015 02:33 AM (ntObR)

399 rhomboid, you'd be surprised how many employers are defending themselves with the use of what in the workers' comp legal field is called "sub rosa."

That's a fancy name for videotape surveillance of applicants. It's shocking how many of these people who have claimed they can't work and can barely move, have been caught *on tape*, after just *one* secret visit by these investigators, all but doing cartwheels on their front lawns.

Good news is, it's still legal and getting more popular with employers and workers' comp insurance companies by the minute. And they have *no* problem setting up the "injured workers" with fraud charges as well once they find their entire clams are giant crocks full o'shit.

Posted by: qdpsteve at October 01, 2015 02:35 AM (ntObR)

400 clams? claims.

I know of workers' comp defense attorneys who, after sitting through a long applicant's deposition, where said benefit receiver has gone through a long sad litany of all the things they cant' do anymore, just LOVE to say "hold on a minute, I have something for you to see." Then they pop in the DVD of the sub rosa, and there's the sad, so-badly-hurt applicant at his house lifting weights, working on his car, doing jumping jacks, wrestling a bear... ;-)

Yes weft, you still see the original Taco Bell buildings and they often are now independent Mexican joints (and often very good, and much better of course than Taco Hell). There's a certain category of Mexican places that don't really belong in the "fast food" category - their food is mostly prepared to order, just quickly. Certain items at some of those places approach true good Mexican street food (but not quite - you're not gonna get mesquite grilled beef in your carne asada taco).

Speaking of history, I think the #2 location for Jack in the Box is close to me. It was a Jack's when I was a little kid, so the timing fits. Still a Jack's location, too. Way back then (mid 60s) Jack's had shrimp on the menu (!), I remember it. And of course tacos - think they were the first American chain to have them.

The one I remember was across the street from a mall that I vaguely recall had "The White House" as a major tenant. It may well have been in Lakewood, 'cause I spent a large part of my childhood in the vicinity. I believe it was on the north side of a major E-W thoroughfare.

I've dragged Arbalest to the one up here.

437 weft, tako is tasteless (to me, anyway), so the tako taco will need some kick-ass condiments. Squid and octopus, like snails, are merely transparent excuses/vehicles for other things/flavors anyway, so that would be normal.

Garlic truffle oil tacos, with some chile heat?

Posted by: rhomboid

a ) yes, and octopus has to be cooked carefully; 30 seconds fried, or 30 minutes sauteed.

b ) I'm thinking deep-fried for a baja-style taco, cabbage, crema, chili sauce, etc.

c ) but taco taco is funneh... ok, mebbe not, but I need to retire on a beach in Japan soon.

Oh, have we moved on to SoCal chains? Chi-chi's pizza. http://www.chichispizza.com/ourmenu.html In the Saugus location, used to slice in strips -- one diameter, then three-inch perpendicular cuts. Served in a pool of grease with sweet cheese....like nothing I'd ever had before.

And one that's been here before -- http://clearmansrestaurants.com/northwoods/ .

You have to remember, the whole faux "constructed of logs with a layer of snow" was in the SoCal climate that seldom ventured beneath 70 degrees. It was always as false as Disneyland -- but just as well-intentioned.

The money that paid for my sister and I to go to college came from building five houses in the area. When we were roofing house #2, my dad and I had an argument over his Black+Decker saw blade because he was shoving it through the roofing plywood with a great deal of effort and smoke. I used my own money to buy a saw blade from that Builder's Emporium, and the first time my dad used it, it went through the plywood so fast that he almost hit his foot with the saw and he ended up catching the top edge of the plywood in his gut. I spent the next two years saying "I told you so" before going away to college.

The fiancee was very active in Toastmasters, and she did a well-received speech based on my family's Pea Soup lore.

Essentially, we'd recast "The Beverley Hillbillies" with Pea Soup in Buellton. Ol'-man Jeb was shootin' at some food, and out from a rock came a bubblin' pea-soup. In subsequent years, they'd excavated down to a sunken grotto far underground, where blind albino slaves constantly refilled cauldrons of soup that were hauled up to the restaurant above and doled-out to travelers.

515 Dear Pope,

In the book of Joshua, Chapter 6, Verse 21... when the walls of Jericho collapse and the Israelites take the now-vulnerable city... uhhhmmmm... what tool do they use?

Because in MY Bible it specifically says "a sword."

In fact, my Bible is chock-a-block full of instances where God commands Israel to use swords and other such weapons to kill, kill, kill. David lopped off Goliath's head not with a curling iron, but with a sword.

While it is true, he who lives by the sword will die by it, that doesn't mean that we are to be unarmed, any more than it means we are to be naked or starving. God provides what we need, or so the Bible says.

That includes defense. We trust in God, but we trust that our actions are aligned with his will, too.

Good grief... schooling the Bishop of Rome. It's just so hard to believe.

516 Your Pope doesn't make very much sense.

I am sure glad I'm not Catholic.
