Ah, the Disaster of 2014, when the conservatives gave the Republicans total control of Congress. Which, from the POV of the pigs at the trough, might well constitute a disaster.

54 It is amazing to me that the only conversation about "immigrants" is, how they should be allowed to have unrestricted access to other countries.

There is absolutely no conversation about putting collective pressure on the countries they are coming from to make the changes necessary for them to stay in their own countries.

Also, isn't it interesting that none of these immigrants seem to want to settle in places like Russia, China, Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia? Isn't it curious how it doesn't seem like any of these countries are opening their arms, and their borders, to publicly accept them? (Let alone all of the muzzie countries - absolutely nobody seems to want to go there and absolutely none of the muzzie countries wants to have them. Do you suppose that it is because they are muzzies, and the truth is that nobody likes mussies - even other muzzies?)

Even a 1% tax would be better than 0% (though both are actually negative rates as long as EITC is alive). It would put everyone with income 'into the game'.

A local casino once had a weekly poker tourney with no entry fee. First come, first serve. You had to get there two hours in advance to score a spot. After lots of bitching from the players willing to put cash into the tourneys, they changed the rules to a whopping $5 entry fee.

Instantly, the waiting list shrank to near zero. That's the effect of even a small amount of skin in the game.

It came up in the Jake Tapper interview. Tapper kept questioning Carson about saying he wouldn't support a Muslim for president of the U.S. Tapper said you're a Seventh Day Adventist, Carson. Why are you saying things about Muslims that aren't true, when you know people say untrue things about people in your religion?

Carson said: what have I said about Muslims that is not true?

Tapper: that they would not be able to put the U.S. above their religion.

Carson: but if they are devout Muslims, that is true. Their religion requires allegiance to Islam first and foremost, above all things. If a Muslim candidate were willing to reject those tenets of Islam that require him to put Islam first, then I would consider him for president.

Yep, and this is why there are now so many federal laws and regulations that prohibit anybody from asking about the citizenship status of people applying for various types of welfare and other taxpayer-funded government aid.

Can't have the rubes knowing how many hundred of billions of dollars a year their government is ripping them off to fund their replacement with welfare-dependent illegal aliens.

Better to keep the bitter clingers in the dark. Which, BTW, is the same reason the Obama administration has been using buses with blacked-out windows to transport illegal aliens into the country in the middle of the night. If citizens knew the actual scale of the invasion that is taking place under their noses (and being funded with their money), it might upset the poor dears! Better just to do it on the sly, so as not to aggravate the dummies, and then present it as a fait accompli, when it's too late to stop it.

There are too many illegal aliens living here now! We can't deport millions of people! The only responsible thing now is just to make them all citizens!

My son spent over 7 months as a Hospital Corpsman with the Marines there and he mentioned how the Afghan commander had a "pet" boy that he kept on post. He said he was thankful that he never witnessed what they were certain was going on. He was raised with moral absolutes. I don't think he would be able to avoid killing a child rapist if he saw it happening in front of him. I think dealing with that kind of stuff was almost as bad for him as killing people while he was there. It's been a few years and he's still dealing with a lot of the aftermath of finding out just how f'd up the world really is.

164 Let's face it, they've been mistreated for a lot of history by Christianity.

It may seem like a distinction without a difference, but they were mistreated by Europeans (and Asians as well, but since there weren't a ton in Asia, mostly Europeans). "Christianity" - from the Copts in the middle east, to the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholics always preached (though it could not always deliver) patience and respect for the Jews.

I understand some of the Protestant movements were less civil early on (though I know of no specifics, so I could be wrong there), but as a religion Christianity has pretty well always admitted that it owes a great debt to the Jews.

Which doesn't change perception at all, but I do like to point out that the perception is based on what might be generously called "bad press."

He said they were "disrespectful" to the President, never mind the outright hostility that Obama showers on those who oppose him. I don't give a crap about the Confederate flag, but I do care about the Constitution and that piece of paper says they can protest all they want as long they aren't physically harming anybody.

168 One thing I have noticed in my area is that the 'old guys' who used to visit vets in Hines are all dying off. There was a group called Oddfellows who visited and published lists of needed items (pjs, slippers, books, stamps, stationery, etc) and just having bodies not associated with the military or government caring and noting gaps and filling them.

It is very difficult to get to some of the vet hospitals (Hines is through a no-go zone on West Side of Chicago), and younger men do not seem to be joining these service organizations any more.

Lions, Shriners, Rotary, Elks, Moose -- all of them are dying off.

Sorry about the general concern rant, but Hines really bothers me --

But you could tell she was an uber leftist and said this prostitute addict was depressed and gave her RX for antidepressants. I doubt the antidepressants would do much good since she is off her head shooting both heroin and crack. To protect her veins the doctor told her to squirt the cooked up crack up her ass and that it would give her a better high. After seeing the doctor, the woman went on a 3 day heroin/crack binge.

It might not directly affect your individual marriage, but that's not the point. It does affect the institution by making a mockery of it. It also affects free exercise of religion, as we've seen in the florist, wedding cake and pizza cases. I also don't think it's much of a stretch to start seeing the government use coercive measures to bring churches to heel on the issue either, such as through loss of tax-exempt status or other measures. So, while the very small microcosm that is your marriage may very well go unaffected, that's not where it ends.

That means she most likely flunked the bar exam at least once, because those big firms require their hires to take the bar exam at the first possible opportunity, since it's obviously costly for them to keep lawyers on the payroll who can't actually practice law.

So what was Michelle doing staying up all those nights? She doesn't appear to have been studying, or if she was studying and still flunked, she must not be very bright . . . .

The law says we are responsible for these fees, which we recognize. We do not have the money to pay this amount. The Judge insinuated in his order that Brady should pay since he said they were the instigators. If this was a ploy designed to give the appearance that Brady was responsible and turn us against each other, it did not work.

Brady is still fighting for us pro bono and we see no evidence that the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence will not help us raise funds if and when that time comes.

It's not a defense of gay marriage at all.

1- Gay marriage does not exist. It is a nonsense phrase. A same-sex, monamorous couple is not "married" no matter what a piece of paper says.

2- The Gay lobby is all-but-openly admitting that the entire point was not "equal treatment" but another avenue to advance their own agenda - which is the degradation of Judeo-Christian moral culture. And the degradation of Judeo-Christian moral culture *does* affect you.

Note that much (if not most) of our world today - from hotels to hospitals, from civil police to modern courts-of-law would not exist without that Judeo-Christian culture, and in its absence will also pass away.

Correct. Most marriages are not marginal cases, by definition. Middle of the bell curve, etc. so SSM isn't going to affect them in any way. But marginal cases are affected and as more are, the more common the erosion becomes.

So, a couple who would otherwise marry but are dissuaded because of SSM might be: Hyper-religious and believe that church to be polluted and false. Non-religious with little importance attached to marriage. Homophobic. A couple otherwise 'obliged to marry' because of eg pregnancy using any available excuse not to because they're not in love [how that works: If marriage is about 'love' then....].

Dumbest Commenter Ever(TM) weighs in on something he doesn't understand, once again.

Modern medicine in Japan is a direct result of Western missionaries (prior to the Meiji "restoration" which did its best to eleminate such things).

The civil police force in Japan is a direct result of American occupation post-WWII. Prior to that it was an entirely military police/shogunate law enforcement.

Actually that is quite true. Repression splinters society, but the useful part of that for the dictators, actual and would-be, is the side effect is that this creates a society in which no effective resistance can coalesce. (See Tito's Yugoslavia and Maduro's Venezuela for recent example)
So, for the lefties and wanna-be Juntas: do you repression smart, persecute, outlaw, penalize, drag them away secretly at night, use every weapon to beat them down, and make sure no-one trusts anyone enough to even hint the world may be better in any way shape or form, and you will have that thousand year rule.

Odd that the body that was drawn up to fight totalitarian fascism is now being used as a break-out session for a practical "how-to" training, but life is full of irony.

236 Louie Gohmert would make an excellent speaker of the house. So, of course, it is out of the question.

They can always trade food aid for sex with minors, so there's that.

I doubt it. The Senate Republicans are pretty liberal.

244 We brought our lawsuit because we thought it was outrageous that companies could sell a dangerous man an arsenal without getting any information about him, and without making any effort to see if he was a dangerous killer -- which he was. When the killer had left a voicemail with a shooting range, the range operator knew that he was bad news and shouldn't be given access to guns. But these companies set up their business so people just like this killer can arm themselves at the click of a mouse. We wanted to change that. And we still do.

Not sure what her argument is -- that if Holmes ordered via phone instead of online the company would have known he was dangerous?

246 naturalfake: Was there a coup at the Vatican?

Ann Barnhardt wrote on this the other day. Ann's a bit... radical... so I'm sometimes unsure hot to take her. Interesting to see this news becoming more mainstream.

If Cardinals committed excommunicable acts to bring in Francis and get rid of Benedict, might it be like violations of law under Obama and Holder - I mean, who's going to prosecute?

Not my church. But everybody's problem.

Gosh, this is like normal, commenting on sociopolitics on Ace. Might be the last time I get to touch normal this week!

Yes, but obviously the ammo company should have read the purchaser's mind, or consulted their magic 8 ball and looked into the future to see that the customer would use the ammo to kill innocent people.

It's what every reasonable vendor should do!

And the next time somebody kills another person with a power saw or nail gun, Home Depot should have to pay millions in damages to the victim's family!

248 Then I notice the Barnhardt link has already been mentioned and I figure I might'z well go lurk 'til I can get home and stay caught up.

Aaaand... this thread is old. Sigh.

249 Yeah, the zero percent tax bracket (if any) should still require a nominal payment, say twenty bucks, just on principle.

250 I used to love going to Chicago. Still not a bad place to visit, I suppose, but it's not love anymore. That was a long time ago when people still sang songs about the city.

I miss that America.

Just by coincidence, I happened to take my wife to Evanston, Il. yesterday. I had read often about what a chic and upscale little town (suburb of Chi) on the north shore it was.

Was. Perhaps. Street derelicts galore, wobbling around looking in the recycling bins for cans, wildly pierced and tatted "wymyn", and oddly, muslims everywhere. Four out of five women who weren't grrrll lovers wore hijabs, and the flowing robes of muzzieland.
Many languages I didn't understand.
By our staid middle-classness we stood out like a sugar cube in a pepper shaker.

They didn't just insert "same sex" into "marriage" but also the cultural practices they perform.

Marriage will be undermined when you comment that you and your wife are faithfully monogamous, and the homosexual couple? Well, not so much.

Then you will find out what a "hater" you are by considering your marriage as "better" because you honor terms that the homosexuals don't.

But if you go along, that hot blonde won't be "threatening" anymore, but "empowering".
