Publick Occurrences
Forreign and Domestick
Sept. 25, 1690

A very Tragical Accident happened at WaterTown, the beginning of this Month, an Old man, that was of somewhat a Silent and Morose Temper, but one that had long enjoyed the reputation of a Sober Man, having newly buried his Wife, The Devil took advantage of the Melancholy which he thereupon fell into, his Wives discretion and industry had long been the support of his family, and he seemed hurried with an impertinent fear that he should now come to want before he dyed, though he had very careful friends to look after him who kept a strict eye upon him, least he should do himself any harm. But one evening escaping from them into the Cow-house, they there quickly followed him found him hanging by a Rope, which they had used to tye their Calves withal, he was dead with his feet near touching the Ground.

106 Boehner is the first politician in a long time to resign over principle disagreement with the new base.

That's is really no small matter, when you think about it. How often, these days, do you see any political official, whether elected or appointed, take a principled stand that runs counter to the pressures of their position?

It's ironic that his principled stand is against the notion that there are some things that are more sacred than funding a government with money taken from people who haven't been born yet. And this while at the same time refusing to control the killing of not only those who haven't been born yet, but also those who haven't even had enough time to obtain their Social Security card.

111 It's ironic that his principled stand is against the notion that there are some things that are more sacred than funding a government with money taken from people who haven't been born yet. And this while at the same time refusing to control the killing of not only those who haven't been born yet, but also those who haven't even had enough time to obtain their Social Security card.

181 Let me take a crack at connecting the dots...

Let's not ignore what's going on right now. The political class is COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT.

You had Perry's inglorious departure, with his classless swipe at the frontrunner (who he pledged to support if he won). You had Jindal's anti-Trump rant (which was really a sort of concession speech). Walker completely collapsed. There was the assault by their standard bearers at Fox News, most recently with Lowry literally stooping to vulgarity. Over half their voters are rejecting them, it's only getting worse, and Trump has FoxNews in a time-out.

The question is, will they bend a little, will they double-down, with Boehner as a scape-goat? I'm inclined to go with "double-down", but let's remember that after Perot put the Fear of God into the political class, suddenly we had the only balanced budgets we've seen in my lifetime.

220 "I'm inclined to go with 'double-down', but let's remember that after
Perot put the Fear of God into the political class, suddenly we had the
only balanced budgets we've seen in my lifetime."

Just a little reminder here that a lot of what went into those fabled (and VERY BRIEFLY) "balanced budgets" consisted of one-off nonrepeatable external events and accounting tricks.

-- End of the Cold War and matching military drawdown

-- Dot-com boom and huge spike in capital gains revenue

And, most importantly,

-- Rolling over federal debt from long term to short term instruments

What now? Can't shrink the military much further. It's already not mission capable in many areas. Can't wave a hand and imperially decree that Al Gore "create" another Internet; that was a historic one-off technological inflection point.

And that refinancing of Fedzilla's colossal debt into shorter term notes is going to result in an absolutely epic national hangover, a rushed-to-the-hospital-with-gastric-bleeding level hangover, once interest rates rise back to historic norms, as Stein's Law says that they eventually must do.

The truth of the matter is that transfer payments need to be reigned in in a very serious way.

Because right now, transfer payments + other mandatory spending (like interest on our debt) eats up damned near all money coming in to DC.

Everything else is borrowed money.

So yes, we need to cut federal departments. Big Time. Including the DoD. I'm sure there is a ton of waste and inefficiency there where cutting spending and re-designing how things work can actually INCREASE productivity and make our money go farther.

But even if we cut every federal department including the DoD by 80%, we'd still be running a deficit.

The fucking transfer payments are whats killing us.

Well really, all they'd need is some kind of plastic (life jacket or inflatable craft), something to cover the whole (say a plank of deck wood from the boat across), then put the plastic over the hole, use sap to "tack" it in to place, then water pressure will keep it covering it, and the plank in the middle will make sure the plastic doesn't buckle.

I mean, it'd give your bilge pumps a work out, but should get you far enough to find a major shipping line.

Right?

Exactly.

I've further noticed that Trump's insults towards THEM have a certain quality to them. They're simplistic, and juvenile - but never really mean-spirited and bitter. It's attention-getting trash talk, pure and simple. In contrast, the politicians are basically giving him the finger as each falls in defeat.

Where he has gotten more nasty was with people like Rosie O'Donnell, who had gone over the line against the young women in his events.

Would have saved everyone a whole lot of trouble in the long run.

And it's not as though Islamists don't destroy mosques when it suits their purposes to do so. The Islamic State bunch just blew several of them up this week.

Which, by the way, puts in perspective George W. Bush's no-firing-on-mosques standing order for the ludicrous politically correct crap that it was.
