15 From the last thread:
259 I hit my $6,000 out of pocket insurance limit in February when I had two back surgeries. The second one was to fix the infection from the first one. Now 8 months later I'm having more surgery because they didn't notice some problems that absolutely dwarfed the issues they "fixed" in February. I'll be lucky if I'm not in a wheelchair before New Years. Fuck.

What, then, has kept Europe quiet?
The answers are three artifacts of World War II that are rarely mentioned, but should be. None have anything to do with the EU.

One reason is American-led NATO. The treaty organization channeled national militaries into a central armed force led by an American policeman that never quite left its beat after the end of World War II.

Compare and contrast with Iraq.

Now that we have an anti-colonial, anti-american president, what happens in the world? What comes next? What happens when American power is neutered? What happens when the policeman stops policing?

I caught that part. Also caught his "land of the free, home of the brave" at the beginning and the first part of his reference to Moses. But aside from that I'm only catching a few words out of each sentence. He's not comfortable speaking English (he knows very little of it) and it shows. I guess I'll have to read the transcript.

White flecks and streaks are damage on the surface like scraping across a ball. There is nothing in the image or suggested around it for a hundred miles that could make that type of reflection throughout. 82 Prayer request,

Some people heard about this in the ONT several days ago, but for those who didn't I am asking for prayer. I am serving a really dysfunctional church, but beyond being dysfunctional there's something supernatural going on. I've dealt with angry, dysfunctional people before but I've never dealt with a power that's trying to thwart the Gospel going forth in quite this way. Those that reject supernatural explanations of things can laugh and post a dismissive reply and that's their prerogative of course, but I'm serious. It's not that I believe the devil and demons are under every rock-or that, for instance, if I get a flat the devil is trying to thwart me. I believe in individual and human evil but I also believe in powers and principalities (because St Paul speaks of them) beyond the human. I am trying to enlist all the prayer warrior support I can and I am most grateful.

And if Michael the hobbit is around can you do a remote deliverance service? :^)

149 At least 717 pilgrims were killed on Thursday in a stampede outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, Saudi authorities said, the worst disaster to strike the annual haj pilgrimage in 25 years.

At least 805 others were injured in the crush at Mina, a few kilometers east of Mecca, caused by two large groups of pilgrims arriving together at a crossroads on their way to performing the "stoning the devil" ritual at Jamarat, Saudi civil defense said.

Thursday's disaster was the worst to befall the pilgrimage since July 1990, when 1,426 pilgrims were crushed to death in a tunnel near Mecca. Both stampedes occurred on Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice), Islam's most important feast and the day of the stoning ritual.

It's true. The RCC takes such things very seriously. Of course they also like to have documented instances of phenomena before dispatching anyone to investigate or take action; sometimes the answer is sadly quite mundane in nature--we humans are capable of an amazing amount of chaos on our own, frankly!

Prayers being escalated, of course. Even if what you're facing is just mortal humans, such vexation is never a good thing.

177 82 Prayer request,

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 24, 2015 10:26 AM (1+XCd)

Fenelon, I know exactly of what you speak. I am in prayer for you right now, pray for me also, and the spread of the Gospel.

And remember, a spiritual battle must be fought with spiritual weapons. Put on the full armor of God. Also, remember, that the God who you serve has all dominion over this trouble and he already know the outcome. Whatever you are facing, your only job is to 1) do justly, 2) love mercy, and 3) walk humbly with your God. You cannot carry the weight of the final outcome or hold yourself responsible for more than those three things.

I believe in individual and human evil but I also believe in powers and principalities (because St Paul speaks of them) beyond the human. I am trying to enlist all the prayer warrior support I can and I am most grateful.

And if Michael the hobbit is around can you do a remote deliverance service? :^)

Now, obviously God had quite a bit to say about how we interact with others, but it's always, always, always because it's a reflection of our relationship with God himself. I tried to point that out and it didn't go over too well. Although my friend herself is very reasonable and we managed to dialogue quite a bit about faith, and specifically Christian teachings.

Give it to Disney. You'd get Fastpass to lick the holy rock, themed halal burger joints, and instead of throwing rocks at some dopey pillars, you'll have a thrilling high-speed chase through mohammed's Medina, blasting the Joos and infidels with an onboard laser cannon.

272 We used to carpool with a Unitarian family.

Ran into the mom a few years ago and she asked about D'oh Boy. I told her he was in Afghanistan. She looked "concerned" and sighed and said, "Well, I hope he'll be okay." Then she walked away.

No, "I'll pray for him" or anything like that.

This same family sends out a three page "Christmas" brag letter every year. Doesn't actual mention Christ, but goes on and on about the new cars, trips, how their two super Special Snowflake adult kids are doing, etc., etc.

Yeah, I had an atheist friend try to talk up an atheist funeral. Sounded kinda hopeless and bleak to me. I can't imagine if it was for a young kid, like a toddler. You can't handle that kind of death without belief in an afterlife. It's impossible.

Most atheists don't even want anything nowadays. Just to be buried in the ground or have their ashes scattered someplace.

I read through one of her comment threads where they got talking about the local Unitarian congregations and how great they were because they were all about our relationship with our fellow man. "

The problem I have with that is why even get out of bed on Sundays for that? Once it's all about what we can do for our fellow man and God's not in the picture, well, just do charity work, volunteer at a hospital or something.

I guess Unitarians are people who want certain "churchy" things - community, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and stuff like that without all the God talk. Which is fine - but it seems like it would feel rather hollow after awhile. No more "spiritual" than joining a book club or a bowling league.

Don't pilgrims usually, y'know, go home?
________________

You're thinking of Muslim pilgrims, going to Mecca.

The pope was comparing illegal aliens to American pilgrims. You know, the ones who left behind their safer homes in England to come to a wilderness on this continent. The ones who suffered through harsh winters, sometime starved because they had insufficient food, medicine, and other supplies, the ones who had to fight off hostile native tribes. The pilgrims who worked and sacrificed to build a nation where there was none.

Because today's illegal aliens are EXACTLY like that, right? They're not coming here for food stamps and Medicaid and subsidized housing and Obamaphones and EBT cards. They're not coming here and then marching in our streets demanding more rights, and telling us we'd better watch out, because they'll be the majority soon and then we'll have to dance to their tune. No, just like the American pilgrims, they're enduring all kinds of hardships to build a new nation here in the U.S., where no nation exists.

The pope is full of shit, and he should be ashamed of himself for saying things that are not only factually wrong beyond dispute, but also offensive and insulting to the memory of the dead American pilgrims, and to the millions of their descendants who are alive in America today.

352 I would hate to have to answer that question. I do
believe many people who claim to be atheists are merely angry at their

The two go hand in hand.

That's why I stay out of his way on that subject. That's the path I came down years ago, from agnostic to wherever it is that I am today, a somewhat bitchy believer.

There's some Biblical reference to a woman who's having a difficult birth in relation to spiritual growth. That's about how I feel.

I am not suggesting that there is, but it certainly is possible.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at September 24, 2015 12:03 PM (Zu3d9)

No. It isn't possible. People can make up rules but without an outside/higher authority they remain nothing but made up rules that serve no purpose and have no meaning. Anyone else can make up his own rules which are equally valid ... or equally ridiculous, depending on however one wants to characterize them. They are meaningless, either way.

Meaning cannot be found from within a system. Meaning is something that can only be assigned to a system from outside of it.

Lastly, if life is finite and the universe is finite then there is no meaning in anything and cannot be.

526 I say this not to be combative, but rather to address the question philosophically.

I think it is impossible to be an atheist without being a moral relativist. In point of fact, any deeply held 'morality' by an atheist must necessarily and ultimately spring from their own judgement, no matter how many external influences there might be.

Therein lies my difficulty. As Maugham said, 'a personal morality is no morality at all', simply because it is malleable and can be altered at will.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree. I support conservative morality from a mixture of taste (aesthetics) and self interest. What seems irrational about leftist secularist atheist "morality" is not only that it lacks objective basis, which most like Sam Harris deny, but mainly that it contradicts their stated goals. It is ultimately bad for the causes they support. It is bad for everybody.

I think they need a substitute for God, something they can have faith in and take comfort from, and that is government. In that sense they are not really atheists.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at September 24, 2015 12:16 PM (zc3Db)

549 The same can easily be said of any religious belief system. Especially all of the various denominations of Christianity.

I would say it's slightly more difficult to adjust a moral system which is based on an outside force than one that is based on your own reason.

It's not impossible, and it's certainly happened throughout history for people to find religious justifications for their actions, but I think they at least need to seek the justification. I don't believe someone without a religion really does need to self-rationalize their actions in that way.

As an extreme example, Stalin believe that Ivan the Terrible was the perfect ruler, except that his religion made him repentant and, in Stalin's eyes, weak.

Ivan did bad things, but he regretted them and recognized that ultimately he couldn't justify them. Stalin did bad things, and died planning to do more bad things.

Oh and that due to a greying of the world, there is going to be a good slump in the economy that will make the Great Depression look like a minor hiccup. I have visited a friend's hometown cemetary in south LA. No in-ground graves because of the water table so near the Mississippi. Many family mausoleums with names engraved and plaques added over the decades as additional family members were interred inside. Some were well maintained and in good order, others were crumbling away to dust as no one was left to care for the masonry. There was definitely a "presence" on the grounds.

619 Of course not. Perhaps you could explain why so many Christians are also anti death penalty based upon the Ten Commandments. Or is their interpretation wrong and yours is correct?

Do you know what the word "interpretation" means? I didn't make any interpretation of anything. I relayed a FACT to you. It is the Torah that gave us the Ten Commandments and in that same Torah there are laws which carry the death penalty. There is no "interpretation" in this.

And if so, how does that make belief in Christianity any less morally relativistic based upon personal judgment than any other worldview? (Which was my point)

Posted by: Burn the Witch at September 24, 2015 12:26 PM (Wckf4)

I can't answer for Christians. I'm a Jew. And the morals that come from the Torah are not realtive because they carry the authority of G-d. That's the whole point. You can disagree or have another worldview but that doesn't change any truth of the universe. Might my belief in Judaism be untrue? Sure. But if it is true (which I tend to believe) then your or my or anyone's "worldview" doesn't matter.

Look, if you want to think that there is nothing but the physical, finite universe, then that's just dandy. But then you cannot hold any sort of morality (that isn't totally made up and silly) and you can't claim that there is any meaning to anything. In the finite, limited universe, youa nd I and everyone and every thing are nothing but clumps of particles that have no reason to exist and no reason to do anything. And none of it matters because the whole universe eventually dies of heat death and every structure that existed ceases to. In the end, there is nothing - true nothing - and there is no meaning in nothing.

So, you can feel free to do anything that makes you happy because none of it matters. That is what the finite universe logically leads to. There is no escape from that simple cold fact, meaningless as it is ... because in that finite universe everything is meaningless. Just particles bouncing around.

620 "And yet a rather large number of believers are also anti-death penalty based upon the Ten Commandments.

The Reason?

Because early sjw types corrupted "Thou shall do no murder" into "thou shall not kill"

Murdering and killing are two vastly different acts.

If King David had had just chopped off Adonija's head off for no reason that would be murder. If he had chopped off Adonija's head for unlawfull and against God's will for usurping the Throne, that would be an act of exercising High Justice.

It's impossible to be a "moral relativist." The whole concept is a contradiction.

In point of fact, any deeply held 'morality' by an atheist
must necessarily and ultimately spring from their own judgement, no
matter how many external influences there might be.

The
same is true for theists. One possible god tells you not to be a dick,
another tells you to blow up a bus full of children. How do you decide
which god to believe in? If you're willing to trust your own judgment
it's a no-brainer. If you're not then allahu akbar.

NGU, like your phrase "bunch of gutless lunatics" as a handy description for the Congress.

Glad the pope's mumbling seems to be muddling the whole thing.

If a pope speaks to Congress, I want to hear just a few things. Mostly, praise for the role of the US in the modern world, doing more to protect the truly vulnerable, help the truly needy, stop evil, and promote the ultimate human right - freedom - than all other nations (and churches) combined.

Actually, that would be enough. You are now dismissed.

If, as a "moral leader", a pope wanted to comment on, say, obvious pressing priority moral issues - like abortion, slavery, persecution of Christians, imprisonment/impoverishment of people by dictatorships like N. Korea, Venezuela, and Cuba - knock yourself out.

Taking arrogant and illiterate swipes at the rule of law in the country that made that vital concept a global norma does not fit on my list. For that and all the other crap - especially unscientific pagan climate hucksterism - he can STFU.

As for me, cremation, ashes dumped in the Blanco River just east of San Marcos. There's a spot where it runs crystal clear (actually looks blue) where it runs over a limestone bed. Prettiest place I've ever seen.

#544 we buried my aunt's ashes at the double tombstone she bought when her husband died. She donated herself to medical science and rather unexpectedly they returned her in a plastic (supposed to be biodegradable though) bag a year later. It's a small town cemetery so we didn't ask for permission, just dug a hole and put the bag in.
The cemetery in Minnesota where we buried my father in law was a little better organized and required us to buy a vault for the handsome wooden box his ashes were in. We also had to use them to dig up the plot and place the vault and cover it back up. Even in death, someone will have their hand out.

And in my son's Lutheran confirmation class last Sunday, they learned that Gutenberg's invention of movable type was one of the key factors of the Reformation, because without it, instead of a Bible translated into German (by Luther, of course) that people can read for themselves, you have a few handwritten Bibles in Latin that only the Church can read to you. It is impressive how Islam took a scattered group of independent tribes that spent their time killing each other and instead united them to loot, rape, and pillage the people outside of their tribes.

Your condescending, paternalistic nonsense is getting tedious. You opened with it and you're continuing with it. If you think you're talking to an idiot who will shrink away from your combative nonsense, you should probably start thinking.

Now, to address your comment. I'm simply relaying a fact to you. It is a FACT that many Christians interpret Thou Shalt Not Kill differently. You think *I'm* making this up?

The point - which you seem to be missing - is the fact that these different 'takes', 'interpretations', or whatever word gives you comfort, exist as evidence that yes, even well-established religious dogma is subject to individual judgment.

The rest of your comment alternates between strawmen, irrelevance, and more condescendion.

Now, I'm more than willing to continue without such nonsense, but if you want to keep up with that, I'll respectfully bow out.

730 #700 - if it's a small town cemetery, a lot of them are full up or getting that way. In the one where my father in law is buried, they made a new rule you can put as many vaults of ashes (they are about 2' cubed) in each plot as you want so long as they all fit. So you can geta multi-name marker for each plot and put multiple people on that plot if they are cremated. That's really the only way they can squeeze any new people in. For the stone, I recommend getting the ones which haveplaques with the dates because a lot of the carvers we talked to didn'twant to come outfor my aunt's death date becausethe stonewas already in place. I think the problem is she is in a really remote small town and the carvers were all in exurban Dallas, a good 100 miles away. If you go the plaque route (we covered the carving with the plaque) you can glue the plaque on when the time comes pretty easily.

If by "wed to an answer" you men, aware of the factual basis for it, then you're correct. Unless of course you'd like to make an argument that there aren't large cohorts of Christians who interpret that commandment (with respect to the death penalty, or hell, even war) differently. I'm not disputing the fact that you laid out there, I'm simply telling you that there are many that do. They're making a relativistic choice. Which was the point.

Put another way, you're a religious Jew. Do you think Christians are wrong? Do you think Muslims are wrong? If so, you're making an individual choice between competing moral systems. Which, again, was the original point.

739 Caesar, we've had this discussion before, but we are long past the point where the courts have usurped a legislative role, and furthermore proven that they must have their authority reduced due to their capricious and unconstitutional behavior (really a collapse of judicial ethics). Congress can do this.
----------------

Laterally, as the courts begin to rule by fiat, their authority becomes less meaningful. We reach a point where their authority no longer lies in the law, but in their ruling. That authority will increasingly rely upon enforcement, and less upon compliance.

Witness the florist, the pizza shop, ghey marriage licenses, etc.

Something, something, totalitarian.

744 Well that was cool. Just found a new, very secluded park that is actually a leftover military battery location built before the Revolution. It was captured then abandoned by the Brits and their Hessian mercs. Then the French took it over and left to go fight in the Battle of Yorktown. Final incarnation was a gun battery built during WWII to watch out for the damn Hessians again.

Now it's a pretty little park that overlooks the bay but the berms that where built by the original American patriots are still there. Pretty cool spot with a whole lot of history.

But I don't think this earthly existence is entirely meaningless. I think we're supposed to learn something from it.
Posted by: TrivialPursuer at September 24, 2015 11:46 AM (a31sM)

God is also Holy. And Just. And no part of his character can be sacrificed to appease any other part. So his love is meted out in that he sent his Son to bear sin's penalty of death, so that for those who believe they might spend eternity with Him, because he desires that none should perish. His justice is meted out in that the penalty for sin (Death) was accomplished by the only one who could bear the sin of the world on his shoulders (God in the flesh, Jesus). His holiness is meted out in that no sin shall enter his presence in Heaven.

So you cannot with consistency dismiss the idea that God has a standard and accept the idea that he loves everyone. He does love everyone, He also has a standard, and he has made a way for all to come to him.

A man in Utah has already tried to get a marriage license to legally marry his second wife, to whom he is already "spiritually" married, because CULTURAL. It's all coming:

* Polygamy
* Blended polygamy, 2 men married to each other and 3 women married to the 2 men and each other
* Marriage between very close relatives
* Marriage to minor children, including consummation of the marriage. In the Middle Ages, the marriage of children for political and inheritance purposes was done, but, the marriages were not consummated until both parties were at least 13.

We can't work and we had best be able to support ourselves because there is no public benefit to be had. If you want to take advantage of Mexico's cheap labor and less burdensome regulations and build a factory, then you need an actual Mexican to be the property owner and you can do a 99 year lease.

Posted by: Burn the Witch at September 24, 2015 01:09 PM (Wckf4)

I'm a Jew. Not so religious ... but respectful. Of course I think that other religions are incorrect (and islam, which is not a religion, is beyond incorrect). That doesn't matter. My belief doesn't change whatever the truth of the universe is and it is my belief that yields me a true morality - not some made up system that carries no meaning and that cannot be logically argued to be anything more than my temporary amusement.

Look, I also believe that there are Laws of Physics in the universe - that we haven't exactly found but that we have very, very good approximations of. That belief (and it is nothing more than my belief) yields very concrete methods for building things and predicting events (if enough of the initial circumstances are known to a good enough degree). Now, you can argue with me that there are people who don't believe in the idea that there are immutable Laws of Physics or who believe in very different Laws of Physics - and either of them might be correct. There is no proof or reason to believe that there are any "Laws of Physics" that can be expressed in mathematics or any other human language. BUT ... these other people's beliefs in alternate laws (or no laws) don't have any effect on whether there actually are laws and whether mine are correct. That is MY BELIEF and it is a belief that is about something larger than the universe, itself, so it is not relativistic (no pun intended) but very absolute. And it is not that I will it into absolute being but whether it is an underlying truth of the universe or not.

For those who seek any truths about the universe, there is a big difference between various theories of it and we all make our individual choices as to which we BELIEVE is the truth. I don't force anyone else to use my accepted Laws of Physics. I don't care if they do or not, but I have faith that my Laws are the correct mathematical approximations (at this stage). Those laws are not open to my interpretation and are not arbitrary made-up rules. They have certain meaning - as they must come from outside of the physical universe they control. To you this looks like physical relativism. To me this looks like truth and that is the only way a real morality can be constructed. The person espousing it must BELIEVE it to be part of a fundamental truth of existence. As to what others believe ... that is their issue.

It would have passed, but for someone pointing out that polygamy would be legal, so it was indefinitely tabled.
