Given his past positions I don't really believe that Trump has suddenly become a second amendment absolutist. On the other hand according to this article his sons Donald and Eric are way into hunting and shooting and seem to have some influence over his views so he's probably not going to screw gun owners over either. So now you're probably wondering how the sons of Donald Trump Sr., who grew up in Manhattan, became hunters anyway? Were they indeed just rich kids after a bloody thrill? So This Arrived At My Doorstep Last Thursday After a lot of dithering I finally got off my butt and ordered an M1 rifle from the CMP. I got all my paperwork together and mailed it off on a Wednesday and seven days later FedEx delivered this little beaut to my door. Total cost: $630 which included shipping and a nice hard plastic case. I ordered a rack grade M1 which is the lowest grade they offer but I'm totally pleased with what I got. The parkerized finish is almost 100% and the wood is in good condition with barely visible cartouches. This particular rifle was born at Springfield Armory in April 1945 but like most M1s has been refurbished at least once over its lifetime so many of its parts are a mix of WWII-era replacements and the barrel is from 1951. According to the tag its throat erosion is 3 and muzzle wear is 2 which are well within spec so it should be a good shooter. I'm not sure what to think about Trump on most issues. He's saying what I want to hear on guns, immigration, Iran and abortion, to a lesser extent. I know there's a lot he hasn't said, but I know most of the other candidates will bow to the establishment, which is not what I want, so I may as well vote for a true maverick...he can't be any worse.
Actually, though, he does seem to "get" a lot of what the base wants, and I don't see him lying just to get votes, and then shafting us later, so maybe he'd be more responsive to the base when in office? Again, I guess he ultimately couldn't be any worse than what we've got (or the GOPe is offering). Posted by: Grimaldi at September 22, 2015 11:19 PM (+R8HC) 31

Just saw the Cruz/Colbert clip on Reagan. Not horrible, but as far as I'm concerned, he whiffed. He could have mentioned that Democrats didn't deliver on spending cuts in exchanged for tax increases. He could have mentioned the parts of the amnesty bill in '86 that would have made illegal immigration more difficult were never enforced. He could have mentioned that taxes were still much lower at the end of his administration than when he started. He didn't.
These are basic points that a high-profile politician should be able to toss out. I've reached the point where any Republican who can't debate this type of stuff comes across as patronizing to me. You're our standard bearer. You're our leader. You're out there to bring people to your (our) side. If you want my vote, you (a person who actually is a politician by profession) better be able to debate this stuff better than I can. I know she has some moderate/squishy problems of her own, and I'm not sold on her yet--but this is one reason why I like Carly Fiorina. After watching her a few times, I'd expect her to be able to handle something like this. Posted by: AD at September 22, 2015 11:24 PM (S9XdH) 48
Maet, that's not helpful - the quality of that rack-grade M1, I mean! I have succesfully resisted the urge to add a third one to the stable. Both of mine are service-grade HRAs, and I lucked out on both metal condition and stocks (both GI wood in excellent yet charcter-rich used condition). Which manufacturer for the receiver? And is that GI wood? Looks like it in the photo, certainly doesn't look like one of the new CMP ones. And unless I'm wrong about your geography, shouldn't your cost of home delivery (vs. delivery to FFL) include the $100 for the COE, and I guess the $30 for the C ampersand R? One thing I loved back when I got my Mosins and Garands - the "brown truck of happiness" pulling up. One driver got into Mosins based on my enthusiasm - I'd have him come into the garage while I opened up the box to inspect. Truly child-like Christmas morning for a male adult to open those boxes not knowing exactly what you've received. Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2015 11:24 PM (QDnY+) 49

I hereby announce my intent to organize a Moron Meetup, to coincide with the upcoming Worldcon science fiction convention (MidAmericon II) in Kansas City, August 17-21, 2016.
My breathtakingly nebulous plan consists of a desire to organize a Meetup of HQ morons and Hoyt's Huns from Sarah Hoyt's According To Hoyt web site, along with any other freedom-loving SF fan who's more or less aligned with the "Sad Puppy" movement--or at least, a SF-tolerant non-fan who's on the side of truth, justice, and the American Way of Dead White Male Founding Fathers. I have no other details right now other than the general intent to try to organize something, somewhere in the KC metro. Contact me at the electronic mail address which you may assemble from the following: Huns, and Morons. at Gmail. Dot com. (remove extraneous spaces and punctuation, and it's all lower-case). No, I don't know what I'm getting into here. That's part of the fun, isn't it? Any hints or tips from those who've actually organized or attended a Meet-up would be warmly appreciated! I'll repost this or something like it sporadically in the next few days, weeks, months in the run-up to next summer. We'll just have to see what happens. No, these 'neo puritans' are no such thing. They're not fundamentalist christian, they don't believe in God, and they are not preaching a religion.
They are plain and simple, old fashioned tyrant dictators. There is no reason to redefine old words to mean some new thing that isn't new at all. It isn't necessary to confuse the issues by dressing the debate up in new labels and new code words. If we keep on with this redefining the meaning of words we are going to end up with a language that doesn't mean anything, that means different things to different people, just as we are doing to the law now. The law no longer exists because no one agrees what the law is anymore, nor to whom the law applies. It will become impossible to have a conversation about anything made all the worse when facts are fabricated or ignored. Without a common language and law that we all agree with, there is no way to mediate disputes other than by force. Posted by: Hayfield Volkovski at September 22, 2015 11:31 PM (ix3hc) 68
Yeah, CMP will not be selling any modern selective-fire long arms - not sure why anyone ever thought they would. Down to M1 Garands now, some carbines on auction, and maybe some barreled receivers (haven't checked in a while). Plus lots of spare parts, and ammo (mostly commercial). Ricardo, saw an article online about the Canadian scouts. Their venerable Enfields were being turned in and a purpose-built Sako rifle was to replace them. Hayfield your point about language, and about law, is really central. Of course the two points converge into one when one gets to the absurdity of the SCOTUS' rampant (and capricious) legislation lately. It also ties into a hobby horse I try not to ride (or hit with the crop) too much - this refusal/inability of non-fascist, non-racist, non-insane public figures to reject/dismantle the false premises of almost all public discussions and questions. Stringer, you gonna make me go check the "Ask the Director" thread at CMP Forums on that 1911 thing? Really? Is that a confirmed rumor? The CMP crowd relentlessly hounds the good-humored management about more carbines, and 1911s, but I thought it was settled that there would be no more firearms apart from M1s from here on out. I bought 4 surplus 1911 mags from CMP a few months ago ($7/each? irrestible price whatever it was). That release sparked another frenzy of 1911 fever, but I haven't checked since then. 68 No, these 'neo puritans' are no such thing.
=============== I'm up for it if the Puritan part gets lowercased. After all they called themselves that because they wanted to "purify" the English Church of the old-fashioned Roman Catholicism. Similarly the neo-puritans want to purify the world from the "taint" of conservative (i.e., time-tested) thinking. And it's useful to encourage people to recognize their similarities with something they've spent so much vitriol in decrying. Posted by: Sister Sestina at September 22, 2015 11:45 PM (wuOL0) 115

Vendette, meant to ask you: is there some simple answer (hell, any reason) that, yet again, NO appropriations bills were passed? Yes it's scandalous that I haven't bothered to keep up, but my gawd. Again? ANOTHER CR? WTFF? Obviously there is no conceivable excuse for the House not to pass approps bills. But did the Senate Dems simply shut down the process? And as my focus was not on that process side of things, not sure how could they even do so? Apart from objecting to motions to proceed to the bills on the floor - which you'd think would become an instant huge story and confrontation. Even most who are desperately fed up with GOP inefficacy probably don't realize just how importantit is tohave approps bills passed so that veto fights can be set up over specific issues, and avoid the grotesquely orwellian theater of "shut downs". I don't know if I actually believe him 100%, but he's definitely making the right noises on that issue (unlike the rest of the GOP field), and he might not end up betraying conservatives on that issue. Vendette - thanks. And jeebus. One party has - first time I can think of it ever happening - literally shut down the appropriations process, and the other party isn't burning down the house over it, and making them and their prez own it? Though it seems impossible, things are worse than I thought. Don't think I'm exaggerating here. We are now at the point where, due to the failure of the opposition party to oppose, to do any sort of basic political work, there is literally no division of power in govt. The WH can demand any spending on anything it wants, and the Congress will meekly comply, since there will be a "shut-down" if all demands are not met. Of course this unprecedented situation would evaporate the nano-second a GOP president is sworn in (however useless and weakhe/she is), and once again Congress would have the stronger hand in budget matters. Starting to really look like things are far past the point of no return. Posted by: rhomboid at September 23, 2015 12:11 AM (QDnY+) 190

Stop the flow of money from illegals back to Mexico. Hell, the Fed set up some special "channel" to the Mexican central bank to make such transfers easier (this shows the elite want the illegals here, and want their money going to Mexico).
So stop that shit. No more easy transfers. To do it, you've got to be a citizen or legal resident and you go through some hoops to do it. Make it a felony to so transfer money without the proper authorization. Second, another federal pound you in the ass prison sentence felony to hire illegals. Third, no services for illegals. No hospitals have to treat them, etc. This would be the "heartless" one that would be impossible to implement I'm sure. "Funny, there's no mention in that NYT article about Obama and his supposedly 'great' economy. 100 million will be a bigger magnet for bringing the homeless to LA
than the bus the kids used in South Park to get the homeless out of their town" San Francisco spends, in rough round numbers, about a half a million dollars PER DAY on its "homeless" problem, and has gotten no traction at all. L.A. is a hell of a lot bigger. A hundred million bucks will be gone in a shot. Of course, a huge amount of this money gets sucked up by various nongovernmental "agencies" and "service bureaus" operating under municipal contract to "assist" the homeless population. These outfits are really just institutional-left sinecures for local Democratic ward-heelers. A ridiculously inefficient and corrupt way to run the show. Border barrier. There is something in the water here, even with otherwise sensible regulars, when it comes to this topic. It's not complicated. Of course barriers work. If any confirmation of common sense is needed, the San Diego sector will suffice. Barrier totally changed the dynamic - and just as illustratively, things got much much worse just to the east, El Centro sector, where the barrier .... ends. DUH. (but there are day-time regulars here who inexplicably cling to illogical and counter-factual views on border barriers - it's bizarre) You don't have to build the entire border the same way. Terrain actually helps make large stretches impassable *to the kind of illegal traffic we are talking about*, which is all that matters for this discussion. A very effective full border barrier would be easy, it would not rank among the most notable public works projects of even recent history. And OF COURSE you also have to do enforcement - which is the larger point, anyway (lawlessness). Barrier + enforcement - even the earliest credible moves towards these - would see some dramatic changes occuring. Again, common sense, backed up by several real-world examples of states/localities changing the "temperature of the water" and the illegals reacting instantly. And no, due to the OTHER, probably even more important, sort of lawlessness ravaging the country - the judicial kind - you cannot simply "switch off" the benefits magnets. Prop 187 was overturned by one judge employing now-typical absurd "reasoning", decades ago. Good luck imposing any sense or fairness on the situation now, when judicial tyranny is essentially unchecked. You'd have to change the entire welfare situation, not just that applying to illegals - mission extremely improbable. Action is still possible to chip away on the edges - federal blackmail to end sanctuary cities and drivers' licenses and in-state tuition, for example - which will be helpful but is more on the restoring rule-of-law side of things. Border barrier + enforcement is the answer, and it would work, and it would work very well, and very easily. Posted by: rhomboid at September 23, 2015 12:26 AM (QDnY+) 223

I'm getting sick of the fine shit. The leaders of the company need to be personally libel and subject to jail time. This happens all the time with these big megacorps. They pay some "record fine", which is really peanuts to them, and keep on going.
One thing I recall is some banks getting caught laundering drug money. They just payed a fine. Ooooops, our bad, sorry, we won't do it again. We didn't mean to do it. Mistakes were made. When you consider the sums of money going to the drug cartels, it can't be all cash only. It's impossible. The banking system has to be involved, and it is. And what do the cartels do with all that money? It gets reinvested, and back here. Hell, they call the Cayman Islands banking paradise the "Axis of Drugs", and they are one of the top holders of US Treasuries. That little dinky place holds a huge chunk of US debt. El Chapo and his friends lend money back to Uncle, you see. And Uncle is really fine with that. I know some people just don't want to hear this kind of shit, but believe me, the corruption at the top goes farther than you can believe. I lived 3 hours from the Mexican border for damn near 30 years and what I would like like to see is 2 Berlin style walls with a moat full of piranhas and those penis infiltrating eels in between. Maet, didn't know that (about the COE renewal cost). My C and R is good for another 18 months. So I can still use the cost of the COE as another excuse NOT to get another M1 ..... Plus, my only C and R interests recently were handguns (unissued P-64s), which of course have to go through a regular FFL anyway, so the COE doesn't play. And Burnt Toast, and the people you were answering, joining the CMP is fairly easy and being a vet is just one way. And firearm delivery details vary by state. The CMP is a congressionally chartered quasi-official operation, and has the authority to ship C and R long arms directly, subject to state restrictions of course. Most people in the US can still get CMP rifles delivered to their door. Posted by: rhomboid at September 23, 2015 12:34 AM (QDnY+) 239

Just looked it up. As of July 2015, the "Caribbean Banking Centers", which is the US Treasury's official name for the Axis of Drugs, is the third largest holder of debt, behind China and Japan, and just above the Axis of Oil. Ralph, the "savings" in terms of benefits and other costs from the instant and material reduction in illegals numbers resulting from any combo of enforcement and border fortification would dwarf any "costs" of those two items. Enforcement will represent very little additional expenditure - we're talking about enforcing existing laws with existing federal personnel and agencies. ANY credible move towards ANY of the things people are talking about here - curtailing benefits, enforcing workplace and other laws, securing the border - would have dramatic effects. People don't seem to realize this. The illegals are rational actors. ALL the signals are currently green for illegal life in the US (shadows? the lines are so blurred that illegals, without exaggeration, now enjoy both de jure and de facto SUPERIOR treatment in many ways compared to normal legal citizens). Any of those signals turns yellow - credibly - and it's a whole different ball game. Which is why amnesty and all its vile euphemisms - including "dream" nonsense - is so stupid and immoral. Local do-nothing, drone, pathetic Dem congresswoman's office sends a rep. The two things she thought worth mentioning to the gathering: if you want some federal $$$$ from an arts/culture grant-making festival coming up, please contact us to get your application in order (!); and .... she described how the congresswoman is working hard to "fight hunger in our community". Face-palm. Hunger. With more welfare programs than can probably be mapped on a chart - and the schools, as torque noted, now becoming f***king supplemental feeding centers, even during the summer, and obesity a major problem in the targeted "communities"- they wanted us to know they were on top of the "hunger" problem. Just tuning around on the radio dial, you can be treated to Ad Council PSAs about how "one in five children in America suffers from hunger" and "what you can do to help". Of course these PSAs say nothing about the exorbitant amount of spending on government food aid already. Nor do they give an actual definition of "hunger". So, yeah, with a populace being bombarded by this sort of Soviet state messaging, little wonder that Congresscritters are rushing to assure their constituents that everything possible is being done to "solve" this problem. Several years ago. Took the now-wife who was visiting to an aquarium - it's affiliated with a very famous oceanographic institute. Great jellyfish display - wild black and bright colored ones I'd never seen or heard of. Other good stuff. Then as we approached the other main exhibition area, my alarms started going off. Up above just inside the hall was a large sign with a nearly hysterical bit of prose about "ocean acidification". Oh boy, here we go. Don't recall spending too much time looking through the exhibit, but did some, of course applying those now-forbidden tools, logic and common sense, which naturally led to questions at odds with the conclusively stated assertions salting the exhibit. And I clearly remember saying to my now-wife something along the lines of "well this must be the back-up, as the climate thing just keeps getting more and more ridiculous and less credible". Posted by: Emmie (formerly Mindy) at September 23, 2015 01:47 AM (eg4Vl) They will say whatever they think they have to say to gain absolute power. They will use any excuse, however flimsy, and push it past the point of being ridiculous. The reaction really needs to be "whatever the problem, if the solution is more government control -- the advocates and proponents of such solutions need to be ridiculed, stripped of power, impoverished, and exiled." Sadly, the mass of entrenched bureaucrats tend to disfavor this option. Posted by: cthulhu at September 23, 2015 01:56 AM (EzgxV) 377
The oceans are basically lined with calcium deposits; so its going to take a lot of acid to unbuffer the sea. Even if it were happening, which we can't actual measure, it would take a millenia to make a difference and I believe marine life has adapted to changes before.

Vendette reported earlier that there is no state dinner for the Pope although the head of China had one, just a big meet and greet on the WH lawn, apparently with church dissidents among them. Emmie, well put (about ocean acidification). And this just underlines how bad things are. At least in the US, Canada, and western Europe, there is now a fully weaponized pseudo-science/social engineering complex, fanatically devoted to controlling all human activity and mostly in control of both academia and govt., with an enthusiastic Ministry of Information in the form of pop culture. Sure - the public's not buying it - but so what? The link between popular consent/desires and govt. action is rather obviously broken at the federal level. Do the brazen, and not very clever, distortions of climate data, and the equally brazen lawlessness of the govt. warriors (like successive EPA administrators), reflect desperation? Or confidence, and the effective end of opposition? It's only one data point, but it's a doozy, that leads me to the pessimistic side. The Senate majority leader is from a coal state. The coal industry and its best customer the power-generation sector, for no good reason, are being essentially destroyed by federal edicts. This situation has no analogue I can think of. It is a literally unbelievable inversion of normal (and proper) Washington power dynamics. I can't come up with an analogy to emphasize the point - the real situation is more dramatic and hard to believe than any hypothetical. (and standard-issue observations about McConnell's fecklessness, GOP weakness etc. don't play here - this is a direct assault on a major economic interest of the majority leader's state). Things like this make me think many underestimate how far down the road we are. Emmie, I admit I'm puzzled. Why would you want such people to join the Horde? By your description they don't have the tools to even benefit from exposure to the HQ. Besides, they sound like the typical sort, long on passion and micron-deep on understanding, unable to discuss any important topic in a substantive way - so I can't imagine they'd have any use for this place. Most of my family - hold, make that just about every single one of them - I wouldn't think of sending here. None of them stupid people, but there are *so* many different kinds of smart and stupid. These people trying to engage on any public policy topic is like watching a chimp trying to figure out how to operate a digital camera. And their ignorance and bigotry are armored with self-assurance and righteousness as thick as the battle-bridge on the USS Iowa class battleships. 363 "they wanted us to know they were on top of the 'hunger' problem"
Posted by: torquewrench at September 23, 2015 01:46 AM (noWW6) OK, this one is personal pet peeve of mine. We have, simultaneously, a hunger epidemic and an obesity epidemic. We have kids who are so fat and lazy that they are developing adult-onset diabetes. Which kids are being fed, and which aren't? My son goes to public school now, at a school in a rather rough area, because we live there. Don't ask--it's Alaska, so neighborhoods are weird. Anyway, they feed all of the kids breakfast and lunch, regardless of ability to pay, off the government dime. So, no hunger. Pretty sure public schools are all recipients of this sort of deal. Who is not being fed? Food stamps, aid to families with dependent children, housing grants, etc., etc. If kids are still hungry, no damned program is gonna fix that. Just means mom and dad are spending it all on booze and drugs, and we can't beat that with another damned program. NOBODY IN THIS COUNTRY IS STARVING. If kids are hungry, take them away from the parents who are not feeding them. Period. Stop. Whoooeee, rant off. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at September 23, 2015 02:46 AM (J+mig) That pretty much describes the entire world view of your average lunatic progressive. When abortion is your sacrament, and using the force of government to control you "enemies" is your modus operandi, and then mixing that with a healthy dose of self-hatred that borders on psychopathy, it becomes clear that nothing that passes their lips even approaches sanity or logic. But some can be snatched from the clutches of the beast. Once in a while you hear of someone who figures it out. It usually takes something very personal that shows them their ideas are nothing more than vapor. Usually when someone is a raving abortion supporter, you need to simply ask how long it has been since their abortion and if they have had anyone to talk to about it. That either sets off the vehement denials and ranting, or it brings on the tears. Once the waterworks start, the crack opens, and sometimes sunlight can find its way in. Helps to pray a bunch, too. 439 O.K. So now everybody knows-because I'm in a state of high fatigue and didn't cover it up. I'm a woman. I think most people suspected that, but iI didn't want to say that because i didn't want to deal with people who might have felt a need to lecture me about how wrong it is for women to be pastors. if that's what people think that's fine but i don't want to have to get into arguments about that or told I'm not a christian or God judges me harshly because of that. Been there. Done that. :^): If you don't want a woman pastor you don't have to attend the church I serve, but yes I'm a conservative woman who believes in the ordination of women in the Protestant tradition, but we don't have to argue about it. :^)

Any quick thoughts on VW's emissions scheme? I'm running about 80% "F*** the EPA", myself.
Posted by: cthulhu at September 23, 2015 03:26 AM (EzgxV) I may have mentioned I kind of hate VWs, so maybe not objective. Might want to see as many fall as possible in this fight. I know a lot of people have modded their ECUs on TDIs to get more power (lots) *and* more mileage, I even considered a TDI Jetta myself (with the computer upgrade and exhaust and intake). The cars do have their good points, aside from terrible electronics and service. Some people think VW has an "out" of sorts in the way the law is written, but that's wishful thinking. The law says what the emperor wants it to say. Despite the Academic Fraud in CA on particulates, diesel smoke is *still* actually worse for your lungs than gas engine smoke. The data isn't as strong as they said, but it's strong enough. Cancer hotspots are abused in the literature, but the correlation between truck shipping routes and train depots and cancer isn't coincidence, and that's been known for a while. But that's also largely uncontrolled diesel smoke. I think it will be a mess. VW could easily survive the fines and even the publicity (they gain a particular rebel edge on this one), not sure if diesels will survive in the US or take one in the tush. Well, they might survive outside of CA, but more states are just following CA on this stuff. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at September 23, 2015 03:36 AM (bLnSU) 489

Well, Fenelon, the advice my priest gave me about dealing with the forces of evil: stay in a state of grace. Not sure how protestants go about that. For a time I was in the confessional daily, and at the altar that often as well. Remember that the devil has no knees.
Not at all sure how a protestant goes about an exorcism, or even determines if one is needed, but I know that any house or apartment I've ever lived in gets blessed long before anything of mine goes in the door. All Catholic Archdioceses have a staff exorcist, although they usually don't advertise that to keep the nut cases at bay. You could contact you local diocese and ask the question, at least. Ours in Madison was not adverse to performing said exorcisms in places not usually considered Catholic, and he did a serious house blessing at a farm near us when we lived there. The family were not Catholic, but the nonsense stopped after he performed the ritual. I know not everyone believes this stuff, but from what I've seen and heard, it never hurts to err on the side of caution. If you expect your church to serve people and not cause them problems, perhaps this is an avenue to investigate? Not sure, again, how protestants view all this, except that I some may consider the whole process somehow idolatrous or something. At any rate, I shall add you and your church to my long list of petitions at my daily rosary. Also Puddleglum, there's a whole debate in film circles about what happens at the very end of Taxi Driver.
A lot of people think (a) the entire final act is Travis' dying fantasy, and/or (b) he's somehow getting killed at the end (he looks in the rear view mirror and then suddenly Scorsese's camera pans to the windshield... and won't look back). Thanks, St Margaret; Ive never actually had a n internetl conversation with a Saint before :^). Very helpful and kind post. I am in a state of grace as far as Protestant understand that. I don't go to conferssion, but I confess every day and ask of ask for forgiveness. I intentionally give my self to Christ every day. so that God might be glorified in my life and Christ lifted up. I pray and read the bible and Christians devotional regularly. I take the Lord's supper sometimes on days it is not offered in our church. We had prayers and anointing of the pews with oil the first day the laypeople and I started there , but I think more is needed. I didnt know RC would come to a church that wasn't RC. They won't think I'm crazy if i ask?
And i know some people would find this funny-that a Sith lord is writing nasty letters about not liking the traditional doctrine of the church. It's probably too late but got a question for everybody.
Does *anyone* know how London got its name? Was reading a Wikipedia that it was supposedly named for a King Lud... but there's literally no evidence such a king ever existed, anywhere. And it didn't help that Geoffrey of Monmouth was apparently batty as all get out. Posted by: qdpsteve at September 23, 2015 04:02 AM (ntObR) 510
I've also read that there are saints in the Catholic church that go back so far (the 10th century and before), there's pretty much no record anywhere of who they actually were or why they were canonized. Today they're basically saints just because they've always been recognized as such by the church.
Posted by: qdpsteve at September 23, 2015 04:04 AM (ntObR) 511
Wel, there are "shadowy" Saints. St Faustina was Polish, died in the 30s and was canonized by JPII so she's not one of the shadowy ones in church history.

And no, tcn. i don't consider exorcisms idolatrous. I once knew a pastor (Protestant) who had a deliverance service or what you would basically call an exorcism at his church but he's long gone now so I wouldn't know who's legit on this in our tradition so I;d have to seek out the Catholics, I suppose.

Well, qdp, the Romans did, just not that tidbit.
Maybe they left it on a scrap of paper at Pompeii. There's actually a lot lost from that time, just less than some parts of the world or parts of history. We actually have a shit-ton of work from the "dark ages," but that narrative is pretty strong, so most people think of it as a time of lost scholarship or backwardness. It was just a transition from Roman dominance to European dominance. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at September 23, 2015 04:22 AM (bLnSU) 524

Remember all the Fukishima hysteria? I was just reading a piece about that. About 1600 people died. Not from radiation, but from the panicked evacuation from fear of radiation. If they would have stayed put, nothing much would've happened. The average exposure would've been no more than twice normal background. If you lived near one of the localized hotspots, your exposure would've been that of 4 CT scans in a year.
So one of the biggest nuclear fuckups and it was nothing burger as far as "RADIATION DISASTER!!!!". Will any of the hysteria mongers be held accountable? Not a chance. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at September 23, 2015 04:25 AM (dvuhZ) 526

TigerDirect had a great deal on a case with some very nice features for $20 after rebate. I was going to buy it even though I'm not sure when my next build will be. But then they wanted almost $24 for shipping. Killed the deal. I was really starting to make plans for a moment there. Samsung just released their first mass market NVMe M.2 SSDs, whose performance is measured in gigaBYTES per second. It's one of the advance that will make Skylake a big deal after a few generations of slow buildup.
