Given his past positions I don't really believe that Trump has suddenly become a second amendment absolutist. On the other hand according to this article his sons Donald and Eric are way into hunting and shooting and seem to have some influence over his views so he's probably not going to screw gun owners over either.

So This Arrived At My Doorstep Last Thursday
After a lot of dithering I finally got off my butt and ordered an M1 rifle from the CMP. I got all my paperwork together and mailed it off on a Wednesday and seven days later FedEx delivered this little beaut to my door. Total cost: $630 which included shipping and a nice hard plastic case.
I ordered a rack grade M1 which is the lowest grade they offer but I'm totally pleased with what I got. The parkerized finish is almost 100% and the wood is in good condition with barely visible cartouches. This particular rifle was born at Springfield Armory in April 1945 but like most M1s has been refurbished at least once over its lifetime so many of its parts are a mix of WWII-era replacements and the barrel is from 1951. According to the tag its throat erosion is 3 and muzzle wear is 2 which are well within spec so it should be a good shooter.

These are basic points that a high-profile politician should be able to toss out. I've reached the point where any Republican who can't debate this type of stuff comes across as patronizing to me. You're our standard bearer. You're our leader. You're out there to bring people to your (our) side.
If you want my vote, you (a person who actually is a politician by profession) better be able to debate this stuff better than I can.
I know she has some moderate/squishy problems of her own, and I'm not sold on her yet--but this is one reason why I like Carly Fiorina. After watching her a few times, I'd expect her to be able to handle something like this.

Maet, that's not helpful - the quality of that rack-grade M1, I mean! I have succesfully resisted the urge to add a third one to the stable. Both of mine are service-grade HRAs, and I lucked out on both metal condition and stocks (both GI wood in excellent yet charcter-rich used condition).
Which manufacturer for the receiver? And is that GI wood? Looks like it in the photo, certainly doesn't look like one of the new CMP ones.
And unless I'm wrong about your geography, shouldn't your cost of home delivery (vs. delivery to FFL) include the $100 for the COE, and I guess the $30 for the C ampersand R?
One thing I loved back when I got my Mosins and Garands - the "brown truck of happiness" pulling up. One driver got into Mosins based on my enthusiasm - I'd have him come into the garage while I opened up the box to inspect. Truly child-like Christmas morning for a male adult to open those boxes not knowing exactly what you've received.

Yeah, CMP will not be selling any modern selective-fire long arms - not sure why anyone ever thought they would. Down to M1 Garands now, some carbines on auction, and maybe some barreled receivers (haven't checked in a while). Plus lots of spare parts, and ammo (mostly commercial).
Ricardo, saw an article online about the Canadian scouts. Their venerable Enfields were being turned in and a purpose-built Sako rifle was to replace them. I think the Sakos will also be available in a civilian version to the commercial market.

Of course the two points converge into one when one gets to the absurdity of the SCOTUS' rampant (and capricious) legislation lately. It also ties into a hobby horse I try not to ride (or hit with the crop) too much - this refusal/inability of non-fascist, non-racist, non-insane public figures to reject/dismantle the false premises of almost all public discussions and questions.

The CMP crowd relentlessly hounds the good-humored management about more carbines, and 1911s, but I thought it was settled that there would be no more firearms apart from M1s from here on out.
I bought 4 surplus 1911 mags from CMP a few months ago ($7/each? irrestible price whatever it was). That release sparked another frenzy of 1911 fever, but I haven't checked since then.

Was just yesterday wandering through the CMP site, rack grade M1's are $630, service grade is another hundred, and the price escalates from there.
My Garand is service grade, as is the M14, the 1911 is just old.
Only thing better is the 2 Navy Colts, one with provenance and the other falls in the destroyed serial # range.

Though it seems impossible, things are worse than I thought.
Don't think I'm exaggerating here. We are now at the point where, due to the failure of the opposition party to oppose, to do any sort of basic political work, there is literally no division of power in govt. The WH can demand any spending on anything it wants, and the Congress will meekly comply, since there will be a "shut-down" if all demands are not met.
Of course this unprecedented situation would evaporate the nano-second a GOP president is sworn in (however useless and weakhe/she is), and once again Congress would have the stronger hand in budget matters.
Starting to really look like things are far past the point of no return.

rokshox, in CA at least, the direct delivery of C ampersand R rifles is still possible, but in addition to the federal FFL-03 license you need a state-issued shake-down, er, "licence" called a COE, which costs $100+ and is only good for a year. So many C and R holders are not renewing, as most of the value is now gone.

I'd start by limiting it to one kid, for 16 years going forward. No exceptions. And they'd have to choose between food stamps or free meals at school, because I have never understood why in the fuck they need both if little Johnny is getting all three meals at school, plus food sent home for the weekend, which is what they were doing in Cali when we left.
I'd also cut wayyyyyyyy back on Section 8, because let me tell ya, that is a good gig for landlords if they work it right.

No, I really don't think anyone would do it.
I'd start by limiting it to one kid, for 16 years going forward. No exceptions. And they'd have to choose between food stamps or free meals at school, because I have never understood why in the fuck they need both if little Johnny is getting all three meals at school, plus food sent home for the weekend, which is what they were doing in Cali when we left.
I'd also cut wayyyyyyyy back on Section 8, because let me tell ya, that is a good gig for landlords if they work it right.

If any confirmation of common sense is needed, the San Diego sector will suffice. You don't have to build the entire border the same way. And OF COURSE you also have to do enforcement - which is the larger point, anyway (lawlessness). Barrier + enforcement - even the earliest credible moves towards these - would see some dramatic changes occuring. Again, common sense, backed up by several real-world examples of states/localities changing the "temperature of the water" and the illegals reacting instantly.
And no, due to the OTHER, probably even more important, sort of lawlessness ravaging the country - the judicial kind - you cannot simply "switch off" the benefits magnets. Prop 187 was overturned by one judge employing now-typical absurd "reasoning", decades ago. Good luck imposing any sense or fairness on the situation now, when judicial tyranny is essentially unchecked. You'd have to change the entire welfare situation, not just that applying to illegals - mission extremely improbable.
Action is still possible to chip away on the edges - federal blackmail to end sanctuary cities and drivers' licenses and in-state tuition, for example - which will be helpful but is more on the restoring rule-of-law side of things. Border barrier + enforcement is the answer, and it would work, and it would work very well, and very easily.

And I thought I'd seen it all. Never had come across the weekend school meals setup, though.
What I have seen are the schools opening up their cafeterias to serve meals to their student population _when school is out for vacation_, because apparently despite record high food stamp enrollment, the children aren't getting fed at home, and gee, wouldn't that be indicative of either massive fraud in the program, or massive parental neglect?

Maet, didn't know that (about the COE renewal cost). My C and R is good for another 18 months. So I can still use the cost of the COE as another excuse NOT to get another M1 .....
Plus, my only C and R interests recently were handguns (unissued P-64s), which of course have to go through a regular FFL anyway, so the COE doesn't play.
And Burnt Toast, and the people you were answering, joining the CMP is fairly easy and being a vet is just one way. And firearm delivery details vary by state. The CMP is a congressionally chartered quasi-official operation, and has the authority to ship C and R long arms directly, subject to state restrictions of course. Most people in the US can still get CMP rifles delivered to their door.

Local do-nothing, drone, pathetic Dem congresswoman's office sends a rep. The two things she thought worth mentioning to the gathering: if you want some federal $$$$ from an arts/culture grant-making festival coming up, please contact us to get your application in order (!); and .... she described how the congresswoman is working hard to "fight hunger in our community".
Face-palm. Hunger. With more welfare programs than can probably be mapped on a chart - and the schools, as torque noted, now becoming f***king supplemental feeding centers, even during the summer, and obesity a major problem in the targeted "communities"- they wanted us to know they were on top of the "hunger" problem.
Sorry for the doom/gloom. But gawd. And of course, the idiot drones who are my neighbors thought nothing of it, this surreal little presentation just passed unremarked upon.

For a touch of good news here in Casa de Cthulhu, I went in for a new CPAP mask fitting -- the flavor I'd been using the last 6 years is about to be discontinued, so I'm "getting with the program". In addition, the heatwave we've been having since the weekend has broken and it should be relatively nice outside tomorrow.......which is a seriously good thing because the outdoors is totally overgrown and needs pruning.

Just tuning around on the radio dial, you can be treated to Ad Council PSAs about how "one in five children in America suffers from hunger" and "what you can do to help".
Of course these PSAs say nothing about the exorbitant amount of spending on government food aid already. Nor do they give an actual definition of "hunger".
So, yeah, with a populace being bombarded by this sort of Soviet state messaging, little wonder that Congresscritters are rushing to assure their constituents that everything possible is being done to "solve" this problem.

Several years ago. Took the now-wife who was visiting to an aquarium - it's affiliated with a very famous oceanographic institute. Great jellyfish display - wild black and bright colored ones I'd never seen or heard of. Other good stuff.
Then as we approached the other main exhibition area, my alarms started going off. Up above just inside the hall was a large sign with a nearly hysterical bit of prose about "ocean acidification". Oh boy, here we go. Don't recall spending too much time looking through the exhibit, but did some, of course applying those now-forbidden tools, logic and common sense, which naturally led to questions at odds with the conclusively stated assertions salting the exhibit.
And I clearly remember saying to my now-wife something along the lines of "well this must be the back-up, as the climate thing just keeps getting more and more ridiculous and less credible".

At least in the US, Canada, and western Europe, there is now a fully weaponized pseudo-science/social engineering complex, fanatically devoted to controlling all human activity and mostly in control of both academia and govt., with an enthusiastic Ministry of Information in the form of pop culture. Sure - the public's not buying it - but so what? The link between popular consent/desires and govt. action is rather obviously broken at the federal level.
Do the brazen, and not very clever, distortions of climate data, and the equally brazen lawlessness of the govt. warriors (like successive EPA administrators), reflect desperation? Or confidence, and the effective end of opposition?
It's only one data point, but it's a doozy, that leads me to the pessimistic side. The Senate majority leader is from a coal state. The coal industry and its best customer the power-generation sector, for no good reason, are being essentially destroyed by federal edicts.
This situation has no analogue I can think of. It is a literally unbelievable inversion of normal (and proper) Washington power dynamics. I can't come up with an analogy to emphasize the point - the real situation is more dramatic and hard to believe than any hypothetical. (and standard-issue observations about McConnell's fecklessness, GOP weakness etc. don't play here - this is a direct assault on a major economic interest of the majority leader's state). Things like this make me think many underestimate how far down the road we are.

Why would you want such people to join the Horde? By your description they don't have the tools to even benefit from exposure to the HQ.

Of course these PSAs say nothing about the exorbitant amount of spending on government food aid already. Nor do they give an actual definition of "hunger".
So, yeah, with a populace being bombarded by this sort of Soviet state messaging, little wonder that Congresscritters are rushing to assure their constituents that everything possible is being done to "solve" this problem.

OK, this one is personal pet peeve of mine. We have, simultaneously, a hunger epidemic and an obesity epidemic. We have kids who are so fat and lazy that they are developing adult-onset diabetes. Which kids are being fed, and which aren't?
My son goes to public school now, at a school in a rather rough area, because we live there. Don't ask--it's Alaska, so neighborhoods are weird. Anyway, they feed all of the kids breakfast and lunch, regardless of ability to pay, off the government dime. So, no hunger. Pretty sure public schools are all recipients of this sort of deal.
Who is not being fed?
Food stamps, aid to families with dependent children, housing grants, etc., etc. If kids are still hungry, no damned program is gonna fix that. Just means mom and dad are spending it all on booze and drugs, and we can't beat that with another damned program.
NOBODY IN THIS COUNTRY IS STARVING.
If kids are hungry, take them away from the parents who are not feeding them. Period. Stop.

I joke about it needing an exorcism but I think it really does, and in the midst of them are some of the loveliest kindest christian people you;d ver met.

Might want to see as many fall as possible in this fight.
I know a lot of people have modded their ECUs on TDIs to get more power (lots) *and* more mileage, I even considered a TDI Jetta myself (with the computer upgrade and exhaust and intake). The cars do have their good points, aside from terrible electronics and service.
Some people think VW has an "out" of sorts in the way the law is written, but that's wishful thinking. The law says what the emperor wants it to say.
Despite the Academic Fraud in CA on particulates, diesel smoke is *still* actually worse for your lungs than gas engine smoke. The data isn't as strong as they said, but it's strong enough. Cancer hotspots are abused in the literature, but the correlation between truck shipping routes and train depots and cancer isn't coincidence, and that's been known for a while. But that's also largely uncontrolled diesel smoke.
I think it will be a mess. VW could easily survive the fines and even the publicity (they gain a particular rebel edge on this one), not sure if diesels will survive in the US or take one in the tush. Well, they might survive outside of CA, but more states are just following CA on this stuff.

I had the wierdest experience lately. Caffeinated sugary soda helps me sleep. Totally the opposite of what it did a few years ago. I almost never drink it but I had some out at a friend's to keep me awake and that was the best night's sleep I'd had in weeks.
It's the drugs in my case.
But sometimes eating or not eating or something herbal or something can help.

Not at all sure how a protestant goes about an exorcism, or even determines if one is needed, but I know that any house or apartment I've ever lived in gets blessed long before anything of mine goes in the door. All Catholic Archdioceses have a staff exorcist, although they usually don't advertise that to keep the nut cases at bay. You could contact you local diocese and ask the question, at least. Ours in Madison was not adverse to performing said exorcisms in places not usually considered Catholic, and he did a serious house blessing at a farm near us when we lived there. The family were not Catholic, but the nonsense stopped after he performed the ritual.
I know not everyone believes this stuff, but from what I've seen and heard, it never hurts to err on the side of caution. If you expect your church to serve people and not cause them problems, perhaps this is an avenue to investigate?
Not sure, again, how protestants view all this, except that I some may consider the whole process somehow idolatrous or something.
At any rate, I shall add you and your church to my long list of petitions at my daily rosary.

But I just took some chamomile tea. that may help.Usually prayer and meditation helps but even then I go to sleep and wake up two hours later. It's the pits. You can understand. Thx for listening.
