On Celebrities, CEO, Politicians, and Charisma
From a commenter at Tyler Cowan's Marginal Revolution. I added paragraph breaks to make it easier to read.
Some thoughts from a pseudonymous political consultant:1) The filter for politicians hardly selects for spontaneous television charisma at all until the very highest levels. Typically the types of offices one holds prior to being a Governor or a Senator (Congress, lesser statewide office, Mayor of a medium-sized but not too big city) are offices that select for skill-sets like working a room of a handful of insiders, and avoiding making mistakes; not spontaneously debating on camera. Let's say at any given point in time there are 1,000 people in the country in one of these "feeder" offices (Congress, Statewide elected officials, mid-city mayors, etc).
2) Governor and Senator positions select a little bit more for charisma and media presence, but not much, and usually they only do so in big expensive contested Senate Races - not in the safe blue or safe red states that most Senators and Governors represent. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that no more than 50 out of 150 Governors and Senators were elected in the sorts of elections that test a person's debating mettle and television presence. This doesn't seem like a process where one is going to end up with tremendously charismatic TV personalities running for president. But it does pose an interesting puzzle, because it would seem to me that professional entertainers could wipe the floor with politicians.
3) Very rarely do celebrities or CEOs run for offices that are "to scale," or things that they could easily win. If Carly Fiorina had run for an open Republican seat in Congress instead of Senate on her first shot, she'd be a shoo-in. Ben Affleck would be iffy for Senate, but he'd coast to a victory in Congress (and then Congressman Ben Affleck could easily rise up the ranks and build a political career from there, if he had the patience). When they do run for things that are "to scale" - like Kevin Johnson running for Mayor of Sacramento - they tend to win. When they do things not to scale - Chris Dudley running for Governor of Oregon - they tend to lose.
4) Being an entertainer/CEO is generally a better life than being a politician. This selects for second tier CEOs and entertainers running for office, not first tier ones. Al Franken was an entertaining guy, but he was hardly a first-tier celebrity prior to running for office. For him, running for Senate was a step up in status. For somebody like John Stewart or Stephen Colbert, not so much. Similarly, Bill Gates and Tim Cook have nothing to gain by running for office, so the businessperson candidates we get are generally not first-tier. No offense to Carly Fiorina, she has "succeeded" more than the vast majority of people ever will in her field, but she has dedicated her life singularly to making money, and there's thousands of people who have done a better job than her. She's the businessperson equivalent of a State Attorney General, not a Governor or a Senator. Trump fares a little better, but still, there are dozens of more successful businessmen in the U.S. than him. If you were to rank all the politicians in the U.S. in terms of electoral success, all the legitimate presidential contenders would be in the top 150. Would anybody make the case that Carly Fiorina is one of the top 150 businesspeople in the U.S.?
5) This leads to the interesting observation that CEOs and entertainers may be so much more talented at some aspects of charisma than politicians are that a C-list CEO or entertainer might still be more compelling than an A-list politician. And if an A-list entertainer or CEO ever decides to run for major office (like Arnold running for Governor), they'll have a real shot at winning.
Well personality and charisma do go a long way.

This isn't a case of any sort of trick carburetor or jury rigged catalytic converter. The vehicle's onboard computer could sense when it was hooked up to a diagnostics machine for an emissions test and would conveniently turn on all of its emission control features. (It's being referred to as a "defeat device.") Then, when the test was completed and it was unhooked from the computer it would simply shut them off again, boosting performance but also increasing emissions. You almost have to admire the sheer audacity assuming this is true. And given the initial responses from the company they don't seem to be claiming that they didn't do it.

While Heat has existed in my mind as this high-octane, balls-to-the-wall shoot-em-up, it may exist differently in reality than it does in memory, especially watching it start to finish on 35 mm film in a big auditorium. The reality of Heat is that it's a 170-minute movie with only about four big action pieces. It's at least as much a meditative character study as it is an action film. The action scenes have a way of drowning out the rest in retrospect because they brought an intensity and realism that I don't think we'd ever seen up until that point. De Niro and Pacino running through downtown LA shooting assault rifles in the middle of the day is an image that's hard to forget. Heat's gun sound effects are powerful, and probably more important to the realism of the film as a whole than we give them credit for. Heat's sound design has a Pixies-esque loud/soft dynamic the entire way through. It mirrors Pacino's acting.As Mann explained it, the shootout scene was shot using the natural sound of the gunfire recorded on set. And with no visual effects. Even the beginning sequence, with the armored car, was done for real, weighting the car to make sure it'd flip over.
"Choreography has to tell a story," Mann told the audience, in his flat-voweled, arrr-heavy Chicago accent. "Otherwise it's just gratuitous actions."

So funny story. We were in Round Rock (a northern suburb of Austin) last weekend at the outlets and decided to go to the Kerby Lane Cafe up there. KLC is an Austin place that's expanding. In Austin, it is waited on exclusively by hipsters.
Round rock is different though. For one, they have an outlet mall. People wear fanny packs in Round Rock.
Well, not at Kerby Lane. They clearly import their weird directly from Austin. I felt bad for our server. It was clearly his first day and he was a nerdy Mexican kid. He looked normal, except for ridiculous socks. We believe he was forced to wear the stupid socks. Assimilate. Assimilate.

A bullshit comment on so many levels.
First, and foremost, is the assumption that charisma is desirable/necessary in a politician, which begs the question. We are - or should be - looking for an effective CEO, i.e., an effective decision maker, not a fucking guru or prom king. Depak Chopra need not apply.
Second, no matter who you are, or what you've done, there's always somebody who's done more. It's a corollary to saying that no matter how smart you are, or how dumb you are, there's always somebody, somewhere, who's smarter or dumber than you.
Consider Nobel Laureates in the sciences (the real sciences, not the bullshit "sciences"). There's not a one - not one - who's a patch on Isaac Newton. Not even within hailing distance. Heisenberg, Borh, Schroedinger made huge contributions, but ... still, not a patch on Newton. And Watson and Crick are baby shit by comparison with Heisenberg, Bohr, and Schroedinger. (For that matter, so is Einstein, despite the PR. Quantum mechanics >> relativity.) But that doesn't mean they didn't make massive contributions.
So a simplistic rank-ordering of human achievement does violence to any rational perspective on human affairs. If you want to restrict consideration only to the very best, we're talking about a group that is just big enough to play half-court basketball. And they're all white males. Chew on that, SJWs.

I stopped in one because of having been caught in insane freeway congestion and being late for a very needed dinner. I can go a long time between meals in a pinch, but I had already done that.
The setup required me to order via a tableside touch screen that hadn't been cleaned after the previous patrons. Someone else's greasy fingerprints all over it. Bon appetit!
I need to stow more MREs in the car trunk. They don't taste great, but also won't give me dysentery. The problem is that the hot climate here will ruin even an MRE in fairly short order.
The services came up with "cold weather" MREs with extra calories to sustain troops on snowy deployments. How about hot weather versions that last longer in 150F stowage?

As a scientist, I don't get the shitheads getting the vapors over GMO foods. All foods are digested into their basic parts - amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids - and then reassembled. Throwing a wobbly over where those constituents came from strikes me as being as irrational as getting pissy because the used bricks so beloved of hipsters came from a whorehouse instead of a church. And a LOT of unburied dead thanks to the National Health not working any better than anything else was working.
Due to not remembering any of this, the Brits are due to eventually recapitulate all of it.

Had been involved w/ others that owned siblings of our 8 month old chocolate lab. Turns out one nearby was sick and they couldn't figure it out w/ the vet.
Unfortunately she died today at 8 months. Feel really bad for her owners.

Yep. It was a "Chinese Fire Drill" in Vancouver where I grew up, too. I had an Econoline van with cargo doors on both sides. You could do awesome Chinese fire drills with that, because you could pass through it at a run.
Another classic car stunt: stall the car in the middle of traffic. Cursing a blue streak, get out and open the hood. Continue cursing, and start throwing parts out on the road, generator, carburetor, distributor cap and wires, fuel pump, whatever. Guy behind you gets visions of being stuck there until the tow truck comes. Then you slam the hood shut, curse some more, and drive off.

The thing about Serbia being a main route for this mass Muslim migration (it is migration, not a "refugee" problem to any great degree) cracked me up. Because I've got a fully intact dark sense of humor (if little else, any more).

Which in turn has nothing to do with the mass non-refugee migration (noted above) into Europe. Even the few actual Syrians in the migrant wave are sketchy as refugees - under refugee laws and normal practices,you don't get any special status to just move anywhere you'd like if you are already safely out of harm's way (as nearly all the Syrians involved already were, for years in most cases).
But there's little fact or sense involved in most people's understanding of the world any more. And that's not confined to "left wing" types.

I remember vehicular "Chinese fire drills".
The modern Mexican version in NorCal involves taking a small house with a safe max overnight occupancy of 5 to 8 people, and packing 60+ people into it, where they do things like try to run charcoal grills indoors.
This often ends badly. Especially the tiny, painted-shut windows part.
Some Anglos don't get this either. I stayed at a friend's place, and she was baffled by why I was trying to get the ancient sash window in her guest room to open larger than a hand's-breadth. Why, what other function would a window possibly have other than viewing, and admitting a tiny amount of fresh air?

The Brits did a 24 Hr ration for the far east. Though I understand the corned beef is liquid at those temperatures.
I keep a bag with cans of vienna sausages, mini-cans of spam, life-boat crackers and not very tasty candy in the car. Sometimes I can throw some of those single serving fruit cocktail and instant coffee and lemon powder packets. Most of it is canned at between 212 and 240F so it will age quickly but it won't be spoiled by being in your car in July
(I used to have a GF that would get grumpy and mean when she got hungry.
She also got much more relaxed driving logging roads when she realized I kept 2 days of food and coffee making kit in the car.)

I have no problem with the touchscreen ordering devices. Most waiters/waitresses want to "impress" you by not writing down your order so you end up with nothing close to what you ordered.
At least I know that my order going into the kitchen will be right. Coming out......

New Orleans passed a no smoking law for the entire city, including their one and only casino, Harrahs. The law went into effect July 1; for the month of July, business was down 26% over last year. August was projected to be down another 15%. Atlantic City tried this too, they reversed course in just a few months as their casino gravy train was coming to a sudden and abrupt stop. That was a few years ago though.

The ISIS development seems responsible for much of the massive exodus of "refugees" and migrants. That seems to no small degree to Obama's pentagon gang rewriting intel to show "al Qaeda is on the run" and that ISIS is the JV team.
In that sense, I still think Hillary/Obama deserve a lot of the credit for the European invasion. Not for the general unrest of the region, but for not containing it, and maintaining some stronger alliances. Of course ending our hegemony in the region (and the world) was an Obama goal from day one, it seems.

I'm wondering about the actual causes (well, timing more than anything) of the current migration wave (again, mostly not refugees). Not obvious, and I have not seen any good explanations. As the commentary Maet cites above notes, this is a migration from a broad area. The actual refugee flows due to Syria mostly occurred several years ago, and stopped in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey (mostly).
Unlike others, I have no confidence that this will be the straw breaking any camel backs in Europe. Sure, many of the more sane smaller countries (central Europe, Denmark) are furious - but they're trapped. Russia to their east, a dysfunctional EU/Pax Germanica to their west. America - far away in any case, but essentially gone/poof/disappeared as a force for good.

Hope I'm wrong - hmm, this may sound weird - but I don't see any dramatic or kinetic goings-on in Europe due to this mass migration (or the breath-taking display of top-down near-autocratic rule by the EU and Germany in trying to force its acceptance).
We've seen the re-appearance of borders and the quick reform of refugee benefits and asylum policies in a few smaller places. But overall? I don't think Europeans have it in them to do much about it (that's a broad brush, obviously, but net-net I think Brussels and Berlin get their way here).

I think you're right about that. I absolutely hated high school, and I only did my work to the best of my ability to make sure I wouldn't have to do it again. It felt like a gulag, full of people I'd never want to be around, who were all either in the same boat or part of the system, and the propagantastic teachers didn't help. Not having many/any friends can be a blessing and a curse. It's better to be alone than it is to have horrible people dragging you down, but that's a cold comfort. Loneliness and alienation always eats at you.

Yeah Jarvis, that Walker statement is a real doozy. Not only does one of the few solid names in the race never get out of the starting blocks, but as he stumbles he calls (in effect) for the others to make sure that the party stop anyone outside the mushy middle. Pathetic, really.
Kind of fascinating, of all people Kasich has (maybe even twice?) publicly said that Trump is a result of GOP failures, and that people ought to consider why he is riding high. This remains the only acknowledgement I'm aware of that there is good cause for intense dissatisfaction among GOP voters.
Walker's farewell statement sort of confirms that he, like most (all??) of the GOP hopefuls, are simply not adequate for this moment in US history.

Initially I would have all the NCOs be Germans as well.
One variation from modern day Germany where almost everybody is an atheist (Look at their ID card. It says right there.) is that I would require all aspiring Germans to be baptized as Lutherans or Catholics and require them to attend church services while they are in the military. This is to make them apostates in the Muslim world and make them less willing to surrender, run away or desert. I would also require that they all get at least one prominent Christian religious tattoo. An image of the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe covering their entire back like some Mexicans have would not be required but a tasteful Sacred Heart of Jesus tattoo or a staid Lutheran cross would be acceptable. At least one Christian tattoo should be visible when wearing a short sleeved shirt.
In any event, there ought to be plenty of areas in Syria where the Franchise Germany idea would be very popular and once it catches on, I can see enormous growth potential.

Furthermore, bad teachers are still protected for life by the unions. Except now, they are kept out of the classroom, and instead are assigned do-nothing back-offce jobs AT FULL PAY FOR LIFE because union rules forbid firing any teacher no matter how bad.
The salaries of these ghost-teachers just on their own sucks up all of Zuckerberg's cash and much more besides.
I'd say "ain't that a shame," but frankly I just don't give a shit any more. Zuckerberg and Winfrey will in reality not learn jack doodle from this fiasco -- they'll just repeat the same feel-good gesture so as to earn their progressive brownie badges.
The problem is not money, the problem is the "social justice curriculum" and all the bullshit they teach kids instead of hard cold facts and knowledge.
Unions and Gramscian brainwashers have destroyed public education, and they can just choke on their cash and continue to fail forever as far as I care any more.

Once in a while they slip up and do actual reporting.
Or maybe they've got another agenda. I've been working on a theory that they might be trying to throw this election to JEB, just so that when the economy collapses when all the Fed tricks run out, they can blame it on him. There's still a lot of things that don't jive with it though, so it's just a partly constructed idea that isn't really ready to be launched yet.

Yeah I am going to concentrate more on weapons in the coming year. Not only do I belong to a range where I live, but we found a range on Base where we can shoot also and my Buddy and I are arriving a whole day early just to partake of the opportunity.

Sunday I talked to a guy who is looking into starting a new gunshop here in Asheville, and he said that the number of guns sold each month has been increasing for years.
Seems to be a good time to by buying older bolt-actions - I've seen a bunch for sale at the local flea market. There is also a guy selling small AR parts and tactical accessories that shows up fairly regularly. Haven't seen a whole AR for sale yet.
