The migrants are largely young men from rough, tough parts of the Muslim world. There is now a queue of them that stretches all the way east to Bangladesh and beyond, and deep down into sub-Saharan Africa. People have sold cattle, abandoned houses, robbed employers, left wives and children, and burned all sorts of bridges to come. There are now hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of them. Many are war-hardened. They are looking for money, food, and female companionship, and they are convinced that Europeans are gullible sissies. A final note, Lewis can't help himself with a little political Tourette syndrome that otherwise sullies some solid pondering in his article; And there is surely more we can do to shelter the millions of refugees now fleeing the conflict. Having helped create this mess with the invasion of Iraq and subsequent failure to stop the bloodshed in Syria, the United States and its European allies have an obligation to assist these people. Satellite Imagery Shows Russian Military Buildup in Syria Gay Marriage > Kids With Cancer Or how the US Park Service and the Secret Service stopped a pre-scheduled candlelight march for children with cancer in Lafayette Park. The candlelight vigil came about partly because of the group's inability to persuade the White House to light up the mansion in gold as a symbol of support for the cause, as it has done for other causes, organizers said. So they decided to hold a candlelight vigil of their own. Last year was the first. This isn't a case of any sort of trick carburetor or jury rigged catalytic converter. The vehicle's onboard computer could sense when it was hooked up to a diagnostics machine for an emissions test and would conveniently turn on all of its emission control features. (It's being referred to as a "defeat device.") Then, when the test was completed and it was unhooked from the computer it would simply shut them off again, boosting performance but also increasing emissions. While Heat has existed in my mind as this high-octane, balls-to-the-wall shoot-em-up, it may exist differently in reality than it does in memory, especially watching it start to finish on 35 mm film in a big auditorium. The reality of Heat is that it's a 170-minute movie with only about four big action pieces. It's at least as much a meditative character study as it is an action film. The action scenes have a way of drowning out the rest in retrospect because they brought an intensity and realism that I don't think we'd ever seen up until that point. De Niro and Pacino running through downtown LA shooting assault rifles in the middle of the day is an image that's hard to forget. Heat's gun sound effects are powerful, and probably more important to the realism of the film as a whole than we give them credit for. Heat's sound design has a Pixies-esque loud/soft dynamic the entire way through. It mirrors Pacino's acting. Interestingly most of the main characters in Heat were based on real-life people. It would be interesting to know what Brad Dayspring did for Walkers campaign. Perhaps he was responsible for the foolish fundraiser attack on Trump. If Dayspring was a GOPe operative who intended to sabotage Walker to clear the path for Jeb! he did his job well. It only took him two months to ruin Walker. Who will The Destroyer work for next?

It seems I read somewhere that little Ahmed had commented that students at school had previously called him terrorist and bomb-maker. You know, becuz muzzie. And if you doubt that a 14 year old could form intent, recall the 11 and 13 year old boys sitting outside of school in AR taking potshots at students with a stack of rifles, killing 5. Is Los Angeles Hell-bent on Becoming the World's Biggest Urban Hell-hole?
Los Angeles is a very horizontal city which spreads out rather than builds up. For decades it was illegal to build a building taller than the L.A. city call. It is, and remains, a car culture where you need a car to get around, at least get around safely and when you want. So funny story. We were in Round Rock (a northern suburb of Austin) last weekend at the outlets and decided to go to the Kerby Lane Cafe up there. KLC is an Austin place that's expanding. In Austin, it is waited on exclusively by hipsters. Round rock is different though. For one, they have an outlet mall. People wear fanny packs in Round Rock. Well, not at Kerby Lane. They clearly import their weird directly from Austin. I felt bad for our server. It was clearly his first day and he was a nerdy Mexican kid. He looked normal, except for ridiculous socks. We believe he was forced to wear the stupid socks. Assimilate. Assimilate. Posted by: Missing Persons at September 21, 2015 11:12 PM (LzzEz) 40

On Celebrities, CEO, Politicians, and Charisma
A bullshit comment on so many levels. First, and foremost, is the assumption that charisma is desirable/necessary in a politician, which begs the question. We are - or should be - looking for an effective CEO, i.e., an effective decision maker, not a fucking guru or prom king. Depak Chopra need not apply. Second, no matter who you are, or what you've done, there's always somebody who's done more. It's a corollary to saying that no matter how smart you are, or how dumb you are, there's always somebody, somewhere, who's smarter or dumber than you. Consider Nobel Laureates in the sciences (the real sciences, not the bullshit "sciences"). There's not a one - not one - who's a patch on Isaac Newton. Not even within hailing distance. Heisenberg, Borh, Schroedinger made huge contributions, but ... still, not a patch on Newton. And Watson and Crick are baby shit by comparison with Heisenberg, Bohr, and Schroedinger. (For that matter, so is Einstein, despite the PR. Quantum mechanics >> relativity.) But that doesn't mean they didn't make massive contributions. So a simplistic rank-ordering of human achievement does violence to any rational perspective on human affairs. If you want to restrict consideration only to the very best, we're talking about a group that is just big enough to play half-court basketball. And they're all white males. Chew on that, SJWs. That is when I met Steve Bridges, he was a slightly stocky build he looked pale and gaunt. But he knew basketball in and out, and yes he was all coach. He demanded the boys full attention, and he got it, and if you did not pay attention, you did some push-ups. I got the playbook and reviewed it as much as possible, not just for my son but for me as well.

I stopped in one because of having been caught in insane freeway congestion and being late for a very needed dinner. I can go a long time between meals in a pinch, but I had already done that. The setup required me to order via a tableside touch screen that hadn't been cleaned after the previous patrons. Someone else's greasy fingerprints all over it. Bon appetit! I need to stow more MREs in the car trunk. They don't taste great, but also won't give me dysentery. The problem is that the hot climate here will ruin even an MRE in fairly short order. The services came up with "cold weather" MREs with extra calories to sustain troops on snowy deployments. How about hot weather versions that last longer in 150F stowage? Unfortunately I kinda sorta lied about all that free time that I had. I help run three Breeder Layer Chicken houses, with my father, and while we were slowing down, we would also start doing some extra cleaning work. One nice February morning I found myself with a power washer, washing the inside of an empty chicken barn. We do not wash things but once a year, so they will get quite dusty, muddy, and nasty with everything chicken, and I found myself wearing the wrong clothing, I was warm enough, but I was covered in mud, crap, feathers, S&*t, and anything else that was in a barn.

But they have actual options in flavor sauces to add to your burritos. As well as deals and specials. So if they're in your area and you like Chipotle food they are at least worth checking out.

_Griggs_ also is directly responsible for the post-1970s boom in expensive higher education in America. Can't use workplace IQ testing any longer as a sorting tool? Use university diplomas instead. As a second-order effect, _Griggs_ is also responsible for the post-1970s decline in the quality of college graduates. The bar had to be lowered to accommodate all the people flooding in. I remember when functionally illiterate high school graduates began to be numerous enough to be remarked upon. Today, functionally illiterate university degree holders are the norm. "I quit watching Orphan Black after that tirade about how awful the Thatcher Years were."
Since the primary vector for what passes as "history" in the Anglosphere these days is via the schools and universities, and since the Long March Through The Institutions has turned the schools and universities into leftist indoctrination centers, this crap will persist forever. What you won't ever see on the BBC are realistic depictions of just how incredibly awful the pre-Thatcher years of the 1970s were in the UK. Americans think that Jimmy Carter was bad? As bad as his economic mismanagement was, Carter didn't have to go hat in hand to the IMF to rescue the country. To say nothing of the "Winter Of Discontent", when Britain nearly ceased to exist as a functioning modern society. No fuel on the petrol station forecourts. No food in the stores. No goods in the shops. Electricity rationed to where factories might operate two or three days per week. Public transit paralyzed. The military deputized to provide (sporadic) fire and ambulance services. Huge piles of uncollected trash rotting on the sidewalks of the cities. Mortuaries spilling over with the unburied dead. And a LOT of unburied dead thanks to the National Health not working any better than anything else was working. Due to not remembering any of this, the Brits are due to eventually recapitulate all of it. Posted by: torquewrench at September 21, 2015 11:45 PM (noWW6) 199

A shame what happened to all those buggy-whip workers, way back. On this topic, I've told this one before. Qualcomm tycoon Jacobs cut a radio commercial for a failed local min. wage initiative. In it he says he was a teenage employee of his family's NY restaurant. OK. And ...... so? Oh, right Irwin. You just unwittingly made a point against the idiocy you are promoting. What economists call "informal" labor such as family labor is often a make/break element for survival of low-margin small business (ahemm, restaurants and other hospitality). A min. wage for you back then might have made your family's business untenable, or pushed it that direction. Jeebus. Posted by: rhomboid at September 21, 2015 11:48 PM (QDnY+) 217

I had an epiphany that day, all of my family and my wifes family are and continue to be in good health, now buck up, and shut up and be thankful for what you have.
--------------- In an affluent, complacent society, it is very easy to forget that. We would like this, we would like that. Every night I go to bed and ask myself exactly what it is that I have done to deserve a warm dry bed, a secure home, the food that I have had that day, etc., etc., in short an infinity of blessings. I have no answer. One thing is quite certain, a great deal of 'being happy' has to do with appreciating what we have. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at September 21, 2015 11:55 PM (9mTYi) 243

Cursing a blue streak, get out and open the hood. Continue cursing, and start throwing parts out on the road, generator, carburetor, distributor cap and wires, fuel pump, whatever. The thing about Serbia being a main route for this mass Muslim migration (it is migration, not a "refugee" problem to any great degree) cracked me up. Because I've got a fully intact dark sense of humor (if little else, any more). The thing about the US and Syria is just a typical massive distortion and myth replacing fact. As if rickety, decades-old familydictatorships in the most unstable part of the world don't fall apart from natural causes. Right, the Alawite clans use Syria as a tool of lunatic anti-Israeli Arab nationalism, then rent themselves out to the Persians, and to the Russians, while maintaining (barely) control through brutal violence and $$$$, and eventually even piss off their Gulf subsidy sugar daddies, and after decades this flaming wreck flies off the rails, but it's the US that's responsible for their civil war. Which in turn has nothing to do with the mass non-refugee migration (noted above) into Europe. Even the few actual Syrians in the migrant wave are sketchy as refugees - under refugee laws and normal practices, you don't get any special status to just move anywhere you'd like if you are already safely out of harm's way (as nearly all the Syrians involved already were, for years in most cases). But there's little fact or sense involved in most people's understanding of the world any more. And that's not confined to "left wing" types. I heard something today I had not heard before
There is a business woman from Houston who traveled with a trade delegation from the mayors office (?) to China last spring And the Chinese seized her, accused her of being a spy, and will not release her. They still have her. Did these sorts of things happen so frequently before, and go basically unreported? Or is the world so unafraid of us that they hold us in contempt? "FWIW it was Chinese fire drills here in N Texas too. Never heard of a Mexican version till tonight."
I remember vehicular "Chinese fire drills". The modern Mexican version in NorCal involves taking a small house with a safe max overnight occupancy of 5 to 8 people, and packing 60+ people into it, where they do things like try to run charcoal grills indoors. This often ends badly. Especially the tiny, painted-shut windows part. Some Anglos don't get this either. I stayed at a friend's place, and she was baffled by why I was trying to get the ancient sash window in her guest room to open larger than a hand's-breadth. Why, what other function would a window possibly have other than viewing, and admitting a tiny amount of fresh air? Posted by: torquewrench at September 22, 2015 12:14 AM (noWW6) 291

I read that the term Chinese Fire Drill came from a British navy where they were training a crew of Chinese sailors for fire suppression: One group was supposed to get water up from the side, another was to throw it into the engineering spaces, and the last crew was supposed to bail it out of the engineering spaces and throw it overboard.
What happened was they hauled water up, ran through the engineering spaces and dumped it overboard over the other side. This is a story equal to the story in Gerald Durrell's book, My Family and Other Animals, where he talked about the fire department of Corfu, and their new American style fire engine. ThunderB, 1) dunno, and 2) yes. Recall the extraordinary thing where Chinese business students laughed at our Treasury Secretary (the ridiculous Geithner) during his address there (specifically I believe in response to his assertion the US would regain fiscal balance). A jaw-dropping thing to anyone even slightly familiar with Chinese culture and norms for treating foreign dignitaries. Of course that paled next to Obama's Cairo speech, easily the most insanely stupid and misguided thing ever done by a president on foreign soil. The late Fouad Ajami had a devastating and enlightening critique of it at the time. Funny how to many who fancy themselves worldly and sophisticated - and, absurdly, are treated as such by our degraded civil society - are of course incredibly ignorant. Reverse Darwinism (triumph of the least able and worthy) is now in full-bore testing mode in the US .... how long can it last? Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2015 12:19 AM (QDnY+) 301

Good salesmen, not the stereotypical used car guy or the Alec Baldwin Glengary Glenross character (although that level of confidence would be vital), but good, honest salesmen. That article from "The Weekly Standard" is very good. I guess there's very little reporting on the fact that the there are a lot of rapes among the refugees in Germany. "Female companionship" (as in they're looking for female companionship) must be a euphemism.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of these countries go to war. Being told that you must take a certain number or that you're not moral if don't-knowing full well that it will destroy your cultural identity- can't lead to positive feelings among nations. Heat was a great film, one of the best action films of all time. Michael Mann is really hit and miss. For every Heat he makes a Legend, but when he's good he's really, really good:
Gladiator Manhunter Thief Heat Its hard to believe the guy that created the Miami Vice TV show could do such an awful job with the Miami Vice movie. But while Public Enemies was meh, the TV show Crime Story was excellent. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 22, 2015 12:54 AM (39g3+) 354

The west is not responsible for Syria, but we're responsible for not stopping their invasion into the lives of gullible westerners. And our civilized culture is responsible for engines that need oil, and for developing their fields.
Hillary and Obama ARE responsible for kicking our Mubarak and Qaddafi, and for the hasty retreat from Iraq. Many/most of those alleged Syrian refugees are from other places. The west should take none ... build them camps in the world their people are destroying ... rather than give them aid in taking over our developed countries. Or give them nothing and let the wonderful UN force those countries to take care of their own. Surely the UN could do that? ha Posted by: Illiniwek at September 22, 2015 12:55 AM (I6695) 357

At Gateway Pumdit there is a video
Young muscled Muslim man is at the fountain in a town square in Scotland. Screaming, literally screaming, verses from the Koran into a mega phone, intimidating passers by. In the distance, off camera you hear something else. Bagpipes. Someone is playing bagpipes. It's a thin teenage boy, and he slowly marches to the square playing as though he is in a parade. He is playing The Flower of Scotland, the national anthem. As he approaches a crowd gathers and they begin to cheer. The young piper slowly marches around the fountain and the Islamic radical, playing. Which he does until the police arrive and cart the radical away. Illiniwek, each case has its own dynamic, butno, unlikely either regime survived regardless of US policy. Mubarrak was finished, even the Army had had enough of his delusions of family dynasty. The brief flirtation with Brotherhood nonsense may/may not have occurred without US pressure, but the ultimate outcome (return to Army dominance) was a near certainty anyway. Libya, no again. Brother Colonel was finished. He leaves the way he did, or 6 mos. later, no difference.Tribal/geographic dynamics were no more permanently changed than the Alawites accomplished in Syria, both regimes rode different tigers and their fate is no surprise. US policy in each case was indefensibly stupid and of course has led to much reduced US influence and options, but that's not the same thing as causing the demise of tired and doomed autocracies. Iraq was of course a complete and indefensible about-face, nothing the least bit inevitable about everything there. Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2015 01:17 AM (QDnY+) 383

thx rhomboid ... yeah, Mubarak was probably going to go, but Obama pushing the Muslim Brotherhood hurt our standing there. Hard to know the details of Libya, but obviously any transition was not handled well. Qadaffi's armories were not protected so we have all those shoulder fired rockets out there loose, as I hear it.
The ISIS development seems responsible for much of the massive exodus of "refugees" and migrants. That seems to no small degree to Obama's pentagon gang rewriting intel to show "al Qaeda is on the run" and that ISIS is the JV team. In that sense, I still think Hillary/Obama deserve a lot of the credit for the European invasion. Not for the general unrest of the region, but for not containing it, and maintaining some stronger alliances. Of course ending our hegemony in the region (and the world) was an Obama goal from day one, it seems. Posted by: Illiniwek at September 22, 2015 01:32 AM (I6695) 396

The biggest lie that the Left ever convinced everyone of was that nationalism was the sinful and broken part of Nazism, conveniently forgetting the role of the Socialism... while the regime got exactly the same effects as Stalinist, Maoist, Bolivarian, Khmer, Cuban, Vietnamese, and every other brand of socialism ever invented. I say that the Socialism is what was broken, and was broken all along and that nationalism in reasonable doses is a very healthy thing. Illiniwek, to some degree I'm picking nits, and we both understand how disastrous US policy has been in the region under our current management. I'm wondering about the actual causes (well, timing more than anything) of the current migration wave (again, mostly not refugees). Not obvious, and I have not seen any good explanations. As the commentary Maet cites above notes, this is a migration from a broad area. The actual refugee flows due to Syria mostly occurred several years ago, and stopped in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey (mostly). Unlike others, I have no confidence that this will be the straw breaking any camel backs in Europe. Sure, many of the more sane smaller countries (central Europe, Denmark) are furious - but they're trapped. Russia to their east, a dysfunctional EU/Pax Germanica to their west. America - far away in any case, but essentially gone/poof/disappeared as a force for good. Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2015 01:54 AM (QDnY+) 428

Because I keep telling him that I think most people either hated or just tolerated high school. It's only if you're able to find some little niche such as doing sports or music or drama or finding one of two classes you like and some friends that are o.k. that you don't feel like pulling out your hair. My son doesn't have friends so if he finds a teacher he likes that's a good thing. Small class too-only 12 kids.

Hope I'm wrong - hmm, this may sound weird - but I don't see any dramatic or kinetic goings-on in Europe due to this mass migration (or the breath-taking display of top-down near-autocratic rule by the EU and Germany in trying to force its acceptance). We've seen the re-appearance of borders and the quick reform of refugee benefits and asylum policies in a few smaller places. But overall? I don't think Europeans have it in them to do much about it (that's a broad brush, obviously, but net-net I think Brussels and Berlin get their way here). Posted by: cthulhu at September 22, 2015 01:39 AM (EzgxV) Choice Four: Re-learn that nationalism is not a sin and save their goddamned countries. I hope that's the one they go with, but I have my doubts. Just look at how the globalists have wrecked our society, and I think it becomes even more self-evident. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at September 22, 2015 01:52 AM (J+mig) Sorry, Cato, but embracing any sort of nationalism is a fast track to genocide.....because so much has been given away for so long to those who had so little to do with its creation -- it's going to be clawed-back, with interest. It's not the sort of genocide where, for example, all French Muslims will suffer. There will be many highly successful French Muslims that will do fine, and many assimilated French Muslims will get by -- but the banlieues will burn, and not from within. It felt like a gulag, full of people I'd never want to be around, who were all either in the same boat or part of the system, and the propagantastic teachers didn't help. Not having many/any friends can be a blessing and a curse. It's better to be alone than it is to have horrible people dragging you down, but that's a cold comfort. Yeah Jarvis, that Walker statement is a real doozy. Not only does one of the few solid names in the race never get out of the starting blocks, but as he stumbles he calls (in effect) for the others to make sure that the party stop anyone outside the mushy middle. Pathetic, really. Kind of fascinating, of all people Kasich has (maybe even twice?) publicly said that Trump is a result of GOP failures, and that people ought to consider why he is riding high. This remains the only acknowledgement I'm aware of that there is good cause for intense dissatisfaction among GOP voters. Walker's farewell statement sort of confirms that he, like most (all??) of the GOP hopefuls, are simply not adequate for this moment in US history. I've been thinking about the refugees trying to walk to Germany and I think that I have a solution.
When there has been something that people around the world really wanted a lot of, like McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Disneyland did we force people to come to the United States to get it? No. Of course not. We franchised it out and allowed foreigners to participate in the creamy goodness by guiding them in the construction of thousands of restaurants as well as Euro Disney and a Disneyland somewhere in Asia. Germany is obviously a product that is ripe for franchising. As in the case of franchises like Kentucky Fried Chicken, the hard work of building and operating the local franchises will be done by the locals but they have to do this building in accordance with the franchise agreement and subject to the corporation taking away their franchise if they add too much local ambiance or do not keep up with the cleanliness standards. Many corporations will help new franchisees get established and Germany should be no exception. I suggest that the tens of thousands of military age men trying to get into Germany should be offered to opportunity to enlist in the Bundeswehr Franchise Army which will be modeled somewhat along the lines of the French Foreign Legion including the bit about all the officers being native born Germans. Initially I would have all the NCOs be Germans as well. One variation from modern day Germany where almost everybody is an atheist (Look at their ID card. It says right there.) is that I would require all aspiring Germans to be baptized as Lutherans or Catholics and require them to attend church services while they are in the military. This is to make them apostates in the Muslim world and make them less willing to surrender, run away or desert. I would also require that they all get at least one prominent Christian religious tattoo. An image of the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe covering their entire back like some Mexicans have would not be required but a tasteful Sacred Heart of Jesus tattoo or a staid Lutheran cross would be acceptable. At least one Christian tattoo should be visible when wearing a short sleeved shirt. In any event, there ought to be plenty of areas in Syria where the Franchise Germany idea would be very popular and once it catches on, I can see enormous growth potential. IIRC Assad and the remaining Syrian government are remnants of the Baathis movement. Interesting ways of choosing a leader. But it sounds tempting. From the Golden Bough.
"To take examples. In a previous part of this work we saw that in Cambodia it is often necessary to force the kingships of Fire and Water upon the reluctant successors, and that in Savage Island the monarchy actually came to an end because at last no one could be induced to accept the dangerous distinction. In some parts of West Africa, when the king dies, a family council is secretly held to determine his successor. He on whom the choice falls is suddenly seized, bound, and thrown into the fetish-house, where he is kept in durance till he consents to accept the crown. Yeah, personality and charisma go along way. They count for a lot more in this country than say, oh, a production record. See, we'd take an articulate, inexperienced radical in a Zegna suit in the white house before we'd put a rather inarticulate, experienced, successful, and accomplished businessman in there.
Facts are stubborn things, and the fact of the matter is Trump actually has a record of outstanding production (i.e., success, accomplishment). but let's face it, at lest Trump would do something about this immigration mess.
No, he wouldn't, he'd do exactly what Republicans have done for years, talk tough and then do nothing because his biz pals want their cheap labor. Trump supporters can't keep holding up his history as a businessman and then ignoring the fact his biz cronies want their cheap labor, not to mention that Trump himself has taken advantage of that cheap labor. Repubs spent most of the Bush Jr years promising to build a wall, it was a lie then and it's a lie now with Trump. Posted by: All Teh Meh at September 22, 2015 04:53 AM (VviqM) 489

Oh look, Mark Zuckerberg and Oprah Winfrey learn the hard way that throwing massive wads of money at inner-city schools achieves exactly ZILCH:
http://tinyurl.com/oxx38dp 5 years after Facebook pledge, Newark schools struggle "NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - When Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg appeared on Oprah Winfrey's show five years ago this week to announce a $100 million donation to remake education in Newark, it was presented as an effort to make a struggling city a national model for turning around urban schools...." The audience oohed and ahhed and everybody wept with joy and give each other smugness-affirming hugs of progressive righteousness. Five years and $100 million later, the schools are basically no better off than they were before. Sure, the article does its best to hem and haw and muddle the facts with idiotic anecdotes, but the real "metrics" don't lie: overall, not only have test scores not gone up -- they've gone DOWN despite the massive cash infusion. Furthermore, bad teachers are still protected for life by the unions. Except now, they are kept out of the classroom, and instead are assigned do-nothing back-offce jobs AT FULL PAY FOR LIFE because union rules forbid firing any teacher no matter how bad. The salaries of these ghost-teachers just on their own sucks up all of Zuckerberg's cash and much more besides. I'd say "ain't that a shame," but frankly I just don't give a shit any more. Zuckerberg and Winfrey will in reality not learn jack doodle from this fiasco -- they'll just repeat the same feel-good gesture so as to earn their progressive brownie badges. The problem is not money, the problem is the "social justice curriculum" and all the bullshit they teach kids instead of hard cold facts and knowledge. Unions and Gramscian brainwashers have destroyed public education, and they can just choke on their cash and continue to fail forever as far as I care any more. Get your kids out of public school. Period. That's the only solution. Escape. Posted by: zombie at September 22, 2015 04:57 AM (jBuUi) 491

Some news sifting out from behind the Sugar Curtain, so to speak.
When the Pope held those giant masses in Havana, there weren't enough Catholic liturgy books to go around. Not hard to believe, in a country that's been officially godless for over 50 years. So they had to put out a call for books from all over the Spanish speaking world. Yes. It was a regular Cuban Missal Crisis. Posted by: Stringer Davis at September 22, 2015 05:41 AM (xq1UY) 494

There was a story recently about a New Jersey school teacher who had won a court case so that he could not be fired from his $90,000 a year job for being late more than 200 times. I appreciate that the cost of living is higher in New Jersey than in most other places in the country but seriously, I never want to hear anybody complain that teachers are not paid enough. Independent.co.uk world news - middle east Syrian Kurdish leaders plan to capture the last border crossing point between Syria and Turkey held by Isis, making it impossible for jihadist volunteers from Europe and elsewhere to reach Isis-held territories. That seems a little odd to me. Refugees by the tens of thousands are fleeing Syria into Europe to escape the war while at the same time jihadist volunteers from Europe, in the tens of thousands, are going to Syria to fight for the Islamic State? Ok, so the refugees aren't from Syria. The volunteer fighters don't know what they are getting into, and the people who do know are getting out. Ok, I guess that works. Turkey doesn't like the Kurds, and wouldn't like them taking control of a border town. Apparently Turkey would rather have the Islamic State forces in control of the border? http://preview.tinyurl.com/p22wwcw Meanwhile the US gives support to the Kurds much to the annoyance of Turkey. The Kurds the US is supporting apparently are linked to Kurdish Communists. Maybe the Air Force could use some of those MOAB that were claimed to be the most powerful non-nuclear bombs in the world at the time. One thing I don't get about AR-15s: Why is there such a demand for 16" barrels, and so little for 18 and 20" barrels? The length difference seems pretty minimal to me, and I kind of get the impression that the 20" barrels may be a bit more reliable than shorter ones, at least with less-than-stellar ammo.
I get the use of a shorter barrel for indoor defense work, but it seems like the longer barrel has the edge in every other way... Posted by: Grey Fox at September 22, 2015 07:42 AM (bZ7mE) 543
