Quote of the Day II

From the video, I take it that Madam Hillary has now been coached to smile through the apocalypse. Hillary 5.0 is the new, newly "relatable" Hillary - if you can ignore the incredibly grating tone of voice. That is going to require further work. In the meantime, just turn down the sound.

-- Scott Johnson on Hillary's appearance on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer

Quote of the Day III

Allow me to suggest a radical new mindset for my generation as it confronts the issues of nuclear disarmament, Russian and Chinese aggression, and nuclear proliferation: extreme humility. Instead of "boldly" proclaiming the need to raise awareness, let's utilize our generation's greatest asset-access to data-and truly understand the issues before trying to solve anything. Instead of proposing "fresh ideas" for their own sake, let's recognize that we are not the first generation to deal with these issues and probably will not be the last. Instead of studiously avoiding specifics or hard choices, let's face a messy reality and not simplify an increasingly complex world to bumper-sticker activism.

-- Matthew R. Costlow in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

Quote of the Day IV

By yesterday morning, though, it was clear that Mom wasn't getting better, so off she went to the hospital. Given her fall history, even though Mom doesn't appear to have fallen again in the last two weeks, she got a CAT scan, which showed massive fluid intrusion into the brain. The choices given to me were immediate brain surgery or wait for her to die, with death occurring within one to twenty-four hours. My mother, although she is a deeply negative person, has a ferocious will to live, plus good organ health, so it was a no-brainer for me to authorize the surgery.

I don't care that Mom's old. She's someone who values her life and I'm only grateful that her insurance is such that I was able to make the decision for her. It would have been awful if the decision rested in the hands of some DC or Sacramento bureaucrat who sees only my Mom's age and health problems, rather than her vitality and lust for life.

...The ICU nurse asked Mom a question she asks all her patients over 90, which what the patient believes is the secret to such a long life. Mom answered "I want to live."

The nurse, thinking Mom had misheard, started to repeat her question. I politely stopped her.

"What Mom was saying is that the secret to her long life is that she WANTS to live."

"Ah," said the nurse. "I get it. Will power."

-- Bookworm on her mom's recent brain surgery

What Happens When You Ban Trophy Hunting?

Nothing good. For either the animals or the local people.

SANKUYO, Botswana - Lions have been coming out of the surrounding bush, prowling around homes and a small health clinic, to snatch goats and donkeys from the heart of this village on the edge of one of Africa's great inland deltas. Elephants, too, are becoming frequent, unwelcome visitors, gobbling up the beans, maize and watermelons that took farmers months to grow.

Since Botswana banned trophy hunting two years ago, remote communities like Sankuyo have been at the mercy of growing numbers of wild animals that are hurting livelihoods and driving terrified villagers into their homes at dusk.

The hunting ban has also meant a precipitous drop in income. Over the years, villagers had used money from trophy hunters, mostly Americans, to install toilets and water pipes, build houses for the poorest, and give scholarships to the young and pensions to the old.

...But in the countries where trophy hunting had worked well - Botswana, until the ban; Namibia; and Zimbabwe, until its economy collapsed in the past decade - it had accomplished the twin goals of generating income and protecting wild animals.

"When hunting was introduced, we actually ended up killing less animals," Dr. Child said. "That's the irony."

With hunting now banned, there are growing signs that more wild animals could be killed, experts say. Lions, which used to feast on the meat of elephants left behind by hunters, are increasingly entering villages looking for livestock. In the past two years here in Sankuyo, villagers have killed two lions that wandered into residential areas.

Do Black Lives Matter? Apparently not if they're on the wrong continent.

"We had a lot of complaints from local communities," Ms. Kapata [Zambia's Minister of Tourism] said. "In Africa, a human being is more important than an animal. I don't know about the Western world," she added, echoing a complaint in affected parts of Africa that the West seemed more concerned with the welfare of a lion in Zimbabwe than of Africans themselves.

But remember the most important thing in the world is that well-off Westerners feel good about themselves for protecting beautiful animals no matter what the real world results are.

Commentary: I Now Owe My Lion-Slaying Dentist a Sincere Apology

A member of the mob has regrets.

I am an animal-loving fanatic from Bloomington. I was enraged when I found out that my dentist, Walter J. Palmer, had killed Cecil, a popular lion living in a national park in Zimbabwe, with a bow and arrow. I slammed Dr. Palmer on social media. I got a call from a radio station in California. I agreed to an interview. I wanted to rant about trophy hunting. Nothing in this world grieves my soul more than seeing an animal suffer. I wanted to buy Palmer a one-way ticket back to Zimbabwe. And, because I felt so passionately about this, I actually researched the cost and was ready to pay the airfare.

In short, I was part of the angry mob.

But after the initial media feeding frenzy died down, I forgot about Palmer and went about my own selfish life.

Then in mid-August an event rocked my world. Criminal allegations were made against me in connection with a minor traffic incident. As with Palmer's situation, no charges have been filed, but there is an ongoing investigation.

I found out with excruciating firsthand experience that I like the American justice system - innocent until proven guilty. Thank God I live in a country where I trust that the legal system will sort things out. I am not afraid. I believe the law will treat me fairly.

But there is no "fairness" for Palmer.
If you were accused, would you like to face an angry mob? Of course not. Can we please put aside the trial by media and public opinion and death threats? Is it too late to proceed in civilized fashion? I hope not.

I owe Palmer an apology. I initially reacted in anger when I was only focused on the suffering of Cecil. Now I see things differently, and I am sorry.

I spoke to Palmer recently. I simply told him I was glad he was back in practice and that he did not deserve what happened to him. I said a few more things. He really didn't say anything at all. He just hugged me.

It was a brief conversation. I did not talk about trophy hunting, or the awful things I said about him in July. I hope to give him a full apology someday. And I hope that when he hears it, he will forgive me. I am truly sorry.

Lesbos Defiled

And not in the good way.

The Best of Hands Take a Dump on the Army

And the turd's name is Eric Fanning. Weaponsman gives us the gory details:

The Army dumped the name and circumstances of the new Secretary of the Army, and he's a doozy. The youthful-looking Secretary-designee, Acting Undersecretary Eric Fanning comes by his youthful looks honestly: he's young (46) and callow, a career midrange bureaucrat without significant executive experience (.pdf), or private-sector experience, although he's been parked in Democratic lobbying firms during Republican administrations. He has never served in the military and has never displayed much respect for those who do and have. They are there to serve him. He has never held a job in the productive economy.

He is also a proponent of the nuclear armament of Iran, also known as the Iran Deal, which should give you an idea of just how he didn't succeed in one of his previous bureaucratic sinecures, Deputy Director of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism. He is also a former CBS reporter, in the Dan Rather fabrication days. Hey, but he is an Ivy grad (Dartmouth), where he majored in Not Joining ROTC, and that counts for something.

Why pick him, then? To Send A MessageT, to count a valuable bean among people for whom the military exists to enable bean-counting. Fanning is fabulously gay, and his tasking is to increase the social engineering pressure on the Army to make it more friendly to GLBTQWERTY individuals, and more hostile to those who are not, whilst presiding over the readiness and end-strength declines he's already been managing as Acting Undersecretary. He has said that his highest priorities are to forbid criticism of gay (etc) soldiers and to encourage transgender soldiers.

Muslim Threatened To "Slay Infidels" In Church Massacre In Texas; Media Stays Mum

Dennis Prager: Why The Left Loves Change

So why this love of change?

Here are three reasons:

1. Anyone can now be an artist, poet, writer. Without traditional standards, all you have to do is push the envelope.

2. The "new" is inherently exciting. And many people, especially the young, live for excitement.

3. According to just about every poll, people on the Left are less happy than conservatives. And instead of looking within for the source of their unhappiness, they assume the source is outside of themselves. If only things would "change," they convince themselves, they would finally be happy.

Fistfight Erupts over Pacifism in Japan's Parliament

The Diet is about to pass a set of laws which would legally allow Japan to deploy their military self-defense forces overseas. Why? Because China.

Note that this is basically a normalization giving the government the same military privileges that pretty much every other nation enjoys. But as in Germany there's a core element who are aggressively pacifist and not afraid to get violent over it. (thanks to Political Hat)

Chaos in DNC Fundraising

Remembering Captain Benjamin Lewis Salomon

The Japanese were storming through the makeshift battlefront aid station. Captain Benjamin Lewis Salomon -- a dentist who took the medical unit when the regiment's surgeon became a casualty -- had set it up. One crazy Japanese began bayoneting the wounded,

Captain Salomon took a rifle and shot him. Salomon ordered an evacuation.

"I'll hold them off until you get them to safety," he said.

Those were the last words he said. And he kept them. Boy, did he ever. In an act of courage and self-sacrifice rare  even for World War II, Ben Salomon took charge of a machine gun and protected his men -- his battalion -- his regiment -- from a pack of wild, suicidal Japanese soldiers.

Over the next 58 years, the nation wrestled with giving him a Medal of Honor.

Read on to see why.

"We had been walking through piles of dead men when the general gave a sudden start, and then stepped over to the figure of a man who was bent over the barrel of a heavy machine gun. Very quickly, almost before I saw what he was doing, the general took out a knife and cut the Red Cross brassard from Ben Salomon's arm. Then he straightened up and looked around. There were ninety-eight Japanese bodies piled up in front of that gun position. Salomon had killed so many men that he had been forced to move the gun four different times in order to get a clear field of fire. There was something else that we noted, too. There were seventy-six bullet holes in Salomon's body. When we called a doctor over to examine him, we were told that twenty-four of the wounds had been suffered before Salomon died. There were no witnesses, but it wasn't hard to put the story together. One could easily visualize Ben Salomon, wounded and bleeding, trying to drag that gun a few more feet so that he would have a new field of fire. The blood was on the ground, and the marks plainly indicated how hard it must have been for him, especially in that last move,"

What If Men Are Not Just Women With Penises?

And exposure to testosterone pre-natally and throughout life makes a difference.

146 From the link re DNC funding :
"The basic problem for the Democrats here is that the DNC is heavily - heavily - in debt"

---------------------
They can always use the same ploy they did to fund the DNC convention in Charlotte; have someone (like, say, the Mayor) take a $10 Million loan to finance the thing, then afterwards, just default on the loan. No problem, no sweat, no fraud investigation.

The mayor is handsomely rewarded with an appointment as Secretary of Transportation... though he has not a day of such experience.

Not a smidgeon of corruption. Must not be, because the media said nothing about it.

fucking by the front gate, fucking in public, fucking someone elses spouse, fucking a subordinate, fucking for money (in the case of some Army gals), and fucking the locals when the daddy objects

and that is expected and normal and has to be tamped down or it totally fucks up a unit and readiness, as you can imagine

now, lets say you are in Afghanastan and Lt Joey keeps having sex with young men, or in public

its a problem

Only if we allow those who are already here illegally to stay. If the position was a flat "No Amnesty, you go back" and legal immigration was pared down to historic norms (or lows) we'd absorb the influx. Probably with a few more Spanish loan words and some changes to the regular cuisine, and major league soccer might become a bigger thing, but we'd get by.

Posted by: logprof at September 20, 2015 11:23 PM

That's not entirely true, Lauren. There's a good discussion going on at HA on the headline link about the fact that Guy Benson setup the GoFundMe and it states that the donations may also go to causes that MKH's husband supported. Though he doesn't state that in the title and the articles at HA are misleading on that as well. In fact, it's misleading here at AoSHQ also. It's not just an education fund.

And, as LogProf notes, even if it was, why is there a funding link setup not even 24hours after his death to help fund a family who doesn't need the money? Seems tacky. And misleading people into what their donation is for and not acknowledging what exactly the "causes" are is even worse.

If someone media celebrity on the Left did something like this, it would be treated with a bit more scrutiny I would think. Shouldn't be treated any less skeptical just because MKH is someone that conservatives like.

215 Jake Brewer worked in the Obama administration as a senior policy advisor on "climate" change.

Before entering the White House, brewer worked for an organization which included on the board the odious illeagal immigrant activist, Jose Antonio Vargas a virulent LaRaza racist who has worked tirelessly to aid and abet the invasion of the U.S.

I did not know Jake Brewer and I have no personal animosity against him, but Jake Brewer worked against me, my family and my country.

I will not be donating any money to any fund that may potentially go to organizations that would further causes that work to destroy this country.

---

Being skeptical over the fundraiser is one thing. I don't know the ins and outs of the Hamm-Brewers finances, myself, but I think it's fair to say that MKH is better equipped than many to earn a living for herself and her kids and pay the expenses, but it will still be extremely difficult and she certainly would do better with some help. But that's neither here nor there.

The thing people are getting annoyed at is the needless grousing about dead man's politics. No one really cares if you don't donate. People care when you make a big show of it and call his kids "spawn".

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at September 20, 2015 11:48 PM

It's in the context of a discussion about donating money to a GoFundMe which states that some of the money will go to "causes" which Jake Brewer supported. It is quite relevant to discuss where the $200,000 worth of donations is going, especially considering the man apparently supported some left-wing causes.

If this were just a discussion of the man's death, then yes, no reason to bring it up. But the fact that Guy Benson decided to setup a funding website less than 24hours after the man's death with the stated goal to spend some of the donated money on certain causes, then it's quite relevant to know what these causes may be. Since Benson did not reveal those causes, it's quite relevant to look into the background to find out which causes he supported.

Posted by: Lauren at September 20, 2015 11:52 PM

I think it's taken on a life of its own because many people find it completely tacky, to say the least. Many assume that she is well off enough to have her own funds to pay for her children's education. And that she and her husband were probably smart enough to have insurance or at least have setup college funds for their children already.

And then others find it odd that the GoFundMe is titled to be about an education fund, when in the "fine print" it states that some of the money will go to unnamed "causes".

I think most people would could get over the education fund, but add in the "causes" and setting it up so soon after the death... rubs people the wrong way.

That said, no matter what anyone thinks, there's no reason to speak ill of the deceased or their family. If speaking ill of anyone, it should be Guy Benson.

Yes, I know that many people have spouses who don't share their political views, but you'd think that two people who earn their bread and butter from politics would be less able to leave it out of their personal relationship. I personally think I'd have a really tough time working all day to advance certain beliefs and goals and values knowing that my spouse was working all day to undermine everything I was trying to do. It's one thing if your spouse's views change in the course of the marriage, but that doesn't appear to have been the case here.

They don't need to do much - Putin will put enough assets in Syria to protect Assad, thereby Assad's strongholds in Damascus and on the Syrian coast will be safe. Outside of these areas though will probably remain a battleground between ISIS, the various rebel groups, and even Turkey at places near the Syrian/Turkish border.

This arrangement will make things complicated for Israel however, especially if they feel the need to take out the Iranian nuclear sites by themselves.

329 Anna, I am told that P08's can be temperamental in sand, and even though they are really cool, they also have a lot of moving parts. Of course that is a problem with a lot of automatic pistols.
Italy used a 10mm revolver until they came out with the military Glisenti in 1910, it used a light loaded 9x19 cartridge.
France used the 8mm Lebel revolver, but used the 11mm St. Etienne revolver as a secondary arm until the late 30's
Turkey used whatever they had
Spain had a thriving arms industry, rivaling Belgium, and at times Army officers were allowed a choice of what side arms they could purchase. Spanish arms could mean anything from a knock-off of a Merwin-Hulbert revolver, to any of the Browning type automatics in .32, Smith and Wesson type revolvers in .38, and the Campo-Giro automatic which was the ancestor of the Asta A-400, and of course the private sales included things like the Astra versions of the C-98, the 900 series with detachable magazines, some of which were select fire.
Anyways, those were the Colonial Powers' pistols up to WWII

So, you want knock-down, ease of finding ammo, rate of fire, absolute coolness?
I'd plump for the 1902 Colt Alaska model, a small hand can get two fingers in the extra large trigger guard there for a faster pull in double action.
For squee-coolness, probably the Steyer 1912 or the Campo-Giro in 9mm.
But if she is good with the Luger, no real reason to change unless she can't get ammo.

Of course the Astra 901, 7.63 Mauser with a 10 round box magazine, select fire and a shoulder stock - holster...

342 re: the GoFundMe for MKH

I linked it as a courtesy. I see now that that was a mistake given the current state of the commenters here.

I have no idea about MKH's finances. I suspect that they were doing fairly well but weren't rich. And I can tell you from my sister's experience losing her husband to cancer when she was just a few years older than MKH than even if you're in a good place financially, it's typically not very liquid and also you won't see any insurance money for a few months - while in the short-term you may have to pay out of pocket $20-30K to cover funeral costs, travel, final medical bills, legal fees, emergency child-care, and a whole boat-load of other unexpected expenses. So unless you've got that kind of cash readily available you may be hurtin' even if you're 'rich'.

I don't know about the money going to other causes. If it's for leftist ones, then I'm not down with that. But given that he died during a charity ride against fucking cancer I suspect they will be non-political.

You know why we mock the Dkos and the DU so mercilessly? Well the retarded leftism is a good part of it but the main reason is that their politics uber alles attitude makes them soulless ghouls whenever someone on the right dies. They are a mockable cautionary tale - so don't be like them. Otherwise you're just the same type of person except wearing a team conservative jersey.

While some of the comments here may not have been kind, for the most part it is skepticism regarding the fund. Skepticism does not strike me as an unhealthy response, nor does it resemble the nonsense that occurs on the left.

If somebody wants to set up a fund that will be dedicated directly to helping her and her children, I'm sure it would not get the same response here. It's the fact that the funders, who are not members of hers or his family, aren't necessarily to be trusted.

There's nothing wrong with pointing that out here.

Some of the comments here and at Hot Air about MKH, her husband, and their poor children (spawn?!? really? how does that not violate the new banning policy?) are simply vile. If you don't want to give your condolences or your money nobody cares, just keep your nasty vile hatred to yourself. If you have concerns about where the money is going can you at least express them with a modicum of dignity and respect, if not for the dead and his family then for yourself and the rest of the commenters on this forum? A father and husband of a young family died in a horrible accident while supporting a cancer charity. Can you save your anger and your bitterness at <insert any political issue here> (justified or not) for another topic?

There was an extended speech I listened to once that said, "Americans don't like losing." Sending a half-funded, half-sissified, diversified, demoralized group of soldiers into a war-zone is going to result in losses -- predominately among those not serving for God and country and focusing on military readiness. This will simultaneously raise the status of the military military, and discredit the SJW, feel-good, grab-your-ankles RoE, diversity target types. It won't happen in a millisecond, and it won't be complete -- but it'll happen damned fast and overwhelmingly.

One of two things will happen: America snaps and kills the bastards, even if it meant going full "blade of grass"; or America will be proven beyong redeptions at the women and girls are raped and the boys and men castrated and/or killed.

Posted by: The Hat of Grass at September 21, 2015 01:37 AM (vBeA5)

America will not react to the first provocation, nor the second. The atrocities and obscenities will pile up, one slice at a time, while America fumes and postures. Then will come a day when the nation says "incident 29.47 was too much -- and why did we ever put up with the shit at 29.46?" Once the preference cascade starts, this country can go into full genocide mode until offence 2.3 is expunged -- and a lot of evil bastards that needed to be in hell will get their tickets punched.....but a lot of our soldiers, too.

The Secretary of the Army is nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the Secretary of the Army is a non-Cabinet position serving under the Secretary of Defense.

From wiki. Boy howdy, does the new nominee fit the bill perfectly for this job. /s

I read Maet's quoted 'bio' of the new nominee to my mom, and she was SHFH. Then, to be totally cruel, I mentioned that I know a Repub Senator that is almost certain to vote for his confirmation, based on his prior votes. Thad Cochran.

Yes, I'm STILL giving her shit for supporting him in the primary. It's a sort of running joke at this point.

You did not say anything that I saw that was objectionable. People have different experiences of deaths of fathers at a young age, I can certainly relate to what you're saying. My father disappeared when I was nine He went on a fishing trip and never came back. They dragged the river, the had search parties out but never found his body. We never knew if he drowned or what. It was miles of a dense wooded area where he disappeared. Have I gotten over it-yes, but it shaped me in ways that people who had a good father with a longer, healthier life might not have experienced and yes, MKH's children may always regret that they didn't have time to know him.

Jean @351 had a good capsule summary re Russian ampersand Syria.

Most things I see written on the subject seem to pretend not to know that Russia has been "in" Syria for decades. Goes back to papa Assad.

"Warm water port"- they've had one there, for many years. Lots of other things, some of which might have been damaged by the situation (intel listening posts, etc.).

Not saying there's no strategic significance to the current Russian activity, but it's a matter of degree, not kind.

And this is of course speculation, and off the cuff, but I don't think Russian activity in Syria changes anything about Israel's challenge in taking direct action against Iranian nukes. More important are Iran's proxies with offensive potential (Syria now lacks it), such as Hezbollah.

Good morning all. About the post on Capt. Ben Salomon, my uncle was in the same outfit as Captain Salomon and the two had so many things in common that they more than likely knew each other well. At 28, he was considerably older than the other men and only about 18 months younger than Salomon, he was from nearby Chicago; the 27th Division (of which the 105th was a part) was based in New York State and was mostly national guardsman from Schenectady, Albany, Troy and upstate, and he like Salomon was a Jew.

I say that they likely knew each other because I cannot know for sure; he was killed a week before on July 1st. I'd like to think that had he live to see the largest banzai charge of the war, Salomon's incredible heroism might have saved his life. At least until the following year when, had he lived, would have seen action with the unit on Okinawa.

G-d bless their memories.

492 Those are some seriously excellent quotes...

I'm not a young man. I've owned a lot of dogs, and I've loved every one of them. I am, unashamedly, a Dog Person.

Yesterday, as I wrote here, I euthanized the best dog I've ever owned. Hell, the best dog I've ever Known. He was universally loved. Total strangers would ask to pet him, routinely.

And now he's gone.

And in no way do I compare him to Bookworm's mother... but that quote resonates, as does the one before it.

Before you form a *strong* opinion on euthanasia, make sure to experience it. I'm not saying don't have an opinion, or to oppose it, or anything like that. But the bumper-sticker slogans, when backed with ferocity, are childish - with adult consequences.

I've put several dogs down in my life and seen many others pass of natural causes. Maybe others have experienced something else, but let me tell you - and this is barely 24 hours old in my memory - the dog does NOT want to go.

The will to live is strong.

Which doesn't mean that euthanasia is wrong. My beloved dog would be suffering horribly today if I hadn't put him down yesterday.

But it would be nice to see a bit of adult discussion.

Not here. For all of the jokes I will say that AOSHQ is one of the few bastions of actual discussion left.

Thanks for the forum.

503 Well, in the PC world of political correctness, Ben Carson will be pilloried until he apologizes-which he will. I don't know exactly how he said it, but there are probably better ways to do so-"Anyone who supports Sharia law over American law or who has any support for ISIS or a caliphate should never be President."

510 Bullshit item of the day:

The officer who led the investigation of Bowe Bergdahl's disappearance and capture in Afghanistan six years ago testified Friday that the Army sergeant said he walked away from his post as part of a plan to spark a search and get the attention of a general so he could express his concerns about his unit's leadership.

He left his post because he was a fvck-up and high on drugs. Now I ask the vets out there, would you want this idiot in the fox hole watching your back?

KABUL, Afghanistan In his last phone call home, Lance Cpl. Gregory Buckley Jr. told his father what was troubling him: From his bunk in southern Afghanistan, he could hear Afghan police officers sexually abusing boys they had brought to the base.

At night we can hear them screaming, but we're not allowed to do anything about it, the Marine's father, Gregory Buckley Sr., recalled his son telling him before he was shot to death at the base in 2012

519 Ben Carson went up in my book by avoiding the PC and speaking the truth.
Islam is diametrically opposed to everything America stands for.
Even The Donald hedged on the question.

Carson is right, and should be applauded for having the courage to speak the truth.

Islam is fundamentally incompatible with the basic tenets of American civilization. Furthermore, Islam is far more than just a religion; it is a political and legal system, and it is one that is flatly irreconcilable with our own.

We already have Muslim communities in the U.S. calling for the imposition of Sharia law. A recent survey of Somali Muslims in Minnesota showed that a majority of them want to live under Sharia law. Right now, they don't have sufficient numbers to make it happen, but if our government keeps importing millions of Muslims into the U.S., it will be just a matter of time until they do.

Our own idiotic government is setting us up for a clash of civilizations in our own land. Why are we tolerating this? And why aren't more Americans, besides Ben Carson, pointing out the absolute lunacy of this course of action?

520 Scott Walker says we don't need to be bringing in any more of these "refugees". What he didn't say (or at least it has not been reported) is that the US brings in more refuges every year than the rest of the developed countries combined. We are currently bringing in 1 million a year, most from third world shit holes.

526 When Rev. Robert M. Ross, former rector of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, Osterville, MA, arrived at Seminary, he noticed someone had put a sign on the bulletin board with the simple message "Job 7:11"

Supposing it was a Scriptural word of encouragement for seminarians similar to John 3:16, Ross noted the citation and went home to look it up. It read; "I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul." (NRSV)

How awful this person must be suffering! Ross thought, wondering if the sign was a cry for help. The next day he took his concern to the chaplain.

"Oh, that was on the employment board," the chaplain smiled. "There's a job opening at Seven-Eleven."

They do indeed, Vic, and it has been used. A recall got the aptly named Gray Davis out of office, and replaced him with The Governator.

We really got a lot out of that switch, lemme tell ya.

Now, however, the scene has changed. Like Choom Boy, Moonbeam is Too Big to Impeach, and most people in CA -- the ones who notice, anyway -- won't give a shit what Ol' Jer does.

534 For the record:

(from the 1929 version of the Convention)
Art. 8. The following conditions are not considered to be of such a nature as to deprive a medical formation or establishment of the protection guaranteed by Article 6 :
1. That the personnel of the formation or establishment is armed, and that they use the arms in their own defence or in that of the sick and wounded in charge;

Captain Salomon took up arms in defense of the sick and wounded in his charge. The convention is explicit in granting an exemption for such use.
He in no way disrespected or violated the letter or the spirit of that law when he gave his life to defend the sick and wounded men at his aid station.
