Posted by: Ricardo Kill at September 19, 2015 07:32 AM (9ORmX)" World War I was the first war where more were killed by enemy action than disease. Until the "Spanish Flu" was spread throughout the world from its origins at Camp Funston, near Fort Riley. During the Civil War, more men were killed by minie balls than by artillery, although disease killed more than any other cause. Disease was particularly hard on the Confederates because they were largely from isolated rural areas where they had not been in contact with disease germs until they arrived in military camps. It was kind of like the Indians first contact with Europeans. During WW II artillery was the big killer although the services with the highest per capita death rates were 1) Japanese Kamakaze pilots 2) German U Boat crews 3) Allied bomber air crews. In the case of the allied bombers, more were lost to ground fire than fighter pilots so I guess you could also list their deaths as from artillery. Mr. Black and I went to the Heritage Foundation Presidential Forum last night here in Greenville, SC. My drive-by thoughts...
I have to admit I was a little disappointed Teh Donald wasn't going to be there. Not because he's my #1 guy, but I just wanted to see him in person. For the fun of it. Regardless, 10 others were there. By far, the biggest applause from the audience went to Cruz, Carson and Fiorina. Bobby Jindal got modest applause coming out, but by the time he was done, people were on their feet and he was near on par with the reception the top 3 got. I like Bobby. I wish he were getting more traction. He really hammered "the fools" in the Republican party in Washington. It was a Q and A type forum, each candidate getting a series of questions alone on the stage. Good way to get a feel for their body language, their personalities and how they handle themselves. Jeb! was the first one out. Modest applause. But I gotta say, he was second only to Santorum in the seriously boring candidate category. He was more lively than usual, but he's boring. Ben Carson was out next and let me tell you, that man has some supporters. Other than Cruz, people were there in their Ben paraphernalia more than all the others. In person, he is really a funny guy. It was his birthday and the entire arena broke out in singing him the Happy Birthday song. I know there are 2A worries from some people, but you just can't help but love this guy. He's very impressive in person. Mr. Black, non-political junkie extraordinaire, loves him some Ben Carson.
Ted Cruz received a hero's welcome. I don't know why the polls don't reflect how much support he has. He's my #1 guy. What can I say, I'd darned near cut off my arm to have him win the presidency. Marco Rubio got a good deal of applause, too, from the audience. I can't forget and won't forget the Gang of 8, nor his squishy stance on amnesty...but the guy is very impressive. He's really improved, imho, in how he presents himself and his ideals. It's evident he truly loves America. Part 3 below... Carly. The crowd loved her. She looked and sounded great. One thing I didn't know. She lost a daughter to drug addiction. She got a question from Nikki Haley about it near the end of her segment and went on about her personal story with her daughter, Lori(?). I had no idea her daughter died. Aside from that, the crowd went wild for her. She has some sticking points with me that I need better answers on...global warming, amnesty. But this woman comes across magnificently. Chris Christie was last, and about 1/3 of the audience had left by then. I don't think it was a knock on him per se, but we had been there since 3pm and it was after 8 when he came out. Nice reception from audience, but he just didn't hit the mark. He spent too much time talking about New Jersey and his Herculean veto the tax increase pen. Part 4 below... Overall, we had a great time. One point. This event was "sold out," even though tickets were free if you signed up. The floor was reserved, but the rest of the place was a free for all seating. We were in the free for alls. But as the time to start grew closer, we were told we could go to the floor, which we did to get a better seat. I wanted to see the entire arena standing room only and it wasn't. Maybe Trump's bailing out caused some to stay home. Who knows.
Last thoughts. It's remarkable how much better a Q and A forum is done in a format like this, versus the crap the MFM dishes out. What they call a debate is nothing less than a monkey-poo flinging circus where no candidate really gets to show America who they are. The end.
