Quote of the Day I - Universities With Negative ROI Edition

At Bennington College in Vermont, over 48 percent of former students were earning less than $25,000 per year [ten years after graduation]. A quarter were earning less than $10,600 per year. At Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, the median annual earnings were only $35,700. Results at the University of New Mexico were almost exactly the same.

-- From a NYT article on the federal government's new College Scorecard

If any graduates of these colleges paid more than $0 for their degrees, they got taken.

Quote of the Day II

And now the return of Hillary, gliding above the election arena like Rodan the Flying Reptile - caw! caw! Get me outa here! It's not just her, of course. It's the whole disgusting circus parade of identity politics, and PC witch-hunting, and trans-sex drum-beating, and girl-lugging-a-mattress-around-campus idiocy, and blame-it-all-on-Whitey whinging, and drone-strike-du-jour warfare, and out-of-control NSA surveillance monkey business, plus throw in the outrageous scams of "civil forfeiture" under a president who was supposedly a professor of constitutional law - the list of Democratic-sponsored absurdities and turpitudes gives me the vapors...

[Bernie] Sanders functions nicely as a foil to the flying reptile. But the self-labeled socialist has a big problem. The public may be simmering with grievance, but my guess is that they are not especially hot for more redistribution of the national wealth - that is, whatever little remains in the hands of a sore beset former middle class. The absence of any other reputible figure on the Democratic "bench" belies a party now more hollow than a supermarket Easter egg.

-- Enemy of suburbia and all-round social scold James Howard Kunstler's primal scream over the state of the Democratic Party

Quote of the Day III

I have never understood why it is "greed" to want to keep the money you have earned but not greed to want to take somebody else's money.

-- Thomas Sowell

UK Labour Party Goes Full Retard, Elects Radical Leftist Jeremy Corbyn

And he's so far left that even the leftists in the party think he's kind of a radical. To paraphrase Daniel Hannan there's no cause in the world, however vile, that Corbyn won't support so long as it's sufficiently anti-British and anti-American.

Here the Daily Mail gives some of the highlights of Corbyn's views:

Jeremy Corbyn is the most radical Labour leader in the party's history.
The veteran left-winger does not merely advocate a return to 1970s-style socialism, the re-opening of the mines and nationalisation of all public utilities.

Mr Corbyn also opposes Nato, Britain's nuclear deterrent and any controls on immigration.
He refused to support the Falklands War, backed the right of Iraqi insurgents to target British troops and, more recently, has defended Vladimir Putin, ISIS and Palestinian terrorists.

His views are so hard-line he even split with his second wife because she refused to send her child to the failing local state school in his constituency.

Michael Foot, who led the Labour party to its worst post war defeat in 1983, was never so far from public opinion - even supporting Margaret Thostaer's re-taking of the Falkland Islands in 1982.

Not to mention his affection for Hamas and the IRA along with Bin Laden whose killing by the US he described as 'a tragedy'.

Jeremy-Corbyn13

And guess who loves himself some Jeremy Corbyn? Democratic candidate and New Hampshire primary front runner Bernie Sanders that's who.

"At a time of mass income and wealth inequality throughout the world, I am delighted to see that the British Labour Party has elected Jeremy Corbyn as its new leader," Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, said in a statement emailed to The Huffington Post Saturday. "We need leadership in every country in the world which tells the billionaire class that they cannot have it all."

John Hinderaker remarks:

Maybe Corbyn represents, more or less, what Bernie Sanders would like to be, given the opportunity.

I don't know whether that is the case or not, but Sanders' "delight" at Jeremy Corbyn's victory should provide fodder for some effective campaign ads. It might be time to remind American voters what "socialism" really means.

Finland Institutes Passport Checks At Remote Lapland Border With Sweden

You know why.

There's Money in Them Thar Refugees!

The annual report in 2013 from a multibillion-dollar London private-equity firm that counts a French pastry baker and a Dutch shoemaker among its holdings touted a new opportunity with "promising organic and acquisitive growth potential."

That investment was the management of refugee camps.

"The margins are very low," said Willy Koch, the retired founder of the Swiss company, ORS Service AG, which runs a camp in Austria that overflowed this summer with migrants who crossed from the Balkans and Hungary. "One of the keys is, certainly, volume."

"Black Lives Matter" Thug Murdered KY State Trooper Who Was Trying to Help Him

A Kentucky State Police trooper wanted to do a favor for the driver he pulled over late at night. It turned out the man was driving with a suspended license, so the lawman was arranging for overnight lodging for the man and his fellow travelers, including two children.

Those plans soon unraveled, with tragic results. During the stop on a rural stretch of interstate, the driver took off. What ensued was a chain of events that led to the deaths of the lawman and the suspect, authorities said.

Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder, 31, was shot by the suspect during a second stop late Sunday in western Kentucky, Trooper Jay Thomas, a state police spokesman, said Monday.

..."At the initial stop, it was his intent to put them all in a hotel without having to apprehend the driver," Thomas added. "After he initiated the pursuit, I'm sure his mind was changed on that."

The Pork Behind Marketing Pork

For the unhappy hog farmers, the current problem started with the 1985 Pork Law, when Congress set up the National Pork Board and required all farmers to contribute. Today, hog farmers must hand over 40 cents out of every $100 in revenue from pork sales. The board uses the money, totaling nearly $100 million a year, to conduct research and promote the pork industry, but is not allowed to lobby.

But nature and lobbyists always find a way:

You may recall the slogan, "Pork: The Other White Meat." The slogan hasn't been used for years but the National Pork Board still pays $3 million a year every year for the rights. Why would the Pork Board pay millions for an unused slogan? The key is who they are paying. The slogan is owned by National Pork Producers Council. The NPPC is a lobby group and you won't be surprised to know that it is closely connected with the NPB (having once even shared offices).

Teen Shoots Self With Illegal Gun For Second Time In Three Months

A Darwin Award in progress.

A 16-year-old boy was listed in serious condition at a hospital Monday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg for the second time in three months, according to police.

Officers went to a residence in the 7300 block of East Jasper Street around 3:25 a.m. and found the teen suffering from a single gunshot wound to his left leg.

The victim was conscious, police said, but he was incoherent, and there was a large amount of blood on the bed. Police feared an artery had been pierced, and an officer applied a tourniquet to the teen's leg to stem the bleeding.

The youth  was taken to St. John Medical Center in serious condition.

In a news release, police said the "quick action" of the officer who applied the tourniquet prevented the boy from bleeding to death.

The incident was the second time the teen had accidentally shot himself with a handgun, police said. Officers went to his residence about three months ago and found him with a gunshot wound to the leg. That injury was not life-threatening.

Yelp Now Offering Reviews For Prisons and Jails

Here Bloodsnake 1 of Brooklyn, NY gives Rikers Island one star:

The city of New York suggested I stay on the island for 3 months. Week 1 I witnessed a man get stabbed with a splintered chicken bone, I don't miss the midnight shake downs or stripping naked in front of correctional officers and being forced to spread my ass and squat. I was completely depleted of vitamin D and drank purell hand sanitizer and instant koolaid just to feel something. Would not recommend rikers island.  Miss those duchess honey buns though

But the Austin City jail gets more positive reviews, mainly from the ladies:

Listen.... I learned a lot at summer camp as a child but if you REALLY want to learn skills you can use, you NEED to go to jail. I'll explain:

summer camp: You learn how to tie a knot.
Jail - Learn how, using a razor, toothbrush and a lighter you can make a weapon to either defend yourself my the biker looking for companionship OR to shank a snitch!
WINNER - Jail

First, turn the pan over. Most non-stick pans have a gigantic advert/logo/description on the ass-end in some bright paint-like tampo. They aren't supposed to burn off because, you, my friend aren't supposed to use them at high-heat.

Heavy-duty, all-clad, or copper core pans usually have machined punched descriptions on the bottom.

Mexico published comic books on how to soak up US benefits. Of course they profit from remittances, but it would be rude to for US to slam Mexico for bilking our system.

Megyn Kelly had several of them on tonight. My take:

Carly is very intelligent, well spoken but maybe condescending. She said twice that people appreciated what she said "in terms they could understand". Just something I've never noticed before.

Second, Marco Rubio has huge ears. Also I thought he was condescending in saying "our people". Maybe I'm just in a mood to be offended, but they both gave me that vibe.

138 I'll adopt that "boat" kitty, if he needs a home. When I lived aboard the New Dawn, my First Mate was a rather large, orange tabby.

Best. Cat. Ever.

Seven years aboard ship, he was a great friend and shipmate. Sadly now, he's gone and buried outside of my home-office window.

I do intend to get another boat. Something to call a home for my semi-retirement years. And don't talk to me about maintenance costs. This house was built in '07/08, and I'm going to have to completely tear out the front porch deck, stairs, rails and risers, and rebuild 'em from scratch.

They were all submerged under Galveston Bay courtesy of Hurricane Ike. And the cheap assed builder had failed to properly use (to code), hot dipped galvanized fasteners. The result? Every nail and screw is either now a stain of rusty granules, or well over halfway there on the journey to oblivion.

Many other things the house needs, too. I'd rather give the same care to a boat... much nicer to enjoy that cuppa coffee at dawn, up in the cockpit on a quiet morning, nary a ripple on the water nor a soul in sight on the docks.

That boat kitty is exactly right. I can't yet get the boat I want, but the time is much closer than further away. Soon, kitty. Soon.

My best guess - Assad really needs the assistance. While Putin is putting military hardware in Syria, there *still* isn't enough there for massive force projection. In the near future, Syria will be de facto partitioned into a sliver of Assad-controlled territory (with Russia responsible for protecting the coast-line with the Russian naval ports) and the rest a nominally-controlled ISIS wasteland.

254 #216: It's funny that you should bring that up. I've mentioned to a few liberal friends that the ethnic group most in favor of keeping segregation was not whites, but American Indians. And they all basically responded with, "Well, yeah, that makes sense; I mean, they didn't want their kids to have to go to school with white kids."

White segregationists? Evil and racist. Non-white segregationists? Just looking out for their kids, man.

I'm anti-segregation, myself, like, you know, most people born in the latter half of the 20th century, I just brought that up in those discussions as a response to that whole "right side of history" thing, as a devil's advocate sort of argument, and those liberal friends responded with, "Well, yeah, that makes all sorts of sense".

Whether the death toll is closer to one million or two million doesn't really matter to me. Either way, a bunch of elitists gained power and slaughtered a huge portion of their own people in a hare-brained effort to create a "superior man" by manipulating the evolutionary concept of "survival of the fittest", which is all a crock of shit, anyway, if you ask me. Good evening, good people. Stupendous late Summer day in the Adirondacks.

Something I want to say again.

Our country, as we have known it, WILL prevail--there's not an iota of doubt in my mind.

The bedrock is still solid as ever.

Bedrock meaning the three concepts we were founded on.

The first--The Declaration Of Independence--the WHY.

Second, the Bill Of Rights--that which is inalienable.

Third, the Constitution--the blueprint.

All are yet there, just now covered with a layer of filth deposited by the progressive left.

We can clean that filth by our individual effort , insignificant though it may seem.

I have no idea of the time frame, or even if I will see the success of that effort--only that while I breathe there is nothing that can stop me.

So you must never EVER be ashamed of our country, that shame lies on the shoulders of those who would harm her.

But I know one day we will be again that shining city upon a hill, because we're Americans and as such are denied the options of quitting or failure.

Now you may join me or laugh at the naivety.

Plan? Sure--get involved with your community, the school, local government, all these.

Change MUST begin at the basic level, since all flows from this.

Particularly politics.

If you haven't enough time for all of it, then choose one area where you can work to effect just a tiny change.

Enough of you and me and change will come.

To a certain extent, I think losing balloons is a nearly-costless learning opportunity to keep your shit strapped down. And parents shouldn't react by buying another balloon or minimizing things, but by saying, "yeah, it's gone -- 'cause you didn't take care of it."

343 qdpsteve. Wisely and well done, mate.

You know the saying "never stick your dick in crazy"?

Well, that applies to your keyboard, your debit card, your wallet, your car keys and most of all, your dignity, freedom and reputation, too.

In other words: NEXT !

There'll be a much better and more worthy lass along, shortly. And if you're really, really lucky, some 'ette will drop her delicately embroidered handkerchief by your feet as you post on some forlorn ONT. And you'll be smitten, smited and smote, all in one fell swoop.

Just ask our friend Chi. It can, does, has and damn well can happen again.

And with that, I've exhausted my congutator. I have to refill it with Bourbon, neat, to get it back into working order.

I know the old Clifton's is something else, but you and I know it was the old Clifton's. We could meet at the YMCA where I was thrown out a window; we could meet at the KFC I lived downwind-of; we could meet at the church where my aunt and uncle married; at the building at Lakewood High that was supposedly suspended on hydraulic cylinders (myth).....but the fundamental point is that you don't need to meet ME, you need to meet other Morons who actually live there. So do it.

One visit to Disneyland, there were about 4 young kids including myself. One of the others lost his balloon -- Disneyland had balloons with ears that you couldn't get anywhere else -- and it went off and away.....and the kid was devastated.

Kids were whipped into an excitable froth in a day at Disneyland, and balloons were generally purchased during an exhausted exit, so that they'd be floating in a bedroom corner the next day to awaken joyful memories..... So, this kid was all metabolically trashed and riding on adrenaline, got in the car to go home, and the balloon got away.

I don't even remember his name, and I didn't have a balloon of my own, but I felt so bad for his loss.

Radio operates by adding a carrier frequency (94Mhz) to the audio frequencies (440hz) to make them travel and then subtracting the carrier frequency at the listener's radio to leave the tone (440hz) we want to hear.
But if I play 2 notes on guitar they don't add frequencies they come out as 2 tones

Amplitudes add, frequencies don't. Hence, two tones.

Posted by: MAx at September 16, 2015 02:46 AM (LAliD)

Because 'mixing' two frequencies is different from just adding two frequencies. You need a special device AKA a 'mixer' to combine frequencies in a non-linear way where you get the sum and difference as well the original two frequencies. The classic simple example of an RF mixer is the diode ring made up four diodes connected together.

If you run two tones through a mixer circuit, you end up with A, B, A+B and A-B as outputs.

Posted by: MAx at September 16, 2015 02:58 AM (LAliD)

Same hookup, different diode orientation.

An audio mixer is really just a signal line combiner. To get true frequency mixing you need some kind of non-linear response to the input signal - which is typically NOT what you want in a recording environment where fidelity is the goal.

What makes me the most angry, is how the west becomes more ethical, more tender of conscience, and socialists and muzzies merely see this as an opportunity to dupe and destroy them. So paradoxically, a more moral society will lead to a regression to barbarism, since the most generous hearted will allow themselves to be guilted into submission and destroyed by callous sociopaths who are fluent in the sophistry of victimization. It's maddening.
