Obama: We Should Remember 9/11 By Agreeing To Take In At Least 10,000 Syrian Refugees

Not actually what he said but the timing draws one to that thought.

The proposed resettling of at least 10,000 Syrian refugees would be allocated out of a U.S. quota of 75,000 refugee admissions slated for next fiscal year, beginning October 1, a senior administration official said.

That quota applies to refugees from all over the world and is set at the beginning of the fiscal year, but Obama can raise that quota if there's a crisis.

Already, a Senate aide said that Kerry had told senators that "they'd seek an additional increase beyond that," referring to the 75,000 quota.

"He gave a range of numbers," the aide said. Kerry mentioned a potential new total as high as 100,000, as well as other possible maximum numbers, according to the aide.

Swell.

What could go with bringing refugees into the US from nations torn apart by Islamic terrorism? Oh, right.

Let's be honest about a few things....

-The situation in Syria is terrible. It's a staggering humanitarian crisis.

-Many if not most of the people fleeing are probably ordinary people who mean no harm to us.

-History has shown that large pools of Islamic refugees in the US and the west will become recruiting grounds for terrorist groups.

-Some of those refugees or their American born children will become terrorists.

-If we refuse to let them in, we won't have to face these particular problems.

Proponents of resettlement will say things like, "Oh we can screen them very well it'll be fine. Why do you hate brown people?" Don't buy their happy talk.

We don't know what percentage of people we bring here will become radicalized but a certain percentage will.

The question is, what level of increased threat and how many actual terrorist attacks are you willing to take because of your feels? For me the answer is zero. The only way to ensure that there is no threat is to not admit this group in these large numbers. We are going to wind up plopping a large number of them down in some area, like we did with Somalis in the 90s. Most won't become terrorists but some will be unable or unwilling to adjust to the west and find themselves targets for recruitment. This is just an undeniable reality.

So what's your priority? Humanitarian relief knowing you will pay for it in terrorism to one degree or another down the road or security?

For me it's security and the only way to ensure it from this cohort of refugees is abstinence.

I'm closer to Rand Paul than I am Marco Rubio on the surveillance state. I'll be damned if you tell me I have to keep accepting a bigger security state while willing you're importing more threats.

In a way this is the Holy Grail of government...we need more security and bigger government, we should also import more threats, now that we've imported more threats we need bigger government, and so on and so on and so on. It's the self-licking ice cream cone.

But as Peggy Noonan points out, it doesn't matter what the littles want or don't want. The elites want open borders and by God they will have them.

Rules on immigration and refugees are made by safe people. These are the people who help run countries, who have nice homes in nice neighborhoods and are protected by their status. Those who live with the effects of immigration and asylum law are those who are less safe, who see a less beautiful face in it because they are daily confronted with a less beautiful reality—normal human roughness, human tensions. Decision-makers fear things like harsh words from the writers of editorials; normal human beings fear things like street crime. Decision-makers have the luxury of seeing life in the abstract. Normal people feel the implications of their decisions in the particular.

The decision-makers feel disdain for the anxieties of normal people, and ascribe them to small-minded bigotries, often religious and racial, and ignorant antagonisms. But normal people prize order because they can’t buy their way out of disorder.

People in gated communities of the mind, who glide by in Ubers, have bought their way out and are safe. Not to mention those in government-maintained mansions who glide by in SUVs followed by security details. Rulers can afford to see national-security threats as an abstraction—yes, yes, we must better integrate our new populations. But the unprotected, the vulnerable, have a right and a reason to worry.

It's a WSJ piece so here's the link to the Google search return (via Jeff B.)

I enjoy a good "I told you so" as much as anyone but I will not enjoy the inevitable proof of how terrible this decision is because it will be demonstrated in blood.

22 As I mentioned yesterday, the answer is for the US, along with any ally that wants to join in, to seize control of a sizeable land area on the coast of Syria to make a "safe zone" for refugees.

Use temporary tents and things for the immediate needs, but start building a permanent town/towns. Expand the area as needed and declare that it will be a US protectorate for at least the next 100 years.

This approach will allow us to use colonialism to solve the Middle East problem while being praised as saviors to the refugees.

Also, it keeps them in or near their own country.

23 This is ultimately the failure of compassionate conservatism.

Yeah, I know, people get tired of the "Bush's fault" nonsense, but I'm sorry, it is.

Unless you can guarantee to control the outcome of a conflict, and unless you are going to be in power for the entirety of its aftermath, eventually someone will come along and lay at YOUR doorstep, the detritus of your efforts.

It doesn't matter how "compassionate" or even how competent you were when it started. Eventually someone with less of both was going to start calling the shots.

It's to dilute its meaning - Obama also makes Thanksgiving a "National Day of Service" every year.

No.

9/11 is about remembrance and *anger* - heightened awareness of who the enemy is and the resolve to fight them.

Thanksgiving is about being thankful for this exceptional country.

Of course. People who justify such decisions with this argument overlook the obvious fact:* many if not most people generally are ordinary people who mean no harm to us.

But what "many if not most" do is not relevant. It's what the fringe element, the 1%, do that's relevant. So we need to turn the argument around, and look at the likely actions of the statistical outliers. The most extreme Mormons or Buddhists? Not a problem. The most extreme Muslims? Huge problem.

That's 100,000 more welfare recipients who will then be able to bring over their extended families to suck more welfare and never, ever leave.
______________________

Yes, Breitbart had an article up recently on the stats for the middle-eastern "refugees" the U.S. has already taken in over the past decade.

We've taken in 20% of the entire globe's "refugees," despite the fact that the U.S. is only about 5% of the world's population. (Keep that in mind when some lefty tells you we're not doing "our fair share").

Over 90% of the ME refugees already in the U.S. are on food stamps. Over 70% of them get all their medical care courtesy of U.S. taxpayers (i.e., on Medicaid). Almost 70% of them receive additional welfare to pay their every day living expenses, and on and on and on.

These "refugees" never leave either. And once they get their green cards (which the Obama administration has been handing out over and above, by large numbers, the numerical yearly limits imposed by congress, they are legally entitled to stay for life, and they're also entitled to bring in their extended family members.

It's insane.

I don't know that Germany is competent to handle it. in the long run. Good for your friend but in the long wrong it will the death of their country.

The National Review article posted last night summed it up pretty well. By accepting all the refugees-Merkel has placed her priorities with people rich enough to get here. What about the Christians and others who are trapped there?. What about the others who are too poor to pay human traffickers to get to Europe.? What ones who will be used possibly in brutal unsafe ways by traffickers to get here? People from another culture who don't speak the language and don't accept its culture will not assimilate easily and will be more open to radical elements who obviously have come over with peaceful Syrians too.

Merkel will bully others EU partners to accept more refugees-when they don't want them? That ought to work out well/sarc.

Liberals annoy the hell out of me with their "don't be judgmental" crap. (Actually, they annoy the hell out of me generally, but this is just a case in point.)

Don't be judgmental? Rendering judgment is what adults do all the time, and quite rightly too. (Although given the quality of liberals' judgment, perhaps it is better if they keep it to themselves.)

Adults are constantly deciding that A is good, B is bad, C is mixed, and that rendering of judgment is fundamental to the functioning of society, just as grading (academic judgment) is fundamental to the functioning of academia.

120 This whole focus on refugees is in some ways appropriate because there are actual people suffering. However, what I think needs emphasis from the mouth of every Republican candidate BEFORE he/she talks about what to do with the refugees, is a strong statement that the very reason there any Syrian refugees is because of the Obama policy of arming Islamic militants to try to over-throw Bashar al-Assad.

So far, I've heard one or two of them begin each interaction with the press in this way, Walker especially, but it needs to be coming from each of them. Democrats never hesitate to blame any situation on Republicans and we need to be similarly aggressive, especially since it actually is as a result of a policy choice made by the president.

If you started from a flawed premise, you will have flawed conclusions. When you make plans based on flawed conclusions, those plans are flawed.

The time and money would be better spent eliminating the threat from

Assad is the one who is systematically expelling them. He wants fewer Sunnis in his rump state of West Syria and there aren't a lot of Shias and Alawites among the refugees.

159 The best outcome for Obama is if voices on the right start yammering about how evil Islam is, and all that typical noise. Then they will have some small bit of credence to justify their strategy of making the discussion between "bigots" and "poor, defenseless refugees."

The only way to get this discussion onto some grounds that we can fight on and potentially win, is to keep it on root causes and bad policy choices, while simultaneously expressing large amounts of sympathy for the refugees, themselves.

We need to stop taking the bait Obama offers us. Lucy, football, rinse and repeat.

Well, Bush (he whose fault this is) was prepared to expend political
capital and a lot of American lives to do something about it. I'm sorry
that others squandered the opportunity to confront and defeat evil, and
I'm sorry so many here lay at Bush's feet the atrocities committed in
the name of Allah.

Hear, hear. Dubya did his job as Commander-in-Chief and tried to fight the good fight against the people responsible for 9/11, and those who gave them refuge and assistance. The "dissent is patriotic" Democrats and their LSM enablers hindered him at every turn and did more to limit victory over Islamofascism than the Islamofascists themselves. Then Obummer got elected, and he has spent 2 terms undoing everything we've done in the Mideast since Bush the Elder.

It's not Bush's fault. It never was his fault. We know whose fault it was, and Hillary "dissent is patriotic" Clinton wants to be our next president.

Then they demand that we abandon any defense we have against things that are truly dangerous, like terrorists, or unlawful invaders, or lack of intellectual or sexual integrity, or corrupt government officials taking over our freedoms "for our own good."

We are expected to give up our security, freedom, and prosperity so they can bask in their own sense of moral superiority.

On the dinghy that capsized, people paid 10k US dollars. Everybody has
smart phones and they have decent clothes. So, how bad can it be?

A lot of those people are not fleeing Syria - they may have left
Syria a few years ago and settled in Turkey. Then they found out Germany
has much better benefits. Like the father of the drowned toddler - we
was living and working in Turkey, but wanted to go to Germany to get his
teeth fixed for free. His greed killed that child, not ISIS.

The term you want is vulkerwanderung Lizzy. First come the soldiers and guest workers. Then after a while follows the rest of the tribe with the women, children, and all their worldly goods. The Alans, Goths, and Heruls are here in the West pleading sanctuary from the Huns. At the same time though they are not citizens, do not want to be citizens, and they can enforce their rule over a helpless citizenry and a corrupt government if they get enough weapons.
Except of course that the Goths at least didn't mind turning into ersatz Romans after a while. I do not think the Syrians will want to do that...

Of course, yours could be something else entirely, so it might be wise to go see a doctor.

rather spend political capital on that than on targeting 10,000 to
75,000 "refugees." I don't think the math makes sense here."

Yes and no. I think that keeping the focus on how this happened is useful. One could say something like this in response to a typical question about "Are you in favor of letting them in?" : "Well, the president deciding to admit these refugees is the latest bad decision in a string of bad decisions that created the refugee crisis in the first place."

The Obama people want the right using words like "invasion" and focused on "Muslims = bad" rather than on the policy failure. They want to be able to paint the opposition as racist and ignorant. Why so many of those on our side allow them to do that by immediately using those terms is mind-boggling.

Now, expand that concept to the entire muslim world, and you've got something. Divvy up the entire "dar al islam" into pieces of a suitable size for militarily capable Western nations to digest. (and I would count China, Japan, and south Korea as "western" for this purpose) Each colonial power gets to own its colony(s) outright, and all the resources, and run the place as a paternalistic despotism. Outlaw the overt practice of islam, and bulldoze all the mosques. Outlaw printing and distribution of korans, and of preaching from said book. Encourage missionaries from Christianity, Mormon, and Buddhism to work in the population. Heck, even give the Scientologists a crack at them.

Those muzz who do whole-heartedly convert get a crack at government jobs within the colonial administration. Eventually, if enough of the locals convert, and islamic beliefs/practice become very scarce, moves could be made to grant independence to these colonies. (basically do what the British Empire tried to do, but was unable to finish)

I thought he cfuked up the occupation. Not nearly enough troops to keep order, and instead of utilizing the ba'athists to runt he country they released tens of thousands of unemployed on the streets. Cfuking brilliant.

That said, I give him and Petraeus a great deal of credit for the surge and for winning in the end.

But then he made his biggest mistake, which was to enshrine Islam officially in the Iraqi consititution, instead of insisting on religious freedom, which incidentally would have gone a long way to keeping the Shi'as from abusing the minority Sunnis.

Either that, or partitioning, but Turkey was really against an independent Kurdestahn.

That said, it was mostly stable when W left office. All to be thrown away by the feckless JEF.

Asked about the numerous accusations of cheating from former golfing partners during a press conference last week, Trump dismissed them as "absolutely false," telling reporters: "I win at golf, that I can tell you."

No, I mean that everybody and their brother has written a think-piece on "Where Walker Went Wrong" in the last 10 days. It's unoriginal and mindless. Especially considering that we have had exactly one debate of eight, there are 17 declared candidates, nobody will cast a ballot for five more months, and Walker is one of five candidates with more than 30 million in the bank already to do ads/GOTV. It's not even the middle of September of the year before, for Christ's sake.

That Q poll has three folks outside the margin of error. Three. Out of 17.

Therein lies the tale; Pew Center research, which does everything in their power to push the "American Muslims are peaceful and just like us" get half that right. Economically they match up tick for tick. The divergence is the willingness to see killin' infidels as a good thing. 7% of US Muslims think it is ok. That is a staggering number. I live in a modest sized town. The church hosts 5,000 parishioners. If that were a mosque the number of folks thinking it is ok to kill me is about 350. Where it gets real interesting is when you drill down in the numbers. In the prime jihadi demo of 18-29 year old males 26% think it is just jake to kill your ass. one in four selfie taking males. Nope. HUD no longer allows that. They just implemented a huge new program of assessing the diversity of communities with the plan of taking action to correct communities that are not sufficiently divers.

Hard to imagine this *won't* be used to dump immigrant/refugee populations into communities that are, in their estimation, too white.

Quotas are what the government is good at, man. Quotas, at least in the pre-Obummer era, were also useful if sometimes arbitrary ways of limiting legal immigration to people who really could use a new start in Land of the Free, or who have actual job skills we could find useful in the Republic.

The only way to get this discussion onto some grounds that we can fight on and potentially win, is to keep it on root causes and bad policy choices, while simultaneously expressing large amounts of sympathy for the refugees, themselves.

Absolutely wrong. First, outside of the mass, it is rare to see a focus on the evils of Islam (nonsense about fictitious "Islamism" doesn't count). Second, anything abstract and partisan sounding will be ignored by most. Third, the underlying problem IS Islam.

No. This refugee issue is a political problem created by a choice taken on policy. the way to fix it is to change the policy, i.e., through political means.

So, "obsessing" over who wins the elections that enable a change (or not) of policy seems apropos, no?

I don't want to accommodate the Left. I want to defeat them. That means refusing to accept the grounds they wish to fight on, and endeavouring to keep those ostensibly on my side from doing the same.

They want us obsessed with Islam and using that kind of decision-making thought process. It keeps us from winning and changing what they are doing.

According to EV, 100% clear that the "side deals" are actually under the MAIN agreement under the terms of Corker-Cardin- and ironically enough, King V. The ones who promise us they'll fight TFG tooth and nail - next time?

Only with the actual problem focused in our minds can we move forward to solving it. Anything else is just action for its own sake.

426 The GOPe and their peeps always think giving the left less than what they ask for is some kind of win. Like for example they want to raise spending by 10%. We want to cut spending by 5%. In the end the left gets "only" a 5% increase and the GOPe and their enablers call that a win.

That's why the left wins every fight in the long run. Their version of compromise is getting most of what they want. The right's version of compromise is giving up most of what they want.

No it wasn't. America has always had its fringe of people vehemently arguing that any newcomers would wreck the culture and ruin the country. Especially if those newcomers were not Anglo Protestants. We've been having this same, lame argument since before the Revolution. Why do you think Roger Williams, and Lord Baltimore, and William Penn had to set up their Catholic colonies elsewhere than Massachusetts Bay? This isn't new.

The world has always sucked. By every objective measure is sucks less today than at any time in human history.

Reagan believed in the inherent ability of every human being and the greatness of America to enable them to achieve their highest potential no matter the modesty of their origins. Most people calling themselves conservatives used to, as well.

432 My thoughts, on topic, are:

If you wanna know why the plan to train the moderate Syrian opposition failed, it's because these refugees ARE the moderate Syrian opposition. They got destroyed by ISIS and Assad, and anyone else got mopped up and pressganged into service.

My plan? Do a 1-for-10 swap. For every 1 person that agrees to train with Western forces, and fight Assad, ISIS, Boko Haram, and Islamic Extremism, and promote democracy, liberty, and freedom for all members of their country, you let 10 refugees in (on the standard you-go-back-to-your-country-when-it's-rebuilt visa.)

They estimate there are ~11 million refugees from conflict right now? That would create an instant ~1 million man "moderate opposition" force- who have cause to be loyal to the West, given that their families are there.

You get ISIS, Assad, Boko Haram, etc. out of the world for as cheap a price as possible, it's the people of the middle east themselves that do it (so no Osama-style complaints about the Great Satan or imperialism) and refugees get homes and shelters. Best of all possible worlds.

488 So I went over to National Review to get my new word for the day : meretricious.

Ok, wait, is this an open thread yet?

And there was this interesting piece by Kevin Williamson, who has apparently lost his mind since Trump is in the news all the time, or is it Goldberg. They all sound alike, I can't tell them apart. Anway. he writes about a militant atheist by the name of Lawrence Krauss at Arizona State, which is one problem right there. U of Az hires better people. Anyway, Mr. Williamson is diligently pointing out the flawed premise in Mr. Krauss's writings, as though Mr. Krauss is unaware of his faulty logic.

To which I reply, the flawed premise is deliberately chosen to frame and then produce the conclusion Mr. Krauss desires, i.e. that all Christians are outlaws, breaking law while claiming their religion is above the law.

It is really sad to see the great minds over at NatReview succumbing to old age, the poor fellows.

I live in what used to be Reagan Country. It's never going to be that again.

"Reagan Country" will never again vote to put a Republican in the White House; it will never again send anyone other than two Democrats to the Senate. Its House delegation is overwhelmingly Democratic. Democrats rule the state internally at all levels from the governor's mansion on down, including having a tax-rasing supermajority in the legislature.

What happened to "Reagan Country"? Mass immigration happened. And the immigrants' imagined "highest potential" turned out to be as... loyal liberal Democratic voters. MAN, was their potential for that high.

The biggest irony is that the permanent destruction of Reagan Country was actively aided and abetted by Reagan himself, who signed on to unfactual romantic nonsense just like the sort quoted above.

500 There seems to be a stupid dichotomy being presented here between "let everyone in without exception" and "no immigrants at all"

I know its easiest to dismiss your enemy if you portray them as idiots and extremists, but almost nobody is that way. Address what people are saying and believe, not what you impose upon them because you're intellectually lazy.

Immigration is good; it brings fresh ideas, cultural influences, food, clothing, art, etc. I love immigrants to a nation who are constructive, positive influences that brings useful skills, abilities, and an attitude of wanting to become a part of a nation and grow with it.

What nobody, anywhere, under any circumstances, no matter what, should desire, is unlimited immigration of anyone whatsoever. A nation has limited resources, space, and opportunities which have to be cultivated, not flooded. Bring in immigrants, but a controlled number, rate, and type. Make sure they are someone who will become part of America and contribute positively to it.

That plaque on the Statue of Liberty isn't the constitution, its not even policy. Its just a poem. Even if there ever was a time when it was wise to let just anyone in because they wanted to be free, we've passed that point a hundred years ago. Its not evil or 'nativist' or anti-immigrant to want your country to prosper and be healthy without losing its identity or wrecking its self.

Unlimited immigration actually is bad for the immigrants themselves because it damages the very thing they are seeking: freedom, opportunity, and economic well being.

But make no mistake, Obama will take advantage of a crisis like Syria to do it "legitimately". You think he's going to stop at a mere 10,0000 Syrians?

You either missed the point, or you're trying to avoid it.

14 years ago, Americans were doing one of two things: either we were dealing with the immediate danger of the event, or we were thinking of how we respond.

Bush and his people made a choice. That choice, to oversimplify, compassionate conservatism. Which, if they were willing to think it through, and I would hope they were, was going to have consequences. One of those consequences was that at some point, when they were no longer in power, somebody else would be. So what was their compassionate conservatism going to leave in its wake?

Obviously not a peaceful and pacified Middle East. Many people could have, and did, predict that this would be the case, that what came after would be made worse by an unwillingness to go for unconditional surrender.

Which is what happened.

You can get angry for people point this out, and you can angry for people who say "I tried to tell you this FOURTEEN YEARS AGO!"

But we did. And still, here we are. Now what are you prepared to do? If all you have to say is "but it's not Bush's fault," that doesn't do anybody any damn good.

This country is not sinking because of immigration policy. It is not sinking because the Democrats control the White House and the Media. It is not sinking because the Republicans are a gaggle of snotweasels.

It is sinking because America was an idea that only works when its people are industrious, observant, truthful people committed to their families, to their country and to God.

The family is shattered and under attack. We kill our own children. We don't trust our government, and with good reason. They do not deserve our trust. And we have turned our backs on the Judeo-Christian values that are the underpinnings of any society that wants to last.

Back to the basics. God. Family. Country.

Yeah, but roofing house isn't automated. Nor is plumbing, or any other of a thousand different trade jobs. Yet, they go begging. Why? Because we've told everybody that those jobs are beneath them, that it's better to go into debt to get a college degree in computer programming so you can sit in an air-conditioned office and wait to be outsourced.

And then bitch about said outsourcing on the internet as if it never occurred to you that the very industry you are in exists to create efficiency that eliminates jobs and eventually that same dynamic would get around to you, too.

You want to know why immigrants do manual labor jobs? Because when those employers go to high school job fairs and offer their company's opportunities, kids turn their noses up at them. There are a number of people who would agree that carving out a refugee "safe zone" and building it for the long run in the Middle East would be preferable than bringing them here or adding to arab populations in Germany and England.

How is that we'll never hear the question asked "why don't we do this" in the press or to public officials?

Why are common sense solutions never part of the national discussion?

We spend billions on solar and wind power, along with ways of cutting usage when we know that throughout history, the greatest strides forward have been made when energy has become more available and cheaper. Why isn't this a big debate?

I, for one, sure wish the paid thinkers on the right could take up the fight for something that would benefit the people they claim to be working for.

Posted by: jwest at September 11, 2015 01:44 PM (Zs4uk)

562 Drew, first time commenter, long time reader.

I gotta disagree with your approach. for me, everything is a question of risk vs reward.
Based on what you say, all else being the same, it is better to help and welcome the refugees than not to help them. I would agree with that proposition.
The question then is: at what cost?
If I understand, you believe that even the possibility of one terror incident is too much of a cost to welcome 10,000 otherwise worthy and peaceful refugees. I agree with that it's a distinct possibility given their origin and their numbers.
Where I disagree is the idea that even the possibility in and of itself is disqualifying.
This is basically the same logic used by gun control nuts: one dead child is too many, ergo we must ban all guns to avoid that possibility.
It's also the logic used by Obama with the Iran deal: there's nothing else we can do, this is he only possible approach to the problem and if you disagree you're in favor of war - by the same token, there's only two alternatives in your scenario: rejecting all refugees or welcome terror.
This all-or-nothing approach is a freedom killer.
Now don't get me wrong: there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about these refugees being welcomed here, among which are the significant risk of terror, as well as societal and potential welfare costs. It's a discussion to have, and it's good to do so. And you may be right that bringing in these 10000 migrants is an unacceptable risk or cost.
I just don't think that we should reject them all out of hand just because there's a remote possibility one may be a terrorist, especially if we can implement some screening procedures that mitigate that risk.
Now I don't know if I believe that Obama will implement proper screening procedures either, so I don't think the risk mitigation will be sufficient. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't at least try to find a solution to help those people who deserve it at minimal cost to us. If the risk-adjusted cost to admit any one refugee is too high, so be it. But it is incumbent on us to analyze that risk.

Immigrants do manual labor jobs because business owners pay shit wages, which 'dumbass programmers' like me subsidize by providing their workforce with healthcare, education, and food stamps.

It's true that these are symptoms, not the cause. Something in the minds of Americans was changed. That change became clear during the 1960's, but I believe even that eruption was a symptom of something that had begun long before. Some trace it back to the Frankfurt School in the early 20th century. Whatever the original source, Progressives have been undermining the very fabric of our culture for a long, long time, and we are now seeing the results of their success. They wanted to destroy us, and we are dying.

Well, not quite. In the vast majority of cases, the cost of labor, i.e., wages, will rise to a market-clearing level.

Some small percentage of jobs will find no applicants at a wage low enough for a particular employer to be willing to pay.

An Austrian economist would describe those succinctly as "jobs that should not be being done in the first place".

Castration has been a feature of Islamic slavery from the get-go. A number of the American men captured by the Barbary pirates were forcibly de-nutted.

IIRC, the Ottoman Turks didn't castrate their slave Janissaries, because, gee whiz, if you want strong aggressive soldiers to fight your cause, they had better have balls in the anatomical sense.

I might also add that those us native-born that DO work manual labor jobs wouldn't mind there being a bit more competition for our services. It's a good thing that I am single, 'cause there is no way I could support a family on what I make doing semi-skilled labor. I can hardly support myself.

644 I don't think that security is even the main reason for not bringing them over. The main issue is the probable inability and desire of people from non-Western, third world countries to fit into a country of western culture. Isn't this the type of problem that the U.N. was made for? Opening refugee facilities in the affected country (Syria in this case) and providing protection to the inhabitants of that facility until order is restored in the country.

You utterly miss the point of stopping the Illegal Immigration Crisis.
If we successfully shut the border and thereby get a grip on the crisis, Democrats will have LOST on that vital issue.

What do you think there campaign slogan would be? "We need cheaper, illegal labor so let's throw BACK OPEN the southern border!" - ?
That would obviously be a LOSER politically.

The Illegal Immigration Crisis is a severe STRUCTURAL problem. If we get a handle on it: it is a yuuuuuge win for the future of conservatives and a yuuuuuge defeat for the left.

646 We have Armenian friends. Last time we visited with them, after a few drinks, our friend started singing a song. And his friend translated that it was about the Armenian holocaust, where the Turks slaughtered them. Even though Rubic has been in this country some time now, he still remembers. He's done fairly well and so have their children. His daughters went back to Armenia to find husbands and I can't say if they consider themselves American or not.

Yes, I am in favor of legal immigrants, with skills that we need coming to this country. I am not in favor of importing Muslims, no matter how badly off they are, when Muslim countries refuse to take them in. I have no desire to see a holocaust on this soil.

650 No humane reason we can't build camps in Turkey and fly in bottled water and food. In fact it's more humane to keep them next to their homeland than sever them forever from the old country by settling them across the planet.

I agree with you but my point was more that given the choice between welcoming some of them or not, we need to think about it before we make a decision. There are very good reasons not to want these refugees here. All I'm saying is "One of them may be a terrorist" is not enough reason to refuse them all - which doesn't mean we should accept them either, again there are very good reasons not to.

Let me use the gun example again: out of a random population in, say, south side Chicago, there's a strong possibility that you may have several gangbangers which are highly likely to commit a violent crime if given access to a weapon. Setting aside the fact that he can get this weapon illegally anyway, is the potential presence of this criminal in the general population a good reason to refuse his gun rights to, say, a head of household with a professional job? Of course not, because you know the head of household is likely to be law abiding and to use his gun responsibly - especially in self defense against the gangbanger.
On the other hand, if you have a population of mostly present or former friends and family members of gangbangers, you may need a higher level of scrutiny to identify which is which.

So, it's our decision to make, but let's make it based on real reasons - otherwise we're no better than progressives.

That's what I strongly suspect.

I can't figure out where Trumpet - "I don't actually give a shit about illegal immigration" - Daddy is actually coming from.

I believe him when he says he doesn't "actually give a shit" about Illegal Immigration.
But is he really so stupid as to not realize how devastating the issue is to conservatives?
Or is that his whole point?

655 One question is: Why are elites so inclined to "open borders"?

Here is an example of one major reason. The author is an American Jewish libertarian whose father had to sneak across borders to escape the Nazis. And therefore he is opposed to any border enforcement, anywhere, anytime.

For a fair number of people, including for obvious reasons a disproportionate number of the "elite", it always comes down to that ancestral memory.

Which, in cases like this, is relevant.

It seems to me we have three choices.

1) Admit refugees, including many dangerous criminals (political and otherwise).

2) Exclude refugees, including many completely innocent people who will die.

3) Fix the region in question so people there don't become refugees.

Choices 1 and 3 will have costs to us in money and blood. Choice 2 is cheaper - but our conscience will not allow us to make and hold to it. Maybe yours. But not a majority of Americans.

So that leaves 1) and 3), and the costs in 1) are delayed. Guess which one will be taken?

Unless a strong body of opinion makes the case for 3).

If that doesn't happen, that leaves 1) and 2), and Americans will not take 2). Even if there is a majority nominally in favor of 2), hardly anyone will want to do the genuinely dirty work of enforcing it, and many people will collaborate in evading it. It's a non-starter; it will lapse into 1).

****

We are not the Dumpster for the World. Choice #2 is perfectly valid and holds up the best under legal scrutiny.

Their desire to come here in no way comingles with our right to just say no.

A Leftist posted a hand wringing thIng on FB about how mean we are if we don't take them all. I mentioned that we should absolutely mirror Mexico's Illegal Alien policies. She clapped like a seal, until I showed her a link to them.

Workplace negligence or change of employers?
