John Sloan's interest in the working class was not only aesthetic, it was also political. By 1909, Sloan was an active member of the Socialist party and used his art to shine a light on the equally noble and interesting lives of the lower classes.

Sloan's painting may portray a woman of easy virtue, as her flamboyant attire and heavy makeup suggest.

A proto feminist slogan, of all things, and far more widely used than one would have thought.

You know what the media and madson avenue is trying to make a Thing now?

Slurping ramen noodles. Ramen noodle joints are opening all over the place (in urban left wing college areas) and customers are encouraged to partak in the Chinese custom of inhaling their soup.and noodles.

This is a very very stupid way to eat. Almost as stupid as eating with sticks.

29 Separation of Mosque and State

The "separation of church and state" has been one of the high holy mantras of the Left, especially the ACLU. It would seem, though, that this separation only applies to Christian churches and beliefs, and do a degree Judaism.

But when it comes to the Islamic faith, religious education is just plain spiffy! Nothing wrong with forcing students to write the Shahada.

32 I invested in Lululemon (LULU) several years ago when the stock was under $6 and before women began wearing the pants in public. It did very well for me, eventually going over $60. I've loved that company. And not just because it did so well for me. For me, it is the perfect company in that certain women, wearing those pant in public, was the perfect advertising campaign.

Lately, it has been tanking (~$40). I tell you, if Lululemon is in trouble, so is America.

*As an aside, if the company goes under, I blame a very famous, very large ass. Only certain asses should be permitted to be adorned with yoga pants in public. I had predicted that fat chicks wearing yoga pants in public, would kill the company. BTW- this should not be considered 'fat shaming'. Fat chicks wearing yoga pants in public should be considered auto-fat shaming.

Ain't been around much at all, but had to say hello today.

My husband is coming home today after a year away!

He went back into the A.F. after 9/11, so there is a kind of symmetry that he's coming home to retire on this date.

I will pray for all those who did not come home on September 11, 2001 and since.

81 The Chinese still eat with chopsticks because they think it increases their manual dexterity and improves their thinking processes. They want their children to eat with chopsticks also, for that reason.
This was told to me years ago on a trip in China, by our Chinese translator. They really believe this.
I used chopsticks a lot on that trip, and got good at it in a few days. At first, they laughed at me, but then I got better. I sometimes use them at a Chinese restaurant, just to .....keep my hand in (so to speak).

97 A bit of a PSA (I suppose)

I have grown sick to death of being pissed off all of the time, and everyday more and more pissed off. It really was affecting me, mentally and physically, and I suppose, spiritually.

I exercise regularly and I decided to develop a mantra, if you will, that I repeat at a certain point in the cycle of exercises, in lieu of counting. It is an extremely positive mantra and it ends on the last count: I will make the world a better place.

It works. It may be corny, but it works. Besides seriously limiting my intake of news, this works.

Just sayin'

Such a ball-breaker:

I was incorporating feminism into [my] wedding. I wrote about keeping my last name and buying a not-quite white dress from a store that gives all the money to charity. I blogged about the struggle Andrew and I had getting engaged in the same month that California overturned same-sex marriage rights. We had actually discussed not getting married until everyone could; instead, we decided to use our impending marriage as a way to talk about same-sex marriage among our friends and family. In our engagement announcement, for example, we asked anyone considering getting us a gift to instead donate to an organisation fighting for same-sex marriage rights.

Posted by: Moderate Salami, weeping for our dead Republic at September 11, 2015 09:51 AM (/Ho8c)

Actually, I read aninteresting paper about that once...It wasn't the steel that was the problem, it was the aluminum.A lot of aluminum got in thanks to the planes being made of it, and aluminum melts at a much lower temperature, something like 700.
Pouring water on molten aluminum causes some really freaky chemical reactions that cause it to heat up rapidly...

So the planes hit the building, the sprinkler systems kicked on, the water hit the melted aluminum. The rest, as they say, was history.

Yes. The low melting point of aluminum could explain the molten metal some witnesses described seeing, and a compromised building frame (made of cutting-edge materials and cutting-edge construction at the time) was overloaded. The elevated temps increased the stress in the surviving frame members to the point of failure, resulting in a progressive collapse.

279 Trump has jumped the shark for me. He seems to only be able to provide ad hominem rebuttals to any perceived slight and never has anything of substance to say.

While he has been the ultimate outsider because of his independence from special interests, his supercilious nature is becoming tiresome. To attack Ben Carson's credentials as a surgeon is a tipping point. He would have been better to stay the line on Ben's energy level and at least it would have had a more accurate sound to it. (But how anyone can consider an active surgeon of Dr. Carson's caliber to be low energy is beyond me.)

It's obvious that Trump will say good things about anyone who likes him, as his comments about Kanye West will testify. So his openly voiced opinions on any matter seem to be more colored by his emotional favoritism rather than any rational appraisal. He has voiced high opinions of some of the Republican candidates (Carson and Cruz, and even Fiorina) and his later attacks on them sound childish and, worse, of little value in shedding light on how he would shape a rational strategy to solve national problems.

Furthermore, he is attacking in that childish way the very other people that have the qualification that has sent his own polling numbers skyrocketing. They are the political outsiders. He is driving us away from him and toward them. The unfortunate difference is that they lack the financial independence that he has, and they will have to deal with the real world as if their lives matter on how they behave. That's a very real distraction and it is a minefield I wish they didn't have to walk through.

297 Is Obama what a president should be?

Quite possibly, by accident, Obama may be what every great president should be. When you think of it, the left has wanted to pass some type of socialized healthcare for over 50 years. Obama did it.

How?

If you listen to Charles CW Cooke and Ace, a president should have experience in how government works. Time as a governor or decades in the senate. Know the names of obscure foreign prime ministers and cult leaders. Get along with others and never embarrass the party.

However, Obama was new to government, too lazy to know any names without a teleprompter and he never missed an opportunity to take a cheap shot at the opposition.

And he passed Obamacare. Something none of his more governmentally experienced predecessors could ever do.

Obama apparently possesses the executive ability to ignore how things are, how they suppose to work and simply directs that this is how they will be.

That's what top executives do. Forget everyone who's telling you why something can't be done and go ahead and do it.

Of course, what Obama wants is totally opposite of what we want. But the lesson on how to achieve the goals should remain.

We don't need someone as president who has spent their life inside the four walls of the sandbox. They have a well practiced excuse on why everything our side sees as common sense can't be put into place. To them, the rules are the rules and they will charge right up the line like tigers then stop and sit like kittens.

It's time the right has someone who will actually get shit done.

Agree entirely. I know a little bit about structural steel design and have done some research on fire protection for steel-framed buildings (and the results of fire damage). Heat does bad things to steel when it's hot enough. But, the temperatures don't even have to be sufficient to seriously alter the internal structure of the material--restrained thermal expansion increases stresses. Cutting-edge building, already damaged by collision, with additional stress due to thermal effects could easily be overstressed and result in collapse at the upper floors. And then you have dynamic impact loading on lower floors.

If I recall correctly, the original designers accounted for aircraft collision and fire in their designs. But not both combined. Depending upon what method of allowable stress design they were using (for example, older design codes frequently allowed for limited overstress for "extreme event" loads like earthquakes) for those particular load cases, I can easily see how the frame could be overloaded to failure.

Let it go.

You can't make people care - and they don't. You can't explain anything to people that literally can't comprehend your articulated thoughts. And you can't reason with people when they literally hold onto their position as a lack of faith.

So - regret and remorse over the failure of a group to respond to an act that you didn't cause, couldn't prevent, and can't in the slightest influence going forward is a waste of your time and emotion. Frankly - feeling any kind of kinship with such a group based on simple geography is pretty silly - when you think about it.

So let it go. Find another tribe. I'm looking.

396 On 911 these thoughts occur to me:

1) The Left/Democrats got busy after 911 to destroy this new resolve of Americans to punish their enemies and to destroy this new sense of community which most Americans felt for each other and destroy any feelings of patriotism.

2) The fact that we elected an anti-American, hard left/commie to the White House named Barack Hussein Obama, who pledged to stand with muslims against America shows how well they succeeded.

And proved that fifth-column, anti-Americanism pays. And pays very well.

3) Then we as a nation stood idly by while Obama destroyed our security, our borders, our standing in the world.

But, worse-

4) The people elected to stop Obama's destruction, the Republicans, joined together with Obama to destroy America and the Middle Class-

while giving mortal enemy Iran the nuke

and joyfully told us to stick it.

5) The Obama/Democrat/GOPe nexus has destroyed our ability to conduct short military "wars" in the Middle East by opening our borders to hundreds of thousands unreconstructed radical muslims who now live among us-

It's fair! Now ISIS can conduct warfare on our soil.

6) Through the efforts of teachers and propagandists like JonStewart/Stephan Colbert the young have been brainwashed to such an extent that they can't even allow themselves to think of muslim terrorists as the enemy-

among other self-destructive nonsense.

Happy 911!

They won.

Back in my corporate days, I had a number 2 who was the best in the business. He had all the facts and numbers in his head. He knew the employees who were 10 minutes late getting in and who left early. He knew which suppliers were 3 percent cheaper and which customers needed extra attention.

However, everything that made him a perfect second in command made him a terrible choice for CEO. It's an entirely different skillset and entirely different worldview from one to the other.

A lot of people don't know that. They believe everything is on a linear line and people just move from one seat to the next level. They're the same people who look at government with the wrong idea of structure to begin with.

These are the folks who thought the president was the boss of the states during Hurricane Katrina, who didn't have a clue what FEMA was or how it was suppose to operate, what the governor does and what their powers are and a whole host of other basic facts.

If we're ever going to get things done, we need the type of person who thinks in those terms. Not someone whose first instinct is "Am I going to offend someone".

440 from Insty-

And here's a passage from Lee Harris's Civilization And Its Enemies.

Forgetfulness occurs when those who have been long inured to civilized order can no longer remember a time in which they had to wonder whether their crops would grow to maturity without being stolen or their children sold into slavery by a victorious foe.
...
They forget that in time of danger, in the face of the Enemy, they must trust and confide in each other, or perish.

They forget, in short, that there has ever been a category of human experience called the Enemy. And that, before 9/11, was what had happened to us. The very concept of the Enemy had been banished from our moral and political vocabulary. An enemy was just a friend we hadn't done enough for - yet. Or perhaps there had been a misunderstanding, or an oversight on our part - something that we could correct. And this means that that our first task is that we must try to grasp what the concept of the Enemy really means.

The Enemy is someone who is willing to die in order to kill you. And while it is true that the Enemy always hates us for a reason - it is his reason, and not ours.

Peer pressure, social cues, etc. Convince them that everybody who's anybody does certain things and thinks a certain way, and they'll be afraid to go against the "popular" consensus. 461 dated a girl for a while that would repeat stuff I had just said. After a while it got really annoying. Like she had a mild case of echolalia. She later turned into a huge lib after moving to NYC. She would just parrot her surroundings.

I had the opposite problem with the Daughter of Satan (the -ex). Remember that grade school game "Telephone" where you whisper something in someone's ear, they whisper it to another, and so on until it comes back around to the originator where it bears no resemblance whatsoever to whatever was first whispered?

She could do that all by herself. I conducted an experiment with her once where I said a specific phrase to her and axed her to repeat it back to me. What she said wasn't anywhere close to what I'd said 20 just seconds earlier.

To say that that scared the shit out of me would be a gross understatement.

Exactly. Losers want, more than anything else, to be told that they're right. They want to be affirmed. To be exonerated from their own choices that have, in fact, made them losers. To be told that they're not failures, that it's the system that's wrong, etc.

And of course, they also get someone to blame if their victory (no matter how impossible) is snatched away.

538 And it also ties in with one of Ace's brilliant posts about a year ago about Jung and magical thinking. We're all stuck with it, but religion builds a cage for it and confines it to theological spheres. Tear down the cage, and you haven't got rid of the magical thinking, you've just set it free to latch onto anything and everything.

The problem with that formulation is that ultimately reason and science itself is built on "magical thinking" - the a priori belief that the world is a consistent place and that our minds are capable of comprehending it in any way. Descartes' project of building a purely "rational" foundation for epistomology failed by the time he wrote his second sentence...Religion isn't something that can be tucked away in the spare closet of our minds - it provides the foundation for everything else.

That is what a lot of conservatives just don't understand - postmodernism/nihilism is not irrational at all, but a very rational response to the removal of traditional religion for the rationale for trusting our own ability to understand the wolrd. Indeed, it is far more rational than a lot of conservative thinking, which retains the fruit of an earlier worldview while rejecting the root that gave it birth.

If they're pathological about seeking approval from everyone, it tends to indicate a weak sense of identity for one reason or another, and that work ethic you've mentioned may actually be a symptom! They might be trying to please the boss too hard. And it would make sense that someone who's successful in a material sense but empty in a spiritual sense would be an absolute sucker for anti-capitalist rhetoric that promises a simpler, fairer life...

542 I worked with a guy at my last job who was ragingly stupid. I called him Gomer Pyle. Gomer was a pear shaped white guy from downstate Illinois who spouted the lefty talking points and thought himself intellectually superior to the conservatives in the office. He would ask us why we wanted to be like a bunch of old white men and not be hip and young thinkers like he was. He didn't know his ass from his elbow as one time he trashed the bathroom while trying to take a dump. He made so much noise people gathered around and when he came out he had knocked things over and broke the air freshener and soap holder. I said, Shazam! What did you do in there? He couldn't take a shit but was smarter than me.

562 I don't know why people are posting "never forget" all over.

We already forgot. People pretty much forgot by 2002. The only memory anyone seemed to have was about how they felt and how scary it was, not what happened, why, or who did it.

We wouldn't have elected a leftist idiot with a Muslim sounding middle name in 2008 if people remembered. We wouldn't be more worried about offending Muslims than fighting terrorism today if people remembered. NCIS would actually have a Muslim terrorist once in a while now if people actually remembered. We wouldn't even remotely be contemplating taking "refugees" from Syria today if people remembered.

People forgot because they wanted to forget. Remembering carries a burden of responsibility and action. Remembering requires you to do something, not just feel.

563 Grau Fuchs, it is a failing in general. Far too many people don't understand the underpinnings of religion anymore. The Norse thought thunder meant one thing while the Greeks ducked fearful Zeus was going to zap them. It is Man's attempt to understand the world around him.

Some religions are better at deciphering things. Islam is not one of them since Allah is a being beyond the universe and is not bound by the laws he imposes on humans.

564 My house has dozens of black walnut trees around it. They shed catkins in the spring, leaflets starting now, the center sticks of the compound leaf in a few weeks and then the nuts. All of these will clog the gutters, and they are spread throughout the year.

The nuts will dent cars, stain whatever they touch, and are a tripping hazard in the grass.

The produce a toxin called juglans that will kill most other plants in the drip zone.

They are the last trees to get their leaves and the first to shed them. But, for a brief period from May until early July they are the prettiest trees around.

The Chinese still eat with chopsticks because they think it increases
their manual dexterity and improves their thinking processes. They want
their children to eat with chopsticks also, for that reason.
This was told to me years ago on a trip in China, by our Chinese translator. They really believe this.
---------------------
That sounds like a better answer than "we use 2 sticks to grab stuff since the Bronze Age and don't like foreign devil tableware".

I too developed forced competency with chopsticks due to a trip to Japan in my university days. For the same reason I still use chopsticks for Chinese and Japanese food; gotta keep my hand in.

570 >>> This was the first thing I laughed at after 9/11

I hope this does not revoke my Moron card, but SNL. The line where they ask Guiliani in the opening monologue if they can be funny again, and he retorts "why start now?"

the first NYC set film after 9/11 for me was Spiderman, when the construction guy said to Goblin you mess with one of us you mess with all of us, I started crying in the theater. And when the show Friends had a thing about 9-11 on their whiteboard, also there were tears. (Wow, there WAS a time when I regularly watched Friends, weird.)

I realized the other day that the younger millenials have not a clue the significance of small things like that in remembering 9-11, those things will go right over their heads. Made me sad.

He doesn't have a chance, because of two things:

1. His skin color.
2. The MFM.

There's nothing he can do about the first. But since the MFM were able to propel a dog-eating, weed-huffing Indonesian of ambiguous sexuality, juvenile presence, deficient intelligence with a 20-year history of anti-American activities and confidantes into the highest office in the land, were they to get behind Sanders, he would be a lock for the presidency.

576 rdbrewer @ 33- ramen noodles
It's how you make them. Start off by browning a vidalia or noonday onion in bacon grease. Then add 3 cups of water or 1 1/2 cheap beers. Throw in a double handful of fresh sliced okra. Simmer until soft enough to cut with edge of spoon. Crush noodles in bag and dump into pot. Throw away seasoning. Add pepper to taste. At very end of prep (noodles are done), add 2 eggs and stir with a fork. Pour in bowl and add fish sauce. Mmmmm!
