Overnight Open Thread (9-7-2015) – Living Like a Refugee Edition

Quote of the Day I

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison, and will go forth and deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, and will gather them together for the battle; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up over the breadth of the earth and encompassed the camp of the saints, and the beloved city.

-- Revelation 20:7-9 from whence the novel, Camp of the Saints, takes its name

Quote of the Day II

Actually we can't do what we like with [Britain]. We inherited it from our parents and grandparents and we have a duty to hand it on to our children and grandchildren, preferably improved and certainly undamaged. It is one of the heaviest responsibilities we will ever have. We cannot just give it away to complete strangers on an impulse because it makes us feel good about ourselves.

Every one of the posturing notables simpering 'refugees welcome' should be asked if he or she will take a refugee family into his or her home for an indefinite period, and pay for their food, medical treatment and education.

If so, they mean it. If not, they are merely demanding that others pay and make room so that they can experience a self-righteous glow.

-- Peter Hitchens

Quote of the Day III

Berlin has said it expects to receive a record 800,000 asylum seekers this year, more than the entire EU combined in 2014, laying bare the scale of the biggest refugee crisis to face the continent since the second world war.

Moe Lane on the Word of the Day: Völkerwanderung

German word, obviously: Völkerwanderung more or less means 'folk migration.' Admittedly, Iron Age European history is a little outside of my patch, but I do seem to recall that the Roman Empire (and later, its successor states*) had to deal with lots of people moving to where there wasn't a war. Or at least to where the people moving could win a war.
refugeemigration.jpg

And while Germany and Sweden are welcoming up to 1-2 million refugees with official open-arms, other EU nations are not nearly so enamored with taking them in:

The Netherlands Crack Down on Asylum Seekers

While Germany opened up its doors to make it easier for those arriving at its borders and France criticised Hungary over its new 110-mile razor wire fence, the Dutch government was going in a different direction.

From November, any migrant who refused refugee status or humanitarian protection will be given less than a month before they are deported or told to fend for themselves.

As part of the measures, the government wants to shut down 30 regional "bed, bath and bread" centres where asylum seekers can find shelter, regardless of the status of their application.

Bookworm on the Mass Muslim Migration into Europe

Europe is also a reminder to be careful what you wish for, because you might get it. Europe wanted a Judenrein continent. Well, as matters now stand, their malevolent oral and financial attacks on Israel will have succeeded, once and for all, in driving the Jews out. But by empowering the Muslims, their tactics will also drive out the Europeans, whether by turning them into refugees, or through their slaughter, conversion, or enslavement.

But Bookworm, you sound so callous, so hard? What about the children?

What about them? They're pawns and pawns always get sacrificed.

As you know, when the world is upset, and most certainly when non-Judeo-Christian cultures are involved, the children always die. That's a dreadful reality.

And you've probably seen this picture of a Syrian child who drowned with his mother and sibling while trying to make it to Greece.

It's sad but remember that the proximate cause of his death was his parents' deliberate choice to take him on a sea journey in a flimsy boat. Their bad choices killed him - not Europe. And also pretty much everything you've heard about this story from the father is bullshit. They had a safe life in Turkey but decided that they really wanted to live better in Germany or Canada.

CDR Salamander: The Waves Have Already Started

No, this is new. The migrants are coming in waves 100,000 strong, month by month to already crowded nations under economic stress and beset with welfare state largess.

These nations do not demand new arrivals assimilate, and in a large measure, the new arrivals don't want to. With modern communication and entertainment a satellite dish away, they don't have to break from the home language and culture they are bringing and keeping is the same culture of violence, sectarianism, corruption and dependence that caused the source country's dysfunction in the first place.

Their foreign and often hostile culture, if not checked to manageable numbers and smart policies, will overwhelm their target nations and inside half a century. Those nations as well will fail as their civil society fractures and loses its ability to function as designed for a nation and culture that no longer exists.

...The time for easy solutions is past. The last generation or two threw that opportunity away. Doing nothing is not an option because, eventually, this migration will shift to invasion in the mind of a plurality of each nation's citizens. When that happens, if good political leaders do not act, the people will turn to whatever leader promises actions. That rarely is the better outcome.

No nation is required to commit suicide, and leaders who desire to fundamentally transform their nations should not expect for their population to allow that change to be done against the will of the people - if indeed the people ever decide their national culture is worth defending anymore.

Why the Refugees Are Making a Beeline for Germany and Sweden

Under the rules that govern how Europe handles new arrivals, known as the Dublin Regulation, migrants can be sent back to the first E.U. nation they entered. Because its reception facilities are so bad, the rule does not apply to Greece. And some nations, including Sweden and Germany, have said they will waive the rules for Syrians.

There isn't a uniform benefits system, either, with nations such as Hungary offering little compared with Germany and Sweden. Acceptance rates also vary dramatically. Hungary, for instance, is granting asylum to only a fraction of 1 percent of applicants, according to UNHCR. Germany, meanwhile, has a nearly 40 percent acceptance rate - and almost 90 percent for Syrians.

Swedish Newspaper Outs Anti-Immigration Blogger

'Julia Caesar', an anonymous right-wing blogger who has blasted Swedish journalists for writing an "epoch of lies" about the benefits of immigration, is herself a former reporter for Sweden's biggest broadsheet, Dagens Nyheter, according to a Swedish tabloid.

...On Wednesday, Sweden's Expressen tabloid revealed that the blogger - who has also published three books - is herself a former journalist for Dagens Nyheter (DN), a Swedish newspaper. . . .

"It is clear that it is not an obvious decision to publish the name of somebody who wants to remain anonymous," wrote Expressen's Head of Culture and Deputy Managing Editor at Expressen, Karin Olsson as the newspaper exposed Barbro Jöberger as being behind the far-right blog.

"But given her great influence and role in alternative debates online, we have decided that her name should be made available so that we are able to have an open debate."

"It is reasonable that such an influential opinion maker should be made accountable," she said.

C'est reasonable pour encourager les autres.

Spengler on the The Price of Europe's Fecklessness

At this point the floodgates of European sympathy opened, and Germany declared that it would accept 800,000 fugitives, including many from the world's most brutal war zones. From a security standpoint it is foolhardy in the extreme: 250,000 people have died in Syria's civil war since 2011 because other people killed them, mostly with small arms or improvised explosives (such as the government's notorious "barrel bombs"). Such killing is a labor-intensive affair, and requires the participation of many thousands of killers. It is isn't only that ISIS (and other jihadists) are able to smuggle to Europe as many of their operatives as they care to, as ISIS itself purportedly boasts. The refugee population itself is flush with killers from both sides fleeing the war. The presence of small children does not obviate this; killers have families, too.

The Arab Gulf States accept very few Syrian refugees out of security concerns which are entirely legitimate. Thousands of Syrian migrants fought either with the Assad regime (allied to Iran, the nemesis of the Sunni Gulf States) or ISIS and al-Qaeda (which want to overthrow the Saudi monarchy).

The social pathologies that this brutal and brutalized population bring Europe will change Germany in a predictably nasty way. Even worse, the open door policy will attract an order of magnitude more such refugees, as the Interior Minister of the State of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, warned yesterday. To no avail: Germans have spent the past seventy years feeling badly about themselves and are determined to take this opportunity to feel good about themselves.

The refugees have given the Germans the sort of frisson of good feeling that one gets from adopting  a stray puppy. This one redemptive act, they seem to believe, compensates for the country's criminal behavior during the middle of the past century. It is one thing to take in one stray, however, and quite another to find a pack of hungry dogs baying at one's door. At that point one calls the dog-catcher.

Army Selects Rarely Used Charge For Bergdahl Court-martial

Military prosecutors have reached into a section of military law seldom used since World War II in the politically fraught case against Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier held prisoner for years by the Taliban after leaving his post in Afghanistan. Observers wondered for months if Bergdahl would be charged with desertion after the deal brokered by the U.S. to bring him home. He was - but he was also charged with misbehavior before the enemy, a much rarer offense that carries a stiffer potential penalty in this case.

There have already been protests in Germany because of the large number of Turkish immigrants there. It may actually come to the point that Europe may have to live by the sword or die by the sword.

25 I get why peoples natural inclination is to try to close up borders, but the problems with borders are caused by the governments and politicians controlling them, they always rig the system for their benefit, the left to build a voter base and the right for cheap labor, and as long as pols and their governments are controlling the borders that's the way it will always be. The only solution is to actually let open the borders and let people go where they want, but that will never happen because of nationalism everywhere, so the pols win and they'll continue winning.

26 But by empowering the Muslims, their tactics will also drive out the Europeans, whether by turning them into refugees, or through their slaughter, conversion, or enslavement.

I think there's enough issues with the policy (i.e., the banlieues of France) to not have to resort to that.

Namely, the Iran deal. It's possible, just possible, that empowering Iran will make this refugee crisis look like a blip.

There aren't because the Europeans are constantly ceding internal territory to Muslims. This will just speed up the process. I figure the elites of Europe will either leave or convert once the Muslim population hits 25%.

It would be more interesting if it wasn't for the fact we are in the process of doing the same thing except with Hispanics. Although they are doing all they can to import more Muslims (Bush isn't blameless here either).

Bookworm is wrong on one point. Jews tend to promote multi-cultural societies in the mistaken belief it will keep them from being singled out. It's just not working out like they thought.

If a few nukes actually fly (and I think the first targets might be Sunni cities like Doha and Riyadh), then it will be a tidal wave of refugees.

The next wave will be when ISIS / Sunnis win in Syria, and then start to ethnically cleanse Syria of non-Sunni Muslims and other ethnics that were tolerated under Assad. What Muslims do best, kill each other.

74 Taking in "refugees" does nothing to solve the root problem.

If it gets so bad that *something* must get done, then instead of importing their problem, we should export our solution:

Invade. Kill anyone who tries to stop us. Declare protectorate. Mandate the teaching and use of English. And since we'll be accused of that anyway, steal their oil.

Since we'll be called "imperial" and "colonizers" anyway, just might as well reap the benefits of the same.

76 Alberta - Healy pics I mentioned last week.

I casually know the guy. Stopped by the hardware store, and there it was. The Prince of Darkness strikes when least expected. The guy that owns it is not a 'car guy', but likes the idea of occasionally driving about in a sports car. He has owned it for 15 years, but knows nothing about it, technically. Just drives it. The under hood condition is pretty bad. Neglect.

Note that it is the troublesome three carb model.

He had been in shopping, came and out the car would not start. There was a tinge of gasoline odor about, so I do not think the problem was fuel. He ran the battery down trying to crank it, thus the jumper cables. I tried to assist, but the guy is too ignorant to understand simple ignition electronics, and resisted (another pun!) my polite efforts. Last thing I heard him say was, "I'm calling a tow truck".

105 Well, it looks like the Muslims are about to take over Europe. Which means that fairly soon, the Europeans themselves will have to flee and become refugees from their own countries.

But where will they go? Where is left?

Why -- the good ol' USA, of course.

But should we take them ALL in? No. Let's not repeat the foolish mistake the Europeans just made. Let's be selective and only allow in those whom we want.

To that end, I suggest these be the priority categories for admitting European refugees in the coming years and decades:

-- Italian women between the ages of 18 and 32, and under 135 pounds;

-- German engineers;

-- British actors;

-- Portuguese soccer players;

-- long-legged Ukrainian picture brides;

-- Swiss bankers;

-- and absolutely no Frenchmen.

Any other suggestions for the Immigration Act of 2018?

You'll need to get them in order.

The disastrous turn-out of the 9-Dash-Line War, which pretty much forfeited most if not all American influence in the S. China Sea, will initiate the 2nd American Civil War.

Meanwhile, seeing America at her weakest point since the 1800s will cause Putin to speed up his plans in forming his "New Russia". Regardless of who wins the resulting Iran-Israel dust-up, Europe will continue to speed into the Islamic Caliphate void.

143 all tu-mor, honey,

Most illegals that come here both send home money AND get benefits. A lot of them live better on the benefits than they could with just wages in their home countries.
A lot of them are skirting the law, so they also don't report under the table work, and such caring things such as work under multiple false SSN that allow the under reporting of wages to qualify for benies.

We cannot have open borders and a welfare state. These illegal workers come to the US and not only is their employment subsidized by legal workers and businesses TO A GREATER AMOUNT than what the illegal workers contribute, the legal workers are experiencing wage suppression in the face of illegal workers undercutting by accepting less wages.

In fact THOSE HORRIBLE CORPORATIONS are not only being subsidized by YOUR TAX MONEY to CHEAT ILLEGALS with lower wages, their use and preference for CHEAP THIRD WORLD LABOR makes legal workers PAY HIGHER TAXES to subsidize CHEAP LABOR to steal their jobs.

So, you should be happy and feel all fuzzy inside because you are making a difference.

Free migration absolutely can not work in a world where comprehensive welfare systems exist. People will simply migrate to the countries with the most generous benefits, and the numbers that do so will sponge them to death in short order. We're experiencing that...

Authoritarianism of any stripe requires a supine population without any means of righting itself. People get used to depending on outside protection, instead of providing it themselves.

And borders. People forget that nations belong to their citizens, and that governments are instituted first and foremost to protect the rights of those citizens, including property. A government that elevates the interests of foreign nationals and international megacorporations above its own citizens is anathema to its very reason for existence and must be reformed or abolished.

Point taken, but mohammedanism also devalues females. A guy raised under a different authoritarian system (Nazi Germany, Soviet Union) probably would have taken care of his wife and daughters before saving his own ass, but as a mohammedan he most likely views his wife and daughters as nothing but holes to stick his dick into, not as real people.

325 Who in politics is currently discussing doing this?

No one but me. Some seem to hint, but none come out and explicitly teach the way that sovereignty, the rules and customs of War, and relations between Nations (International Law dating from the post-French Revolutionary period in the 19th Century) interact and restrict the crypto-communistic partial war treaties of the 20th Century that most people think are the ONLY sources of international law (United Nations treaties & Geneva Convention(s))

Control over a nation's borders are intrinsic to their legitimacy. A question posed by a foreign nation through an invasion of their citizens into another is an act of war. An invasion does not require tanks or artillery. A man with an empty belly, aimed at a frontier by their country or leaders with the company of a handful of others is an attempt to overthrow the legitimacy of a nation's rule.

Mexico has declared war on the US.

By teaching their people that "reconquista" is a thing to be accomplished- in the lessons taught in their goverment schools - the Goverment of Mexico is guilty of violating the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo of 1949 - and in so doing has ensured that legally, a state of War exists yet again between our two nations.

Mexico must be punished.

All her nationals must be returned.

She must be made to pay reparations - I prefer Baja California entire. It must be vacated and given to the US to dispose of. I recommend giving it to Israel.

In case you missed it, you can find American (and some Canadian and Euro) entrepreneurs in many South and Central American countries. But the entrenched culture of corruption that is so common there makes it hard for them to run an honest business.

Free movement of people alone will solve nothing. And if CentroAmerica cleans up its culture of corruption, then their economies will blossom, and their underclass will no longer see a benefit in beating feet for the USA.

369 Bathroom fans don't use much power, and can stay running pretty well constantly. But if they are exhausting air to the outside that you paid to cool, or to heat, as the case may be, it will cost you there. I doubt the fan would transfer much heat to the floor above; if it is moving air, it will cool its own motor.

This falls into the category of "manageable risk". It's likely to be tolerable, but the information you have doesn't rule out serious problems (and, yes, burning the house down is potential).

Unfortunately, you're going to have to dig to accurately asses where you are. Was that bath permitted/inspected construction? Is the fixture being used properly (if it's for two 60-watt bulbs and it's got two 100's, you're at risk). You should inspect and consider quite a bit before you call an electrician.

380 I have a fair bit of experience with exhaust fans, since I work in wellsite shacks that have exhaust fans of the typical chrome bathroom style in the lab section. I leave these fans running 24/7 to exhaust solvent fumes, and they never get hot. Even if the motor stalls, they don't overheat dangerously. They typically use a shaded-pole motor, like what used to be standard in phonographs back in the day. They use about 20 watts, and scarcely more if stalled. Pretty well burn-out proof.

Main spot is directly over the heat lamp. BUT the whole floor was warm an hour ago, now it's down to barely warm in that one spot. And involvement varies, from one spot up to the while floor.

Coothie, it's all permitted & inspected. All the baths have the same heatlamp fixture, that takes 120w bulbs. (Hard to read on the one in my bath & I don't see any more spares)

If permitted and inspected, the fixture (if loaded with appropriate bulbs) should be safe as installed. You can put a timer on the heatlamp for convenience, but the inspectors should assure some level of safety.

It is unlikely that running a fan would give rise to a safety issue -- but people frequently use oversized bulbs in fixtures, and that's dangerous as all hell.

Is your rental unit on a separate electrical utility meter (i.e., a separate bill from the power company)?

If not (and it's likely a very costly effort), then perhaps it should be.

No, it's not on a separate meter. I'll ask the electrician, but I'm pretty sure that would be super costly & involve major requiring. I informed him when he moved in that any significant spikes in water & power would be passed in to him. I am curious what the next bill is going to look like. And back to separate meter, I hope this rental thing is going to not last more than a couple years & it can go back to being a guest bedroom.

Look at WillyJ's link, reproduced below. You can buy this timer at any hardware store or Home Depot. As easy to install as a light switch, only 2 wires.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/qg82kmj

Have the electrician install one of these.

Posted by: Willy J. at September 08, 2015 02:10 AM (HhwmG)

Some of those wellsite shacks, the builders put the exhaust fans on timers, which is entirely reasonable if the fan is in bathroom service, and not entirely unreasonable for a kitchen exhaust fan, either. But it is eminently unreasonable for a fan used to exhaust potentially-toxic vapors from a working space. So my first order of business, upon encountering such a setup, is to replace the timer with a regular switch, or failing that, put both wires on the same terminal of the timer. Because my safety is at stake. And I'm not paying for the heat, either.

408 So the tenant leaving the heatlamp on all the time seems to be the most likely cause of your warm floor - per AOP, the bathroom fans use around 20W of electricity, whereas your heatlamp bulbs are 120W, multiplied by however many bulbs per heatlamp fixture.

But still small potatoes compared to heat lamp, and the fan motor is in the air stream, so it is unlikely to be the source of the perceived heat.

Um, heat lamp + fan though. So the fan motor may not be getting hot because of air flow, but the heat lamp is going to warm the air. Could it be enough that the air is warming up the ductwork for the fan that its bleeding through the floor?

Heat lamp transfers heat to its socket by conduction, and thence to the box. Box gets warm, heats subfloor above by radiation and convection. Fan draws air through itself, may act very slightly to cool heat lamp bulbs and box, too, but the airflow mostly avoids the hot areas where the sockets for the heat lamps are.

A 100 watt light bulb in a regular pot will give off as much upward moving heat as a normal heat lamp. Because most heat lamps are directional and infrared or radiant. If regular heat lamp bulbs caused fires DIY chicken coops across the country would be lighting the skies.

bebes indicated that the fixtures contained two 120-watt heat lamps; small reflector floods, I guess. I believe the fixtures intended for heat lamps are double-walled, with an air space between. I wonder if the heat lamps and fan are on the same or separate switches? Because sometimes circumstances arise when one would like to run the fan, but not the heat.

The cultivation of guilt is the main means by which the Neoliberals have built their power. In their warped worldview, if someone has power (or wealth, or status), they took it from someone else. Shaming people for crimes they are not responsible for, to manipulate their emotional responses is what they do.
This is wholly ironic, since in the Neoliberal worldview, there is no right or wrong, and everything is shades of gray. They feel no guilt, they only abuse it to advance their agenda.

At the end of the article, the author says that the state legislatures will have pass laws implementing this change. Why do they have to do that? According to all the screaming left, the afternoon that the SC decided SSM, suddenly the Texas Constitutional statement that marriage was between a man and a woman was thrown out and Texas was immediately required to fall in love with all these marriages.

It seems to me that if SC decides that the government is not allowed to simply suck up the dues for the unions, that would be it and any laws that allow that within the US would be similarly immediately unconstitutional.
