Overnight Open Thread (9-3-2015) – Weekend at Buzzion's Edition

Quote of the Day I

Indeed, a major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it...gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

-- Milton Friedman

Quote of the Day II

I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.

-- Milton Friedman

Quote of the Day III

One of the many reasons people detest Boehner and McConnell is this very same thing: lack of energy. They must have done something to get to their present positions - something rather Machiavellian, I'd imagine. But it certainly doesn't come across in anything that would give people the impression that they will fight for them. They don't just fail to walk the walk, they fail to talk the talk.

Songs About Occupations Vol. III

It's scary how catchy this version is and how well it works.

And a little trivia:

"The girls, bless their little cotton socks, were very young, very inexperienced," Rushent continues, "and while both of them would mature into really good singers, back then they could barely sing their way out of a paper bag. ...Sue must have done about 60 takes of the verse to 'Don't You Want Me', but not once did she complain.

"Towards the end, we were getting so close to what we wanted, and Sue was starting to get a bit fatigued and pissed off, at which point the door to the studio opened and my four-year-old son James - who's now the lead singer with Does It Offend You, Yeah? - walked in stark-bollock naked except for a pair of green Wellington boots with frog faces on the toes and went, 'Allo!' Sue just cracked up, it broke the ice, and the next take we got the one missing line I was after: 'I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true.' So, thank you, James. He was a producer even back then."

VDH: How Illegal Immigration Finally Turned Off the Public

It is still common to find at immigration rallies thousands of Mexican flags, with far fewer - if any - American flags. Illegal aliens do not just root for visiting Mexican sports teams, but go the extra mile of booing the American opposition.

The message is incoherent: "I will salute the country that drove me out but less so the one that welcomed me in." In fact, the entire narrative of illegal immigration has become unhinged. The vocabulary of protest is never aimed against the nation that forced them out, only against the one that most generously welcomed them in.

Nowhere is this disconnect more evident than in the university, where two antitheses are promulgated. Even as the various Chicano and Ethnic Studies departments indoctrinate students with the supposedly sinister history of the United States, they simultaneously champion the rights of the illegal aliens to enter, reside, and stay in the odious country they have just damned. The message makes little sense. Millions of Americans have finally caught on to the incoherence, and feel that ingratitude is among the worst of all sins.

Does The Hispanic Vote Even Matter For the GOP?

When you look at their marginal effects on election outcomes, the answer seems to be no.

First, note the limited electoral impact of Hispanic voters. All other things being equal, Republicans would have to fall to 8 percent of the Hispanic vote before another state flips to the Democrats (they would lose the popular vote by almost 10 points in this scenario). For all the talk of Texas potentially voting Democrat, that doesn't happen until Republicans drop to 5 percent of the Hispanic vote.

On the other hand, Republicans would have to win 49 percent of the Hispanic vote to win the popular vote (with other vote shares and turnout rates being equal to 2012), but they would still lose the Electoral College, 289-249. Republicans would have to improve to 63 percent of the Hispanic vote before they would win the Electoral College. This is, incidentally, similar to findings from FiveThirtyEight in 2013.

Who Needs A Wall When You Have Obamanomics

In 2012, 5.9 million unauthorized immigrants from Mexico lived in the U.S., down about 1 million from 2007. Despite the drop, Mexicans still make up a slight majority (52% in 2012) of unauthorized immigrants. At the same time, unauthorized immigration overall has leveled off in recent years. As a result, net migration from Mexico likely reached zero in 2010, and since then more Mexicans have left the U.S. than have arrived.

FBI Explains Why a Southwest Airlines Flight Was Diverted and 6 Passengers Arrested in Amarillo

The six, said to be members of a San Diego area soccer team, were subsequently arrested and charged with "interference with a flight crew and abetting."

Basically, according to Hendricks per Southwest, the passengers -Khalid Yohana, 19; Wasim Imad Shaker, 23; Essa Solaqa, 20; Ghazwan Assad Shaba, 21; Jonathan Khalid Petras, 20; and Saiman Hermez, 19- were refusing orders from the flight attendants, challenging their authority and being mean to other passengers.

..."They accused the attendants of being racist" and called the second flight attendant a "pig" as she walked away. The passengers then told a third flight attendant "that they could do whatever they wanted to because they bought a ticket."

Hey come on they bought tickets so it's not like Earth laws even apply anymore.

Hero Braves Dangerous Apartment Complex Fire To Rescue Rack of Ribs, Also Some People; The Ribs Are Okay

A Fresno, California, man is being hailed a hero online after confronting a potentially deadly apartment complex fire to save his wife, child - and his rack of ribs.

In an interview with KPMH Fox 26 News right after the daring rescue, Robert Wright said he was barbecuing a rack of ribs at 3 A.M. - a completely normal thing to do - when he saw flames coming out of the window of the apartment next door.

"Only thing I think first man, 'make sure them ribs is right' and I ran in and got my family man, and brung everybody out safely," Wright said in the interview.

His priorities might not seem to check out at first but, as Wright said, "I thought about my ribs like, I ain't gonna' let my ribs burn and stuff 'cause I take pride in what I do man, it's like three o'clock in the morning and I was hungry."

Well, I got to go shoot my new-to-me Mausers today. Turns out they kick like mules - I have a nice big red bruise on my shoulder.

The guy next to me was firing a AR-15 with Tulammo. Very, very loud, and the ammo seems to have been a mistake: his gun eventually started refusing to feed and finally jammed shut. Turned out that I knew more about ARs than he did and could at least give him a clue as to (clean the gun, use different ammo!) and could steer him towards a couple places that sold cleaning supplies and to a gunsmith that might be able to unstick the bolt.

OK, have you heard about the 17 yr old boy being charged with sexual
exploitation of a minor. Who's the minor? Himself, along with his
girlfriend.

He and the girlfriend were doing the nasty and sent
naked pics of themselves to each other. He can legally have sex with
her, just can't legally possess nude pics. That is, he can legally see
her naked in person, just can't have a picture of her. Genius.

And he also can't have nude pictures of himself.

And, under NC law he can be charged as an adult in this, exploiting his
own self, who is also a minor for the purposes of the trial. So the law
considers him both an adult and a minor at the same time.

How's that for Kafkaesque tyranny?

I happened, quite by accident, across a couple of members of the local falconry community. One of those things you would never believe even existed if you had not stumbled into it.

Their birds are very happy to take snakes, but they just can't find snakes often enough. Also, in Commiefornia, if your falcon picks off a protected species of snake (there are more than a few, and the birds do not discriminate), and said predation comes to the attention of the authorities, you're boned.

116 8 foot female king cobra on the loose around Orlando FL. area. Good luck Disneyworld visitors. That is one bad ass snake.

Nah. King cobras are pussycats who just want to be left alone. Now Russell's vipers (the "speckled band" in the Conan Doyle story of the same name), there's some serious bad ass snakes.

My wife and I were at a snake farm in Thailand where the Thais bare-handed took out one cobra after another from the surrounding baskets, and without a thought or a glance dropped them on the ground right next to their bare feet. The cobras beat whatever vestigial feet (scutae?) they had to get away from the guys (coming toward us, I might add). The Thais were totally unconcerned.

Then they broke out a Russell's viper - with a long pair of tongs. Even while one guy spoke to the audience, he and his protector standing next to him never took their eyes off that bastard, which sat coiled and hissing menacingly, and periodically made a move toward them, only to be restrained with a hook pinning it to the ground.

The contrast in how the Thais treated the two couldn't have been more stark.

I'm with you. We were sitting in bleachers overlooking a ring with a 4" high curb around it. One of the cobras made it to the curb - and thus about 6' from the nearest spectators, who understandably were getting alarmed - when the one of the Thais noticed it and dragged it back - by the tail.

They obviously had no fear whatever of the cobras. The Russell's viper, on the other hand, was another story. So they weren't just foolhardy.

185 "And from what I've read about SF and their stinky problem, having a few
slit trenches and shit-burning latrines maybe what SF needs."

Some of the SF stink is from public elimination on the streets, but a lot of it is due to underinvestment in the sewers. The place has the problem that most of municipal Commiefornia does, which is the public sector pension time bomb eating the bulk of the general fund revenues.

So you get situations like bond measures to patch potholes on the streets, which are in sight of the public. And gross neglect of the things underneath the streets.

I figure that a fair part of SF has been undermined (literally) by leakage off of the storm and sanitary sewer mains. When the Big One finally shows up, a lot of the city aboveground will collapse into the resulting voids.

Oh, and sewer gases burn and explode. Most of the damage in the '06 quake was due to fire, not ground movement.

Likely.

I have seen the interior of a few SF Victorian homes with original toilets, and they were often the sort with a big tank up near the ceiling to get enough of a hydraulic head to clear the bowl.

Replace that with a small "low flow" tank just above floor level, well...

I ran across an interesting juxtaposition the other day.

1. Pope Pius XII comments to the Roman people on June 6 1944- "Whew, thank goodness the belligerents spared all our beautiful buildings."

2. Ike Order of the Day on June 6, 1944- "Our cause is just and we will prevail. The enemy is well prepared and will fight viciously. Do your duty."

But when I look at the men and women of that era, and I look around today, it makes me really sad.
I do hold my head up. It's the others around me who don't believe as I do. My generation failed to pass on something very precious. Some still believe, many on this blog do care. But there are many of my fellow countrymen who do not and could not care less.

It's weird, but the passing of WWII vets hits me hard - maybe it's that I sense/see what weft cut is talking about - that typically, mankind does *not* learn through experience. At least inter-generationally.

Just recently another one, a friend's father, he was a Navy Corpseman with the 5th Div. at Iwo. Not a scratch - and casualty rate for his position on Iwo was in the range of 90%, I believe. Also one of the first ashore for Occupation duty, great story about having to use a kid talking over a loudspeaker to coax people out into the open - they were afraid of the depredations the Americans would commit against them.

Became a dentist, popular and respected in his small town, never talked about the war (think he finally went to a reunion, the 50th in 1995).

My dad was in Field Artillery (VI Corps counterbattery) and as such was part of the efforts to neutralize Anzio Annie, the collective name for the German's two big rail guns that wreaked such havoc on the beachhead. That is the core of the story I am putting into novel form. Had to put in some Muldoonery, but mostly playing it straight.

I agree with Old Blue and others above about current generations having no connection to the whole amazing story of the generation that went off to Europe to save us all from ruin. My adult kids have next to no interest in my project.

363 Just from the way the cookie crumbled, most of the stories I heard were from the Pacific. There one guy who saw some serious shit in Europe, but he was one of them that didn't talk much. The ones that talked that I was able to hear were all in the Pacific.

Ol' Red's tales of the horror of Okinawa could leave you speechless. Killing up close and personal, and burning the enemy out of caves, and the sights, sounds, and smells of all that.

He claimed, "God help me, I loved killin' 'em", but one that you could tell was eating him alive was having to kill women and children. The Japanese used little boys, send women out loaded with explosives. If you showed mercy, you were dead. And he would talk of having to mow down those young boys and "geisha girls". You could see the pain in his eyes.

His way of coping was to talk about it, long and hard.

373 According to Red, one tale the Japanese told was that American Marines required you to kill your parents and/or grandparents to be initiated. This was to make the rank and file hate the Marines guts, having to do with their ancestor worship concept. IOW, Marines were the worst sort of demons possible.

It had the intended effect, but also had an unintended side-effect. It made them scared shitless of a Marine. He said that all they would have to do to get prisoners they'd taken to shut up and do whatever they were ordered to do was tell them they were going to bring in a Marine and let him work them over. He said you could see the fear in their eyes.

A childhood friend (local cop now) and I used to play the usual "army" stuff as kids, and when at his house would sometimes use the "toy" in his garage - a roughly-cut square of thin metal ..... with a swastika on green camo-ish backround. It was cut by bayonet from the tail of an ME-109 his father had shot down - with the MG on his Sherman. His dad was actually "famous" for another thing, going off-road and thereby cutting off a German unit, but downing an a/c of course was a rarity in itself.

My friend still has it - but now carefully wrapped and protected. Back then? Like so much other WWII treasure, it was just stuck in between the studs inside an unfinished suburban garage, when the 10-yr olds weren't playing withit .....

401 That "Dark Side of the Rainbow" video, posted at #253, showcasing the weird synchronicity between Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon album and the 1939 The Wizard of Oz was interesting. It also made me aware of, well, an artistic mistake made in the movie. There's no mention made of this in the video, but here it is...

In the early scenes at the farm, the farmhand played by Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow) hits his hand with a hammer while working on the wagon.

It really should've been the farmhand played by Jack Carter (The Tin Woodsman). See, in the books, The Tin Woodsman... who had a name, by the way; Nick Chopper... was once a normal man. But he had a cursed axe. One by one, it cut off his limbs (and eventually his torso, too, but I'm not exactly sure how the logistics of that work out) and eventually he ended up with his entire body replaced by a tin construct.

So, yeah... that's the guy who should've hit his hand with the hammer in the movie.

As I said, I could well be wrong - apparently am - about suicide cliffs in Okinawa. For whatever reason, the ones in Saipan are more famous (there's some disturbing film footage of US troops trying to coax people literally off the ledge, and some jumping).

The nuke article. OK. Meh. I suppose. Hate to be critical, it's aimed at a broad audience. But nothing really there. He says we shouldn't just dust off Cold War ideas, then counsels we "re-learn" some Cold War basics like escalation dominance (a little incoherence creeps in).

As is usually the case with nukes, there's some implicit - and false - framework that they change everything, something one sees in most stuff lacking the practical sense of Kissinger and Kahn's approach. It still comes down to will, basic credibility, seriousness, of both leadership and country. These are gone poof bye-bye sayonara, for now. And nothing indicates the US will be any more serious than it was when it melted down over two historically minor conflicts in which we achieved our basic objectives, just a few years back.

The irony is that today's disconnect between forces and strategy gaps in the opposite direction - for the sort of operations that the public/elites would plausibly undertake, any more, we have far larger forces than needed. Previously, starting under Clinton, we had a gap between our global commitments and strategy and our slowly-then-rapidly declining assets.

The question any GOP candidate claiming to plan on restoring or expanding US military power needs to be asked is - "why?". The minority supporting any sensible or realistic national security strategy is now more a fringe than the minoritybacking sensible economic policies, or freedom, or rule of law.

412 "Lessee. Airline deregulation. Natural gas deregulation. Didn't both of those also happen during Carter? Think so."

Part of natgas deregulation was due to ERDA research.

ERDA were saying with meticulous research that the United States had hundreds of years worth of natural gas available, whereas Carter was saying it would all be played out by the early 1980s. (Game, set, and match to ERDA.)

Carter wanted to snuff out ERDA. Lese-majeste! Intolerable!

So a deal was cut whereby ERDA would be rolled into and subsumed into the new Dept. of Energy, and part of the political price tag was signing on to a relatively free market in natgas. Carter figured he couldn't lose. After all, there would be only another five years or or worth of supply. Wasn't there? Oops.

While there may have been no breweries operating during Prohibition, there was plenty of home brewing and home cooking going on.

Diaries kept by one of my paternal great grandfathers had a frequent entry -- "cooked" -- during that period, which my grandmother told us referred to him running their home still.

Decades later, said still was carried off the dock on which it had been stored by Lake Superior's winter storms and ice and lost forever. Whenever we'd take a boat in the vicinity, my father urged us to keep an eye out for the still on the rocky lake bottom, something made possible by the clear waters of the lake.

478 Someone tell Ace: the story he highlighted a few days ago about the Indian village which ordered two girls to be raped as punishment for their brother eloping with a woman from a different caste -- turns out to be likely false:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34111906

A reporter goes to the village, where he can't find anyone who says such an order was ever given. And furthermore, he discovers that Amnesty International, who were the ones who publicized the outrage, had themselves never visited the village, and were relying on a claim filed by one of the girls -- a claim which is denied by everyone in the village.

They could all be lying, but things now look a little suspicious.

Furthermore, it's not entirely clear whether their brother eloped with the higher-caste woman, or kidnapped her, or tricked her into essentially being date-raped, or what; all very murky. The reporter interviews the woman herself who claims she barely even knew the guy and that he kidnapped her. But the reporter also suspects she may be pressured to say this by her relatives.

The whole thing appears to be a big ugly unclear dispute between two families, that has gotten blown way out of proportion and become an international incident based on no real hard evidence.

Whatever happened between the brother and the other woman, the reporter found zero evidence of the village council voting to rape the sisters. It could well be that the rape vote tale was concocted as part of the argument between the families, as a way for the brother's family to make the other family look like villains.

Maybe there was a vote, maybe not -- but at this stage I wouldn't be getting all outraged unless there is some clarity.

The whole thing reminds me of the Tawana Brawley incident -- a girl who made up a story about a rape simply as a cover story to explain to her mom why she stayed out past bedtime -- and the whole thing exploded absurdly into a national crisis.

48 century rule on this one.

I haven't seen any call for the US to take in refugees. (I read two German papers every day and I talk about this with German friends on FB). It isn't a thing and it should be.

Europe should be blaming Obama.

The refugees are not economic migrants like the ones crossing our southern border. They are fleeing for their lives from areas that we have fucked up.

We decapitated Libya and did nothing to restore stability. We drew an impotent red line in Syria and left a vacuum for ISIS to fill. We abandoned Iraq to fulfill a campaign promise.

And as Ace keeps pointing out, we let ISIS mass in the open and don't kill them. We make targeted strikes against leaders, but they're having freaking parades. With total air domination we could be killing them dead where we need to.

People are dying in refrigerated trucks, people are drowning in overfilled boats. The world finally noticed when a photogenic three year old washed up on a beach.

526 OK, so, Vic fooled me into going and reading the actual content. I hate when that happens, except for the barefoot Ziegfeld girls. That wasn't so bad.

Fox does indeed report "pressure" on the US to take in more Syrians, but no European leaders or agencies are quoted. The actual pressure comes only from the UN's refugee commissioner, and from within the administration itself. Fox either undertook to misrepresent, or just got media-managed by a real boss.

They have this special category of "parole." The only way I'd stand still for mass migration would be under true parole conditions. There are some abandoned former cattle towns in Wyoming and Montana that would probably look like paradise on Earth to a desert dweller. Arrange credit for building materials, cut down L.A.'s water quota a little, establish a security perimeter, and let them have at it. Just don't transplant them hot into the middle of regular towns and cities.

That's about as humanitarian as I get. Keep people from mass murder? Fine. Special immigration status, I don't think so.

Germany and Europe are no longer recognizable.
Are the longings for freedom and prosperity only valid for the native born? In the asylum debate there are concrete contradictions."

There have been some problems with "right wing" extremists, some arson at asylum camps and such. For the most part Germany is trying to be a gracious host and live up to its ideals.

585 Since this is an old thread. Does anyone know about paint?
I bought some paint to re-do the bathroom. It's supposed to be a pale grey. Had to re-do some texture, etc. Started painting and the shit looks purple on the wall.

So, I painted a small corner shelf with the same color. The colors look totally different on smooth wood and the texture in the same corner.

Today, I have to go out and get paint samples to find the right color. Anyone know what causes this?

Original color was white. Second coat would make it worse. It looks okay in the dark with a night light on, during the day it's a violet color.

Guessing - the textured surface causes tiny shadows which overall darkens the color.
Kind of how the same color dye will look different on different fabrics.
Based on that theory, go for lighter shade than you would think, and probably something low-shine / matte.

Infidel, having worked with fabrics and paint colors in room design for a few years, please bear in mind that grays can be all over the color spectrum.

Green undertones, blue undertones, pinkish or purplish undertones. Look at the chip samples carefully and in good (natural) light. Preferably midday light. Even morning light or late afternoon light can make colors appear to be a little different.

Same thing goes for tans and beiges, by the way. I've had many a customer say, "This will be fine, it's beige." Get a recliner in their house, call me and say, "My God, It's GREEN!"

Hope this helps.

575Jerry Rivers. Defending Bush speaking Spanish and says almost 100 percent of second gen wetbacks speak only English.

That is the biggest crock of BS ever. I go to any store and I can see young spanish speaking couples talking to the little children in SPANISH, not English. The children may speak both languages, but not english only.

Hell, where I live, I've seen Asian parents speaking to their kids in Spanish.

Mindful, though, most children in the city proper have a black father (when one is around) and a hispanic mother,
