Hugenormous: Trump, Carson Tied for First in Iowa at 23%; Fiorina in Third at 10%

Well we seem to have a tiny little rebellion against the Establishment/political class on our hands.

This is also the first poll in forever that doesn't have Trump in the lead. Well, he's in the lead, but in a tie.

The rest of the field:

Carly Fiorina 10%, Ted Cruz 9%, Scott Walker 7%, Jeb Bush 5%

John Kasich, Marco Rubio 4%, Rand Paul 3%, Mike Huckabee,Rick Santorum 2%

Oh but CNN is still employing an algorithm which will most likely keep Mick Huckabee in and kick Carly Fiorina out.

Monmouth University's press release about the poll can be seen here.

Last I saw on Carson on immigration is that he's wavered back and forth on Secure the Border/Path to Citizenship. He doesn't seem to have a solid policy on it yet, even at this stage. Which leads me to believe he's being a little GOPish there.

Last I saw on his 2A stance was that people in cities shouldn't have semi-automatic weapons or some such silly bullshit. Again, vague, poorly considered stances on another key issue.

68 1. Walker did not "advocate" for a wall on the Canadian border, which anybody with two functioning brains cells could tell by actually listening to the words that came out of his mouth on MtP yesterday. Saying he dis is outright lying, which is why the media say he did. Why people who ought to know better on this board keep repeating that lie is...interesting.

2. It is in the MSM/DNC interest to keep promoting political novices instead of the overall very-deep field of legitimate candidates. For one thing, it is entertaining and this is 31 August, 15 months before the election and "entertaining" always wins over "serious." For another, the longer it takes for a legitimate candidate to gain significant support, the easier it is for the guy with the most money (Bush) who the MSM/DNC want to be the nominee to actually be the nominee.

Here is a hypothesis:

Most people didn't really support Carson because they didn't think he could actually win (me included). He seems great on the issues, but is way too soft-spoken to be good in politics--or so it is thought.

Perhaps people are now realizing that he actually *could* win, and we could see an overton window type shift in support of him?

I mean, this hypothesis is probably wrong, but a guy can hope, right?

Real issue for whom?

If your concern is Islamic radicalism and the potential for "plants" in this country, Mexico isn't where you focus your attention, visa overstays and states bordering Ontario and Quebec are. Because that's how Muslim immigrants come into this country, through the airport and from Canada.

Over half of illegals in this country are not Mexicans. 40% are visa overstays.

It was the politic thing to say, its the kind of thing politicians say all day long to all sorts of lunatics to make them go away and seem polite, and is ignored by the press until this sort of time. It was a pretty miniscule and minor flub, if that.

He didn't take the opportunity to make it a better point for himself, which is what Trump and Fiorina do, and that was his failing.

"If you're wearing something that says 'Come and fu*k me,' you'd better be good on your feet ... I don't think I'm saying anything controversial am I ?"

No Chrissy its not. No woman is responsible or to blame for being raped, but some are incredibly unwise in how they behave and dress. Its always wrong to attack some woman or molest her unwanted but if you're going to dress or act like you want it to happen, you clearly weren't thinking this through very well.

Like that movie The Accused. She was acting trashy and dressed kinda slutty and coming on to the guys. So they came on. They should have stopped when she didn't like it but she was getting the reaction her behavior clearly advertised she wanted.

Some women seem to want to be able to act and look any way they want without consequence or reasonable response like those idiotic feminists running around topless then demanding nobody look at their tits.

Voters have a marked preference for governors being elected President (baseline here being from Reagan forward).

There is at least strong anecdata that GOP primary voters prefer someone with executive experience as the Presidential candidate (see McCain exception).

In 2012 Rick Perry was Teh Hotness.

In 2016 Scott Walker was Teh Hotness.

So why was it in 2012 and now in 2016 that the person who should be sprinting out of the gate is shooting himself in the dick repeatedly?

My theoryish thingy is that the skills needed to be elected governor do not necessarily translate to a national level and that there really isn't a finishing school to learn how to do that.

As I said, this is just the inkling of a thought and I can't tell if something is there or not. I found it interesting though.

226 Iowa is a strange Caucus where it's less about free media and more about the grunt work of organizing.

That's usually why social conservatives do well in that contest, they tend to be a lot more dedicated.

Not sure what sort of effort Carson and Trump have in the state, but I could easily see Trump's poll support not translating into votes in the Caucus at all unless he really wants to make a large investment or camp out there. I also don't see his social liberalism playing well there.

I personally think the GOP should bypass it altogether as it ends up being a headache more than anything

277 I honestly like the idea of advocating for a wall on both borders because it does take the heat off of "we're trying to keep the brown people out".

The actual cost of the walls compared to what we lose from illegal immigration is pennies on the dollar.

If we have to build both walls to get any wall, I can make that compromise.

But yea, it's silly in the sense that 99% of the problem is South of the Border. But the racism charge is why we don't have a wall, so taking that off the table might actually get it built.

Democrats need 99% black support and huge turnout to win. That was what put Obama in the White House more than Hispanics or anything else.

330 Just a few comments.

1) Scott Walker is the only R candidate in the field that has proven to have the mettle to do conservative things, at every job he's had. Regardless of the blowback, or what special interest gets angry, he will do what he says, and that is rare. That said, he is running a poorly focused campaign of reacting, instead of focusing on his issues and attacking. Too bad.

b) King Putt is just trolling us with the "renaming" of Denali. Everyone pretty much knows both names to that mountain, thanks to GMC. He's just taking the white mans name off of it to get a reaction from the usual suspects, and I'm sure it will work. The proper reaction would be to simply put it on a list of thing to be undone by the next president.

III) The Establishment GOP is not a conservative party, and never has been. Every blogger here that I can recall has pointed out how the party needs conservatives, but despises them nonetheless. Seeing not one, not two, but THREE outsiders leading the pack in Iowa should be a smack from the cluebat, but they will insist that this is just "silly season", and the stupid rubes will come around as we near the election, because (wave your red foam finger now) "you're not going to let them(pretend that this is italicized) win, are you?" Guess they'll have to wait for next Nov. to get their answer.

P.S. If the war on women folk really wanted to poke an issue, they'd point out that Fiorina is being treated unfairly, and accuse the GOP of sexism. They just can't a sister out if she's an unperson from the wrong party.

do what he says, and that is rare. That said, he is running a poorly
focused campaign of reacting, instead of focusing on his issues and
attacking."

I'd say that almost all of this is exactly right.

I do think that he bought into the Trump hype too much and tried to get out ahead of it instead of staying on-message as he did in the first debate and immediately after. People on the right complain constantly about how the MSM/DNC want to get our best candidates into traps, yet we "jump" when they say "jump" every time the push forward people or ideas that are explicitly designed to get our candidates into traps.

People were all buying right into the "Walker is boring" meme the MSM/DNC were pushing right after the debate and I think he mistakenly fell into that trap.

The stuff he's done with the Obamacare repeal/replace plan is the best of any of them, and his speech/policy announcement on foreign policy at the Citadel was similarly as strong. I hope he sticks to this kind of substantive approach and stays out of the Trump weeds going forward.

A Court just declared that illegals DO have 2nd Amendment Rights to carry arms...

Because they have all the rest of the Rights...

And it was the Courts who declared Dual Citizenship OK... even though the Law said, and still says, you give up your other citizenship when you become a US Citizen... (even the oath still says that)...

And it was the COURTs who said Illegals get the same State benefits (such as Schools) as Citizens get... even with laws that said otherwise...

The Courts have been making immigration LAW, in direct contravention of the Constitution for generations....

500 I find the whole notion of a Northern Wall preposterous. The obvious difference is that there isn't much difference in the economies of Canada and the US. Another obvious difference, there isn't a tail attached to Canada comprised of third world countries with so many trying to get out.

Finally, have you seen where that border is? It's fricking freezing half the year, impassable without a vehicle most of the year. Checkpoints at the roads is plenty enough for 95% of the North. Smugglers of Labatt's Light will always find a way to deliver, given the demand, wut?

The smartest thing about it is that it means he is a marketing genius... he should be running someone else's campaign, but he's too narcissistic for that. Posted by: prescient11

I just don't buy into that, I don't think politicians go through the meat grinder of running for President and twisting donors arms all because they so love Jeb Bush and want him to win. I doubt if many of these guys have so much as met the guy.

And most of them actually take away Establishment votes. A Graham voter or a Kasich voter is a Jeb voter, so how does it help Jeb?

They run because every politician has a giant ego and they all want to be President. If they have a state that's early in the line up, they have the outside possibility of catching fire, so they take their shot and maybe next time around they get a little closer. Or maybe get on the VP slot and are next in line.

I just don't buy into the big conspiracies, I just see it being a lot of ego.

Hopkins (the University and not Med School) is the source of super special scientific irrefutable "studies" like how "millions" were killed by "Bush's illegal wars" and how gun control actually saves the world everywhere despite every single study done ever. In other words, he's been steeped in Obama style crap most of his career and so, being a smart guy, his moderate stances sound radical in the current atmosphere. It was just a couple of years ago he came out strongly for gun control and has slowly modified that position to be basically no guns in cities. Of course the Black inner city in Baltimore is a free fire zone and don't think he doesn't get pressure from Black Leaders to ban guns because, uh, well, they can't educate or control their base supporters who prefer thug life to selling out to Whitey. Sounds racist but try being White in Baltimore and you'll find out really quickly how strongly the Black populace is indoctrinated into racism against Whites. Northern Virginia has always had a lot of government workers though. I would love to see a comparison of how many more fed government workers are in VA from 2004 (which Bush won easily) and 2012. My guess is you're talking about .1% of the voter base.

The GOP lost VA in 2014 by a whisker to an entrenched, popular incumbent.

I will concede that VA has gone from reliably red to purple, but it's a winnable state for us. I wouldn't mark it down as say Maryland.

Agreed

If a Republican can win Maryland on an anti-tax platform, it has to make even the cynics optimistic.

The GOP has made a lot of dumb mistakes that can explain VA. Cuccinelli was a poor nominee and was something of a freak show with his SoCon views (like bringing back sodomy laws) and then you had the backdrop of the outgoing Republican Governor going to prison. But even then, it came down to a whisker.

It's just not a typical Southern state and it's not in the bag for either party.

What's Roop gonna do when the wheels finally do come off of the Bush bandwagon? Will he pull the sort of strategic realignment that he did in the UK during the early rise of Tony Blair, where he abruptly changed the editorial line at all of the Murdoch papers to pro-Labour?

657 Half of the GOP candidates could disappear from the earth today and the next day nobody would notice. I just wish guys like Christie and Graham and Kasich and Santorum, Huckabee, etc would just go away. Its so frustrating seeing otherwise godly, conservative people go "ooh Huckabee, he sounds Christian" and wanting to vote for him. He's a terrible choice, even if he had a remotely speck-like chance.

Yeah. The old home district was "administered" by Moran's kid and "we don't need no XOM here" Connelly. Amazingly enough, there were as many registered voters as adults.

668 That "algorithm" is a simple rolling average.

Its front-loaded, designed to get name recognition candidates a position above anyone else that's gaining momentum. They started the "average" so early that people like Jeb Bush who is known get a hefty advantage in position despite plunging in the polls.

We're no longer allowed to recognize that some life choices have a high probability of leading to unhappiness.

In fact, it's now the norm to blame this unhappiness on other people for being judgey or hatey.

671 "Cuccinelli was a poor nominee and was something of a freak show with his
SoCon views (like bringing back sodomy laws) and then you had the
backdrop of the outgoing Republican Governor going to prison."

Last time this came up, the sodomy laws question drew an indignant answer that, well, yes, he DID support those laws, but ONLY to try to go after child molesters.

Leaving unanswered the question about Cuccunelli's previous statements about homosexuality being "objectively morally disordered", with no qualifications at all about pedophilia added on.

And yes, McDonnell's self inflicted legal troubles were an obvious problem for the GOP. Though McDonnell basically did briefly on a small scale what Terry McAuliffe had previously done on an industrial scale for decades and continues to do to this day.

674 @657 - amen.

Huckabee's flavor of Christianity smells a lot like the Unitarian Universalists to me.

I would have argued that the 'politician' GOP field needs to reduce to Walker and Cruz in a hurry if we're going to see a real contest, and I'd have thought Carson would be gone by now, and we'd be down to Trump, Fiorina, Walker, and Cruz.

But Walker's underperformed, Carson's picked up some support from somewhere, and the Kasichs and the Pauls and etc sit there sucking their 5% or so from a couple others, I have no idea where this is going.

675 Well, imaginative casting and counting --- i.e., fraud --- helps at the margins too.
Posted by: Margarita DeVille at August 31, 2015 01:24 PM (cN9Sk)

I'm not sure that, despite the good efforts of True The Vote and others, that the 'margin of fraud' is not steadily increasing in the D's favor.

It may already be borderline impossible for anyone but a D to win a Presidential election because the D's can game the system with dead Chicagoans, bussed in Somalis, mail-in ballots and other trickery.

687 Sorry, have not had time to read but a few comments. Check out Sundance on conservativetreehouse for the strategy of the GOPe and CofC in concert and over the last few years. Their plan was carefully to develop new GOP rules so their boy Yeb could win the nom with just a small majority of the votes -- fracture the rest by supporting beaucoup number of Repubs running. Now that Yeb does not appear capable of even that small, small amount, "they" are developing a new strategy. Watch. All of a sudden lots of funds go his way and lots of media attention saying "Ben, what a nice guy". the puyrpose -- Carson will take votes away from Trump -- the only one capable of taking down GOPe-CofC. Take a look at Carson's anti-gun positions; his position on illegals; his position on taxes (why do these Af-Am Christians want everyone to tithe?); etc. When one looks closely, he is not exactly a nominee to thrill over, much less his lack of experience. And yet, he appears like a nice guy. Maybe a place in the next Admin would be a good place for him -- Surgeon Gen?

688 There are a lot of pundits comparing Trump to one historic politician or another, often without much in the way of evidence. The most thought provoking one I've read noted that as with Perot in ;92, Trump's motivation may largely be personal enmity towards the Bush family. It seems that Trump threw the best fundraiser ever! for Jeb when he was governor. Trump's motive was to help grease the skids for a management contract for a casino hotel on one of the Indian owned parcels in Florida. Trump has been teed off ever since that didn't happen.

689 Intellectual Froglegs has a great video on Trumpmania, which really lays out why people are Trumpified. (For lack of better verbiage.)

The hell of it is...is that the DC morons don't get it and never will. The punditocracy keeps giving the oligarchy advice on what the they can do to 'mend fences'.

Do they really think we would believe anything they say at this point?

I may never trust the GOP again, and that is really a sad state of affairs. I left the Democrats for the same reason.

Disclosure: I'm a self-avowed Carson supporter.

Query: When in your adult lifetime have you seen a leading Presidential candidate (e.g. Ben Carson), criticize a national media outlet (i.e. CNN), for not allowing another impressive Presidential candidate (i.e. Carly Fiornina), for not being allowed to participate in national debates?

Answer: Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? ...
