Every presidential candidate's doppelgänger, according to face recognition software. Haha, Lindsey Graham only scored a 82 on the masculinity measurement. That's still too high though.

F-35 vs A-10

Something tells me that the USAF wouldn't be advertising this unless it's rigged. The F-35 vs the A-10, head-to-head in close air support. Not happening until 2018 though.

Interesting Ship Name Choice

Hmmmm. Japan launches latest helicopter carrier. Its name? The Kaga.

The 24,000-ton Kaga (DDH-184) - built by ship builder Japan Marine United - bears the same name as the World War II Imperial Japanese Navy carrier Kaga that was part of Pearl Harbor attack and was sunk in the Battle Midway.

Lesbians

Not a surprising finding. Study finds women turn to lesbians due to lack of boyfriends.

The study also discovered that less attractive women are more likely to become lesbians.

Air Force News

Heh. Airmen create collages as they envision their future with creative arts.

Auditory Adrenaline

Mass Shootings

I'm still more afraid of being killed by a dumb ass driver while commuting than guns. WaPo says we're averaging 1 mass shooting a day. Ironically anti-gun folks don't like this analysis because it includes gang shootings. I'd be curious to see if they could pull up data on car crashes that had 4 or more victims. Would these be defined then as mass car accidents with breathless coverage about how we need to restrict access to motor vehicles?

Wait Times

This stuff looks delicious but would you freakin' stand in line for 3 hours for it? Freaky new ice cream people wait 3 hours for. This being NYC, I'm surprised it hasn't already been banned.

38 There's one item that the comparison between the F-35 and the A-10 almost certainly won't touch. And ironically, it's what was used to prohibit the F-22 from carrying out any close air support missions. The F-22's price tag was used to justify blocking the use of it against ground targets, as it would make the very expensive plane vulnerable to surface AAA.

The F-35 should probably also be in the same boat. But the issue will be ignored. And we won't hear a word about the cost of replacing an F-35 vs the cost of replacing an A-10.

100 I've been watching old game shows on Buzz or Buzzer TV as well. Suprisingly entertaining. Match Game 78 is my favorite. I love how most of the panel give just about zero fucks. No one takes it seriously except maybe a few of the contestants. I think Richard Dawson was doing his taxes on the last episode I watched. Just phoning it in and yet everyone always picks him. It's wondrous.

The amount of hours of maintenance you have to do to fly them.

F-22 takes over 30 hours per flight hour... older aircraft half of that... A-10 takes about 10 minutes...

I know I'd rather have an A-10 flying above me, than an F-35 which is sitting in the hanger...

England had a fair number. So did the Low Countries. These were trading nations so any king with a brain wouldn't kill the golden-egg laying geese.

Elsewhere small-government was taken for granted by the peasants - they had a local baron, who didn't give much of a shit about the peasants, and let them be if they just paid taxes and STFU.

The problems arose when you got centralising, warmongering despots like Edward Longshanks and (worse) Edward III, or that pharaoh Louis XIV in France.

First we need a new law - entering the country by passing imigrations and customs is a felony punsihable by up to five years hard labor.

There. Just cut the labor cost on building that wall by 80% (the remaining 20% are for security guards - prisoners can scrounge their own food on their off hours).

Cost of wall should be down to $4B.

If we use local materials to build the wall (why not, labor cost is low), we can probably bring the cost down to $1B.

Ben Affleck played a douche who thinks he's much smarter than he is and that the rules don't apply to him... which is not much of a stretch for him.

It should have been a serial. There's a scene with a couple rednecks in the last third which has nothing to do with the plot. You know Chekhov's rifle? Well, that rifle was fired through a window, and the bullet whizzed past another window.

Otherwise pretty good.

If you're into social drama / suspense: "The Gift" was much tighter-plotted. Hitchcock would have been proud.

The only jets that can be put on those decks are the elderly and out of production Harrier (killer of more pilots than any other modern jet) or the F-35 B-variant, which isn't much of a jet.

Not least in combat radius with a full weapons loadout.

If you need to run long range interceptor missions, the short legs and slow stumpy gait of the F-35B are a problem. Can't go far. Takes a while to get there. Can't stay there for long.

Long range deep strike, worse yet. You'll need tankers. But the only tankers that will fly off of any of those mini-carriers and which can fuel an F-35B in flight is another F-35B, or an Osprey tiltrotor. Neither of which lug much gas. And either of which are going to make the deck operations cycle horrifically complicated.

There's a place for helicopter carriers, an important one, not least with regard to hunting subs. Ultraquiet small subs being probably THE maritime weapon of choice in the coming Pacific wars.

336 So I saw "Gone Girl" last night - Ben Affleck played a douche who thinks he's much smarter than he is and that the rules don't apply to him... which is not much of a stretch for him.

Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at August 28, 2015 11:11 PM

I liked Gone Girl, despite it being the sort of thing that usually disinterests me. That couple who robbed Amy did serve the purpose of "forcing" her to change plans and exploit Doogie Howser. However, I found them a frustrating addition, as they were a massive missed opportunity, story wise. Thefilm could have had a MUCH stronger ending (despite it not being in the book), by having those two show up at the end... Nothing said... just bam... out of the blue... there they are on the scene. They were a massive loose end to her alibi and they could have figured out who she was after the wide publicity of her "return" on TV. Blackmail, baby... and suddenly the situation gets more complicated. Roll credits. That's my take, anyway.

407 "The Hoover Institute is a part of Stanford University, and Hoover was an Alumnus."

There are genuine conservatives at the Institution, most notably Thomas Sowell.

As for Hoover himself, well, the New Deal began on his watch, not FDR's. FDR merely put a name to it and spent more. From 1929 to 1932, federal spending rocketed enormously with "pump-priming" efforts called for by Hoover. It didn't work.

Oh, and Hoover Tower is one of the ugliest bits of architecture in the SF Bay Area. Shudders. Hopefully it will fall over when the Big One hits.

Weft's handy-dandy copy n' paste guide

The current software on AoSHQ doesn't like some of the text characters from other encodings. For example, Smart quotes ( the curved quotation marks ), and curved apostrophes get rejected. The angle brackets and the invisible Unicode character before twitter's @addresses get bounced as well.

Try posting without any special characters like those, and as always, don't copy and paste from your browser to the comment box here.

*You need to paste to a plain text editor first, edit out the special characters like the smart quotes/ apostrophes, and then copy and paste to the comment box.*

497 I noticed a contradiction in "Casablanca."

In the early parts Rick as a "Loyalist" in the Spanish Civil War. Later he was part of those fighting the "fascists."

Victor Lazlo was a Commie.
Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at August 28, 2015 10:49 PM (1ijHg)

The Abraham Lincoln Brigade (American Volunteers for the Republic) in the Spanish Civil War were not default communists. Lots of them were just kids who wanted to make a difference.
There had been a ban on US citizens fighting for either side in the Civil war, and being a combatant was supposed to keep you from being let back in the country. My Dad, who grew up in Tacoma said he knew a couple, and he thought they might have neglected to state where they had been for the previous couple of years.

From what I remember, sounds like Rick got over the French border and had to skedadle to Casablanca later. Rick not liking the communists would have come from their general lack of competence, lapdog devotion to Moscow, their tendency to base decisions on political instead of practical understandings, and their dog-in-a-manger approach to the world and its possibilities. That and losing a bastard of a war in spite of having most of the advantage at the beginning.

Oh, and Lazlo was Ilsa's husband. I would have hated him just for that alone.

535 Actually, like the Nationalist's JONS coalition, the Republicans were also a broad array of political movements bound together. They included Catalan industrialists, Anarchists and labor union movements, Basque separatists, various anti-fascist movements, and the Communists backed by the Comintern.

As the war ground on the Fascist JONS became more and more under the sway of the Army and Franco, and so the Republican forces, by losing the Basque regions and Catalonian territory, became more reliant and more influenced by the Communists who could still get supplies and funding from Moscow and from overseas when the British and French had cut them off from credit and suppliers.

570 Popular sentiments aside, the A-10 was designed for battlefield air interdiction, not CAS, and is not an ideal CAS platform. It's greatest strength is that its pilot focus almost exclusively on the CAS mission.

That said, it's a good CAS platform, and the F-35 is only comparable to the extent that most CAS in modern times involves dropping smart munitions from medium altitude (and that the F-35 could theoretically survive in contested battlespaces that the A-10 simply can't).

But this whole "A-10 vs. F-35" thing is a farce being played in Washington, anyway. While it might be time for A-10 to bow out, any real takeover of the CAS mission would likely involve the F-15E - which is superior to the A-10 in the crucial regard that it carriers a crew of two (though neither would be free to train exclusively for CAS as do A-10 drivers).

The ideal replacement for the A-10 would be even less sexy (and far cheaper) than that: The A-29 Super Tucano, currently being purchased by the US for Afghan forces. With a crew of two and a 360-degree optics turret (not just a forward-looking targeting pod), it has greater endurance than the A-10, low operating costs and maintenance requirements, is easily forward-based, can carry most hardpoint munitions actually used in CAS, and its crews would be free to focus exclusively on CAS. It's only clear disadvantage versus the jets lies in terms of strafing firepower (though it does possess internal guns and can strafe). Considering US personnel are already training Afghans to fly it, it could be bought off-the-shelf and fielded against a "force" (rather, a cluster of assholes) like ISIS as close to overnight as is conceivable in military terms.

Not that this will happen - the USAF wouldn't take the political risk of admitting a relative-bargain turboprop could excel at something in the midst of its all-out F-35 campaign. Just don't over-idealize the A-10. There are other airframes out there that could do its job (albeit not the F-35). F-15E might be far more plane than is necessary, but if its crews are allowed to focus on the mission (at least in fair measure - it won't be exclusively) it could still impress.

If you haven't seen the movie Primary Colors, with John Travolta playing "Clinton", you must. It is clear that the candidate is Clinton, and it is NOT flattering. It makes Clinton look really scummy. Including scummy behavior to some black friend of Clinton's whose daughter babysat for them, and came up pregnant. Frankly, I'm surprised Hollywood made that movie.

Once upon a time Hollywood gave us a silly but fun movie about a Nimitz-class carrier going back in time to stop the Pearl harbor attack. Then, go forward about 15 years and...Ben Duck Insurance as a bad pilot in a bad movie with a distinct lack of fan service...or historical research. Strike Witches has 200% more historical research in it per episode than that movie.

640 Totally apropos of not a freakin' thing....for some reason, this became an issue in a discussion with the fiancee, and I've been carrying it around as an "unsolved item" for a while -- and finally solved it.

The difference between hay and straw.

Straw is the part of the crop left over after you've harvested grain from a field. Hay is cut grass and certain other plants (e.g. alfalfa) and is generally used for animal food.

One might use bales of straw in a garden for things like erosion control. Use of hay in likewise circumstances would be unwise, being that you'd be spreading untold numbers of alfalfa and grass seeds into your "protected" area.

What does the Army tell you to do about upcoming time-critical engagements? Prepare!!! Lay in stocks of whips, chains, and feathers. Run drills for their deployment. Set benchmarks, and practice until you can beat them regularly....then make 'em harder.
