Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | John Boehner, at Fundraiser (of Course): Ted Cruz is a "Jackass"Whatever we do, guys, we have to make sure this guy stays in the Speaker's chair. There's just no one else who can give us this Boehner-level of excellence in leadership and results. What would we do without such a Giant in the speaker's chair? A political culture produces such an ubermensch but once ever 60 or 80 years. We'd be insane to demote him in favor of any other Republican. Sorry, I Baited: I actually was attempting to bait the Establishment people on Twitter who got a bit sneery about demoting Boehner last time, and was not thinking of anyone on this site. However, there are what I'd call "Establishment Types" on the site here, and they could, very reasonably, take this post as insulting towards themselves (and thus inviting an insult in return). And being worried about being banned, they then might not take the legitimate opportunity to insult me back, given that I could just be a dick and ban them. Which is a totally unfair situation -- I insult you, then you have to hold your own fire for fear of what I might do if you insult me back. So I have removed the personally-baiting part of this post, and I apologize for that. I'm just getting used to the new rules myself; there is going to be a period of adjustment. Sorry if I insulted you. I can only say I actually didn't intend to insult anyone here, but rather some people on Twitter, but you'd be perfectly right to take it as an insult against you if you supported Boehner in January. I apologize, and will be on the look-out for my own baiting statements.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: J.J. Sefton at August 27, 2015 02:30 PM (St6BJ) 2

I've been thinking for awhile of the parallel between the Obama administration in its dealings with Iran, and the Republican establishment in its dealings with the Obama administration.
(I am actually not likening the Obama admin to Iran, just pointing out a parallel in how their adversaries approach them.) The Obama admin begins by telling the world that a military option toward Iran is futile or counterproductive; negotiates with Iran in the friendliest possible way; then turns on its critics at home, says, You aren't being realistic! You must want war! and calls them crazies. The Speaker and his coterie begin any standoff with the administration by saying of course we don't want a government shutdown, for which we'll be blamed; negotiates with the administration in the spirit of Please don't walk away from this table; then get very angry at their right-leaning critics on the grounds that we're being unrealistic, that we just want to take futile stands for the sake of taking futile stands; and they call Cruz and his allies jackasses. And I want to ask the White House, you know how much respect you have for the Republicans when they negotiate with you this way? That's about how the Iranians see you. Then I remind myself: They're driving the toughest deal they can against the people they're most interested in opposing. Which for the Administration is not Iran, and for Boehner is not Obama. To understand how this works, think of a bunch of teenage girls getting their cell phones for the first time.
I guarantee you Cruz knew about this comment hours after it was made (probably quicker). I, also, guarantee that the only reason The Daily Caller has the story is because Cruz suggested to those who informed his campaign that they should offer the tip. Cruz is doing all he can to alienate and separate himself from the likes of Boehner. He calls McConnell a liar on the Senate floor...and now he has Boehner calling him a jackass. This my friends is strategy...and for once it is not impotent campaign consultant inclusiveness. Cruz is going to make his move soon...trust me on that. The absolutely ironic and hilarious part is that while the GOP will try to tear him down, it will have the opposite effect. Sort of like how they run general elections. It is pretty much open warfare at this point. Jeb, Boehner, McConnell have harsher words for Cruz and conservatives than for their "good friend" Nancy Pelosi, et.al. They have "honest disagreements" with Pelosi. They hate the tea party.
And the feeling is mutual. But they (Boehner, et.al.) earned it. How many times can we go to the well for you, holding our nose and voting R; have you spit in our face and go on expecting us to be good soldiers? Answer: zero more. Posted by: duke at August 27, 2015 02:42 PM (mDxGf) 66

I understand that 98% of Trump's support is a middle finger extended to the GOPe.
But imagine how much more potent of a protest a vote for Cruz would be. In Trump, no matter what he says this week, you have someone who's exactly like his pals in the establishment: A white millionaire who comes from money and uses it to grease his own crony-capitalist operations while suppressing his competitors'; who has always favored all of the same progressive Democrat policies as the GOPe, up until the last 3 weeks or so. In Cruz, you have a man who made his own way, who's said 'f*ck you' to the party more than anyone still working in Washington, who's undeniably conservative, and who is electable, even when the press removes their kid gloves in the general election. I really think there is something up with the "establishment" republicans. They seem not interested in serving their constituents. Rather, they have their own agenda which isn't the agenda they been selling their constituents. I tend to disbelieve conspiracies as a rule. Usually too hard to maintain, but there is a coherence to this theatre that is hard to assign to mere incompetence. It is unexplainable how Jeb can basically start selling himself as a democrat - while he's still running in a republican primary. Why shift to the left Jeb? (Excuse me, I mean"Jeb!") @136 - Define 'fraud' You'd need to establish the rules around which contributions would be made to candidates, based perhaps on polling or some other fairly objective criteria, not so much on any particular policy considerations but purely on Purge the Orange. Something like 50% to be spent in the primary, with the remainder to be spent for the Democrat in the general if Boehner gets over the primary hump. I have just finished the biography of Coolidge by Amity Shales which I had been reading. It quotes someone who says Coolidge's greatest feat "had been to restore the dignity and prestige of the presidency when it had reached the lowest ebb in our history."
As I look at our President and at the vast majority of our Congresspeople I see very little dignity. (and FTR, I don't see any dignity in Trump either, although I see a man who's direct about a number of issues .) I see grasping and greedy self interested politicians much more interested in their self aggrandizement, power and perks than in the well being of the country and certainly no interest in the opinions of most of the people who elected them. It is just a sad spectacle to see the Speaker of the House behave in such a fashion, and I'm not even sure whether Cruz-many of whose opinions I agree with-would be able to respond in anymore dignified fashion. So, why again is any member of Congress obligated to kiss Sen. Cruz' ass? Is kissing Sen. Cruz' ass a litmus test for being a "true conservative?"
I say this as someone who would happily vote for Sen. Cruz were he to become the nominee next year. Sometimes people just don't like each other. Sometimes they think that the tactics someone else employs to advance his career are distasteful and counterproductive to the others in the party. It could be any of those things or none of them. I just don't get why we're supposed to automatically think poorly of one politician because he doesn't like another politician, personally. So long as both of them vote my way more often than not, that's all I care about their like or dislike of each other. If you have a beef with Speaker Boehner, that's fine. But, I would hope it would be on a firmer footing than "he said a mean word about Sen. Cruz." And I'm sure that the two people quoted in the article were happy to run right out and tell the press all about these comments out of the goodness of their hearts and sincere commitment to comity and collegiality in the party. *eyeroll* The one guy was "shocked" that one politician would use such language about another. Trump just told WaPo exactly how he will destroy Jeb.
Folks, there is no reason for Jeb if he can't win FL. They moved it to a winner-take-all system THIS YEAR so that Jeb would have a shit ton of delegates and dominate the field. However, Trump points out that Jeb! was in charge of directing hundreds of millions of Florida taxpayer pension money to Lehman, at a time when LEH's finances were in dire straits. Then, after Jeb got out as gov, he was paid millions by Lehman and its successor Barclays for a no show job. When LEH went down, more than a billion dollars of Florida taxpayer money was lost. Jeb! pocketed millions. Makes sense, no. When Trump really presses this, he's just starting, Jeb is done, toast, adios MOFO. Posted by: prescient11 at August 27, 2015 03:19 PM (q5APL) 324

In other words they have no actual desire to *win* just make a credible opposition party showing to have their particular crony interests satiated. I can understand the "math" for the Establishment when it's along the lines of "this person might not be a pure conservative, but we can actually win so you need to compromise"
I'm not saying that's a winning strategy, but I understand what they are trying to sell. With Jeb, not only does he routinely tell the base to go f#ck themselves with delight, he's got so much baggage and is such a piss poor candidate that to say he's electable (all because he has a Hispanic wife) is beyond stupid. The Bush name is mud and Jeb really got himself into some shady financial dealings after he was Governor. Plus, people are put off by the whole dynasty/monarchy idea in politics where one family has 3 Presidents. The math simply doesn't work even if you want to have zero principles on choosing a nominee. 284 I think the best description of Trump is that he's Bill Clinton politics in 1992, running a Huey Long style populist campaign. And its working like gangbusters.
The fact that the Democrats think he's some kind of extremist crank shows how far to the left they've ratcheted over the last 15 years. "Boehner has supporters?"
He obviously does. He's managed to win re-election every year in his district by landslide numbers, sometimes running unopposed entirely. And he had no serious opposition at all to being re-elected Speaker. I know that rubs some people here the wrong way but them's the facts, and those facts ought to be dealt with forthrightly. There is no serious chance he will ever not be re-elected to either of those positions for as long as he would wish to seek them. Anymore than Sen. McConnell is in any serious danger, ever. People can get all bent out of shape about that but the prudent course of action would be to figure out how to deal with those realities going forward. How's he going to do that? Mind control congress? >>>You do realize that the Anti-slavery Whigs became Republicans? They did not die off and go away.
Thank you, I'm perfectly aware of the history of the party. Perhaps on closer review of said history you could understand what I was saying a little better. The Whigs formed as an opposition party to the Democrat party of Jackson. The true father of the Modern Democrat party. Their political function was that of an opposition party of particular interests without overriding comprehensive ideology. Yes the Whigs that had an prominant comprehensive ideology of freedom and sure will and courage to fight to change public policy DID END UP JOINING THE REPUBLICANS just as I would suspect Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul, et all would join a new conservative party if the GOP got Whiged. "The same could have been said about Eric Cantor.
Then he got clobbered by a complete nobody on a shoestring budget." Yet, there are important differences. One, John Boehner is genuinely liked and respected in his district and has excellent constituent services, and has had both of those advantages for 25 years, now. Cantor had nearly completely lost touch with his district. Two, nobody of any seriousness in Butler County, Ohio has ever even thought of running against him. For good or for ill, Ohio Republicans are very loyal to the idea of "waiting one's turn" and not shitting where they eat. Consequently, the only people seeking to run against him are crackpot losers and cranks. Dave Brat is neither of those things. At the Speaker level, he's presided over repeated winning elections for his members and does an excellent job raising money for their campaigns. A potential challenger for the Speaker's chair would have match that record, and go to 11 beyond it, to justify a change. Who can offer that in the current leadership? Nobody or we would have seen it by now. And not being in the elected leadership means, by definition, that a member can't offer that. Posted by: trumpetdaddy at August 27, 2015 03:39 PM (ljZD2) 489

See this is what I believe the Trump people are saying too. Posted by: Guy Mohawk I'm actually considering voting for Trump but realistically, every poll shows him performing the worst against any Democrat. It's not like Trump's position on illegal immigration is not well known, it's pretty cut and dry and has been thrown through an endless media loop. If there was a big majority that agreed with Trump, shouldn't it be showing up in the polls by now? Not saying he's unelectable, but I'd at least like some intellectual honesty that we could be looking down the barrel of a complete electoral wipeout all to stick a middle finger up at Boehner. Boehner has been the worst Speaker in my memory, never before has the rank and file so despised a Speaker of the House. Please list one real victory the man has had despite having some of the biggest majorities in GOP history. And all of that was in response to Obama, it certainly wasn't Boehner's agenda. Cantor obviously had a lot of juice and clout at one time or he wouldn't have been in the position he was, and then poof, overnight it was gone in a humiliating defeat. Re: The new Banning policy as commented on by Merovign this morning. Worth repeating.
Random facts about policy posts: Every time a thread mentions a ban policy: 3 people read the policy posted on the front page and sidebar. 14 people threaten to leave forever. 9 of those usernames are new. Of the remaining, 2 usernames are not seen again within a week. 67 people attempt to skirt the edge of the ban, as perceived or rumored. 6 people immediately issue vulgar attacks on the host or cob, and are banned. 3 of them change their IPs and post again. 74 people compare the policy to LGF's purge of 95% of their active userbase. 26 of those people also mention other blogs they hate. 314 people ask if the ban includes mentioning Miley Cyrus or wearing your hat backward. 29 specify what kind of hat. 220 people speculate as to whether someone they haven't seen in over 45 minutes has been banned. 90 of them come to the conclusion that a ban must have occurred. 553 people ask what happened, an average of 2.7 times, over 3 weeks. 141 people answer, the answers fall roughly into 9 categories, one of which is a restatement of the policy. Trump's support among minorities was unprecedented, and I mean unprecedented. They said WTF, so they did three more very detailed internal polls of three battleground states, including Ohio. Again, Trump's support among minorities was historic, something they've never seen, ever, for a GOP contender. Take that for what it's worth. But that's what informs my view of it. Here's a little taste, where the "you" he's addressing is Corporate America: Still I'm on the right and you're occasionally sort of, but not really, on the right. I support lower taxes. So do you. At least for yourself. I support deregulation. You only support deregulation when it suits your narrow interests, but not when it lets smaller businesses and freelancers compete against you. What you seem to want is a country with low taxes, your preferred forms of deregulation and the population of Mexico. These things are not compatible. >>>Destroying the Republican party won't get rid of all of the people you don't like in the current Republican Party. Some will go elsewhere but many will stay.
I'm not interested in "getting rid of" all the people I "don't like". I want a party that can move as a unit to actually change policy and direction of the nation. I understand that involves people "I don't like". Difference between the Whig and Republican parties; the former couldn't do hardly anything at all meaningful with public policy nor change the direction of the nation, only slow the tide in a few areas....The latter had the balls to spill the blood of and bury 620,000 sons and daughters of America and ammend the Constitution. And don't forget kiddies. Under the new rules, insulting and outright obscene language is allowed and recommended on any and all public figures (well not anyone we really like) and will not be a banning offense.
And to point out that the new policy seems to be that you shouldn't jump out with nasty name calling about someone you disagree with HERE about what they've commented about as your goto "argument". So if you disagree, use your words (just not the bad ones) and argue your point. Your point should never be that the person you're arguing is worthy of bad names and curse words. The GOP tried that in '96, '08, and '12. Worked like gangbusters eh? Even Bush the younger would have failed except by that point everyone was so totally repulsed by Clinton they couldn't stand the stink of Gore in there any more. it would fall nowhere on the bait scale-- I can insult trump as much as I like; that's not an insult of you If you take it as an insult of yourself, then you shouldn't be arguing about politics, because you are then (in such a case) simply incapable of recognizing that you are not trump, and insults of Trump are simply not, in any kind of logical world, insults of you You will have to learn that STATEMENTS YOU DISAGREE WITH, even if passionately, are not "insults" against you, nor or they baiting. People have the right to express themselves; you don't have the right to take offense just because you disagree. (Oddly, some conservatives are fond of lecturing progressives about this, but when it comes to themselves, they completely ignore it and decide to Take Offense at Statements They Disagree With.) "Why should we feed, house medic them when they don't belong here in the first place?
F that." Because they are here and it is in the best interest of everybody to not have a bunch of diseased homeless people wandering around. And because it is the moral thing to not let people starve in the streets, sick. "Whatsoever you do to the least of these, you do to me," I believe is what we were instructed to do. Sometimes you have to do stuff that you don't want to do in life because it's actually the right thing.
