John Singer Sargant never painted a bad picture. Look at how subtle and subdued the red/green complements are in that painting, especially in contrast to the striking yellow/violet of the wall and flowers.
Must admit I like Sargant's portraits more than his landscapes, but this is fine stuff. Awesome color harmonies. Amazing composition. Posted by: troyriser at August 27, 2015 09:40 AM (XHR9b) Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Proud owner of Luap Nor's Last Brain Cell at August 27, 2015 09:40 AM (gq0eJ) 18

So I've been thinking about the bannination thing, which I highly approve of, and I have an idea to improve it.
We keep all of the current banning criteria, which I think is "at Ace's whim" or "if a cob can demonstrate a fact pattern of bannable offenses". Those are good and sound criteria. I would like to add a Moron-sourced category, the Ban Duel or Ban Challenge or better phrase that I haven't thought of yet. Let's say you have a beef with someone and you both yell at each other but nobody crosses the line. Or better yet (and the reason I thought of this) someone just pisses you off by his very presence. You just wish he'd go away because he lessens your blog experience. Now, in every instance that Moron will have fans and supporters as you will have detractors and adversaries. I think you should be able to throw down a gauntlet and challenge that Moron to a Ban Duel. If accepted (and chances are he hates you back just as much) then some sort of Horde vote is taken. I haven't thought through the mechanics yet. If you challenge and lose, you get banned. If you challenge and win you take out the offending party. *(the continuous use of the pronoun "he" is intentional, we all cherish all of our 'Ettes) If this proposal is adopted I wish to have the beer concession as tribute to my intellectual property. at what point does that become a de facto hostile act of war? Posted by: Muldoon -------------------------------------------------- Yes. I've been saying that for years. Basically, the Dems want to bring in a large foreign contingent to keep themselves in power in perpetuity, by stealing sovereignty from the rightful citizens (us). It's not as bloody as bringing in a foreign mercenary army to take over, but it's just as treasonous. To say that it's an issue of compassion is bullshit, a false dichotomy, just a plain old lie. It's a power grab. Let's not passively sit by and be conned into oblivion. Posted by: Bruce Boehner at August 27, 2015 09:59 AM (E5UB0) 103

Fun to see what the "experts" thought back then.

We're long past that point. Mexican consulates in the US have been issuing illegals those "matricular consolar" ID cards, essentially giving them permission to be here, for *years*. It is with their approval and assistance that they settle in the US illegally. I'd like to know what Obama is up to w/fast-tracking resettlement of illegals w/his open borders nonsense - whether it's a long-term project to destroy American culture, or if he has more immediate goals in having his ICE assist illegals settles in every state, in most communities. Moving large populations is the act of tyranny - fomenting revolution by creating rifts and chaos amongst the people. Posted by: Lizzy at August 27, 2015 10:05 AM (NOIQH) 121

Our current immigraton system and its priorities were shaped by LBJ and Ted Kennedy in the '65 immigraton reform and over haul. Here is an extract of an article on the subject. "In 1965, Kennedy led the drive for immigration reform in the Senate. Although some Irish groups lobbied against the bill, Kennedy said the current system of national quotas that favored northern Europe violated the American values. "This bill goes to the very central ideals of our country," he said during floor debate. "Our streets may not be paved with gold, but they are paved with the promise that men and women who live here - even strangers and new newcomers - can rise as fast, as far as their skills will allow, no matter what their color is, no matter what the place of their birth." In response to critics, he also famously claimed that the change to a system opening immigration to all nations and favoring family unification would not change the mix of the country. "The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs," he said during the Senate debate. In retrospect, the mix of immigrants, legal and illegal, shifted dramatically in favor of Latin America and Asia - a fact that Kennedy, in later years, would attribute to illegal immigration" He was also responsible for legislation that has been flooding our country with refugees. He's also responsible for all of the amnesty legislation passed over the years. In short, Ted Kennedy is largely responsible for our current immigration system. And as you can see, it's was intentionally changed to dilute the White population of the U.S. which it has. White population was 78pct in in '65 it's now 62pct so it's been successful in its intended effect. Posted by: Kreplach at August 27, 2015 10:14 AM (eDW1j) 168

Moore, a crafty light-heavyboxerback in the 50's, would put uphis famous 'turtle' defense and let his more aggressive and usually much youngeropponents pound away at him for one or two or three rounds, and then come out of his shell and beat hell out of them. It strikes me that people should be embarrassed by being susceptible to being manipulated and having their thoughts and beliefs molded by propaganda.
I know I fear that for my own self, knowing as I do, the way things are unfolding in this country and around the world. I mean, how is it possible to hold views that are apparently so abjectly opposed to the views of so many others? I feel that I see things relatively clearly, for example; that Obama really is not only a horrible president, but he is also likely a horrible person - ditto Hillary; the things in the world are pretty damned bad overall; that freedom really is dwindling (more likely disappearing) in this country; that it should not be possible for something like climate change to be subjective: the data should be the data and that is it - but it's not and that is a huge fucking problem - the list could go on for a very long way. But how much of that is me being propagandized? If any of it is, then I am embarrassed by that. Posted by: Semper In Stercus at August 27, 2015 10:24 AM (BZAd3) 201

Yea, I've never bought this analysis. Yes, I saw the polls that said Biden won the debate but they were just that, polls, there was no vote or conclusive evidence. Biden was embarrassing during that debate. He acted like a condescending, trained seal. He said exactly nothing of substance but if we are judging things on who made a better spectacle on tv then I guess you could make a case for Biden. Go back and watch any Democrat debate from the times when Biden was a candidate. He was horrible. he had all the dynamism of Tim Pawlenty and scored about as well. Yes, I agree totally. The Fast BB's were all pretty, with the Iowa's being downright gorgeous. I will give the devil his grudging due, however: Bismark and Yamato were both rather attractive. I never saw the Italian BB's as being so beautiful, although many disagree with me. The British and French BB's were, IMHO, various degrees of ugly. I never thought that the Hood (which was a BC, but everyone swooned over it) was all that attractive. The Germans were our equal - but not superior - in terms of armor quality and build quality. Armor placement wasn't really an issue for them or Japan, since they ignored the treaty. In terms of fire control, you are absolutely correct. US's was, indisputably, the best overall - which isn't to say that a particular ship couldn't be "hot." By all accounts Bismark had a hot team. The coup de grace, however, were the 2,700 pound rounds that we could fire. Toe to Toe, Bismark would have to get some lucky shots in, even to an NC (which was lighter armored), since she was only firing 15" rifles. Excellent rifles, for sure, and very high velocity - but still no match for the 16" rifles on all of the Fast BB's. Everyone talks "Yamato versus Iowa." I'd go with Iowa, all else being equal, every time. Fire control, armor quality and placement, etc. Yes, those were some great ships. Posted by: RobM1981 at August 27, 2015 10:28 AM (zurJC) 228

I'm not all in for Trump either. I actually think he would be a very bad president. However, I like his presence in the arena. Oxen are being gored. Sacred cows are being tipped. Detachable penises are being exposed in pols mouths. That is what amuses me the most about the reflexive anti-Trumpers. They rail on and on about how he is not really a conservative. This is news? I believe that most of Trump's "support" is not people wanting him to actually become president. But it is the pugnaciousness of someone actually fighting back. No matter who wins the presidency, our lot will not noticeably improve. So we might as well get some satisfaction out of the event. For decades, we've described the difference between liberals and conservatives as one of talking and doing.
Liberals see a problem, write and article, create a hashtag and move on, thinking their good intentions are enough to solve the problem. Conservatives, on the other hand, always thought that problems are mostly solved through action. This difference was evident for years, but it seems to have faded in the past 10 years. Nobody on our side seems to actually get something done. Sure, there is a lot of talk, but somehow, when the voting comes around, all we get are promises. Trump, being building, instinctively knows that for every project there comes a time when you need to shoot the quit drawing plans and actually put some steel up. His mindset measures success by what is built, not what is planned. Also, I believe his ego and business mindset will clash with the governmental instincts of spend without regard. We need a radical change. Who else will bring it? Posted by: jwest at August 27, 2015 10:35 AM (Zs4uk) 262

Illegal Immigration is not just a US problem, it is happening in every western liberal democracy around the world. I do think some of it is a cheap labor thing but I think the problem is actually more fundamental. Welfare states all have one thing in common, they need an every increasing young population to fund the ever expanding benefits given to the older population. Perry was right about one thing last cycle, it is a Ponzi scheme and Ponzi schemes do not work unless new blood is constantly added. Western democracies are not reproducing at anything close to the numbers needed to support the welfare state. So pols either have to cut benefits or get new blood into the system. We know they have zero balls when it comes to cutting benefits, many of them rightly know they won't get re-elected if they fight to do that, and they can't force people to have babies so where are they going to get that new blood? Its legislature and most of its politicians have been bought or suborned by billionaire environmentalist fanatic Tom Steyer and his neo-Marxist allies. Its schools are among the worst in the nation. Its infrastructure is falling apart. Crime is exploding. Businesses are leaving as fast as their little business feet can carry them. We think we have a problem with "immigration" in this country - it's way worse in Europe.
"Immigrants" from Africa and the middle east are flooding Europe. What the problem is, is that they are fleeing oppression under Islam - violent Islamic 'armies' or oppressive Islamic theocracies. The bigger problem is that what they are bringing with them is Islam. It's like Californians escaping California for conservative states because of the failures of liberalism in California, and bringing their liberal belief sets with them. The fictional parallels from World War Z aren't much different than what is happening across the world today as illegal immigrants pour across Europe and into North America. Their exodus from Central America, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Africa is so massive that nations find themselves unable to provide vital food, shelter and medicine.....
Much of the global immigration crisis today is an artifact of Islamic based wars in the Middle East (mostly Syria) and Africa (mostly Libya). These wars have spawned a multi-million dollar human trafficking trade.... But ISIS and Boko Haram are JV, and the Taliban is now a partner in Afghanistan, and we should just sit back and let Iran work it all out. Posted by: Lizzy at August 27, 2015 10:47 AM (NOIQH) 311

From elsewhere:
"This man began with a weak mind and then was told 1. that he could do something and then 2. that he could not. If race admittedly motivated #1, should we be surprised that this person believed race motivated #2. He was incompetent all along, and yet he was hired and lured into investing his time and emotional energy in this work." One of the many problems with race-preferences. Essentially you're telling a person that they are really capable of more than they are (say, telling a mediocre student he should be able to do well at MIT), and that only their race was holding them back. Then when they inevitably struggle--far more than their peers at say MIT--how else can we expect them to feel but frustrated and believing their race is again holding them down? Particularly shameful when such people may have done just fine in a position for which they were qualified, and therefore seen that their race was not such an obstacle. But we cant' expect guilt-ridden whites and the grievance-industry nonwhites to ever acknowledge this. So generations of "beneficiaries" of affirmative action will suffer, unprivileged whites and Asians will suffer, and society itself suffers. We're now three generations into this. Which candidate, if not Trump, will bring some common sense to the military?
We won WWII with our troops driving Jeeps. Our various enemies had land mines, guns, mortars, artillery and the other weapons in use today, but somehow we didn't feel the need to armor every light vehicle in the fleet. Is there a need for small armored transport? Sure. But not for everyone in every circumstance. If our industries can make an SUV that can be warrantied for 100,000 miles, they have one tough enough for 90% of our military needs. And even at sticker price, you can buy 5 for every one of the new vehicles they are contracting now. On top of that, you can put a GPS in a vehicle for $1000, but our military need the $150,000 version? I don't fucking think so. At some point, we've got to get past this idea that supporting unlimited money for the military means supporting the troops. I'm tired of being fucked. No, an SUV wouldn't come close. What we are seeing today is not WWII. Different type of war with different weapons. My little company worked on both the MATV and the new JLTV projects in a small way. @376 This reminds me of a time, years ago, when the monks assigned to the big cathedral in Detroit thought they'd raise funds by learning flower arranging. They started growing flowers, a godly enough pursuit, and soon learned to make very nice bouquets. There was a lot of customer loyalty, and business was good.
Trouble was, the floral industry in town was all mobbed up. They didn't appreciate losing business, even to churchmen. The usual sly warnings went unheeded, so a couple of the bigs got together and decided to strong-arm the brothers. They brought in the toughest leg-breaker in the region, a guy named Hugh. Even the crime family types thought this was over the top, and asked why they needed such a badass to deal with gentle monks. And the answer was, Only Hugh can prevent florist friars. And yeah, I heard that from a priest at Sacred Heart Major. Posted by: Stringer Davis at August 27, 2015 11:11 AM (xq1UY) 412

Spend some time in Latin America or Mexico with drug cartels and failed states. Doesn't get a lot of press but parts of those areas are every bit as dangerous as Africa or the Middle East. Australia has a real problem with illegals streaming in on "boats" from PNG. Port Moresby is one of the most dangerous places on the planet. When you rent a car there you are warned 1) do not drive at night and 2) if you do, do not stop at a stop sign, just keep on rolling. It is routinely ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in the world and rightfully so. I'm not saying that everyone coming from those places is just coming for the free benefits, some are fleeing real violence and oppression. But one of the reasons some of the people on our side don't fight it harder is they need those young workers dollars. Posted by: JackStraw at August 27, 2015 11:12 AM (OGm46) 413

After listening to the morning news, and calls for more laws against "gun violence", I have a real simple solution. Any time someone is fired and has to be escorted from the building BY THE POLICE, they get taken to the nearest mental facility for 72 hour observation.
The Left has this "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" romantisized view of the mentally ill. They hate involuntary commitment. But, if you do this, it will show up on their record when they go to buy a gun. It doesn't really take any new laws. We just have to admit that there is something wrong with going into a rage when you are fired. Posted by: notsothoreau at August 27, 2015 11:17 AM (5HBd1) 443

You gotta love the slap happy effect of it, like brrrrrt with a stiff brush. But not Sargent. He wouldn't have done that. It's like a silly sketch and I love it.
I have a canvas print such as you buy online in front of me of a rock that has me utterly fascinated. Red Rocks Park, just before the tiny tunnel near top a few cars can park under a ridge. This is the rim that sticks out over the hoods of parked cars. Of the hundreds of photos of the park, no matter where you stand, no matter the path, no matter your lens or camera, no matter your composition, your photo is already taken a million times. All my photos look like all other photos. It sucks. All new photos of Red Rocks look like my photoset of that park that looks like all others, the scenery ones do. But this one single study of the rocks themselves, straight on with only 2% sky, using the wrapped canvas is the most interesting of all by showing the multiple patterns laid into the rock. Its lichen forms this similar pattern. Little dots spritzed on top of the surface as a painting, this same technique of using a stiff brush. Yet you know that didn't happen. That's just one of the patterns, there are others that make you forget you are looking at rock. It is the single photograph that looks unlike all the others. It's enlarged as far as PhotoBucket offers, and dramatic as heck. But not so colorful. Mostly red. That's why it was rejected at first. It's color is subtle, and in shadows. The rock has layers of apparent bubbles, and swirls, holes, handholds, tunnels, curved surfaces with light crawling the edges, it flows like a river and foams like the sea, and crosses as a woman's legs, and you know none of this is possible. It's rock. It for a guest bedroom and it's perfect to fall asleep to because it allows imagination to drift. And NONE of the other millions of photos of Red Rocks Park does this. >>f an IED is buried in the road, your best bet for survival is to be in an open jeep when it goes off. Let the force of the explosion carry you up and away from the blast
This is just demonstrably false. One of the major design features on the new generation of mine resistant vehicles is a V shaped, armored hull which was engineered to deflect a blast from a mine under the vehicle. There was extensive testing and engineering used to arrive at this design and it was one of the major reasons that the current generation of Humvees is being replaced. One of the silliest arguments I see made about the military procurement process is when people do the whole $500 dollar toilet seat argument and try to extend it to everything. Of course there is waste in government procurement. It's government, duh. But there was a ton of effort put into trying to up armor Humvees to make them suitable for the new type of warfare that exists today and it there was absolutely no way to make them functional to today's needs. Even if they did half of what was needed, the cost would have been prohibitive and the functionality and performance wasn't even close. Posted by: JackStraw at August 27, 2015 11:34 AM (OGm46) 530

I spent most of my career in an open jeep...much better than the HUMMV. I liked the ability to see all around me. If the IED in the road is big enough, it won't matter what your in. You won't feel a thing.
but for many of the mines and smaller devices, we'd throw a couple of sandbags on the floor and maybe a spare flak vest and voila...survivable. AND you might yet be able to have children. Not to mention with every new armored vehicle, it reduces the rapid deployment of the force. Used to be you could put half a dozen HUMMVs in a C-17. Now its what...two? More than doubles the sorties just to move a heavy Battalion. Posted by: Diogenes at August 27, 2015 11:30 AM (r65B3) This is the case. Instead of a light transport vehicle, the people trying to cover their ass in the military want a vehicle that can do everything. Just like the F-35. Gee guys, if we spend enough money, we can have the expensive planes ever built that can do everything - only they can't do anything better than our enemy's planes. Buy a specialized IED hardened transport in the limited quantities needed, but for the 90% of the other transport, buy something off the rack. Posted by: jwest at August 27, 2015 11:38 AM (Zs4uk) 547

The majority of waste in government contracting is the continued use of outdated specs for materiel that itself is marginally useful but is required by the rules to stock in certain numbers. Once the numbers fall below a mandated level a new contract is offered and the same old sh!t keeps getting made.
We never bothered to try to ask to be allowed to submit modern updated design and material specs because the process takes too long, is very likely to be shot down because someone in the approval chain has an axe to grind or just in general doesn't want to allow any outside vendor to dictate to the DoD what it uses and lowering costs. Trust me there's a lot of people who's rice bowl would be at least cracked by the utilization of modern methods and materials. I know for a fact we produced items in the '90's in the same way as they were initially proposed in 1956. Some of the required materials were NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION or were only available in a limited production run (think $$$$$$$ per unit) at limited times during the year. And p.s. no one ever mentions that the $500 toilet seat was not due to a cost overrun. It was due to the contract spec having to be met. (as I recall the seat had to perform under some really serious conditions where it was real doubtful anyone would be bothering to take a dump). The DoD supply chain needs reorganization and a complete restructuring. And that ain't ever going to happen without a dictator in the White House and a World War on our doorstep. "My first instinct is to ask how many deployments have you been on?"
As a veteran, I was "deployed" in Kentucky, El Paso, TX, I spent a year near the DMZ in Korea and then back to the states for about 6 months. In all of that time, I didn't need an armored vehicle. Neither did the tens of thousands of soldiers I was deployed with. We could have done just fine with pimped out Escalades and one eighth the cost of an Oshkosh truck. So, unless you believe that Korea, Japan, Germany, Italy, England and the entire United States is going to turn into a hot zone soon, perhaps we could save a few hundred billion and give our troops leather seats and plush carpeting. Posted by: Nevergiveup at August 27, 2015 11:36 AM (gf8BH) War. War never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage. In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world - but war, war never changes. In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the holocaust by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters, known as vaults. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wastes to greet them - all except those in Vault 101. For on that fateful day, when fire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Vault 101 slid closed... and never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will die. Because, in Vault 101: no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves Posted by: Fallout 3 at August 27, 2015 11:46 AM (zt+N6) Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 27, 2015 11:46 AM (OSs/l) 585
