Reporter And Camera Man Killed On Live TV In Roanoke, Virginia
Update: The suspect is a "disgruntled" former employee of the station. Virginia State Police are currently chasing him. (link fixed)
That headline sounds awful, like I making fun of it but it's a literal description of what happened.
The incident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. EDT during a live broadcast in Bedford County, when shots could be heard, sending the reporter and the person she was interviewing screaming and ducking for cover. The station, WDBJ7 in Roanoke, Virginia, said the reporter Alison Parker, 24, and the cameraman, Adam Ward, 27, died in the incident. Parker and Ward were filming a feature segment for the morning news program at Bridgewater Plaza, a shopping and recreation plaza.They were apparently doing a tourism story. You know, typical morning news stuff. I haven't watched the video but after seeing the image of the killer, any thought I had of watching it is gone. My understanding is the images aren't so bad but the audio of the victims is "haunting." The important thing is capturing the sick freak who did this. Spread the images far and wide.

but again, normal disclaimer -- first 24 hours after anything like this happens, all the details are wrong.

Sounds like some drama going on in that office too -- the 24 year old reporter just moved in with a (seemingly much) older news anchor recently according to his twitter feed.
I'm really feeling the "ex boyfriend" scenario is the most likely.

You don't actually see anyone getting shot.
The camera is shot first from behind (so you don't see it), the he falls and drops the camera, and then seconds later the reporter is shot -- off-screen too.
But yes, horrible screaming.
And then the expression of the anchor back in the studio -- unforgettable. Total, authentic shock.

My thought process is this: you don't hunt down some random TV crew covering some boring local news story and kill them on national TV unless you want to make a point and don't care about getting caught.
So jilted ex-boyfriend makes the most sense to me.
Jihadi could work, too, but they would have chosen a more famous target or a more target rich environment, right? This shooting took place in the boonies. And why didn't he shoot everyone else in the whole water park?

I'm still in the stalker/domestic camp. But if it were mohammedan-terror it would actually make perfect sense, making people think that nowhere is safe. And getting them to fear not just the bombs, planes etc in high profile areas/events but to fear everyday life.

I think ThunderB already answered this... but morning TV shows often advertise where they're going to be ahead of time. Also, they probably mentioned it to whatever businesses they were going to be covering, so everyone there would have known. The circle of knowledge grows really fast after that.

Regardless of viewpoint, everyone in the media is milking this senseless tragedy for all it's worth. That's what people do these days.
Personally, I'm hoping the authorities catch the shooter and keep him alive long enough to find out what his "reasoning" was, so the speculation can be put to rest.

Obviously you don't watch enough TV.
And I guess I could be making a mistake by offering rational interpretations of an irrational act, but I think it's a mistake (especially this early) to be focusing on any one of the victims as the primary target.
It could be the reporter.
It could be the camera man.
It could even have been the interviewee (who, I believe, was shot).
It could have been an opportunistic attack, in which case none of them specifically were targeted, and the shooter had some other motive.

Read pioneer FBI profiler John Douglas' books, any of them. In the course of his work, Douglas interviewed dozens of imprisoned serial killers (although Douglas hates the term 'serial killer'). Berkwitz killed those people because he was/is a sexual sadist. He got off sexually on the act of murder. That's a discernible motive.

On the one hand, the murder of these people is an evil thing. I do not wish it to continue or spread. And I hope for swift justice to be administered to the killer.
On the other hand, I have less and less sympathy for the media as a group or class.
I am troubled beyond the specifics of this crime. I grow troubled at my own sense of desensitization. I am split between righteous indignation and a degree of shame that I would even have "on the other hand" considerations for such events.

I'm in Staunton right now, and was planning on going to the Verona Farmer's Market when it opens at noon to buy a pie. The pie guy is usually completely sold out by 12:30: not the best pies in the world, but very good for the price ($7.50-$8.50).
The gridlock remark worried me, but the 511virginia.org site includes traffic cameras, which show no delays north or south of Harrisonburg, including the exit 227 camera, which is in Verona. Not to be self-centered or insensitive or anything, but maybe I'll get my pie after all.

amusing thought: if he cut over to Bridgewater and then headed south on
42, he would soon get to Buffalo Gap - 10 miles west of Staunton - and
exit the valley into the next valley to the west. If he stays on 42 for
another 15-20 miles, he gets to Craigsville, which has an active Klan

I'm guessing that reporters and cameramen often have to deal with dummies doing silly stuff around them, you know like that people walking behind the reporter doing silly faces at the camera. So they probably do their best to ignore whatever potential distractions people are doing around them.

Ratchet and Clank is easily the best single-console platformer series ever made. I think I have all but one of them. And I think they're coming out with a new one for PS4.

The cameraman I get. The reporter, OK, kind of. But the person being interviewed doesn't even look askance either, and he's standing right there in plain view pointing a handgun at the reporter for a good five seconds.

Many if not most Americans are completely devoid of real-world experience with violence. I'm guessing the victims didn't/couldn't register the gun or perceive the threat. They couldn't believe it was happening. It wouldn't process. It was unreal to them right up to the moment he started shooting.
Something I noticed about violence, based upon personal experience: When things go South, they go South in a hurry. Once moment everything's normal, the next moment you're in the shit. You rarely see it coming no matter how aware you are.
