Biden May Run For President, Announcing His Vice President Liz Warren Will Take His Place After a Single Term

I talked about this in the last post of the day on Friday but it seems like a big enough thing to be repeated: Biden seems to be soliciting (the rumors go) Liz Warren to agree to serve as his VP, to be announced as his running mate the day of his own announcement. Thus, the presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate would be running as a team since day one of the presidential candidate's entry into the primaries.

Making this more attractive to Liz Warren, who is old as f***, would be Biden's promise of a one-and-done term, making her the heir apparent for the Democrat nomination in 2020.

Not a bad deal. She just may take that deal, and it just may work, at least as far as beating Hillary, who seems to be on the None-and-Done plan.

Jazz Shaw writes of former GOP AG (the last under Bush) Mike Mukasey's argument that Hillary may have legally disqualified herself from ever holding US office again: that's one of the punishments listed in one of the laws she almost certainly broke.

Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States. As used in this subsection, the term “office” does not include the office held by any person as a retired officer of the Armed Forces of the United States.

They specify one corner-case area where "office" does not apply, suggesting it applies every other place you'd think "office" might apply.

But Charles Cooke suggested to me that would be hard to "litigate" in court. In fact, actually, I think it might be too easy to litigate -- and dispose of. The Supreme Court has ruled the qualifications listed in the Constitution (age, natural born citizen) are the exclusive qualifications that may be imposed on a candidate, and may not be added to by a mere act of Congress no more than they can be set aside by an act of Congress. It would take an Amendment to add to, or subtract from, those constitutional qualifications, and thus this law would be ruled, I think, to not apply in the case of La Hillary.*

Which actually you can see the sense of -- otherwise an Obama-type president, with a Holder-type AG, might attempt to make mischief by making up and prosecuting the opposing party's best candidates for laws which claim to "disqualify" people from US office, should such laws be claimed to have been violated.

Alas.

* Specifically, laws establishing term limits on US officeholders were struck down by the courts, on the theory that such laws add an additional qualification (that the candidate should not have served x or more previous terms) to the list of qualifications in the Constitution itself.

29 VP always seems like the way to go to get the big office next, but historically it has not. We've had 43 different presidents of the United States (Grover Cleveland is counted twice for having two non-consecutive terms). Of them, 14 were formerly vice presidents. Not terrible odds, just over 10% right?

Except eight of them were the result of a president dying in office, not election after the president left office. And only 4 of them became president immediately after VP, succeeding the sitting president: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren and George H.W. Bush.

That's just not very good odds at all.

93 Every Democrat I talk to is convinced that their candidate doesn't matter. They believe victory is baked into the electoral cake. And I'm inclined to believe them based on pretty much every election since 2000. For a Republican to win (given demographic and media realities) the GOP guy has to be pretty damn good and the Dem has to be just awful. That was the exact scenario in 2004. And that was when Bush was still very popular AND an incumbent running against John Kerry.

What are the odds our nominee ends up being even pretty good, never mind perfect? I'd say slim to none.

Contra conventional wisdom, I think Ted Cruz is the only guy who could pull that off.

138 The reality is that if you had to have a Democrat, the Democrat party today is not the party that nominated Humphrey.

Unless a whole lot of white folks go back to the Democrats Jim Webb ain't gonna make it past the first six primaries. Bernie Sanders is getting the white folks who voted for Obama, but he's not getting the rest of Obama's voters. Martin O'Malley seems to be the Democrat Rick Perry, lost in the noise.

Joe Biden is the best - as in the least harmful - that we'll see from the Democrats. He's experienced, he plays well with Congress.

So if you think the GOP is destined to be yet again the Party of Fail, if you think Donald Trump is the Antichrist and is going to steamroll the rest of the field, and if you think that we can't afford to burn it down and salt the earth after five years of Bush sucking up to the Democrats to prop up his wars and eight years of Obama sodomizing the country with a five-iron, then....

President Biden! Hail To The Chief!

Personally, I want to see a bunch of the also-rans on the GOP side fold their tents and let their supporters go elsewhere, and see if it makes a dent in Trump.

It would be good if we amended the Constitution to limit the number of terms Senators and House Reps can serve.
Ironically, new blood on a reliable basis would be very good for the conservative approach to self-governance because it would circumvent egotists entrenching/protecting their power.
And this would tend to curtail the entrenchment of bureaucracies too.

However, it is a good thing that the Constitution is very limited in what counts as a disqualification for the highest office of President.
The potential for chicanery would be mighty.
While I don't favor a Perry candidacy (but I'd sure vote for him in the general election): just look at the bullshit they're doing to him in Texas!
The bogus indictments against him are outrageous.

Democrats liberals are expert at finding ways to criminalize politics.
The easier it is to disqualify someone from seeking the presidency: the more keenly our opponents will exploit and manipulate those ways to their great advantage.

We don't need a law to know and SHOW that Shrillary has disqualified herself from high office.

187 Specifically, laws establishing term limits on US officeholders were
struck down by the courts, on the theory that such laws add an
additional qualification (that the candidate should not have served x or
more previous terms) to the list of qualifications in the Constitution
itself.

So how did someone get standing for that? Wouldn't you have to run, win the election, get denied the seat, and sue only then?

While one of the stupider things this state has done, it wasn't really in flaunting of the law.
He died after most ballots had been finalized. Law allowed him to remain on (rather than reprinting ballots) and if elected, governor got to choose a replacement (as if any other vacancy had opened up.)
What was hijinky was the Gov. Announcing the replacement in advance.

That's because California, in its infinite wisdom, created a unique blend of gasoline, which is used nowhere else.

Only oil refineries in California refine this unique blend, which is why you can't just ship down a few tanker fulls of refined gasoline from a refinery in Washington when the price of gas in California spikes.

Who knew that cutting yourself off from the world market in refined gasoline would be a problem?

201 This is essentially an inter se battle between the Clinton cabal and the Obama crime ring, i.e., who will maintain control of the party. If Hillary wins, its the Clinton gang and she would win--at least the nomination. If not her, then it is an Obama selected candidate. Biden/Warren fit the bill.

Look at the leaks coming out. From the FBI, among others which is controlled by Obama. Barky's admin is in control of the leaks and if they did not want Hillary sullied with anything over which they have control, there would be no leaks, no "sources" and no news. It would be "Clinton's nomination is certain and her election likely" in the news.

It is not. She is being taken out. By Obama. As slowly and painfully as possible.

208 61 93 Every Democrat I talk to is convinced that their candidate doesn't matter.

_____________________________________

There's a gas station in Marin County where the owner was getting complaints that he was changing too much (over $4/gallon).

Then, as a crazy experiment, and to shut everyone up, he just raised the prices to $8/gallon. (Not a typo -- eight dollars a gallon).

Guess what happened? He made more money and had more customers than before!

it was all because of his location -- not only is he in one of the richest areas of the nation hut he's one of those "last chance for gas" sweet spots on a road that tourists take (going up to Mt. Tamalpais). Plus, he was getting people who drove there on purpose just to take selfies of themselves getting the country's most expensive gas!

I think he has since returned the prices to the $4 range, and now he doesn't get any more complaints.

That was true of Bush in 2000, but in 2004 he was very well liked. Most of his first term enjoyed high approval ratings. And in 2004 the public hadn't totally soured on Iraq yet, plus the economy was in good shape. He was a popular, war-time incumbent running against a dull, horse-faced, humorless lothario from the nation's bluest state. And even that election was closer than it should've been.

I have yet to see any evidence that America is better than a nation where the majority wants a loose moral climate and free $hit from the government. That's why Democrats win.

I'm old enough to remember in 2004 that Democrats were told they needed to make inroads with religious voters or they were doomed. The Evganelical turnout was insurmountable, and Karl Rove was a genius.

You can look up "Rosary" Joe Biden or the attempts of Dems to demand Christians vote for them because they help "the poor and stuff."

My guess is Democrats do not get the Obama turn out in 2016. The identity politics in the liberal group are coming to a head. Their party will become a barrel of crabs, all jockeying to get out first.

$8 a Gallon for Regular Gasoline? Sausalito Station Owner Says Why
The gas station's owner provided an interesting explanation for his prices this week.

"Asked by local media outlets as to his reasoning, the station’s owner, David Mann, said he was tired of people complaining.

“People would complain about a 2 to 3 cent difference with other stations, so I raised the gas prices to almost 8 dollars to shut up the complainers. And it worked. They stopped complaining,” Mann told KTVU.

“People in Marin County have a lot of money. They don’t care about $2 or $3 higher per gallon,” he told SF Gate. “I don’t want to take advantage of it. I just want to get rid of the complainers.”

Prices were down to about $5 by Friday.

But it might also be an overreach. - Perhaps painting with a brush a bit too broad? Maybe not.

I like the same basic idea of putting them on the defensive issue buy issue.

The shotgun approach has its advantages; nobody has time to refute all of them, so some slips through and are accepted by less thoughtful folks. Its how the left managed to destroy the Iraq war: lying constantly, without taking time to breathe, about so many things they couldn't all be dealt with, until even many on the right repeat that crap.

356 I stated this back in June, and had been saying it for a loooooning time.

http://www.arbiterofcommonsense.blogspot.com/2015/06/uncle-joe-and-indian-2016.html

Obama hates the Clintons. Biden extends Obamas legacy. Sitting VPs almost always get the nomination. Pocahontas Warren is the left's wet dream.

"[Biden] chew up Hillary in the debates saying that she had her chance under her husband's first term to pass HillaryCare, but didn't - and Obama did. And that she had her chance in '08 to swallow her pride and become the first female VP, and then become the eventual first female prez in '16. But she didn't, lost her chance, and that Lizzy will fulfill that role instead."

Opus: But he's honest about it.

@ #404

I'll tell you what's really weird about Trump.

I had no idea I would find myself supporting him. I couldn't stand him in 2012.
I didn't take him at all seriously at the beginning of this election cycle.

But he fully (and believably) committed to an issue I think is vital, and without realizing it I was suddenly in his favor.

And I think that might be true for lots of other conservatives who don't look at Trump as a conservative.
- But we do look at Trump as right-of-center and reliably conservative against Illegal Immigration.
And with that view, I (and likely others) began to see the advantages of independence in Trump.
HE CAN'T BE BOUGHT.
HE'S AN OUTSIDER.

Those last two Trump qualities were simply not all that interesting to me... until he became THE Champion on fighting Illegal Immigration.

meh. Trump haters never attack Trump's policies, since pro-Trumpers like them and anti-Trumpers want to avoid having a conversation about them at all.

So the attack his person. But that too fails, since whatever insult they hurl at him is usually more applicable to the other candidates.

437 That's what confuses me about Trump. Nothing hurts him. Nothing even slows him down. I used to think he was going to flame out by finally saying something even his supporters couldn't stand, but it doesn't matter what he says any more. He just keeps snowballing. I mean Joe Biden will say whatever you tell him to and Hillary has proven over and over she can be bought no matter what the legality or cost to her nation.

In digging for Trump news I found rumors of him using mob connections to get things built. One thing undeniable is he will do what has to be done to get things done. He's proven that, he's bragged about that. But I don't know if the mob accusations have any merit. And it's not like rumors of having them slowed down Kennedy or Obama any.

And when I say that I wasn't interested in Trump's independence and the fact that he can't be bought: I mean that I just hadn't given it any consideration at all because he didn't seem represent anything at all (except not being a Democrat).

Once he came to seriously represent a major conservative issue: all of his other major advantages began to shine. He's a kick-ass fighter. He can't be bought. He's a political outsider alien to the perverse ways of the Beltway. He's self-made and no one can outspend him in the general election.

Short of Cruz or Jinal climbing to the top of the polls, Trump is the obvious way to go.

Fair enough. I used to look at Trump like that too.
He just seemed to be all about Trump. And nothing he said seemed substantive or really serious.

But the fact that Illegal Immigration is a MORTAL THREAT to the conservative movement should be taken into consideration here.

Trump has done more than bring the issue to the forefront.
Until another candidate is courageous enough to issue a Policy Paper on how he or she will combat Illegal Immigration: TRUMP IS THE LEADER ON THAT ISSUE.

"I think he's fantastic. He's my favorite president, hands down, of my lifetime," the "Django Unchained" filmmaker told Vulture. "He's been awesome this past year. Especially the rapid, one-after-another-after-another-after-another aspect of it. It's almost like take no prisoners. His he-doesn't-give-a-sh*t attitude has just been so cool. Everyone always talks about these lame-duck presidents. I've never seen anybody end with this kind of ending. All the people who supported him along the way that questioned this or that and the other? All of their questions are being answered now."

And here's another reason why I don't think Trump is only all about Trump and nothing else:

Trump already has more money than God.

Carefully committing himself to the toughest stance out there on Illegal Immigration is politically and financially RISKY.

- Major corporations and city mayors have predictably announced that they will be severing ties with Trump.
But what does Trump care: He already has more money than God.

And this makes me believe he's serious about it.

Guy Mohawk,

I won't pretend like it's impossible that Trump could utterly jettison any position he takes to get elected once he's President.
But that's true for any politician.

But I would like to point out that any politician who utterly reneges on such a major promise to his base supporters KNOWS that he is a guaranteed one-termer who will be hated by those who supported him the most.

That just doesn't sound like Trump. - To make a move that he knows will relegate himself as one of history's hated losers.
What's the point of that?

It will never happen, but would be awesome to ask her if she felt she deserved to be paid that much vs an adjunct. When she says yes because experience or qualifications or whatever, ask her why that does not also apply to business owners. Do they not also deserve a higher salary for their experience and qualifications?

Again, questions that will never be asked.
