12 food, though, that has almost nothing going for it. It occupies precious crop acreage, requires fossil fuels to be shipped, refrigerated, around the world, and adds nothing but crunch to the plate.

It's salad, and here are three main reasons why we need to rethink it.

Salad vegetables are pitifully low in nutrition. The biggest thing wrong with salads is lettuce, and the biggest thing wrong with lettuce is that it's a leafy-green waste of resources.

32 I was doing some research on (Mexico/immigration/migrants) this morning and found this at migrationpolicy.org:

Top 10 of 2014 - Issue #9: The Points System Is Dead, Long Live the Points System

Canada in January 2015 is set to launch a revamped immigrant selection system known as "Express Entry," after extensive preparations throughout 2014. After several years of upheaval in Canadian immigration policy, this moment marks the end of a quiet revolution: the demise of the traditional points system worldwide.

Rather than giving permanent residence to any immigrant who passes Canada's points test, as in the past, Express Entry will create a pool of eligible candidates who must market themselves to employers or participating provinces and territories to secure a place in the Canadian immigration program. Building on policies introduced over the past few years, the new system will make it difficult to immigrate without a job offer or local work experience.

The points system was a Canadian invention that dates back to 1969. In its traditional form, it admitted immigrants with characteristics such as university education, language skills, or experience in particular occupations. To qualify, candidates simply had to earn sufficient points across a range of criteria. They did not need a job offer, making this route an alternative to the widely used "demand-driven" system in which employers sponsor immigrants to fill specific vacancies. By contrast, points systems were often referred to as "supply-driven" because flows depended more on prospective immigrants' decisions than on employers' demand.

Wow. Do Canadians know this happened?

This is what we should do.

Also, aren't Canadians getting ready to vote out the conservative Prime Minister that probably made this happen?

104 American Airlines will operate the first charter flights between Los Angeles International Airport and Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, Cuba, later this year, providing travellers the only nonstop service connecting the West Coast to Cuba since travel restrictions were eased.
"American is the premier carrier in Los Angeles and throughout the Caribbean, and this new charter flight shows how we continue to expand our reach by offering new routes and services our customers want," said American's senior vice president Art Torno as he made the announcement.

106 Yeah, babies make me think of that Windows 10 commercial, with all the multi-culti babies, and how their lives will forever be changed by a new crappy operating system from Microsoft.

I love the kid in the hut on the African plain. Yeah, *she's* real concerned about her Operating System and not, for instance, if she'll survive to 9 yrs old.

Also, as my dad pointed out to me this weekend- those kids will not either "grow up in a Windows 10 world." They'll grow up in a Windows 15 world.

109 You know, the GOP myrmidons vapor-inducing cry "that Trump supporters are neo-nazis!" would be funny if they weren't trying to be serious.

1) We're going on how many years now of the leftists calling anyone they disagree with a Nazi? And now you're going to join in?

2) Your standard "used a word that white supremacists and neo-nazi's have used" for who is and who is not a Nazi, is pretty much is the same as #1.

3) You know and I know you will never actually produce a single, living person behind these most horrible of horribles you are so offended by--better to have the faceless foil you can mold to fit to your villain.

110 Since I got willowed...

Re this Hugo business...

Ever since I was a kid I've loved science fiction. I grew up reading the works of the Triumvirate (Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein), as well as the likes of Sturgeon, Leinster, Ellison, Blish, Bova, Niven/Pournelle, a long list. (And I have to tell you Harlan Ellison was never anywhere near as good a writer as his ego told him he was.) And I continued to read it throughout my life. But in recent times I started noticing a change in SF, that I did not like.

Some years ago my wife was a nationally recognized online reviewer of SF and fantasy, hence for a good while we got a steady stream of books from a couple of publishers for her to review. And I read a lot of them myself. Or tried to. The fact is that in recent years a lot of the so-called SF out there has become, at least to me, unreadable.

This is because the SJWs, as they are known here, had moved into the genre, and some (not all) of the publishing houses started putting their work out there. And without notable exception, their "work" was crap. SF, at least a fair amount of it, stopped being about aliens, time travel, spaceships and such, but became just hackneyed, hateful leftist polemics.

An example of this was a supposed SF anthology edited by "Connie Willis", whom I'd never heard of, and you never saw such dreck in your life. And hate? For a group of people who are always going on about how bad "h8rs" like us are, these people hate with the heat of a thousand suns, especially if you are a white heterosexual male who does not bow down before the Great God Marx/SJW GLBT/female/PoC orthodoxy. Most of their stuff is downright vicious in this regard.

I've long felt that the main reason the whole "Sad Puppies" thing got started was that those writers who did not pray before the SJW idols got a bellyful of the hate (and bad writing) and decided to rebel. They were not entirely successful, but at least they made their presence known.

Frankly, I don't see SF as a genre surviving much longer. For one thing, as was even noted at Worldcon, the SF fan base is rapidly aging. The young, so thoroughly dumbed down by the Left, is not coming in. Unsurprising, I suppose, since nothing seems to hold the millenial's attention longer than 30 seconds, unless it's Kim Kardashian's well-f*cked ass.

Sad, really...

Nah, Organized SF will have problems because of the SJW's and the crap writing. But there are a bunch of authors out there making a ton of money off SF/F (and partially because they care about writing good/entertaining stories over message).

First: Everyone knows the Oort Cloud is not the Source of SMODs, but of the Threads.

Second: The thing is that Sci Fi was message fic before message fic was cool. Go back and re-read Heinlein or Herbert or even Asimov- all of them raised issues; things for people to ponder. The difference, of course, was that Heinlein, Herbert, and Asimov wrote good stories first, and message fic second.
