Who In The GOP Field Will Seize Trump's Populist Mantle
At the moment? Nobody. Luap Dnar is too in favor of open (or at least loose) borders. Cruz has been trying, but he's got some problematic votes and some wiffle-waffling on a couple issues. Walker can't seem to make up his mind on immigration. Etc. And none of them understand what Trump is doing, anyway. Trump is, more than anything else, the F*ck You candidate. That's why he can get away with minimal policy statements. It's why he can get away with apparent contradictory positions. It's why no one acts terribly surprised at whatever latest "revelation." Yep, given a choice between burning it down or accepting that people with wrong-thoughts might actually like (and write) Science Fiction, the folks at WorldCon decided to burn it down. Now, if the Sad Puppies want to take it all the way, the could blow up the industry. It'll be interesting to see how vocal the Puppies are in the next year. he can get away with minimal policy statements. It's why he can get away with apparent contradictory positions. It's why no one acts terribly surprised at whatever latest "revelation. AllenG, this strikes me as a Political Urban Legend. Yes, Trump is saying little of substance, but how exactly does that differ from Shrillery "College Must Be Freeee!" Klintoon, Bernie "We Hafta Make the Middle Class All Better!" Sanders, Ted "I'm Against Anchor Babies...no, wait, that was yesterday" Cruz and the ever-popular Scott "Who, Me?" Walker? If Trump's message is "We Gotta Do Stuff," it's okay with me. I see (judging from Breitbart headlines) that the other GOPe wannabe Preezys are "embracing faith" which is, IMO, the last refuge of scoundrels. Posted by: MrScribbler at August 24, 2015 08:43 AM (SNBrO) 32
No one in the field can seize Trump's mantle because they all desperately need the GOPe donor money. Trump is the only one who can afford to tell the GOPe to piss off.
Walker's waffling last week was particularly pathetic. Cruz was a close second. Those used to be my top two choices. Posted by: cool breeze at August 24, 2015 08:43 AM (6Cu7i) 33

I'm not sure that's an either/or situation. I think it could go either way. If Trump hangs on (and he seems to be becoming more serious as the campaign goes on), then we'll have a style-over-substance election- one that Trump has a very good chance to win. If Trump does not hang on (and it's way early in the season), and one of the actual Conservative candidates (likely Cruz or Walker, in my estimation, but I'm making zero predictions) takes the nomination, then we *should* get a substance election (since the Dems don't have anyone with a good image). That, again, gives the Republican candidate a very good chance. If Trump does not hang on, and some DOPe shill becomes the nominee (Jeb!, or Kasich, or Christie, for instance), the the Democrats win their first 3rd-consecutive-term in very, very long time. The difference is that Republicans are typically held to a higher standard by the MFM (delenda est). Usually, a Republican trying to run on "hope and change" (which, functionally, is what Trump is doing) would be peppered with all kinds of policy questions with the intent of destroying their credibility and/or image. Indeed, the MFM (delenda est) is trying to do that with Trump. Trump, however, is shocking them by saying, "FYNQ" and Conservatives (and conservative-leaning LIVs) are eating it up. For too long nations like China, Japan and Mexico has been playing us for fools. The Cosmopolitan cultural Marxists have imported disease ridden 3rd worlders to dilute the majority population. The elites use inner city feral beasts to scare the majority into compliance. H1B indentured servants are stealing jobs that rightfully belong to us. ________________________ That's one of the most bogus arguments the left makes. Mexico's constitution explicitly provides that Mexican children born in the U.S. are Mexican nationals, and are eligible for Mexican citizenship (which Mexicans get when they reach age 1. So American-born Mexican kids sent back home to Mexico have the exact same rights and privileges in Mexico as Mexican-born Mexican kids have. And the same is true for many other illegal alien kids. When that "surge" of illegal alien kids from Central America started a few years ago, the CA governments were building re-patriation processing centers for when their kids were sent back home. Saw the photographs of one of the centers in Honduras; it was quite nice . . . and very empty. It's not that we can't send these kids back to their home countries; it's that our government won't. I think he was referring to votes-for-passage. Of course, we know that's not the limit of support. There are also those who "hear the call of history," and all sorts of other things. The fact that the DOPe and DOPe favoring media don't want us to remember is that the entire thing could have been derailed at several points, and Republicans didn't (indeed- threatened to punish Republicans who were about to step out of line) do any of the things they could have. Heck, all that had to happen was for one Senator to withhold "unanimous consent" to waive the reading of the bill. They yanked one amendment rather than let it be read, they almost certainly would have done the same for the full bill. I think that the liberal George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" books are good, and I enjoyed liberal John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" even if it was very derivative of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". RickZ: There's a word to describe those folks: Progressives.
That's a word they use to describe themselves. Like calling an unpatriotic law "patriot act." A correct label would be "regressives," although that suggests they are regressing to a state as bad as our primitive ancestors, when really they seem to be finding ways to be worse than our most barbaric ancestors. Perhaps "degressive" might be better applied. (Yes, AFAIK, I just made that up.) Posted by: mindful webworker - any doughnuts left? at August 24, 2015 09:45 AM (VQjKe) 255

I was conversing with a friend earlier this year, and he said that the market was going to crash late this summer.
I am expecting a told-you-so phone call later today. Actually, his reasoning was cynically good. After years of staying out of the market, individuals have gone back in because inflation has made "chasing returns" necessary. I know, we don't have inflation, but prices keep going up, but anyways, his rule that when the mechanics and plumbers get in, it's time to get out, because the system is designed to vacuum money off the bottom and send it to the top. I don't know if that's right, but three out of three crashes fit that pattern. Posted by: OneEyedJack at August 24, 2015 09:52 AM (kKHcp) 277

Posted by: Agent J at August 24, 2015 08:43 AM (ueOgE) I am sorry that it was such a stressful day for you. Perhaps you should speak to your pastor about the issue. Having been a new pastor at a number of churches I know it may just be that your pastor doesn't want to deal with really contentious issues right now. I don't know the content, of course, but were they speaking of the future of Your individual church? I think that unless people are pushed to the wall and/or and heresy is being preached it's best to stay at a a church you've gone to with people you know, who know and love you. That support is important at contentious times like this. Wait and see what the new pastor has to say and what happens in your church regarding this. It's hard for new pastors to make transitions. Pray for your pastor. We need it and appreciate it and keep reading the word, going to Bible study and focusing on Jesus Christ during the service. "Our hope is built on nothing less..." Do you know that hymn? An let us know how things goes. I will keep you in prayer, Agent and your church as well Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2015 09:59 AM (OSs/l) 292

Looks like the possible correction to the Dow and Nasdaq will be to the 5% range, which is where it is hovering. By the way, has anybody here seen a circuit breaker? I know someone left one here from 1987. Buehler? Buehler? ThunderB, so who is closest to our new Reagan? (not snark, I would vote for a cardboard cut-out of Reagan with a boom box playing his speeches. That said Reagan faced Ted Kennedy and Tip Oneal.)

P.S. There are hymns that are not my favorites but I don't think "Many Gifts, One Spirit" is really about change in the church. It's a musical reflection on the church as body using Paul's analogy that we rely upon each other and all have different gifts. It does say "as the old ways pass away" it's too give comfort in change-including, I think in the case of your church-a new pastor with new ideas.
Pastors like to meet the members of their new church. Perhaps you can make an appointment to see the pastor, introduce yourself and talk about your interests and talents and see where the new pastor is coming from? That might lessen the anxiety about a topic that wasn't addressed. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 24, 2015 10:09 AM (OSs/l) 297
Re this Hugo business...
Ever since I was a kid I've loved science fiction. I grew up reading the works of the Triumvirate (Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein), as well as the likes of Sturgeon, Leinster, Ellison, Blish, Bova, Niven/Pournelle, a long list. (And I have to tell you Harlan Ellison was never anywhere near as good a writer as his ego told him he was.) And I continued to read it throughout my life. But in recent times I started noticing a change in SF, that I did not like. Some years ago my wife was a nationally recognized online reviewer of SF and fantasy, hence for a good while we got a steady stream of books from a couple of publishers for her to review. And I read a lot of them myself. Or tried to. The fact is that in recent years a lot of the so-called SF out there has become, at least to me, unreadable. This is because the SJWs, as they are known here, had moved into the genre, and some (not all) of the publishing houses started putting their work out there. And without notable exception, their "work" was crap. SF, at least a fair amount of it, stopped being about aliens, time travel, spaceships and such, but became just hackneyed, hateful leftist polemics. An example of this was a supposed SF anthology edited by "Connie Willis", whom I'd never heard of, and you never saw such dreck in your life. And hate? For a group of people who are always going on about how bad "h8rs" like us are, these people hate with the heat of a thousand suns, especially if you are a white heterosexual male who does not bow down before the Great God Marx/SJW GLBT/female/PoC orthodoxy. Most of their stuff is downright vicious in this regard. I've long felt that the main reason the whole "Sad Puppies" thing got started was that those writers who did not pray before the SJW idols got a bellyful of the hate (and bad writing) and decided to rebel. They were not entirely successful, but at least they made their presence known. Frankly, I don't see SF as a genre surviving much longer. For one thing, as was even noted at Worldcon, the SF fan base is rapidly aging. The young, so thoroughly dumbed down by the Left, is not coming in. Unsurprising, I suppose, since nothing seems to hold the millenial's attention longer than 30 seconds, unless it's Kim Kardashian's well-f*cked ass. Sad, really... It's a little more than that. The original point wasn't even especially political; a few authors started noticing that the Hugos were just a giant Big Publisher circlejerk, and the barrier for entry into that circlejerk happened to be SJW lunatic politics. If you were not an inducted SJW cultist, you simply weren't getting in. So Sad Puppies (and the LIB variant, Rabid Puppies) was basically formed to shed light on this fact. After that, it morphed into an effort to return the Hugo voting to actual, yannow, SF fans rather than professional victims who would otherwise be forced to go on hipster welfare. (Patraeon) Well, the SJWs are having none of that nasty democracy, not in THEIR circlejerk, no sir! The sheer amount of salt over the fact that they brought this on themselves has the cultists in whipped up into a self-righteous frenzy (then again, when is the Perpetual Outrage crowd ever *not*?) and they're all double-timing their defense of The Narrative on Twitter, Facebook, and so on. It's amusing and yet pathetic at the same time. It's a good sign, though. The more these talentless imbeciles beclown themselves publicly, it's a step closer to public meltdowns which will hopefully send them back under the rocks they'd scurried out from under. The NHS gave a guy named Mohammed Abad a free penis while old Britons die in hallways/waiting for an ambulance.
Just want to leave that out there. Yeah, I thought it was an amusing story until I saw that. Leave it to progtards to actively participate in accelerating their own destruction. Posted by: Ian S. at August 24, 2015 10:29 AM (S+N7W) 302
I took my money out of the market last year, probably a little too soon.
My opinion is that the DOW is not worth anymore than the bottom out price back in 2009 (about 8,000). If the Fed signals it will not raise the interest rate then maybe the fall will not happen. Really though the stock market is a completely rigged game. Posted by: Make America Great Again at August 24, 2015 11:57 AM (LXJ1e) 303

Somehow my brain added that possessive when I first read the link, suggesting something even weirder than what is actually being reported. Posted by: Alec Rawls at August 24, 2015 12:08 PM (kTTUz) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0566 seconds. |
