John William Waterhouse, "Circe offering the Cup to Ulysses" (1891)

This warmer version is nice, especially since her apparel is more informative. No idea which is closer to the original, although a TinEye search reveals that most internet versions resemble the Wikimedia version above. But it's not always the case the wikis are correct, as we've seen with at least one Pissarro, The Boulevard Montmartre at Night, and a few Van Goghs: Lane with Poplars, Still Life with Scabiosa and Ranunculus, and Flying Fox. Although I didn't include one of the bad comparisons on that last one, Google it. Almost all the results are wrong. The one I posted was from the Van Gogh Museum.

21 Do they still teach Mythology in grade school? I found my old Bernard Evslin "The Adventures of Ulysses" textbook, the one with the groove-a-licious illustrations by William Hunter. Go Scholastic Books! This, and Edith Hamilton's Mythology, really fired up a kid's imagination. I would hope that the popularity of the Perseus books shows a renewed, or perhaps never slackened, thirst for adventure. Or is it too -ist and -centric?

While Circe and Ulysses are Greek mythology, on the subject of shaving, apparently Roman women shaved off all hair that was not on their heads. That is probably what caused the start of Roman decadence and the decline and fall of Rome.

Sanctuary Cities have shown us the way. Back in the 19th century Andrew Jackson won the conflict with John C.Calhoun over nullification but Jackson was a slave owner and exterminator of Native Americans so we don't have to honor anything he did.

The Romans didn't even have a word for soap. They washed by laving in olive oil and scraping off excrudescence with a bronze strigil, body-shaving in the process.

Germans did have a soap, made of animal fat. Romans thought they smelled.

67 From 1899 in vol. 2 of The Universal Anthology there is an ink drawing of Circe in her palace, nude save for one covered leg. Sitting upon her throne with arm raised and a spark of light above hand as if casting a spell. This all framed by an arch that is guarded by winged serpents in an Egyptian style. And in front of the arch, are various pigs.

Its a sort of pandora's box for the left really. If people just ignore the rules, in huge numbers, there's not much the government can do. That's why they went after Tea Party related groups and donors in the IRS; they couldn't attack the hundreds of thousands of participants.

Back when I was i college, I went to the beach one day.

I saw a woman stroll by who had a perfect 10 body, wore a green bikini, and didn't shave at all.

She had dark brown hair spilling out of her bikini bottom, thick bushy armpits, and hairy legs.

Did I mention that she had a perfect 10 body?

That vision was permanently imprinted on my brain. She looked absolutely glorious. To this day, I have no problem whatsoever with natural female body hair.

122 I agree, the wand looks like a rusty iron rod attached to the wall. That's the problem with oil-paintings; you have to make obvious where one object is detached from the next.

The painter should have infused the air around the wand with a shimmer or a halo.

140 Then the beautiful woman took her stand in the middle of the saloon, and stretching out a slender rod (it had been all the while in her hand, although they never noticed it until this moment), she turned it from one guest to another, until each had felt it pointed at himself. Beautiful as her face was, and though there was a smile it, it looked just as wicked and mischievous as the ugliest serpent that ever was seen; and fat-witted as the voyagers had made themselves, they began to suspect that they had fallen into the power of an evil-minded enchantress.

Its' not bad. It started off with Caesar which was a bit of a let down since they have all these hand to hand combat battles. I thought the Romans were more disciplined in how they fought. Also, the soldiers looked a bit old. How the hell do you live that life of a soldier and reach middle age?

Anyway, in Nero he has his dead wife dolled up and on the throne. Her skin looks like blue cheese which was interesting.

The print now hangs over our bed in our bedroom. Feel free to add your ribald comments below.
