from WZ:

A recent visitor to Yosemite National Park has been diagnosed with what is believed to be the plague, state health officials said Tuesday, the second such case in as many months.

The patient, who was not identified, visited California from Georgia in early August, with stops in Yosemite and the Sierra National Forest, officials said. The person is being treated in Georgia.

A child from Los Angeles County who visited Yosemite was diagnosed with the plague in July, the first reported case of the disease in the state since 2006. The child is recovering, health officials said.

[personally, I thought we've had a plague in D.C. since Jan 2009, ha ha.]

19 Don't be fooled by Trump's double-digit lead in a new poll: He is not going to win. He's not going to win the primary. He's not going to win the general. He's not going to win a third-party bid. Sure, he can damage the GOP ticket badly enough to guarantee Hillary's election, but he can't win. He's too flawed, too liberal, too undisciplined and too afflicted with verbal dysentery when even slightly provoked. He lacks the fundamental presence and gravitas of a commander-in-chief.

Donald Trump is not running a real campaign. He is working the phones, stirring the pot and using the media ecosystem to its fullest. Soon, the bolder members of the field will follow Rick Perry, Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush in making harder and more decisive strokes against him.

Donald Trump is narrowing Democrat Hillary Clintons lead over him among potential voters next year, a new poll found.

Trump is now within 6 points of the former secretary of State, according to a CNN/ORC sampling released Wednesday morning. The survey found Clinton currently tops the outspoken billionaire, 51 percent to 45 percent, among registered voters for the 2016 general election. Trump trailed the former first lady by 16 points last month.

75 Today is the 203rd anniversary of the defeat of the British frigate HMS Guerriere by her American counterpart, USS Constitution, on 19 August 1812, perhaps the most famous naval encounter of the War of 1812. Constitution, under Captain Isaac Hull, had been cruising off the Gulf of St. Lawrence and upon encountering Guerriere, fought a hard-won battle that left the British ship dismasted and
helpless, a third of her crew casualties. (She was scuttled the next morning.) All told, the Constitution defeated five British warships during the War of 1812. Designed by naval architect Joshua Humphreys (1751-183 and laid down in Boston in 1794, she was one of six frigates authorized by Congress during the presidency of George Washington to meet the threat of both "Barbary pirates" and British belligerence. Launched in 1797, she saw earlier service in the West Indies and the Mediterranean and subsequently continued sporadically on active duty until 1855, when she was converted to a training ship. Still considered a commissioned warship of the U.S. Navy, the Constitution is maintained today as a historic vessel in the city where she was built.

"I have indeed been fortunate but not more so than I am confident my brother officers will be if they fall in with the enemy. Where there is anything like equal force you will find [the British] are not invincible. They are not fighting Frenchmen or Spaniards." - Captain Isaac Hull (1773-1843)

99 66 ... True, MP4. 50-plus years ago winter meant sledding and snow ball fights and the sounds and feel of steam radiators after being outside for hours. Now ... well let's just say the ground is further away, snow shovels are a lot heavier, and getting up from a snow sled would require divine assistance. I may cuss Virginia summers but the snow fall and winter temps are manageable.

111 On August 19th, 1945 two white painted G4M-1 Betty bombers landed at Ie Shima carrying the Japanese surrender delegation. At Ie Shima, the Japanese, after being escorted by impressively tall Americans, boarded a C-54 to meet Gen. MacArthur in the Philippines. The surrender documents were signed in the bullet ravaged Manila City Hall. Then the Japanese delegation flew back to Ie Shima, re-boarded their Betty bombers, and one bomber safely landed in Japan.

And she still sails! I think she's still commissioned, or had been until recently.

199 Morning, Glories!

Aw, man. I liked Tomlin on Laugh-In, of course, and I seem to remember liking her in that silly movie with Steve Martin. And Milady and I really, really enjoyed her one-woman comedy show in Chicago, long years ago.

She played different characters, against an audio track. She'd be a bag lady pushing a shopping cart, for example, and there'd be no cart, but the sound effect of squeaking wheels as she walked across the stage. At one point, the sound track broke, and while they fixed that, we were treated to several minutes of Tomlin coming down stage-front and talking to the audience directly about how the show worked and other things. Then the tech was fixed, and she slipped right back into character. Nice performance, all around.

So I am the big disappoint to hear about her new movie. Of course, if in the end they decide the abortion would be wrong, that would change a lot; yes I can dream. And since most people go to movies for feel-good, hard to imagine it'll be a big hit. Yay! The baby's dead! Let's watch it again!

Oh, well, we'll always have "We're the phone company. We don't care. We don't have to." to apply to so many things.

And yeah, if she had a father in her life (ideally, still married to mom) the mother's inattention would likely have been less damaging.

But these are irrelevant points - there are abortion rights to sell and if they must infantilize the pregnant girt and ignore the part her boyfriend had in the conception, and should have in the abortion decision, so be it.

346 A group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, accompanied by two female teachers,
went on a field trip to the local racetrack, Churchill Downs, to learn
about thoroughbred horses and the supporting bourbon industry, but mostly to
see the horses. When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it
was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go
with the other female teacher.
The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men's room when
one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the
urinal.
Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and
began hoisting the little boys up one by one, holding on to their 'wee-wees'
to direct the flow away from their clothes.
As she lifted one little guy, she couldn't help but notice that he was
unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher
said, "You must be in the 5th."
"No,ma'am,. "I'm riding Silver Arrow in the seventh race, but I appreciate
your help."

It's to push free abortions on demand.

See, it's no longer about mean old, white men telling gals what they can do with their body, it's about mean old, white men denying them "access" (code for "free") to abortion.
That's what the vulva-attired Code Pinkos have been agitating for: free abortions.

I would say his position is the first big step. Get people to realize that "health of the mother" is too broad- and what should really be meant is "life of the mother." Once people realize that the exception is because sometimes one life must be lost for another to be saved, they'll start realizing that Rape and incest don't rise to that level.

But yes, he is Doing the Job the GOPe Won't Do. He pushes Democrats, Top-Drawer Political Consultants, the "conservative" media and a host of would-be Preezys into Full Crazy Mode. 498 In an unusual legal move, the Obama administration has taken the legal side of the Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organization in a federal court case that American terrorism victims' families had already won.

Lawyers for the Justice and State Departments are arguing that the PA and PLO should not have to post a bond showing they can pay the massive damages during their appeal in U.S. federal court.

One of the families' attorneys argued otherwise. "The State Department should stand on the side of the American terror victims and not on the side of the Palestinian suicide bombers," said Nitsana Darshan-Leitner of the Israel Law Center.

The jury's judgment against the Palestinian groups came in a case, Sokolow v. PLO, before Manhattan U.S. District Judge George Daniels in February and could involve penalties of more than $650 million, triple the amount of damages awarded by the jury under U.S. law, plus interest.

The money would go to victims in seven deadly terrorist attacks in Israel between 2001 and 2004, including 11 American families. Hundreds were injured and 33 killed in the attacks.

For starters, I can't imagine the families ever seeing a dime. Who are they going to collect from?

And, of course, the State Department getting involved on the Palis' side is par for the course. State is one of those agencies that has needed a complete house-cleaning for many years. Marry and be absolutely exclusively faithful in intimacy and in heart as you raise your children.

Why?

Because instead of doing what feels good now, you want to do what is best for your marriage and family to be.

She also raised five kids while her husband was a alcoholic. I hope Dorothy is having a nice break in heaven. She deserved it.

You got that right, Bucko.

Once you get on the other side of the 50-year line, you tend not to think of the past -- at least as it relates to teh wimminz -- not as things that should propel you to confession (which, thankfully isn't in the cards for Jooos anyway) but as events to replay and savor. You'd do 'em again if you could.

And a woman's (or a man's, I think, but I don't know) religion has little to do with the fun aspects. I know liberal Hippie Chix who weren't really down with playtime, and a couple of Catholic girls who were.

Point of Order--I said "moral" I did not say "legal." What they "deserve" remains illegal and is a crime even as they commit multiple illegal acts and crimes.

We are a people of laws and I--and everyone here, I'm sure--will follow those law--they are still entitled to all the protections of the law.

But, the moral question of what they deserve has been decided by they themselves--they are entitled to all they have extended to those babies.

I was told he had indeed gone to the authorities. And, based on the "tone" of the response decided that it would be --shall we say -- counterproductive to pursue the subject further.

I went through something similar. There is no "guide" to give. Here are some options for the classroom:

1. Regurgitate the bullshit to keep your GPA up. You don't have to believe any of it. You're there for a credential, not for the truth.

2. Avoid the minefields as best you can, even in the courses taught by the Authorities, be polite, evasive, etc.

3. Fight the power and take your lumps.

I did a combination of all three, saving the fight for the professor whose class I couldn't get less than a C in. I didn't segregate myself socially. Reading GK Chesterton in the library, alone, kept my spirits up.

662 I think it has gotten worse. Women have been having sex and regretting it for ages.

--

Guys need to realize that although women may be brainwashed into thinking they like casual sex, biologically it is not true.
When a woman has sex, even with someone she doesn't think of romantically, her body will produce oxytocin (bonding hormone) which will cause her to develop an attachment to her partner.
This is one of the reasons virginity was so prized in ye olden days.
So if you hook up with a girl, be prepared to expect her subconscious to tell her it means something.
In my view, much safer to only attempt to go to bed with a girl if you are in love with her and see her as the mother of your future kids.
Besides, if you do a one night stand and she later aborts your kid, how would you feel then?

696 Guys need to realize that although women may be brainwashed into thinking they like casual sex, biologically it is not true.

When a woman has sex, even with someone she doesn't think of romantically, her body will produce oxytocin (bonding hormone) which will cause her to develop an attachment to her partner.

Rule #1. Never do cray cray.

699 So, I wrote to the reporter, Owen Holdaway, who wrote that Yazidi Sun Girls article we all ready and admired yesterday, inquiring whether he could put us in touch with the Sun Girls' leader, so we could donate to the cause.

Last night he wrote back:

"Sorry, can't really give out their details for money to be sent, but two agencies that work heavily in the region are Rwanga Foundation [http://rwanga.org] and Yazda [http://www.yazda.org]. The latter agency in particular has done a lot of work, and has really helped me. - Owen."

I've let Ace know about this, but don't know if he'll post it.

These seem like humanitarian agencies, so donations to them are unlikely to lead to immediate ISIS Monsters Being Castrated By Hot Kurdish Chicks Videos, but one can hope that giving these organizations help will in some way assist those brave ladies in the field.

I'm also kind of curious about the outcomes of a child born to married parents who loses one of them to disease or accident vs a child born to unmarried parents, but I'm pretty sure no one will research that sort of thing.

------------
There are studies on that --- I remember reading about them 10 or 15 years ago. IIRC, they were all about widows vs. unmarried/divorcee moms.
The outcomes for kids raised by widows were not as good as for kids with the father in the home but they were FAR better than for the other single moms' kids.

They speculated that this was mainly because of the absence of resentment/anger against either parent. Also, the 'ghost father' was idolized, put forward as a role model. Most often the kids (and mother) had close, loving relations with the paternal family.
And obviously there was no tension between the parents, between step-parents/step-siblings etc. as there may be with divorce.

No problem, PR. I didn't think you were "implying" anything.

Just wanted to present some clarity, for those who weren't about to head back through the dead threads and look to see who said what.
