Can You Handle These Job Interview Questions I don't remember being asked to name how many uses for a lemon for flight school. The Thing Hopefully ATC doesn't see this.by 2008 over 90% of high-school seniors surveyed about their post-graduation plans said they were going to college. By the following October, over two-thirds of graduates were in fact enrolled in some form of post-secondary education. The college attainment rate for young people in their mid-20s, however, paints a different picture. In 2013, only 32% had a four-year degree; 10% had a two-year degree; and another 12% or so had a one-year, post-secondary certificate with value in the labor market. Despite the optimistic talk about "college for all," it appears that the forgotten half has not gone anywhere. Recent research suggests, however, that some licensure and certificate programs might actually be a better option for some students than a more traditional, two- or four-year degree program, and certainly a better option than dropping out of college with debt. The Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce has released several reports providing further evidence that the financial returns on education are not simply a function of how much schooling you have had, but what skills you have acquired. According to the Center's studies, there are now very significant overlaps between the earnings of those with licenses or one-year, post-secondary certificates and those with two- and four-year degrees. Most striking, a 2011 study showed that nearly 30% of those with two-year degrees are out-earning the average four-year-degree holder.WMD But I thought Bush lied and there was no WMD in Iraq? Hussein never had and was all a lie by Bush to invade for oil and revenge for his daddy and because he loves death. Posted by: Christopher Taylor The US Army knew about the big depot out in the northwest desert of Iraq. They chose not to do anything with it because it was thought the weapons were too unstable to move. The practice in the US was to build an incinerator in place to destroy our own stored arsenals of chemical weapons. I never read about any plan to build an incinerator out there to destroy the contents of those bunkers. And it was actually kept pretty quiet, from my recollection. Will SMOD have to pay taxes on its winnings? Posted by: Vendette at August 14, 2015 10:21 PM (TEpA2) 75
Speaking of robotic lawn mowers, I have a lawnmower question to set before the Horde tonight:
We need to get a new lawnmower. I've only ever used hand-me-down mowers, so I don't know what to expect out of a mower. We have just under an acre of very unmanicured yard -- pasture grass, weeds, tree seedlings, fallen branches, rocks, etc. I also have a few square feet of actual lawn grass. I've used a gas mower and a corded electric mower in the past. The gas mower was a pain to start, noisy to run, and a pain to pause when I had a phone call or needed to listen to someone. The electric mower was much easier for me to use with instant on and off, but something happened to the electrical system and it shorted out the extension cord and stopped working. I don't know if the yard was too rugged for it. I've never used a rechargeable, but it seems like it might be too wimpy for our terrain. Does anyone have any advice to help us select a new mower? Many thanks for the suggestions! (No goats!) Posted by: Mindy at August 14, 2015 10:21 PM (dg8OI) 76

I've been very pleased with my Honda gas mower pretty easy starting and it still runs even though the shat is bent from hitting a rock or three. 75 Speaking of robotic lawn mowers, I have a lawnmower question to set before the Horde tonight:
(No goats!) Posted by: Mindy at August 14, 2015 10:21 PM (dg8OI) You used an electrical cord not rated for the mower. You really have to make sure that your cord can handle the amps that the mower needs. If you don't, it will burn up the motor pretty quickly. There are some battery powered mowers out today that claim to mow for about 30 minutes per charge (they give you 2 batteries), but the reviews all say that the batteries need to be replaced every year at about $100 each. I saw a big, industrial robot mower being tested beside the highway hear awhile back. Almost the size of a micro-car with four rough terrain tires one at each corner. The whole Reagan created AQ is based upon a very simple and incomplete reading of history.
The US funded the Mujj in Afghanistan against the Soviets. The Soviets, with a cratering country because Reagan broke them, retreated. Thus leaving the Mujj in charge. And then US interest waned. And the Mujj got overthrown by AQ. What was called the Northern Alliance is what was left of the US supported resistance. And this President is busily throwing the Northern Alliance under the bus. To rephrase - so that the Left doesn't have to -
Every candidate that supports Both sets of dangerous human beings are now here. One set are illegal. Fine. But the other set are here because they were made legal; which in many places they were not, until living memory of many of us here. This was often because states were considered states, with the right to limit who got to stay and how. Oregon kept out blacks Constitutionally, entirely, until very recently (2002, wasn't it?). Other states allowed for "restrictive covenants". It was generally assumed and accepted that there existed people who were so different from us, that they could not be allowed to live with us - unless they had proven up front that they could be so allowed. One is not different from the other. The illegal alien is illegal by dint of the current law. Likewise, the now-integrated Negro is legal by dint of law, which was a different law until the 1940s-60s changes in this law. And look how he behaves. I do not believe that conservatives may have this both ways. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at August 14, 2015 10:52 PM (AVEe1) 188

Well, it looks like the mower consensus is gas with a Honda engine. And frankly, the mowers we have been borrowing have started pretty easily, so there's that.
The corded mower really wasn't bad. You just start closest to the plug and work your way further and further away from it. The cord just drags on the area you've already cut. Also, we had an outlet out in the back yard, so we had coverage just about everywhere. Thanks again for the advice! (This place has ruined me. I'm afraid to say "Thanks for the tips.") Last I heard the batteries only lasted about 5 years. Of course they started to lose their "peak" charge right after they were installed so you end up using more and more gas as the thing ages.
Yeah I was giving the manufacturer's specs of 8-10. About as reliable as their MPG estimates. Anyone who's had a cell phone knows how reliable rechargable batteries are and what happens to them over time. The more you use it, the less it holds. Its like having a gas thank that crumples and shrinks each time you fill it. And of course, their estimates are all based on an empty car: no driver. Each pound of weight you add to the car, the less range you get from the battery. Lots of hidden problems that are there even if by some scientific miracle they come up with a battery that lasts as long as a tank of gas and fills as quickly. Wow, a 10MB hard drive!
Anyone else remember those 3.5" floppy disks? The double-sided versions of them could hold 1.44 megabytes. And the single-sided ones, well, they could be made double-sided just by punching a hole in the right spot. I actually found a few of those old disks while cleaning out my desk at work last week, in preparation for my transfer to a new department. These disks were my personal property, but I threw them out because there was no point in keeping them since those drives aren't really being made anymore. That 10MB hard drive is equal to eight of those floppy disks. Eight! Meanwhile, my PSVita has a memory card that's slightly larger than a fingernail and holds 32 gigabytes. There's also a 64GB version of that card, but it's not officially available in the US. A typical Vita game takes up about 3GB; it would take 3000 of those 10MB hard drives to hold that much data. Sometimes I just find it sort of mind-boggling the way technology has advanced within my lifetime. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... My 2 cents worth about lawn mowers.
Just under an Acre??! You do NOT want just a push mower. You want a rider. A lawn tractor. Unless you plan on having a big garden, then you want a garden tractor, the difference being a garden tractor has a PTO on the back that you can attach lawn and garden tools to. Learn from the mistakes of a city boy who moved out and went to Screw U to learn this... Don't go bottom end and get a manual shift tractor, get one with the hydrostatic trans. It will make you life easier, and you will be happier. Don't get a three blade mower deck, there are more moving parts to wear out and longer belts, which stretch out faster. Get a 42 to 46 2blade deck. 15hp wont cut it, get a 2 cylinder 20+hp motor. I've had no problem with Briggs, except they are louder than Honda. For God's sake, find the rocks and move them! Oh, rule of pinky applies for sticks. If the base is larger than your pinky, you don't want to run over it with the mower, or you'll be sharpening your blades monthly. Estimated cost 1500 that's how much I paid for my Cub Cadet. My first JD Sabre was 1k, and maintenance was higher and the trans made doing the lawn a pain. Hope that helps. Luma-Pro was always the benchmark in handheld light meters, well in to the 1980s.
Don't know if you want analog or digital though, or for that matter, even a spot-meter. So, check out some photography forums, or just some Bing searches & reviews. Oh, and if you're going to really learn to master a handheld reflected light meter, then your camera bag is not complete if it lacks a Kodak 18% Grey Card for consistent meter readings. And if you're going to play with a handheld light meter, then take the deep dive, and begin to learn The Zone System for Black & White photography. It's intended for film and chemical processing, but what you'll learn will definitely serve you well for any digital photography you'll pursue. Photography is a lot like big league sports. And I will tell you, having dug gardens by hand and have used garden tillers... a tractor with a tiller beats it all. Alternately, you can have the guy down the road do it for you. and keep the push mower for doing the 1/5 acre around the house that you keep watered for a firebreak. Remember. Film is just still photography, done twenty-four times per second. Video is thirty-per second. The same "basic photography" rules apply, as to exposure range, saturation (be it B&W or color), light, shadow and composition. The skills to make a beautiful still composition, readily translate to motion picture production. Remember the "caricature" of the classic neurotic Hollywood director, who always had that lens and eyepiece on a neck lanyard? It's for establishing the "framing" of a scene, one element at a time. Those are still-photography basics, carried over to video. Learn to think in "still" composition, then it's easier to make those artfully framed scenes translate into motion. Basics and Fundamentals. Practice! Good luck, and have fun too! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 14, 2015 11:59 PM (McRlu) 389

Those oddball questions are a good way to see if a candidate can think critically. They basically all come down to some sort of math problem. Piano tuners in Chicago....5 million people live in Chicago, 10% own a piano, a piano is tuned once a year, one tuner can tune 10 pianos a week....so you need 1000 tuners.
I have no idea if it's 10% or 60% and if a tuner can do 10 a week or 100 a week. There's no right answer for these questions, the right answer is showing the thought process. Posted by: Jeb at August 15, 2015 12:04 AM (0LHZx) 404

2-blade vs 3-blade is the longbow/crossbow of the mower world. Look, those two overlapping blades are "timed" -- they pass each other every time around, and they go around pretty fast. The timing is held by a toothed belt on toothed cogs. If you hit anything that even slows down one blade -- a dog's chew toy, for instance, or a tennis ball, not to mention sticks and stones -- the belt will slip on the cog, and the other blade will come around and take out not just the blade, but the bearing carriers and bearings. On an Ariens/Gravely that's over $300 every time. On rough ground of an acre or two, you'll average one of those incidents a year. Bearings go in on a shop press, and the carrier towers are heat'n'beat, not something you want to do in the driveway.
Have one. Luckily I also have two antique 3-blade Wheel Horses to take up the slack while it's in the shop. Other than that it's a fine machine, although a 2-blade leaves a groove in the grass when you turn, same as the 3-blade. Posted by: Stringer Davis at August 15, 2015 12:06 AM (xq1UY) 409

Mindy, an acre is a pretty hefty stretch of lawn. Who will be doing the mowing? Make sure the mower handle is easily adjustable to height. Also get the largest bag you can that will fit at the back of the mower, not the side. It is a pain to get around trees and stuff with a side discharge.
Definitely go with gas power for that much lawn. Get as much horsepower as you can afford. Also consider the weight of the carriage. I recommend zero radius turn front wheels so that you do not have to llift the front end of the carriage at the end of each pass. Make sure you push it around in the store to make sure it fits you. And, yes, get it at a power equipment dealer. Buy a tried and true model that is easy to maintain. With that large of a lawn, you will probably at least need a beginning and mid season tuneup and blade sharpening. It's not a bad idea to have a sharpened blade ready to go. A dull mower blade makes the best mowers seem awful, and they bruise the grass blades and cause an uneven cut. The mower needs winterizing, and fresh fuel put in on spring's first use. Otherwise buy a nice JD rider! Posted by: ObjectionSustained at August 15, 2015 12:12 AM (1/hKC) Posted by: SMFH at it all at August 15, 2015 12:12 AM (zyIlW) 432

Working on The Hobbit, supposedly Peter Jackson tried some high frame rates per second, like 48. Good to see all the vintage cameras "spoken for" in here. Classic Leica & Exacta..... good stuff!
I want to re-aquire a copy of my first 35mm rig. Kodak Retina IIc, (small "c"), with the 50mm f/2.8 Schneider-Kreusach lens. I'll happily pay to get a full service on it, especially to clean, lube and re-align the rangefinder system. Don't let the "Kodak" name fool you. It was a West German made masterpiece of the era, with a Synchro-Compur leaf shutter, featuring "X" synch all the way to 1/500th sec. And had a wide angle and short telephoto lens available for the interchangeable front lens element system. In that the lens and shutter collapsed into the body under a "barn door" hard cover, it was a very briefcase-friendly camera, too. Give me that and a brick of Plux X Pan, and I never needed a light meter. Just got to where I could read the light by eye, and never be off more than a half-stop, too. And now I'm missing Dektol, D-76 and all the other soups of yore. Just what I need, another expensive hobby. *groan* Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 15, 2015 12:14 AM (McRlu) 442

by 2008 over 90% of high-school seniors surveyed about their post-graduation plans said they were going to college.
###### Not surprised. Most go to college because Mommy and Daddy are paying for it. It is party time until Mommy and Daddy stop footing the bill then they gotta get some bullshit degree. Those that are out in four years know what they want before they start. These folks usually go into a STEM field. This idea that college is for everyone is a cruel myth that really has hurt people by wasting the time and money of those that either cannot handle college level work or wish areas where college is not needed. I see this all the time with nursing students. At my institution nursing students need B- grades in chemistry and several biology courses to gain entry into the nursing program their junior year. Those that do not get in are now stuck; they have done two years of college with not enough of anything to finish in two years. 'Course you tell them less FaceTime and more textbook but it goes in one ear and out the other . . . A fact I always make a point in telling them when they are in my office crying that their lives are over because the nursing program will never take their D- in chemistry. We really should start funneling kids into professions/areas of study their senior year of high school. The trade schools would love it. The universities would howl; their tuition cash cow would evaporate overnight. Posted by: The Man from Athens at August 15, 2015 12:21 AM (O3k74) 463

Not a 100% apples to apples comparison but close
5 years ago when I moved into the new house I bought both a mower and snowblower. The mower is a Honda, used say 25 times a year. Never had an issue, starts on the first pull each time. And I use it for both the nice lawn and the shitty weedy, crap around my property that gets all dusty, grimy, etc. At the same time I bought a Sears brand blower. I use it maybe 10 times a winter. By winter #3 it was already falling apart, making weird noises, took forever to start. I've taken in it for repairs 3 times. It got fixed and it works fine and since I don't use it that much, I'll keep it, but if/when I ever get a new one, Honda it is. Of course the Sears version was much cheaper than a comparable Honda, but as always, you get what you paid for. Posted by: Jeb at August 15, 2015 12:28 AM (0LHZx) 486

Hell, there is even talk that the Raiders might go to St. Louis and play in the James Dome until a new stadium is built while the Rams go to LA to play in either the Coliseum or Rose Bowl until the new stadium there is finished. Past being sick of the "all college is BS" line, just numb to it now. It is whatever you say, I suppose. But a certain number of people in a given population should know Old English, and Greek philosophy, and medieval history, and art criticism. Less than we're getting now, at public expense? Sure you betcha. We have poisoned the well. Sensible folk like those here do not want to hear an opinion based on those fields of study, unless it's coming from a former student of them who posts here regularly (and we have some of each, upon whom you are calling hell fire.) Some day the nation will need the knowledge from those fields, and we will lack it. We are now finding the same lessons to be true in what we thought were the unassailably non-political fields of science, engineering, and mathematics. The dysfunctional relationships will kill you every time. They usually allow you easy access to trouble in the other areas you mentioned. You gonna buy a house with someone they better have your ring on their finger or you will get screwed big time. Not that divorce is peachy but you both have legal standing and Mr. Right cannot just walk away with a blonde bimbo leaving you holding the bag.
Yup. The primary relationship is most important. If that is bad, the others come looking for you. We pair off into those bad relationships when we are young and stupid thinking that things will just work out. They don't. And not many are willing to entertain input on those choices. Of course the Sears version was much cheaper than a comparable Honda, but as always, you get what you paid for.
Posted by: Jeb at August 15, 2015 12:28 AM (0LHZx) Yeah, I get that. I don't have a problem with Briggs engines, but they are louder. If we were comparing equal products with just different engines, I don't know that Honda would be worth the premium, but that's not how it works. Seems like every component of a Honda is just one tiny level better than a big-box brand X is. Added up it makes a difference. Having said that, I'm working on year 18 of a Ryobi weed wacker/ whatever else you can put on the end of the shaft. I'll probably go back to that when it finally shits it's piston. Sears never made anything but money. And they don't even do that any more.
You could always get almost-the-best and almost-the-worst in their lawn product line, and some other departments too. Cheap sells, and 90% of the Briggs motors you'll ever see are their cheapest economy line, corner-cut to meet some merchandiser's bid. Their bigger motors are perfectly OK. Know what started great? They moved to SD not long thereafter - don't recall when - but they were originally the LA Chargers. I don't follow this stuff, but my impression was that the St Louis guy really, really wants to leave St. L. and be in LA (didn't he buy the old Hollywood Park racetrack area in Inglewood to build his stadium?). Have no idea what's going on in Oakland - assume it's a power play to get the Raiders out of the Coliseum, an understandable desire. And it sounds like the Chargers owner has decided to move, and the SD populace is not exactly losing sleep over it, based on some surveys this week. They'd prefer to keep the team, but voting to put much taxpayer $$$ into it is not polling well. There's no hope for CA, and little for SD, but it's the last major metro in CA where sheer idiocy, stupidity, criminality, fascism, social engineering, and race-baiting aren't just the staple of local govt., but wildly popular with the idiotic majority of the electorate. For now. The Coastal Clueless (NPR class affluent/comfortable types with the civil intelligence of hamsters) will combine with the mob, at some point, to take the place to SF's and LA's level. @472 Ever want to have some good clean fun, get union professors and union schoolteachers on each other's ass. Not the same unions, atall.
The people who are trying to destroy you are able to buy STEM on the market. Posted by: Stringer Davis at August 15, 2015 12:33 AM (xq1UY) ~~~~~~~ Been teaching at universities in tenure track positions since '93. Never been in a union. Granted the universities have been for the most part private but the state school I taught at did not have such unions. This may have changed as it was ten plus years ago. Retention is much more important for small private schools than larger state schools so they tend to work harder and keeping students on track. The "all college is BS" line IS BS and usually spouted off by folks who never went for some reason. College is not for everyone but all fields of study will appeal to some and all honest fields of study have merit. Pushing high school seniors into college just so they can go is a sin; it wastes their time and money unless they have a plan. Going to get a degree so you make more money is not a plan; unless you call getting a four year degree in eight a plan. It doesn't have to be highly detailed but at the very least a general area one wishes to pursue. You wanna get a degree in Old English great! Just keep in mind that getting a job in that field with a BS will be tough; get a PhD and go into academia. While it still may be tough the skills learned in getting that PhD will be of value in other areas. At least as of last year, his widow was still going strong in AZ. Read the Life mag cover story done on him (1942?) in a copy he had signed. Cover showed him with the Capitol dome behind him, taken during his publicity visit to DC. He was one of the first "heros" given high-profile media treatment during the war. Bebe,
Oh ok. I thought it was qdpsteve asking I'm lame and don't drink but SA is close for me. I grew up there. I was bartending at a hotel downtown when they had a special exhibition Formula One race. It was crazy, they put up cement barriers along the streets of downtown. I was on the river, which a level down from the street, inside the hotel and every time the cars drove by it was LOUD. Stace, Dread Pirate Rober, and Elizabeth Wolf are also in SA. I'm in Austin. Posted by: lindafell de Spair at August 15, 2015 01:14 AM (xVgrA) 598

---------------- We used to have people like that, Edgar Whitcomb, Gov. of Indiana. Wrote the book, 'Escape From Corregidor'. A very good read, the guy's story is amazing. When men were men: "He served two tours of duty in the Philippines and was promoted to Second Lieutenant. During the Philippines Campaign, Whitcomb's base was overrun; he was captured by the Japanese and was beaten and tortured by his captors, but was able to escape. Recaptured a few days later, he escaped a second time and was hunted for several more days but was able to evade his pursuers. He escaped by swimming all night through shark-infested waters to an island unoccupied by the Japanese army. He was eventually able to secure passage to China under an assumed name where he made contact with the United States Army and was repatriated in December 1943" Now we get...., Barack Obama. Posted by: rhomboid at August 15, 2015 01:00 AM (QDnY+) O.co and Qualcomm are both near 50 years old, about 10-15 years past their sell by dates. Qualcomm has drainage problems, and O.co is shared with the A's, and if you have ever tried to play football on a baseball infield, you know it is less than optimal (I have a shitty knee to prove it). When San Diego built their baseball stadium, the football team felt they would be next, but it didn't happen. So, now you have a team feeling like they are being slighted, so, now they are seeing who is interested in them. Oakland really can't build a stadium anywhere but on the Coliseum site, so one team will be happy and the other pissed. It appears that the A's will get the stadium they want. Yep, Stringer, forgot the NRA thing. And yes Mike, "when men were men" is hard to fault as a short-hand for some of these guys. Have an older friend I sometimes mention here, he was no high-profile guy, but overall he "lived the life" too. Enlisted in November '41, *volunteered* as a replacement for Guadalcanal in October '42, knew Boyington there when he was XO of a squadron, used to go to black bars andsmoke dope with the musicians in50s LA, hung out with Howard Hughes' personal flight mechanic and WC Fields' one-time girlfriend. Ashley, not to get too much into the weeds, but SD Stadium (I call it by its original name, "naming" rights were 40 years in the future when it was built by taxpayer money) was one of the, if not the, best public multipurpose stadiums of the 20th century (all kinds of awards from architecture and planning institutions over the years). From the fans point of view, it was not at its "sell-by date" even 10 years ago. I believe it was in that period that a poll of football writers placed it as the best NFL venue - which shocked and outraged everyone, incl. the Chargers who want an up-to-date place to play. Hadn't heard of drainage problems. It's built in the SD River basin, so water has always been an issue (there's a city water facility next to it), but wasn't aware there were new problems. The Chargers are not unreasonable to want to replace the 50-yr old facility - it's actually good for (most) fans, but the modern revenue model does not work there (boxes). What's weird is that the city and the team could not work out some deal. A mixed-use modernized development of the site would be guaranteed $$$ for both parties. Dunno what Spanos can get up in Carson, but he's been looking for far more than a new stadium. Don't understand how a mutually agreeable deal for such a prime site (where the transp. network is already built, and good) couldn't be struck. MWNP, you hit the key point. Trump is not - probably, mostly - about Trump (I mean the "phenomenon"). It's about alienation from the country as currently ruled, well-founded resentment of the GOP and how it has performed, and the broader and longer-standing frustration with many things like a worthless distortion machine called the "press", lawlessness, etc. And - it's August 2015. Approximately a geologic epoch away from any actual voting of consequence. Yet - complete freak-out by so many. Kasich, of all people, actually said at the forum that Trump represents something that should not be ignored. But .... meh. Trump's unlikely to be nominee or president, and a degraded Third World shadow of what was once the US is unlikely to be significantly helped or changed by anyone else running. I have a 5 hp Briggs on an old Snapper tiller. I
picked it off of a junk pile 20 years ago. 'Ground' the valves in a drill press, using a file, scraped the wear ring out of the top of the cylinder, put in new rings, have been using it ever since. Compression is down to nearly nothing, and that stupid Briggs Pulsa Jet carb is a PIA to get pumping each year, but once things run, it still tills. Plays havoc with the mosquito population when it starts working hard. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 15, 2015 01:03 AM (9mTYi) Mike, I have an old Merry Tiller with a cast iron 1.5 horse Briggs on it. I "restored" it about 15 years ago, and used it for one season, haven't pt in a garden since. But I'd be willing to bet it would run if I fueled it up and wrapped the cord around the pulley and gave a tug. You and I are going to have to sit down and compare notes one fine day. The parallels in the "junk" we own are simply uncanny. I am posting from Estevan, Saskatchewan tonight. On my way to an event in St. Louis, MO. Stringer Davis can probably guess what that event is. He's certainly lasted longer than I thought, but it's only August. He has to win an early state or people will desert him. Trump's advantage is his disadvantage: he's entertaining. The Chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee sent letters today to the presidents of 161 public colleges and universities across the country to ask them why their policies fail to protect the First Amendment rights of students and faculty. The letters were sent by Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) to leaders of institutions that received the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education's (FIRE's) lowest, "red light" rating in our annual report on campus speech codes. Colleges that receive this rating maintain at least one policy that clearly and substantially restricts protected speech. The letters follow FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff's testimony before Congress earlier this summer. On June 2, Lukianoff testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice about the state of free speech on America's public college campuses.
