29 From the sidebar:

30 Odd question, but any Roman Catholics here from the Raleigh, NC?

I ask because of a poster from yesterday whose name escapes me. I was thinking about him a lot (and if he's here I greet him). He said that he was a convert to the RCC and and was saying that it has all gotten about identity politics and social justice and not, I'm guessing, so much about what he converted for . He also mentions that all of the RC Churches in NC are that way to one extent or another. So this was what I was thinking. If there are people from RC churches near Raleigh, why couldn't you se the priest if you could form a prayer/bible study group. You wouldn't have to say it's for conservatives, but you could al get together and pray and study Scripture-maybe Acts or the Gospel of John which talk a lot about persecution or Phillippians about being Joyful whatever the circumstances. Maybe you could go to Mass Together? That way whatever leftist politics might come out in the sermon you're still taking the eucharist together? You could also gather in someone's home for study/prayer

I know we occasionally have these morons meet ups but that seems to be about having a few drinks, conversation and laughs. Why couldn't people who are religious all over get together to pray and to plan strategies for action?

Just some thoughts. Sorry if sounds rambling.
Also, if the churches are not spiritually oriented enough are there any good RC retreat centers. They often offer programs on spiritual disciplines.
Christians we do need to put on the full armor of God.

My parents did that throughout my childhood. They had 4-5 couples plus themselves, and they would switch each weekend (as I recall, I was young), and a priest would come. I have no clue what they talked about, I should ask my parents. We always had to go to our rooms when they all came over.

All the families were friends with ours, including the children. We did things together outside of that.

It was nice.

Ref to Ace's post from yesterday? Been thinking a lot about it. Clearly he spent a lot of time thinking about it, and I basically agree with what he wrote, but some things relevant to the situation here were left unsaid. It's Ace's site, and if he doesn't want to say them, it's his business.

Given the rifts in the GOP, though, which are profound and highly visible even at this site, I think the party can't be saved. The two sides may choose to stay together for the kids until the day after the election, but absent some major rethinking from both sides, a divorce seems inevitable.

Well, i don't know if you're a person of religious faith, but Paul who spent a good deal of time in prison and wrote the Epistle of Joy (Phillipians) while in prison elsewhere in Ephesians talks about putting on the full armor of God so I'd say he was a happy or content warrior. I understand it. I also think it probably can't be self generated or can't be sustained that way, but Paul was not thinking of carnal warfare.

88 I just did a quick read of the BB piece about Erik Erikson challenging Rush over Trump. The Trump effect is supposedly based on the idea that Trump is a fighter. I have serious doubts about what Trump will fight for. He'll fight to get elected, but once in office I predict that he would collude with the ruling elite over a lot of the same stuff because he's part of the elite. He might get a few things he's talking about - stronger border contols and a tougher foreign policy - but he'd probably agree on a lot of other crap I don't like.

IOW, I'm not convinced he'll end up fighting for the things I want him to fight for.

Criticizing candidates on their policies and actions is fair game, and always should be, especially when we have so many seemingly lacking in veracity and whose words and deeds are so much at odds with each other. Yapping about them because you don't like their hair, voices or attitudes is something else altogether.

Personally, I'm all for EE heading back to Mom's Basement and taking up gaming. The fat little f*ck is in WAY over his head.

Yeah. It's a weird position. The Democrats went full mental case so now they can define the rules according to their instant version of fact-free reality. Any logical argument is met with venom, scorn and spit.

The conservatives feel like cornered animal , surrounded by insane, evil enemies. They voted in GOP representatives twice in order to do battle with their enemies but the GOP has made nice , cushy , profitable alliances with the people attacking conservatism and conservatives.

How do you trust anything that comes out of the GOP ?

How do you remain 'civil' in the face of a world view base on emotional instability and insanity?

How do you spar fairly with an opponent that ALWAYS hits below the belt?

How do you negotiate with progressive terrorists?

.
.Definitely laminate. I used to be the number two guy installing hardwood floors and let me tell you they are a thing of beauty when done right. But they require at least bi-annual buff and coats to continue to shine. That is a PITA. Moving furniture every other year especially in our old house where the entire house was complete hardwood. We would have to move everything the the garage to do a proper buff and coat.

We have laminate in our new house and it is nearly impervious to water and dogs. Quick mop and it looks like new. It does scratch, but that takes a lot to happen.

..........
Stay away from lumber liquidators.. they've been sued over the chemicals used in their flooring.. their crap is made in China and the glues used can leach out.. Make sure you get made in America..

Aside form that, solid hardwood is pretty much the same price as engineered, but you only get a thin veneer of real wood on top. The only advantage of engineered is sometime you can find it in a quick click version for installing on slabs. If you have wood subflooring, solid hardwood is the best way to go if you can afford it.

Our flooring guy won't sell bamboo.. he says he's had too many problems with it over the years with shrinking and expanding from summer to winter.

Why? Do you think they'll go third party.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

Nope.

JJ and I were discussing this . There was a meeting in NYC between Cruz and Trump a couple of weeks ago.

Cruz , while a conservative hero, has basically been ostracized by the GOP/e . I can't remember ever hearing a GOP candidate attacking a fellow party Congressional member , let alone Senate Majority leader during a campaign speech like Cruz did to McConnell. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway , Cruz got really ticked off over the whole Ex Im bank thing, which basically is yet another Uniparty source of funding.

Without pandering to progs and prog donors, Cruz is still a decent fundraiser and has done pretty well.

I think that he and Trump know that it is going to take a combination of an epic war chest (Trump's) and serious conservative bona fides that people will actually trust (Cruz) to take this thing back from the Progs. I think that a deal was struck in NYC. The one who polls worst gets the VP bid.

Ego clash? Oh yeah, you bet. But it is pragmatic. VP is better than bowing out like Rick Perry.

Trump's money may be the only thing that can get an actual conservative past the GOP establishment party gatekeepers.

The other thing that turned me off was the disgusting obscene vitriol tuned on Palin "I'd F*** on a flag while I held my hand over her mouth" It got worse from there. Fundamentally I don't see all that much difference between the expression of this and people who go on in detail about Hillary's breasts, "cooter, and an** i don't like Hillary. I don't like her politics, her utter corruption or her self serving power, hungry nature. I think she is a tool of evil forces. However, she's a human being. It depends on your state, you would have to get in contact with the state Board of Education to see what is required. Mrs Hades is an elementary teacher, here in NC all you need is a BA (which means she's overqualified) but I think it's a BA in education, not in a specific field, for elementary. Other states require a Masters, some require a degree in the field you are going to be teaching in AND a degree in education (but I think that's only for High School).

Good luck Bob, we need teachers that aren't screaming lefties.

189 Trying to figure out what to do with this stupid tiny problem but doing nothing makes it blow up for no reason.

Young woman dinged my car. I have a white 2006 Outback with a cherry body that I still owe on, since I got it used.

The damage is actually minor. Rear bumper, but it involved the hard plastic which cannot be repaired [got dimpled] and a dime-sized spot on the bumper itself - where the paint broke and metal is exposed. The bumper is minimally rippled, too. PITA

Anyway, since it was at work I had to file an incident report and make the claim. Her insurer will cover all repairs. Comes to little over 600 becuz they want to replace the entire bumper, 2 days work with a loaner gratis.

OK. To my mind, I could just get somebody who knows what they're doing and use filler, paint and buffer and it's done. Who cares about dimpled plastic? Pocket the difference.

Reason its problematic: The spot is at an edge/overhang. Plus, paint-matching.

I'm not an expert, but, I looked into it a few years ago. Generally, you can get teaching jobs at private schools more easily b/c most don't require a teaching certificate. They also tend to pay far less than public schools. But, if you can work and work on getting a certificate, you would be in a much stronger position applying at a public school w/teaching experience on your resume. Also, it helps a shit ton if you know someone inside.

I actually looked into this about ten years ago. Like Dack said, each state is different. Virginia has a program especially designed for career switchers who have experience in fields the schools need. Yep, apparently there's an issue with people graduating with education degrees but no actual knowledge of what they are supposed to be teaching. Odd, huh?

Anyway, I had several irons in the career fire and I was pursuing this while seeing if anything else I had pending would pan out. Mainly I had to take a pair of competency tests (one showing prowess in the written word, one a knowledge/skills test for the subject), and there was a short (like three month) classroom course to take. After all that, I would then be eligible to receive a teachers license and get a gig.

I went through the competency tests (only missed one question on the skills test, some dumb question about Maya Angelou) and enrolled for the classroom when I received a job offer for a field I really wanted to be in. So I abandoned the teaching stuff.

Other states may have similar programs....

Where do you live, Bob's House?

If you're in Texas, look at an alternative certification program. The one with which I'm familiar (both my mom and brother used it) is T-MATE (or something like that) through Tarleton State University. You have to find a sponsor-school, but basically you go to school in the summers to get your teaching certificate (2 summers, with the certification test at the end), and work for X years (at base pay for the state, I'm sure) for that school.

So you'll go to school one summer, then work for your sponsor school the next year, then go to school and take your cert test the next summer, and then I think most schools require you to work for them 2 or 3 more years.

At the end, you'll not only have your teaching certificate, but you'll have 3 or 4 years of experience - in case you want to leave that school or district and move elsewhere.

Might want to check on that, I had lots of credits towards an AS/EE degree but none of them would count since they were all 10 years old or older.

219 Yep, apparently there's an issue with people graduating with education
degrees but no actual knowledge of what they are supposed to be
teaching. Odd, huh?

An education degree is fine for Elementary since you aren't really teaching a single subject in depth, just establishing the basics.

220 The fifties --- although they were long before my time -- starting to look pretty good. Government spending at 20% of GDP (not 40). No EPA. No Department of Education, or HUD. Half the current US population.

"Operation Wetback." Says it all, for me. Mister, we could use a man like Eisenhower again.

David Halberstam's The Fifties is a good overview of the era, if you can ignore the author's default leftist bias. And Bill Bryson's The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is a nice memoir of growing up in 1950s Des Moines, thankfully free of his usual I-hate-Ronald-Reagan-and-Margaret-Thatcher schtick.

If you ever get a big cave in the plastic work common in so many cars, you can soften the plastic w/a heat gun and push it out from the inside, assuming you can get to it. I salvaged an Impala that had an entire corner punched in. Just touched it w/ a bit of white paint.

That's the important issue. I've run into MAs who needed teacher's certs for no good reason. It's also important to consider what schools you'd want to teach at, public is most restrictive, private and parochial less so. Parochial pays least, if that's an issue, but you may very well be able to contact the local diocese or whatever and ask them if they can get you working. Probably, they'd set you up as an admin, but its a foot in the door and a good one.

I spent a little time this morning reading through the civility thread from yesterday. I think where Ace gets it wrong - or at least, doesn't think it through enough - is in his insistence that there is more to life than politics. The problem is that, today, there isn't. The left has hijacked so many institutions and installed their policies into so many areas of life (smoking bans, anyone?) that to disengage from politics is a preemptive surrender to the leftist agenda. We want to live our lives, but they do not want us to, unless it be on their terms.

I'll admit, I'm a beaker full of either blinding anger or outright depression in my daily life, and places like this exacerbate it. Not that I'm blaming Ace or the Horde for my own psychological fuckery, but the constant litany of leftist overreach, SJW scalp-hunting and backstabbing by putative political allies makes me red with rage. And it's no good, really, to say, "well, go away for a while and get back your mojo," because, once you're tuned in to the political world, you realize you can't go away - the State and its thugs will come after you, whether you're a full-up-dues-paying member of the Horde or the laziest lo-fo mofo in the USA.

I could go on, but I don't want to bore anyone any more than I already have. But I hope you understand where I - and I think, a lot of us - are coming from. And I really think this sense of being trapped is why Teh Donald is getting his support.

Amazing they're having almost the same holy shit what's going on that we are over Yeb Bush.

265 Bob's House of Flannel -

Call your local Dept of Ed, tell them you're thinking of becoming a second-career teacher and ask them what you need to do. Everyplace will be different, but your local Ed Dept will know what you need to do and if there are any programs to help you transition. I looked into becoming a teacher about ten years ago. My county was teaming up with Johns Hopkins to offer a Masters in Ed in exchange for a three-year commitment to teach in the county. They analyzed my undergrad transcripts and recommended I become an ESL teacher (no surprise since I had taken French/Spanish/Italian courses in college). At the time, they were not accepting anybody for elementary ed because there wasn't a projected need for that.

Had I entered the program the ed classes would have been taught evenings/weekends over two years, allowing you to keep your day job until it was time for student teaching. Apparently that was a big enough impediment for a lot of people because the following year you were guaranteed a stipend during the student teacher months. I ultimately decided against doing it because I knew too many teachers who were frustrated and getting out. But my point is, your area may have a similar recruitment program.

Getting the courts to legalize abortion wasn't enough; they had to make abortion opponents finance all those abortions they object to, by having congress fund abortion mill Planned Parenthood with hundreds of millions of tax dollars every year.

285 Question for linux / ubuntu users - what do you do fir anti virus before you get on net?

Don't run any services you don't need. This means that if you're not actually using ssh to connect to your computer from the outside world, disable sshd. I dunno, it used to be simpler back in the sysV init days, cos you just had to check /etc/init.d/ to see what was being launched at boot.

Use NoScript when running a web browser.

Don't install flash or moonlight or java (JRE) unless you absolutely need these for something.

Don't use google chrome.

Every once in a while (say once a week or so) run rkhunter.

Mint has a combination of a gui Software Manager (like Ubuntu), but also has a companion gui Update Manager that checks your version against the current repository version and recommends the update set (but prioritized and listed rather neatly) so you can update all or skip stuff you think you will never need or use.

You can also use apt-get.

My interpretation is that ace gets tired of all the constant nastiness. He does this from time to time. Not too surprising, the internet is nothing if not constantly nasty.

But we, the lowly commentariat, can log off and go do other things when we have had enough. I periodically take mini-sabaticals when it gets too much. Ace can't really do that, it's his job to live with this constantly.

Erick's words say one thing. His disinvitation to Trump based on personal grievances is a emotionally-driven lefty move that is no different from yelling 'I hate you, bitch'.

Which is why he is and shall remain an amateur , over-his-head, small-timer.

Think Ace was arguing for being a bit more selective with the preemptive "Hey dumbass..."

Agree that some "nominally on 'our' side" should get this message as well!

363 I could go on, but I don't want to bore anyone any more than I already have. But I hope you understand where I - and I think, a lot of us - are coming from. And I really think this sense of being trapped is why Teh Donald is getting his support.

Oy, I just saw this. Was afk for a long while.

I get your points.

I still seek out the good, and find goodness in people and my surroundings, my family, friends.

I only have one life, and I'll be darned if anyone will make it a bad one. Life is hard enough without the left's agenda creeping into our lives.

The piece I linked above, about the old man who was saddened/ashamed/embarrassed, or whatever by his house, and 100 or so people came together to redo it for him is a bright spot. There are so many more. The news will not typically expose them tho.

364 My interpretation is that ace gets tired of all the constant nastiness.

Teh Twitters will eat your brain.

365 @FenelonSpoke

I know we occasionally have these morons meet ups but that seems to be about having a few drinks, conversation and laughs. Why couldn't people who are religious all over get together to pray and to plan strategies for action?

How about virtual meet-ups? There's good, free meeting software available and we're not limited to a particular location.

366 For the second time this morning, have a nice day y'all. I'm done.

370 This is why I differ with Ace when he gets all "oooh! Let's be Civil and compromise"-y. You cannot compromise with the leftoids or GOPe, unless you're willing to accept their definition of the word as meaning "you do it MY way and we'll get along."
_______________________

Yep. Compromise is not possible with people who demand that everything, always, be on their terms.

Yesterday there were reports about how the Obama administration has been threatening states that are looking into ways to ban state funds from going to Planned Parenthood. The administration warned the states not to take any action against PP, or they will be subject to prosecution since "they will be violating federal law!"

Suddenly, the Obama administration has a new respect for federal law. Federal law must be obeyed -- and if you don't obey, they will use federal law to destroy you. Now the fact that the Obama administration has itself been violating numerous federal laws since Obama took office in 2009 is of no consequence here. The law is simply another tool for Obama and the left to use to beat you into submission. The left can pick and choose which laws they will ignore or openly violate (e.g., sanctuary cities, IRS targeting, etc.) with impunity. But if anybody else violates a law, they will be destroyed -- because the law must be obeyed!

But we're supposed to play nice and compromise with these people? They're like Islamists: their idea of "compromise" is complete and total submission to their agenda.

I say screw them. I won't surrender my freedom, nor will I stand meekly by while these fascist dickwads try to steal it from me. We are in an existential war here, and I know which side I'm on.

371 A perp leaves the front of the house on foot at 7 mph. The homeowner loads one round every 1.2 seconds for a total of 10 bullets in his limited capacity tube magazine. ATV travels at 22 mph. How long is the driveway?

Texas modified Common Core curriculum:

Extra credit, how far does the perp get when using a 190gr 30-30 round at 2000fps vs a 165gr 30-30 at 2400fps. You must approx stagger time for the lighter round. Assume hard cast lead, not jacketed rounds. How far away is your good neighbor with a back hoe if he can get there in 25min?

372 Thanks for the suggestions, my peeps. Appreciated. Let's see where this goes.
