5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, August 06, 2015. On this day in 1819 Norwich University was founded in Vermont as the first private military school in the United States. If you have ever read any W.E.B. Griffin military novels you will get familiar with Norwich.

7 Morons if you are ever going to NYC or NJ leave your guns at home. Neither place recognizes the second amendment. But better yet, don't go to these two shitty places at all. Charleston is a much better city to visit than NYC anyway. Besides; it is a proven fact that places with strict gun control laws are the most dangerous places in the country.

10 16 States have asked Obama to put his insane and illegal coal plant rules on hold. Why do I say they are illegal, because the EPA has never provided any scientific basis for them as required by law. That has become common for their lawless behavior. But they are wasting their time, he has vowed to destroy coal which when he entered office supplied 50% of the country's generation. These rules are headed to court anyway. He has already lost his insane Hg rules.

11 The bipartisan panel investigating the IRS's illegal targeting of conservatives gets a whitewash. The Republicans pussed out. This was illegal as hell and should have been called that. It was not a mistake, it was intentional and it was directed by the WH. Nixon was about to be impeached for this crap. But alas, the Constitution and impeachment is lying in a pool of vomit at the feet of the goddess of law.

14 A federal appeals court has struck down the TX photo voter ID law. The Supreme Court has upheld these laws as long as certain conditions are met. And they are NOT discriminatory except for voters who are trying to apply vote fraud. I guess they will have to go to the Supremes. They used the BS disparate impact excuse. Even if disparate impact was a valid legal theory, evidence has shown that there is no impact. In SC when photo ID went into effect black voting INCREASED.

My guess is that the wannabes will all be hot 'n' heavy of bashing teh Donald. No doubt their handlers have told them they have to prove their johnsons are bigger than his, so I expect a lot of Trump-bashing ("he has no experience like weeee do!" "he's not a Nice Man!" etc.) while the real traitors and felons like Choom Boy and Shrillery get ignored.

Of course they will not emulate Trump's directness and honest statements. That would be going to far for a politician.

1. Will Kasich's anti-schizophrenia medication last the entire night?

2. Will Kasich tell his handlers he is wearing the same Garanimals underwear as that day in 4th grade when he defeated the schoolyard bully?

3. Who gets the Cecil the Lion question?

4. Will they let the audience drink? Drinking leads to cheering and generally over all more interesting debates, and orgies, too, I've found.

84 oh good

instapundit (or maybe Vic brought it up above..)

WELL, GOOD: Navy: No charges against officer for weapons violations in Chattanooga attack. "Lt. Cmdr. Tim White, the Navy officer who fired a sidearm in defense during the attack on Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., will not face charges, an official familiar with the investigation told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday. White was reported to be one of two servicemembers carrying sidearms at the time of the attack, which could have led to charges. The Department of Defense prohibits all military personnel other than security forces from carrying arms while on base unless they are in a combat zone."

I suspected this, but you never know these days.

Now change the stupid policy.

Hehe. from pjmedia's roger simon

I'll deal with the undercard first because it's a bit sad. I don't think anybody on the undercard is going to go very far in the election after Thursday except Carly Fiorina, but as a vice-presidential candidate, alas. I say "alas" because Carly has been the most articulate candidate from either party so far by a significant amount, in my view. She's certainly the best at answering questions, for what that's worth, which admittedly isn't everything. (Obama has made me skeptical about whether good campaigners make good presidents. They seem totally different skills. Some have both, but not many.) Nevertheless, I'd like to see Carly in the next administration and I know I'm not alone. But I don't know what she could say on Thursday that would improve her lot that she hasn't already said. Maybe a bigger audience will help, but being on the undercard doesn't help with that. (BTW, apropos Carly, according to a just-released study from Grammarly, Fiorina's Facebook fans have the best grammar, spelling and punctuation of all Republican candidates at only 6.3 errors per 100 words. Trump's fans came in last at 12.6 errors per hundred words.)

two points

1 - yes, fingers crossed Carly comes out of this 2nd tier "debate" on top (from what I've seen so far, I like her)
2 - he's right about being skeptical of good debaters. I mentioned this yesterday, it's a rare bird to have both great communication skills AND the leadership skills required or expertise required, etc. I've noticed over the years that many that bubble to top are just good BS'ers, and that's it. They have a certain level of intelligence or skills, but their talking is what pushes them forward.

Romney was a perfect example. Among many other reasons for his failure, he sucked at debating. He may be a good leader or manager, but debating?

Please Cruz, show us your stuff tonight and here on out.

Romney annihilated Obama in their first debate. But that was because his son and wife begged him to, and afterward his aides convinced him to just run down the clock.

Ok, now you have piqued my curiosity. I know graphite 'moderates' neutrons, (fast neutrons?) but I don't know what happens to the graphite. If it has been exposed to a high level of neutrons in a reactor core. . .

Well, hell Vic knows.

From the wiki, carbon-14 decays to nitrogen by emitting a beta particle which would be easily blocked by the lucite. So could be 'from' the core when it was dismantled. I assume it was eventually dismantled.

(Which is why first assumptions have to be re-examined as more data is accumulated.)

Pardon my verbosity, I must still be drunk from last night. At least I didn't reach stage two which is 'bellicose'. That would be a bad thing.

I dreamed last night that the missus and I were at some sort of solo performance by an artist playing an instrument. Y'know, a stereotypical gathering of tweedy lefties smugly admiring the "artistry" of the performer.

Anyway, the missus had brought along an instrument case from which came, at regular intervals, the sound of a ball bearing rolling around. This went on for a while until, finally, one of the tweedy lefties in the audience turned to us/her and said, "Time for you to go."

At which point, the missus opened the case which contained the same instrument as the artist was playing and a glass tube from which the supply of small ball bearings had been falling. As I pushed back in the loose cork which had allowed the bearings to escape, the missus responded to the demand that we leave with, "Why, because I have her very own instrument?"

Civilization advances whenever advances in energy make it more abundant and less expensive. The opposite is true when energy is less available and more expensive.

If we want to bring back manufacturing, develop new industries and increase the quality of life for everyone, we should shoot for a goal of unlimited electrical power that is too cheap to meter.

This is easily achieved with nuclear power, but due to regulation, liability, waste and the old practice of building nuke plants as one-off prototypes, the government and anti-nuke interest groups have blocked progress.

Nuclear power is one of the few things that need government intervention, just because of the nature of the fuel. Overnight, the government can make 500 sites available that can't be stopped for years in lawsuits. With the stroke of a pen, all the waste and liability issues can be waived. With one decision, a single design can be established so that all the components could be manufactured at a fraction of the normal cost.

With a dispersed group of 500 reactors producing more power than the country can use, new industries that are power intensive would spring up. It would make no sense to have a steel, aluminum or other metals plant anywhere but the U.S. Heavy manufacturing that rely on energy like forging and casting would be far cheaper in the U.S. than anywhere else.

Just like the highway system, providing a national electrical supply would benefit everyone.

Here's your stimulus.

Our cable provider reassigned something like 900 channels and now it takes ten minutes to figure out what channel any show in on. Numerous people have told me they aren't even turning on the television because they miss the first ten minutes, get mad, and turn it back off. Scrolling through also infuriates since 450 of the channels are in Spanish. The channel "guide" is approximately 18" by 30" (with teeny-tiny print) so looking at it while trying to hold a remote control is like driving with a map in front of your face. The people who can afford the $200 per month cable lineup are very unhappy. We made an index card with the 7-8 channels we watch and are close to having them memorized. HD are mixed in with non-HD, crap channels are scattered everywhere from the 100's to the 800's and most are ready to drop all of it.

Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at August 06, 2015 07:52 AM (oVJmc)

No, but he had a brain fart about putting a webcam out in space that people could watch and it would make them all environmentally conscious. So he told NASA to make a satellite to do that. Hunnert mil or two later, satellite gets benched because it's stupid (and the Repubs wanted to rub Gore's nose in a pile of hanging chads). Fast forward to Barky's election, satellite gets pulled out of storage, refitted, and launched.

Funny thing is, back in the 90's when Gore came up with the idea, a kid I had gone to high school with wrote a program for Macs that automatically found the latest weather satellite pics, stitched them into a globe, and made it the computer's desktop wallpaper. Program was selling for a few tens of dollars. I mean, why spend the same as a decent dinner when you could spend half a billion, right?

I think the early debate is going to be the one to watch. They have been relegated, not just to second tier but, essentially to the waste bin of debates: standard business hours. Yet, there are some talented and interesting candidates in the lineup. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Fiorina emerge as a star.

The top tier debate is full of bullshit artists and will be a dog and pony show, full of rhetoric and lacking in substance. Most will emerge the worse for wear and will never get back up again.

In the end, we'll get to see the best of each debate challenge each other and that should be a good debate.

My wife calls the channel guide the Cheesecake Factory menu. She brought an Ott light into the great room so we can try to read it with our glasses on.

237 I dreamed last night that the missus and I were at some sort of solo performance by an artist playing an instrument.

...repressed homosexuality.

I dreamed I was driving one of those giant bus-cum-motorhomes retirees drive into West Virginia to visit Vladimir Putin.

...repressed homosexuality.

I also dreamed that I was one of the Waltons, but grandpa Walton was Harry Morgan instead of that commie faggot Will Gear, and Mary Ellen had eloped with a black guy.

...repressed homosexuality

I had a dream that took place in the Thomas the Tank Engine universe, but like in Toys they could only move and talk when people were not around.

...yep, repressed homosexuality.

238 Silverman? Not funny.

Schumer? I like her sketch comedy. Clearly much of it is team-derived as so many other comedians and writers contribute.

But, wow, is she thin-skinned. For a vulgar, skanky comedian, she does not take criticism well. You'd think she'd be rather tough given her material and industry. Apparently the acceptable criticism of people only goes one way.

After discussing her skanky character in the movie, and the fact that her character was deliberately dressed in a skanky way to make you feel "uncomfortable," she takes offense at a Penis Monster asking her if they have the word "skanky" in America.

Could have been worse - he could have called her a "scrunt".

242 By the way, if you examine Zinn's book you'll notice that there are zero footnotes.

That should tell you that this nasty piece of work belongs next to such "brilliance" as "Mein Kampf."

The man admitted he lied in the book and that history doesn't have to be factual. I would never purchase one of his "histories."

244 We need to kick the JEF out of office now and give each republican candidate a month to show us his/her chops.

The debate rules are that if anyone "attacks" another candidate the one "attacked" gets 30 seconds to respond. They either stay away from Trump or he has the stage for the entire night. I think Fox and the RNC came up with these rules before Trump. The rules were probably written for mushy Jeb! but it has backfired.

This is hhow I hope the debate goes down...
It starts off normal enough. Suddenly Trumps hair scurries across the stage and jumps on Jeb's face. Rand Paul tries to pull it off but it bites his finger off so he screams and backs away. Cruz picks up a laptop and begins beating the hairy thing attached to Jeb's face until it falls off and latches on to Ted's leg. He runs in circles while Huck cries "oh the humanity!" and Walker makes his move. He beats the thing with a mic stand until it lets go of Ted's leg but by now Donald is trying to get his hair under control and tackles Scott. The hair jumps back on Donald's head but it is on backwards. Kasich laughs but is punched in the face by Trump.
Ben Carson slowly backs off stage never to be seen again. Rubio stands there with his mouth agape but manages to sputter "goobsih" whilst Christie eats all of the donuts while no one is watching.
Carly runs in fixes the laptop and the debate continues.
