Overnight Open Thread (31 Jul 2015)

I guess tonight's ONT is a once in a blue moon edition!

Bonus celestial viewing tonight. You can also try to catch the Delta Aquarids. Best time to view is after midnight and there are about 20 per hour. Don't forget to put your pants back on if you go outside to view.

Scottish Research

Study finds drinking may ease chronic widespread pain. Well d'uh!

South America

This does not bode well for our border. The South American financial crisis of 2015.

13 Hours

I'm leery of any movie that involves Michael Bay but hope that they stay true to the source material. However, Ace posted earlier that it largely avoids any of the political decision making (or lack thereof) back in DC. Did Hollywood take care to do that with the many anti-Bush Iraq war movies? Anyway, here's the red band trailer.

Bias Free Language Guide

Hahaha. I guess the University of New Hampshire is learning that the internet is forever as they try to disappear their bias free language guide.

Preferred: U.S. citizen or Resident of the U.S.
Problematic: American
Note: North Americans often use "American" which usually, depending on the context, fails to recognize South America.

May as well stick to American as they're coming here in droves anyway. See earlier story on the South American economy.

Literary Road Trips

Pretty cool. Map of literary road trips.

News Fails

According to one of the clips, Amazon has more earnings than Walmart because they sell sex toys.

Cable Boxes

Cable companies refuse to reveal how much they make off of set-top boxes. FIOS is starting to piss me off. One of their remotes for a box that I have to pay a monthly fee on is starting to loss function in a few buttons. I called them and wanted to swap out the remote for a new one and they informed me that I have to purchase one. Seriously?

Hacking

Hackers can disable a sniper rifle, or change its target. If it connects to the internet, it is hackable.

Dogs vs Feathers

Democrat Dilemma

If Democrats don't have Jefferson and Jackson, who's left?

I had that little talk with a snotty Euro brat one summer in The Hague. I had to remind him that "United Statesian" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as a demonym, and that everyone knows perfectly well what we mean. That and the little shit was still using 'anti-American" to mean "anti-US" so he might want to think about some consistency. To his credit, he conceded publicly that I was right and was a good little dooby at work for the rest of the summer.

And they breathalyze you at work too.

My Captain brought in some home made rum cake at the Christmas brunch last year at work. It was pretty potent so shits and giggles, we broke out the breathalyzer and tested it after having a few bites of cake. We were reading .13 BAC levels!!! It dropped back to zero after about 20 minutes. Listerine strips affect the readings too.

If Democrats don't have Jefferson and Jackson, whos left?

Martin Van Buren
James K. Polk
Franklin Pierce
James Buchanan
Andrew Johnson
Grover Cleveland
Woodrow Wilson
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Harry S. Truman
John F. Kennedy
Lyndon B. Johnson
Jimmy Carter
Bill Clinton
Barack H. Obama

Note: 2 impeachements on that list.

Polk is out -- Mexican-American War, as is Johnson II for Vietnam. Johnson I out for being anti-Reconstruction. Buchanan out for pre-Civil War compromises.

Which leaves -- Happy Obama's Birthday!

Posted by: TBD at July 31, 2015 10:54 PM (WMjoK)

173 I got willowed in the last thread, and perhaps everyone but me knew this a few hours ago, but I'm repeating for posterity:

245 I haven't seen this mentioned here yet, but in somewhat breaking news from Allan West, Redstate, and CNN, Center for Medical Progress leader David Daleiden says that StemExpress is trying to suppress the release involving them because StemExpress sometimes receives fully intact aborted babies.

Apparently their concern is that this might be construed as evidence that babies are born alive, killed or allowed to die, then shipped off for experiments.

Daleiden also says that CMP will release an additional 8 to 10 videos.

http://bit.ly/1MCUNrT

So what's the over/under that Planned Parenthood and StemExpress actually talk about babies bring born alive? Yesterday's video seemed to leave that possibility open.

The problem is not one of encroaching evil so much as the terminology being exposed for the evil bullshit it has always been. A baby is a baby is a baby, and cutting them up or letting them die is a mightily despicable thing to do.

An Alaskan confronted a Texan in a bar.

We have more timber in Alaska than you, we have more oil, we have better fishing and hunting...hell, if we wanted to we could take all the gold in Alaska and build a wall clean around Texas. I do not get the impression that Trump has the country's best interests at heart. I think he is just trying to make the biggest splash possible. We take what the establishment gives us, we get Jeb. Jeb loses to Hillary in a two-way race; I guarantee it. Nothing changes after that; it's just business as usual.

If Trump runs third-party, we get Jeb, Trump and Hillary in a three-way race. I think Trump's odds are better than you do in that case, but let's just say Hillary wins.

How is that result different from a Jeb vs. Hillary two-way race?

The only way it's different is in a good way... Jeb comes in third, and the Republican party is forced to adapt or fade into the history books.

As far as I've read, he's about the only candidate who hasn't thrown bombs at Trump. He's also a bit of a firebrand and bomb thrower himself.

He's actually been criticized for cozying up to Trump. I think he's positioning himself to give Trump supporters a place to go if/when Trump flames out.

Question.... who was the President who presided over the Largest increase in Government size in the US's History? ie, the DHS?

That would be... a Bush... a Republican...

Who started the NSA spying on all Americans??? Bush...

Who started the EPA??? that would be Nixon... a Republican... and look how that has turned out...

Who started the Education Dept? bill passed under Carter... but actually started under Reagan... who could have killed it if he wished.

Obama wants a bigger government so it can screw with us.... the Republican Party wants a bigger government so it can control us....

I can see that.

I think Perry went hard after the guy getting the most pub. Some referred publicity. But I think he went a step too far. You criticize him hard and fast and then you get back on message. You get back to jobs and border security and the rest of it and you ignore whatever Trump is doing.

Take your shot, get yourself on the news and then use that exposure to put your ideas out there.

366 #342:

Single payer health care: Boehner and McConnell twisted arms to ensure Obamacare remains fully funded.

Higher tax rates across the board: gas, capital gains, income: I'll give you this one, but I'll point out that Republicans are really only in favor of lower taxes because that's how the Chamber of Commerce wants it.

Gun control: Harry Reid never let a gun control bill come up for a vote, either.

Free college for all: Bernie Sanders is the only prominent Democrat calling for this, and he trails Hillary by a whole lot in the Dem primary polls.

Free abortions for all: Boehner will fight tooth and nail to keep Planned Parenthood funded with taxpayer dollars, because his chief aide's sister works for them. Look at his response when he made a show of trying to pass a little "common-sense abortion control" and a single Republican congresswoman balked. He pulled the bill, and there were no repercussions for Elmers. It's not like she oppoesed him on something he actually cared about, you know.

I can't remember who, but someone said the guy who gets elected President is usually the guy who the most unlike the guy who preceded him. That's not always true (Bush I was in fact quite different than Reagan, but he wasn't perceived that way in 1988. I think that election was seen as a further endorsement of Reagan and desire to carry on Reagan's policies. The guy most unlike Reagan in that race was clearly Michael "Tank" Dukakis.)

If it's generally true though, there's probably no candidate more unlike Barry than vanilla, Kohl's shopping Walker. Try to picture him dining with interesting Italians, or tying up Manhattan traffic on a Friday because it's "date night" for him and Tonette.

427 Mets dramatic win tonight in the 12th...

On Wednesday night, Wilmer Flores thought he was traded to the Brewers but was kept in the game, tears streaming down his face. Turns out that the media jumped the gun and never confirmed the trade with the Mets front office. After getting a standing ovation from the fans to say goodbye. Then at the press conference GM Sandy Alderson tells the media that Flores was left in the game because not only was there no trade, there would not be a trade. Told the media that in this day of social media they should be more careful about what they report.

Tonight's big game against the Nationals, the game is in the 12th inning and who should hit a walkoff homer to win the game but the very same Wilmer Flores who thought he'd been traded to nights before.

Good for Flores - I really thought it was a dick move at the time, to keep him in the game.

I think the trade to the Astros was a good move, although I will really miss Gogo. It was fun watching him play. He had 3 All Star years with us.

Now we are stuck with the dismal Logan Schafer in CF and we're missing Carlos already..but it had to be done.

469 I think you're right about this pending Verizon acquistion, QDPSteve; that is the general way of things. A successful company is bought out by another company, and the new owner wants as quick a return on the investment as possible, since they have stockholders to please, so prices go up and quality of service goes down.

Thanks for the warning! I'll have to see what AT ampersand T will offer me if I choose to leave Verizon for them. I have a good history as a customer with AT ampersand T, thanks to three years of owning a 3G PSVita.

I'm wondering. So the baby butchers got an injunction to prevent the release of the video showing Stem Express personnel haggling over baby parts, right?

Why not simply re-make the video, with an actor/actress playing the Stem Express role? Ham it up, dress him/her in a Satan mask wearing a Che T-shirt, but use every single word of the dialog from the transcript of the real video, no more, no less. Have an introduction by a CMP honcho, explaining that a totally honest Democrat judge (air quotes, big eye roll) issued an injunction against the release of the real video, so it was necessary to issue a place-holder.

501 Also re tape/film:

I think I've talked about this before, but I enjoy the topic because I'm something of a video expert and amateur filmmaker.

Anyone here hear of the RED Camera (made by Oakley, of all people) or 4K cameras? Anyway, there's been a movement now for at least 10 years to build video systems that have the *exact same amount of resolution* of film (or even more than film). On top of that the prices are coming down; a decent 4k video camera can now be had for less than $3k.

When the RED camera first came out about 10 years ago, and was first made available for studio rental, it almost immediately completely replaced Panavision Camera rentals in Hollywood immediately. Which was smart as the cameras themselves then cost (and can still go up to) around $50k each, *without* accessories.

515 Back to Debbie Wasserman for a sec.

Her deflection and fallback to her talking point, "Extemists!!11!1" is expected, and when you think about it, is all they can say right now. I am sure the DNC is channeling the same meme to every soldier in the lineup.

And they all have the MSM fully on board with this line, so we will hear it repeated a lot.

Extremists.

Overplaying their hand.

Anti-(insert soft words here like "choice," or "health," or "services," or "prevention."

You know the drill. And it will get shrill.

Debbie is a good commandant, a good soldier, a good leader. She is right on cue.

That's their message, and watch, it will keep running, its clarity will be enhanced, refined, and repeated until you'll feel it in the air.

That way the only blood (or other bodily fluids) youll ever be exposed to... are your own.

539 Don't worry what the polls say right now.

Back in the summer of 2007, the 2008 matchup was going to be Hillary vs Rudy.

Right now is 6 months from an actual vote being tallied, and the whole landscape will change from today until then.

Also, the caucuses in Iowa and the primary in NH will narrow the field down to about 5-6 after the winners of those races are determined.

By the time any of us get to cast a vote, there will be 3-4 candidates.

Keep in mind that Trump is the best known of the GOP candidates, but he may be like Newt and Santorum were 4 years ago, people would support them, but they had zero in terms of a campaign organization.

I just found this huge cache of them lurking in the freezer -- no idea how old they are, been through 3 and haven't been sick yet. Basic recipe is herb+nut+cheese+oil, blend 'til blended but not-smooth. I've been doing basil/pine nut/parmesan, but I suspect there's some sage/walnut/manchego in there, too.

Not sure what you mean by "tape ape", so probably not. When I went to college back in '81, there was a certain prof who was still very attached to his lab full of PDP-8s (a mix of 8/e, 8/i, and 8/l), so I do have some experience with DECtape. Probably still have a few if I look in the right box in my storage shed. However, I came at the DEC world backwards: first I used a VAX, then his PDP-8s. Somewhere along the line, I also picked up PDP-11s.

588 I'm looking at a firewall that I could compile and run. It has options for "deny" or "reject" -- essentially "I'm ignoring you" or "no means no" -- but I'm thinking of replacing those reply functions with ones of my own devising: "TalkToTheHand()" and "ButFirstYouMustBlowMe()". Both would wait some random interval before taking any action and occasionally do something completely unexpected -- like pretend there was a host behind the firewall that was interested in responding, queef back a bunch of malformed packets, or say "no" but send data anyway.

]i]Anachronda - Pfft. My intro to DEC was a PDP-5. I spent some time
working with a couple of PDP-8S's, that is an 'S' suffix..., the serial

While I was in college, they found a PDP-5 shoved in a room in a basement, along with a straight 8. The -5 had a programming card taped to it, which I swiped. Eventually managed to get it autographed by Ken Olsen.

My new manager was traipsing a new hire around the office the other day, so I pointed it out amongst the other things hanging on my wall (framed PDP-8/a CPU, framed CVAX chip that was static-zapped while working on a prototype, Sinclair ZX-80 hanging from a nail) and they both said "who's Ken Olsen?" I told them to get off my lawn.

Never seen a PDP-8/s, but have, of course, heard of them.

A
tape ape was more or less an operator who's primary job was to load and
unload 9 track and similar (DEC) tapes from the reel-to-reel drives that
were common in the 60's, 70's, and, in some places, well into the 80's
or early 90's.

Ah. Well, I've been a programmer since 11th grade. Started out doing data entry for a small accounting firm on a Burroughs B800 and eventually managed to scrounge up a COBOL compiler and put it to use. Never been an operator.

Doesn't mean I haven't dealt with tape, though. I once had a personal VAX-11/780 with a couple of RM05 disk packs and a TU-78 tape drive. Those were the days.

I'm looking at starting with the IPcop code base, here: http://www.ipcop.org/ . If you're wondering about the distinction between reject and deny, here's a nice piece -- http://www.ouah.org/reject_or_deny.html -- and it totally makes the case for an internet appliance that "audits" SPI (AKA "Don't give packets to clients that didn't ask for 'em") by, in fact, giving random stuff to random bums and blocking them thereafter.

The fucked-up thing about the new housing rules is that they're gonna insist that any white people who want section 8 are gonna have to move to the ghetto.

705 Howdy! Howdy! Howdy!

Another gorgeous day in store for Michigan's Upper Peninsula (except for awaking to the missus watching a show about two obese lesbians with an out-of-control chihuahua - that I could have done without.)

And what's with the upward bump in shows about people who build treehouses? What are we, five?

Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars(TM) at August 01, 2015 07:59 AM (hACQf)

706 Man, Krebs. That tree house guy. He seems to have the intellect of a seven year old.
The show could maybe be interesting (they build some nice structures), but he makes it unwatchable.

I find those shows kinda interesting. Just seeing how they do it and what they can actually do.

But, I am sort of a little kid trapped in a man's body.

710 There are so many treehouse shows! And Chi is right - one of those guys is a moron (and not in a good way). I can't decide if it's for real or if the show's producers encourage the immaturity.

I watched an interesting show last night on DIY - American Rehab - about a couple who are restoring a house built in 1764. They are the 8th generation of the same family living in the house. Pretty cool.

Yeah, of all the treehouse shows, the one with the moronic seven year old irks me most.

Time to dress, get some brekkus, pick up my sister and head out to a rock and mineral show with the missus. Later, we'll take our PWD swimming yet again in Lake Superior.

Stay thirsty, my friends.
