Quote of the Day I

Now that unobtainium is due to be on store shelves for Christmas, the impossible is set to become commonplace.

-- Pixy

Quote of the Day II

Like all radical egalitarian philosophies, feminism appeals to the ambitious malcontent who, feeling herself somehow disadvantaged by the status quo, dreams of a utopia in which women will be treated according to a "fair" standard, which is to say, a standard that will make her Queen Bee of the hive. A woman who declares that she is "oppressed" by "male supremacy" usually means nothing more than this: Men don't treat her the way she would like to be treated, and so she wants to destroy civilization as we know it, and institute a gynocracy in which women will be empowered to inflict humiliating punishment on men. Whatever else feminism may be, it is always in large measure a sadistic revenge fantasy whose strongest appeal is to women of unlimited cruelty. If any man doesn't like her "feminist perspective," his disagreement proves he's a "whiny piss baby," and she will celebrate by drinking your tears.

She hates you. She really, really hates you.

WFB: Vox Explains Liberals, Shoes

Vox has written an insightful explainer on why buying a certain brand of shoe doesn't necessarily make you a good person. The piece also, perhaps unintentionally, explains a lot about the young liberal hipsters who read Vox.

The gist of the explainer is as follows: The shoe company TOMS is popular among a certain crowd of enlightened trendsetters (Vox readers, Daily Show watchers, Obama voters, etc). One reason is because TOMS offers more than just a trendy pair of shoes, it also, critically, provides customers with wearable proof that they care about poor people. That's because whenever someone buys a pair of TOMS shoes, the company donates a pair of shoes to a child in a poor country. Vox's Amanda Taub explains that, yes, wanting to help poor people is a good thing, but buying TOMS shoes is one of the worst ways do it. Not only is TOMS exploiting its customers' charitable impulse to persuade them to buy its products, which is problematic to begin with, but there is also research to suggest that "buy one, donate one" programs aren't a terrible efficient or effective way to improve the lives of poor people. At worst, they're counterproductive.

The Vile Cartoonist Ted Rall Fired by the LA Times For Dishonesty

You'll be shocked, shocked to find out that Rall is a lying liar who lies. In fact as far back as 2003 Ted Rall was known as a long-time scumbag. The fact that he was ever employed by reputable publications after this cartoon is reason enough for the MSM to be destroyed in a cleansing fire of incandescent righteousness.

In a May 11 post on The Times' OpinionLA blog, Ted Rall - a freelance cartoonist whose work appears regularly in The Times - described an incident in which he was stopped for jaywalking on Melrose Avenue in 2001. Rall said he was thrown up against a wall, handcuffed and roughed up by an LAPD motorcycle policeman who also threw his driver's license into the sewer. Rall also wrote that dozens of onlookers shouted in protest at the officer's conduct.

Since then, the Los Angeles Police Department has provided records about the incident, including a complaint Rall filed at the time. An audiotape of the encounter recorded by the police officer does not back up Rall's assertions; it gives no indication that there was physical violence of any sort by the policeman or that Rall's license was thrown into the sewer or that he was handcuffed. Nor is there any evidence on the recording of a crowd of shouting onlookers.

It turns out that pretty much everything Rall claimed about the incident was a complete provable lie.

How The Brady Campaign Victimized The Family Of An Aurora Theater Shooting Victim Again

The family of one of the victims egged on by the Brady Campaign filed a frivolous lawsuit against the ammunition dealer that Holmes bought his ammo from. They lost the case and are now on the hook for the dealer's legal fees and facing bankruptcy. It's sad but this is why you shouldn't file frivolous lawsuits nor rely on the Brady Campaign for your legal strategy.

Why Tom Brady Got a Four Game Suspension

Evidence of consciousness of guilt.

The NFL indicated in its release that a key factor was Brady ordering that his cellphone be destroyed.

From the NFL's release:

"On or shortly before March 6, the day that Tom Brady met with independent investigator Ted Wells and his colleagues, Brady directed that the cellphone he had used for the prior four months be destroyed. He did so even though he was aware that the investigators had requested access to text messages and other electronic information that had been stored on that phone.

"During the four months that the cellphone was in use, Brady had exchanged nearly 10,000 text messages, none of which can now be retrieved from that device. The destruction of the cellphone was not disclosed until June 18, almost four months after the investigators had first sought electronic information from Brady.

CA Independent Baseball Teams to Replace Umpire With Computer That Call Balls and Strikes

The human element that many in baseball appreciate will be absent during an experiment for a pair of games. A computer will call balls and strikes as the home plate umpire handles all of his other regular duties.

''It's going to be strange yelling at that computer,'' San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy joked.

On Tuesday night, the computer system will stand in for pitch calls in what is considered to be the first professional game without the umpire making those decisions. A full umpiring crew will be there for everything else.

Former outfielder Eric Byrnes will oversee the computer.

''I have been pushing for a computerized strike zone for years,'' Byrnes said. ''Just like instant replay was, it is long overdue. Very much looking forward to seeing how the entire process unfolds. I truly believe we are very close to seeing it implemented in the big leagues, just a matter of time.''

The San Rafael Pacifics will use the automated technology in two games against the Vallejo Admirals at Albert Field. The program, Pitchf/x, comes from the company Sportvision in nearby Fremont, offering technology to track and digitally record the full trajectory of live pitches within an inch of accuracy.

The MLB has had computerized systems for judging balls and strikes for years but it's only been used to evaluate umpire calls and performance after games. This is the first time it's being used for actual gameplay.

Scientists Identify Possible New Substance With Highest Melting Point

Researchers from Brown University have tentatively identified an alloy of hafnium, nitrogen and carbon as having an expected melting point of about 7,460 degrees Fahrenheit (4120 Celsius). This exceeds that of the previous record-breaker, tantalum hafnium carbide, which melts at 7,128 F (3942 C). Its record stood for almost a century. At this point, the new alloy is still hypothetical, based on simulations, so the new record has not yet been confirmed by experiment. The study was published in Physical Review B (abstract), and a lay-summary is available at the Washington Post. If the simulations turn out to be correct, the new alloy may be useful in parts like jet engines, and the door will be opened to using similar simulations to search for substances with even higher melting points or with other exotic properties.

Note that a melting point of 4120 C means that it could stay solid on the surface of the Sun in one of the cooler sun spots.

They should also have a "manager" type umpire at a TV monitor in the stands overseeing the field umpires and when they make a clearly bullshit decision (like one that probably ended up costing the Jays tonight's game), he should overrule the field umpire.

He came right out and said that he tries to pass pass overinflated balls by the refs -- and if they catch them, they catch them, if not, well, all the better for him. And why would he even try it if he didn't think there was a good chance of it being successful?

81 Our #3 son learned this week that his job is being eliminated. I guess we'll find out how long it will take for a young, but experienced, chemical engineer to fond in this expanding economy that is so short of people with technical skills. We're not holding our collective breaths.

He's currently in S Carolina near Charlotte, but that obviously didn't help him. He wants to come home to Ohio. I sure hope and pray he is successful because he was not happy where he was at. Just not home, and he's a home body.

Well also the equipment manager inflating the ball to the desired preferences of the center. He's also not likely to be gripping the ball in nearly the same manner as the QB and probably won't be able to tell just by the feel he has when preparing to snap.

I much prefer the "Well they played better and blew them out in the second half when they weren't cheating!" excuse. Because apparently cheating is ok if its a blowout.

3.) His assertion that he's "making a difference"; that he's "important" to the political landscape... and then, when caught on something, hiding behind "It's just a comedy show! If you're taking it seriously, there's something wrong with YOU!"

173 Hi Mike,

I don't know of her (professionally speaking, as in body of work/reputation), but then again I am not a violinist, so that isn't surprising.

There are so many incredible players out there now, and so much fragmentation of the music producing industry, that almost no one has the near-universal name recognition of a Tiger Woods anymore. Whether this is a good development or a bad one depends heavily upon who you ask.

That is one of my favorite pieces, by the way. Here is another, coincidentally by the same composer:

190 The thing about the computerized balls and strikes caller is that it really means that strike zones will need to be redefined. It's my understanding that a strike has to pass over the plate, at a height between the batter's armpits and knees (which may be moving) (and are generally behind the plate).

Is it the height of the armpit when the pitch is released, when it passes the plate, or when it is caught? Is it the height of the batter's armpit above the ground, or the point at which the batter's armpit is visible to the pitcher (who is on a mound) in the vicinity of the plate?

At the time, I lived up on the third floor of an old Victorian house in northern Indiana. I generally listed to WFMT in Chicago. Obviously, I have never forgotten that piece of music, or that moment. 245 #203: I was pro-choice back when the big push for fetal stem-cell research was on, and even then I knew it was a bad idea.

It already struck me as ghoulish. People said, "Well, that tissue's just going to waste, right? Why not put it to a good use instead?", and I felt it was wrong to establish a market for dead fetuses, period. Even though I was pro-choice.

Additionally, I always felt there was more long-term medical potential in using the patient's own cells to grow new organs and stuff, because there'd be no chance of rejection that way.

Incidentally, I'm very pro-life now; if I had my way, abortions would only be allowed when pregnancy complications threatened the mother's life. I also know that you eat an elephant one bite at a time, though, so I'm happy with merely placing restrictions on the practice where it's politically feasible.

261 "Over the plate" is the key part of that sentence. I'm tired of seeing a ball called a strike because the home-plate umpire's eye is off kilter for one area and it aids one pitcher and not the other team's or relief pitchers. I could even see making the plate a bit bigger if they went with electronic only.

As far as the players' differing dimensions for height I think that could be accounted for in programming or maybe the players' uniforms could have some type of sensor built into them that would be automatically tracked as well? That would even take into account the player being in different positions depending on where he was in or what he was doing with his swing that C. raised.

BTW, I love the story that fixed rosters started in baseball because in a tie game with the bases loaded but two out, the one team made a pinch-hitter substitution that was a midget so the opposition pitcher couldn't throw the strike knees to armpits zone and ended up walking in a run. I'm sure baseball historians here can tell me the teams involved as I can't remember. I think it was in the 1920s.

Whatever is currently technologically viable minus two weeks (just to be sure) is a fairly solid one. I go with a standpoint of simple logic and ethics. A fetus at any stage of development is biologically human, alive, and genetically distinct from the mother. If protecting human life is valuable to us as a civilization, we need to define it broadly and have very few exceptions.

Drawing arbitrary lines on what is human allows those lines to be moved, and those with a mind to commit abuses will push to move those lines to laxer and laxer standards. Partial-birth abortion will become whole birth abortion, then post-birth abortion, then abortion up to 5 years old, then abortion of senior citizens suffering from dementia or alzheimers, then abortion of political opponents...
There's no logical point at which it stops, unless you draw a firm line in the sand and just say No!

"Whatever is currently technologically viable minus two weeks (just to be sure) is a fairly solid one."

It's just too gruesome to think about those born at 24 weeks walking around when those aborted at 26 weeks were harvested for parts. You can be as feminist, woman's rights, pro-female as you want to be, but that shit ain't right. And in a decade, it'll be born at 20 weeks and aborted at 22. This needs to be driven by reality -- and the youngest surviving birth minus two weeks is not an unreasonable standard.

And, like I said -- I come at this from a pro-choice standpoint.....but, seriously, does anyone wake up in week 18 and go, "wait -- I was raped!"

My daughter has all the details, and has been told I will take that trip with her or she can do it alone. So far zero interest.

She has since sent the occasional letter. qq

My parents didn't tell me I was adopted until I was 18, and it came as a total surprise. I never even suspected it.

I never tried to search for my birth mother. I have no animosity towards her at all, but I figured it was water under the bridge and better to let sleeping dogs lie, if you'll excuse the mixed metaphors.

I was born in the 1950s, and I guess that she was either a teenager who "got in trouble", or else maybe a prostitute. I'm not sure what other possibilities there were at the time.

Anyway, as I said earlier, it all worked out. My adoptive parents were good. They weren't saints or anything, but they were good enough.

You might not want to be their buds -- and, then again, maybe you do -- but getting bloodline histories of medical ailments within the family can mean the difference between life and death for you and your children.

Yep. Mom stopped by this morning about 11:30. I was working in the yard & had a big can of lawnmower beer in my hand - "what the hell are you doing drinking?!? It's not even noon!"

I told her about PP. She didn't believe me, because she hasn't seen it on the news or in the paper (yes, she's that last person in America that still gets the newspaper everyday that you've heard about).
By the end of the conversation, She looked ill. I thought she would throw up in my driveway.

I went by the PP 1/2 mile or so from home (before I started), but no protesters. I used to see them on the sidewalk almost everyday - what gives? I remember thinking "don't they have anything better to do?" Now? I have nothing better to do...

Hardy was benched for almost all last season. Yes, IIRC it was like Peterson and he was compensated for most of those games but let's not forget that leaving that fact out is deceptive, and also that as terrible as domestic abuse is it does not affect the integrity of the game of the field. Sorry, Cheaties, but you got gifted Super Bowl last season and prior history demanded more than a token punishment this time.

I once told him about an outrageous Obama administration directive, and at first he didn't believe it even when I pulled up a letter from one of his cabinet members at whitehouse.gov confirming it. He actually distrusted that source.

That depends. My sister is 53 and has been trying to get health records for 25 years. Every time she does, the Health Dept says "sorry, records are sealed". She even got an attorney that just deals with adoptions and adoption related stuff and finally got a "good news, we think we can get you the records!" call. Two days later she talks to the lady at the Health Dept and it's "sorry, don't know what to say, we can't do it". When she talked to her lawyer, her lawyer just clammed up. We figured out that someone with some stroke politically got it hushed up 50+ years later. She thinks her biological mother was a college student at a nearby women's college.

Me? I have never even looked. My sister said that she saw the papers after my dad died, and the court fucked up and put the biological parents names on the adoption order, but I have never seen them since my mom has them now.

340 The horrific murder case in Santa Cruz -- 9-year-old Maddy Middleton raped (most likely) and murdered by a 15-year-old neighbor boy -- is thus far non-political. The suspect, being underage, is not being named or identified in any way.

But I just got word from a friend who lives nearby (Santa Cruz mountains) that rumor 'round town is that the suspect comes from a (wait for it) illegal immigrant Hispanic family. His dad (and/or mom) are illegales -- but the police and media and forbidden by law from discussing anything about him.

I have no proof or solid evidence that the rumor is true, obviously -- although the pictures in (where else?) the Daily Mail do lend some credence to the rumor:

But few have discussed a nearly universal result from various inebriates drunk-dialing each other.....the fact that the beer-drinker will inevitably have to take a piss.

You can know this going into a conversation -- there is a 100% chance that the beer-drinker will be the one that abruptly begs-off......along with the 99% chance that his next stop will be the loo. Well I think Brady has part of a chip on his shoulder from being such a low draft pick. So that can have a play in it.

And you know you have everyone telling him he's one of the greatest QBs but I wonder if he has doubts. And there's a very good reason for Brady to actually doubt that, and perhaps everyone else to as well. And his name is Matt Cassel. Think about it, Brady gets hurt and is out for the season and his backup comes in and does great. And its just a fluke year that they don't make the playoffs with a great winning record. And Cassel gets traded and since then has had a rather mediocre career. So is Tom Brady one of the greatest QBs ever or is he just in possibly the greatest QB system ever? And if those doubts are playing in your mind wouldn't you be looking to get any advantage possible, even ones that might break the rules?

363 Brady wasn't suspended for deflating the footballs. He was suspended for trying to cover up any involvement in the thing. The NFL lawyers asked for any pertinent text messages, not the phone, not texts to his wife or agent, just texts to the equipment guys.

seriously, does anyone wake up in week 18 and go, "wait -- I was
raped!"

Haven't you heard about the new empowerment for young women? It's
the art of figuring out you were raped several months after the event.

Really! Did that chick carrying the mattress around her college campus teach you nothing? Was it all in vain?

Posted by: Whizzo Quality Abortion Parts at July 29, 2015 12:45 AM (upjBJ)

**************
I don't know the stats, but I suspect of the tiny number of rape pregnancies that mothers (or the underage mother's parents, or the cuckolded husband/boyfriend) want aborted, almost all of them are statutory rapes or the result of acquaintance sex, and very few are the kind of rapes by strangers that you see on TV. Which means in many cases (not all, to be sure) there may have been some degree of complicity by the mother in getting pregnant in the first place, and the mother may in fact never have reported a rape to the police when it occurred, and only reported it later (if at all) when the parents or husband/boyfriend discovered that she was pregnant.

379 Weft

Honestly, it wasn't by choice. I started drinking about 10am - I smoked the one pack I keep on hand.

Plan for the morning:
*wake up hungover
*run to 7-11 for a pack of smokes & a big gulp sized coffee
*shower
*walk over to PP

If need be, i can come back home to make some kind of sandwich board real quick. There's also a print shop real close if I can come up with something catchy & original.

381 Chevelle - Panic Prone https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=bWS_XSIxAZU

"Panic Prone is an interesting song because
I've just recently learned what it's about. Pete [lead singer and his brother] was watching television
and one of those commercials came on, 'Save the Children' commercials.
That song is about making a decision whether you're going to sit on your
couch and watch this happen or you're going to stand up and do
something about it. That song isn't about if you should or shouldn't do
it, it's just about -- Are you going to do it? Is this my problem?" -- Chevelle drummer Sam Loeffler

Pretty fitting song, upon hearing Chi's determination to not just sit around anymore.

Weak hands could be hungry kids... or the weakest of all... defenseless babies.
