Bringing Back That Old New York Rap

All those who waxed nostalgic over the grittier, realer New York of the 70s and 80s are about to get their wish.

Take a walk around the Grand Hyatt and neighboring Grand Central Terminal these days. It's often like stepping out of Jules Verne's time machine straight back into the 1970s or 1980s. Vanderbilt Avenue, in particular, is becoming once again the urinal of the universe, with one block wall-to-wall "bum stands," as my son, with childhood inventiveness, used to call them: the stolen supermarket shopping cart, the garbage bag full of scavenged cans and bottles for redemption, the prone figure wrapped mummy-like in a filthy blanket. The heart sinks. It took so much effort by so many people to clear up the human wreckage that so many years of liberal "compassion" had created in a dying New York. And to see it all - I can't put it any better than the esteemed New York Post - "pissed away" by a mayor not smart or perceptive enough to have learned one thing from the experience of the last 20 years, since his own personal demons have left him stuck in the politics of the 1950s and 1960s, is tragic. It is so hard to build; so easy to destroy.

Listen, Mayor: the first job of government is to keep the people safe in their homes and in the streets. If you can't do that as a municipal chief executive, you are a flop. Equality is not the job of government, unless you are a Communist, in which case equality usually comes at the barrel of a gun or the end of a noose.

Turkey Invokes Article 4 of the NATO Treaty....Again

Article 4 of the treaty allows countries to ask for consultations when they believe their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened. And as CDR Salamander points out the Turks have not been shy about using it in the past few years.

Let's review:

- Turkey; 2003
- Turkey: 2012
- Turkey: 2012
- Poland: 2014
- Turkey: 2015

Needy.
We have always walked on eggshells when it came to the Turks - and they play that to best effect. Let me be a bit blunt having worked with and around the Turks a few times.

- First of all, the Turkish contributions to the alliance always look better on paper than they are useful in the field. From the Crimean War on, the then Ottomans and now Turks, relied on their Western allies to do the heavy lifting, or leaned on them to provide the edge to succeed in the field that they lack - NATO is just another iteration of this habit.

- They have a very large military, but it is more of an inwardly focused. Though they fought well in the Korean War, besides fighting their fellow NATO ally Greece and their Cypriot cohorts in the 70s, Turkey has at best a military built to . have a military. Look at what little they have done as an alliance member from the Balkans to their duck-n-cover participation in Afghanistan. The only alliance member that did less with less was the Greeks.

This is really about the growth of ISIS leading to the Turk's worst nightmare: an independent Kurdish homeland.

129 The Perry indictment is the biggest legal farce I've ever seen. The fact that nominally intelligent people need to debate it is an embarrassment to civilization.

The one count that remains is called "Abuse of Official Capacity," but in reality, if you look at the actual statute the charge is based on, the gist of the charge is "misuse of public property."

The thing is -- Perry LITERALLY did not USE any PROPERTY when he exercised his veto, or threatened to exercise his veto, or demanded Lehmberg resign, or any of it.

The "property" he is accused of "misusing" is the never-appropriated money. That the PIU didn't get.

Misuse of Public Property is a statute that is written to apply to the Sheriff's deputy who uses the County's interdiction boat to go fishing on his day off. The Elections Clerk who downloads porn on the office computer. The Fish Wildlife officer who brings hookers to the lake house. It's not applicable to appropriations enactments by the legislature.

In the most literal, straightforward sense of the word, the money in question was never, in fact, used. It was not appropriated. Therefore, it was not and could not have been used. It was never spent. It sat (and still sits, I guess) in the Comptroller's accounts, unused. That's the point of the whole debacle -- they did not get the money. He exercised a governmental power that referred to some public money. He vetoed the law that empowered its appropriation. He never possessed it. He never touched it. He never had anything to do with it. He never controlled it. The law that might have appropriated it never came into being. It might as well have died in committee.

The fact that we have to talk about the First Amendment and shit is just plain fucking stupid. The statute does not apply to executing a veto for an appropriations bill.

Even explaining why it doesn't apply is an exercise in stupidity. I can feel the stupidity of the indictment infecting me, just having to talk about it.

146 Hi all
Okay the $400 Skoog textbook isn't exactly indefensible. It is an advanced chemistry textbook that describes every common piece of chemical linstrumentation, how it works, with pictures and diagrams, and is more of a solid instrumentation reference book than a textbook. Every undergraduate will keep their copy for sure. It might still be too much, but it is still a great resource. What are egregiously indefensible are the $200 introductory textbooks that are nothing but glossy pictures and very generalized and summarized discussions of science - and sometimes it's even wrong! - and it changes every 2-3 years only because of the used book market, and the new edition is basically the same as the old edition except with the chapters rearranged.

147 One of my favorite law professors complied her own course materials, which we could buy from the bookstore basically at-cost for what it was to copy the pages. The students would just put the materials into a 3-ring binder, and viola, we have a "textbook" for under 40 dollars as opposed to the regular cost of law books.

I think she has since had the materials published as an actual for real law book, so now I'm sure current students are paying full freight now.

174 Here is an interesting story at the outset of WWII called The Venlo Incident.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/omwx5nn

The UK had two spy networks in Holland. MI6 ran one and the other was commercial called Z. Outbreak of WWII and the head of MI6 is dieing and two are vying to replace him. One runs Z and the other in MI6. So Z and MI6 networks in Holland are merged by the one in charge of Z in his bid to be nominated to head MI6, tipping off the Nazi SD perhaps? Meanwhile Chamberlain was still trying to cut some kind of deal with Berlin to end the war so the guy inside MI6 starts painting in a very positive light this erstwhile German refugee who says he represents Germans who want to overthrow Hitler. As a result of all this, both spy networks are rolled up by the SD.

But if you want to learn about this shattering moment, don't get this edition. I found a copy at a bookstore. The typesetting is atrocious. For example there is one picture printed landscape in the book and the caption for the picture can't be fully read because the bottom line is where the page joins the spine. Or in one paragraph, on three of four consecutive lines 'I' align with the page's right margin.

194 I remember for a while hearing arguments that it's a mistake to credit the drop in crime to Giuliani, the broken windows theory, extra policing, etc.

The idea that the drop was due to banning lead or Roe vs. Wade or that it would have happened in New York anyway due to a nationwide drop were very popular.

Strange, I haven't heard any of that in a while.

Regardless of affiliation.

In my world, I would first offer an honorable but immediate retirement to both parties leadership teams. If they refused that, I'd fire them and have them forcibly evicted from D.C. altogether.

If they refused that, then I'd turn them loose to enjoy the tender mercies of the general public. You know, the ones with torches, pitchforks and lots of rope.

The organic food eating hipsters that can walk freely around parts of Brooklyn and the LES owe a debt to a certain GOP mayor.

The same liberals who benefit from all of this would curse his name and spit on Giuliani, given the chance. To liberals, Giuliani is no better than eeevil Bush or eeevil Reagan.

I think among all New Yorkers Giuliani is viewed positively now (though, a lot of people on the left hated him at the time and some still do).

I the NYT spiked their bits on just how leftwing De Blasio was until after his nomination to prove a point--that we didn't really need a guy like Giuliani or Bloomberg--which if you believed the drop in crime theories that were passed around, would have been true. New Yorkers were also pissed at Bloomberg for a few reasons and didn't want to support his pick for mayor.

When it came down to voting for De Blasio or the Republican, A.) it was a Republican and B.) crime had started to tick up a little, but had still been relatively stable. So, how bad could another Dem be?

Well...bad.

We're not back to the 80s yet, but it's been a long time since I've heard anybody utter a bad word about Giuliani.

283 The 230kV cable repair may have been complex, but it is not that tricky. If they did it energized, THAT would have been tricky.

I have seen people repair oil leaks on a live 345kV transformer with the 345 kV bushings and lines 15 feet above them, where they are right at the safety approach limit.

or

Try replacing a 350 lb battery jar by jumpering around it with 4 100MCM cables, unbolting the two 1" copper bars, and bolting on the cables, while the battery is still on line, and there is a potential 35,000 Amp fault current, with exposed metal conductors 8 inches away are 100- 250 Volts differential. And then, after putting in a new 350 battery jar, undo everything you did without electrocuting yourself, or creating a 10,000 degree plasma cloud if the battery string shorts out. And then do it 21 times without fucking up. THAT is tricky.

So, by even the most lenient of actual standards, Bruce Jenner is still a man named Bruce.

369 This is some bullshit of a day, I tell you what. little and I are in a hotel in Aurora, Colorado, courtesy of United Airlines. Our flight out of DCA (but there's more...) was delayed over an hour due to thunderstorms. My connection was to be 40 minutes after landing in Denver. It, in fact, left ten minutes early. So seeing as there are precious few fights to Great Falls, Montana, I'm stuck here until 3:00 tomorrow afternoon.

Dave told me "you fly out of Dulles" so I drove to Dulles. He drove off, I went to check in... Only to find out that the flight is departing from Reagan National, 30 minutes away. Ok, no problem, called him and he drove us to the right airport rather quickly... This was frowned upon by an officer at the pentagon and he stopped us. No speeding ticket, but a lesser charge. We made it on time.

So, you know, he'll of a way to spend our wedding anniversary. Good thing we got out Saturday night (dinner and Billy Joel, who was AMAZING).

PS: I totally manspread at the airport.

I'm a big Fish fan -- and recently had a scare when the radio said he was playing the Shoreline Amphitheatre in a week. I was going, "shit, I missed a US concert tour!" and "holy hell, he must be back with a vengeance to be playing that sort of venue -- last time I saw him he was in SF in some theater!"

Turned out it was Phish.

Worst one was when I found out about a Wolfstone tour that had played 30 miles south of me a week afterward. I'm still pissed-off about it (Scottish band, doesn't do US tours).

426 373 This is some bullshit of a day, I tell you what. little and I are in a hotel in Aurora, Colorado, courtesy of United Airlines.

479 461 It wouldn't be worth it to see Wolfstone today, they've changed out too many people. But this was vintage, classic Wolfstone on a US tour, right in my own fuckin' backyard, in a venue I could have hit a ping-pong ball across.....and I found out about it just a few days too late.

Posted by: RKae at July 28, 2015 01:18 AM (upjBJ)

Their first seven albums were just magic.

Interestingly, the way I discovered them was somewhat complicated.....when I was 15, my folks sent me on a "if this is Tuesday, it must be Belgium" 30-day tour of Europe with a college group. While the tour had a final week in London, two of the girls took a train to Edinburgh and back for a 4-day sub-excursion. When the fiancee and I were doing a vacay in Europe where we had thought to do a week in Florence and a week in London, we decided that we knew enough about London and would replicate the Edinburgh trip.

And one of the things we tend to do on our travels is ask, "what do the locals think is cool, musically?" And we came back from Edinburgh with a "best-of" Wolfstone CD. After that, we tried to find places in the US that carried 'em and scooped-'em up whenever we were in the UK on business.

How did you find out about them?

Cnet is no longer a trusted source for software. And if SMFH changed hashes on this post, her recommendations shouldn't be trusted.

There is a reason that socking a regular is a bannable offense.

This is really too perfect.

There are bad people around. They will sock those nearest and closest to you. They strive to do you harm while appearing to be those you care most about.

Buzzion is exactly right -- she's been the same hash all night and we've interacted enough to know it's the same SMFH that I know and love (and hope she and Chi get together because they're both awesomesauce).

Chi left himself open -- a spoof SMFH could have ripped him up one side and down the other. BE MORE CAREFUL!!!!! Damn, I'll do what I can to help you, but don't get stupid.

And SMFH -- darling, sweetheart. I got nailed by trusting people on this blog. You can trust the Chi you call, but the Chi who posts could be anybody.....and have any sort of malware in his post. If you've chatted with a hash long enough to know he's good, it's all good -- but if a hash changes, you are ON NOTICE that it may be a bad guy.

No, the point was that anyone can post as SMFH, and if you don't check the hash (gcV0z) and the history, you can treat someone as if they were SMFH -- who you trust and are quite fond of -- even if they're entirely evil and wish you harm. Nics without corroboration do not establish identity.

593 @255 I just read about the Play Pump.

How stupid does the West look when we show up in Africa with our "We're here to help" nonsense... and then we give them the Play Pump?
------------------

That particular one is bad. But one of the links in the article goes to an article about the somewhat similar "Empower Playground".

The Empower Playground appears to be better received, probably because -

- The benefit of the play is aimed directly at the kids - both with the power to the school, and the opportunity for the kids to do school work after sun down.
- The wiki article mentions that the founder of the company has been careful to expand slowly. Presumably he's paying more attention to what's going on with the currently installed systems than Play Pump did.
- No one dies if the kids decide they don't want to play.
- There's an integrated science kit that is distributed to the schools (much of the materials in the kit can be acquired locally) that uses the Empower Playground system to teach local kids science.

I'm so happy I ditched Time Warner for ATT U-Verse. There's really very little difference in cable channels, and actually better in some aspects, and I've only had minor connection issues on rare occasions, compared to hours and days without service and constant cable box crash and reboots.

607 the way I remember it, kilns are something you want to convince one of your friends to own.

It might get that way ... probably very soon : -)

But firebrick is cheap and large kilns are expensive ...

There are some places that sell replacement elements for specific kilns. So if I can build up a similar shape cheaply, then put my money into a good set of elements...

In the meantime, we have a drain pan to replace & a painted floor to seal.

How are things where it is slightly cooler?

661 U-verse is something of a joke in LA County. They have it in my neighborhood and the speeds are pathetic. They send out mailers trying to suggest I should be excited about 6 Mb download speed when I'm getting 100 Mb down and 15 up from TWC.

In some areas you can get around 30 Mb down, which is what TWC had here almost ten years ago. It's really sad when ATandT sends salespeople door to door here. One guy tried to insist that what he was selling was comparable or a better value. I asked him if he wanted to see a speed test and made it clear that the minor monthly difference he was offering was no attraction if it meant switching to such miniscule speed. The broadband speed was of critical importance. If I lived along I wouldn't bother with the phone and TV service but my elderly mother and sister cannot conceive of being without.

See around here its TWC sending people Door-to-Door. And both ATT and TWC send out the mail. And maybe there overall speed is a bit slower, but for what I do I really don't see much of a negative. I've had a computer streaming Netflix on my TV and still able to do things on my other computer.

Wait until DOCSIS 3 hits your area. The TWC customers get a 5X performance upgrade. The only effort on the customer's part is taking their modem in for a newer unit if it is older than a certain date.

When you regularly deal with multi-GB downloads the speed really makes itself known.

674 How did you find out about them?

Posted by: cthulhu

----

I had heard of them from one track on a Jethro Tull tribute album. (They played "Teacher.")

Shortly thereafter, I was in Ashland, OR, to see some Shakespeare plays, went into a gift shop with my wife. While she was lookin' at all the girly stuff, I found a tiny rack of CDs - small, but what was there was all interesting and obscure. The guy who worked there and took care of the CD rack suggested them on the strength of "Zeto" the opening track on "The Half-Tail."

I loved the album... but when the last track hit ("No Tie Ups") I was transported! Was a beautiful song!

(Interesting trivia: There's another version of "No Tie-Ups" on Ivan Drever & Struan Eaglesham's album "Back To Back.")

I've never had that problem but then I don't use TWC's box. I have a TiVo with CableCard that the FCC requires them to support. The DVRs from the cable companies have always seemed pretty lackluster to me. Though again, if it was just me I'd switch to just data service and do without the landline and TV. I keep the TiVo going because my mother sort of understands it and gets a lot of use from it.
