Early Morning Thread 7/26/15 [krakatoa]

Sunday. A day off mourning: My smoker died, leaving behind a lovely pork loin, a plump turkey breast, and some fifteen forlorn ribs.

Every dark cloud does have its silver lining: The wife is already on board with the idea of a smoker that is 50% larger.

Congress looking to pay for their half trillion dollar Highway bill, by putting the screws to ya'll:

Approving stricter tax compliance measure is one of the few areas of agreement between the House and the Senate when it comes to paying for an extension of transportation funding. The biggest of those proposals would require lenders to give the IRS more information about mortgages to battle inaccurate reporting, force heirs to give more immediate information about inherited assets, and allow the IRS more time to go after certain taxpayers who understate their liability.

Meanwhile, over at Reason.com, the vile Sheldon Richman would like you to know the following:

There is no Iranian imperialism. Nuclear Israel faces no threat. In the current turmoil it sides with Sunni Arabs, including al-Qaeda affiliates, against Iran, because turmoil serves Israel's interests and Iran is a ready-made bete noire.

Why does Israel need a manufactured threat? Because if Americans knew the truth, they might focus on the Palestinians' plight. Israel and its Lobby cannot have that.

My guess is that he knows the GOPe is looking for every opportunity to dump on him, and is looking for alternate ways to run. One school of though is that when shooting into a group, or large target, that muzzle climb when held properly lifts the point of impact above the height of the target on progressive shots.

When held sideways, the climb becomes more of a sweep across the mass of the target.

The second school of thought is that it's for the same reason that some people wear ball caps backwards.

Because they're stupid.

I soooo believe that.

During college, my sister worked in an inner city hospital in a large midwestern city. Her job was to do the paperwork for the birth certificates. That meant she had to interview the new mom and record the baby's name.

She marveled at the names these 14 and 15 year old girls chose. Twins -- MaryJuana and DoyouJuana. More Princes, Kings, and Queens than you can shake a stick at.

But the prize winner was ... Meconium... Mom heard the word used in the delivery room and liked the ring of it. So somewhere out there is a 35 year old man named, "Baby shit" Johnson.

______________________________

Yep, it was in his publisher's bio of him for 20 years. And publishers don't write that crap themselves; they get that stuff directly from the authors, and just re-print whatever the authors write about their personal histories. So the "mistake" about Obama being born in Kenya had to have come from Obama himself, the original "birther."

And it's very likely that if we could ever see Obama's school applications, we'd find that he made that "mistake" about having been born in Kenya more than once.

Since the first responder on scene is usually a police officer and they aren't getting there as quickly, this seems like a fairly natural result. I also suspect that the ambulance crew in B-more have been facing the fallout of this FTP mess and aren't exactly rushing to the scene as quickly as they might have before.

My wife and I were just talking about getting a vacation house again. Years ago when the kids were little we had a house up north at a ski area and on a championship golf course. We used it a couple of times a month for years, but as the kids grew and had other things to do, we stopped going.

After a few years of only going up once or twice, we sold it. Like selling a boat, it felt like a weight was lifted off us.

Now we have grandkids and that old desire to have a place to go where we don't have to pack everything up for every trip seems logical.

I just don't know...

That is why we sold our Florida condo. It turned into a money pit and we decided we could rent a condo for a couple of weeks for less money than owning it. The trade off of being able to pack less was not worth it. Also the HOA restrictions were really irritating. And now we get to go to other Florida areas.

We had one with another couple for 20 years. Loved it. The other couple wanted to get out of it then, and between the taxes and upkeep, we knew we couldn't do it on our own, so we sold it. That's exactly what happened with the house up north.

The resort area had jacked the taxes up so far, then added on association dues and maintenance, etc. and with utilities and what the money would have earned in interest, we figured we could charter a private jet to Aspen, buy all new equipment and stay in the best hotel for a few weeks a year for the same price.

It might make sense if my daughter's family and my (so far) unmarried son use it enough.

I need to look into the benefits of holding something like that in a family trust, and maybe putting all the property into one at the same time.

Anybody have any experience with this?

In Kenya Obama shot off his mouth and said more than the average number of inane remarks. One that caught my eye was m"I am painfully aware what happens when people are treated differently under he law"

Yeah, you had it tough out there growing up in Hawaii I'm sure. And being ushered through the best schools and colleges and the political system all the way to the presidency was a struggle and horribly unfair. We feel you pain.

No doubt the irony of his remark went right over his head. Obama has lived in such a bubble of leftist elitism his whole life I think he actually believes his BS talking points.

I have our beach house in a family LLC, AKA a partnership that children own most of the stock, but parents own controlling shares.

Trusts are VERY expensive to set up and maintain. You get taxed at the highest rate all the time.

I suggest the LLC route. That keeps it out of your estate and the transfer to your kids is easy.
