Overnight Open Thread (25 Jul 2015)

WTF? Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard is set to be paroled. Is this to placate Israel over the Iran deal? I don't like this message that we are sending with this. We are paying for Chelsea Manning to get hormone therapy and now we're paroling a traitor before the end of their sentence.

Sanctuary Cities For All

Ha! If only. Republicans to expand 'santuary city' idea for all.

"No longer should working Americans be at the mercy of legislation forced upon them by the Washington elites," said Grassley. "No longer should our fellow countrymen who disagree with unfair taxation, zoning regulations, indoctrination of their children, and especially with ObamaCare, be unable to set up sanctuaries where their families would be safe from government intrusion."

Police Raids

A little homework by the cops could've avoided this incident. In Iraq, I raided insurgents. In Virginia, the police raided me.

X-Wing

Pretty impressive video with only 2 weeks of work. It's just a demo but I would absolutely love a new X-Wing/T.I.E. game.

CA To Investigate CMP

California AG to review group behind Planned Parenthood videos. The whole review is focused on CMP and not what was actually discussed in the videos.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris announced Friday she plans to review two undercover videos released by anti-abortion activists aimed at discrediting Planned Parenthood’s procedures for providing fetal tissue to researchers to see if any law was broken in the filming.

If they're not investigating Planned Parenthood too, Harris is missing the issue. Hope this will bite her in the ass for her Senate run. Doubtful. It is California we're talking about after all.

Deadly Island

At least they don't have Raptors. The people that live on North Sentinel Island will kill anyone who tries to come ashore. Now that's some serious border control action there.

An indigenous tribe has lived on North Sentinel Island with extremely limited contact with outsiders. Anyone who has attempted to explore the island has been attacked or outright killed. North Sentinel is so dangerous for outsiders that India’s government has established a three-mile exclusion zone in an effort to prevent more violence.

Star Trek Music Video

Rules For Me, But Not For Thee

This pisses me off in regard to Hillary. It's painfully obvious she willfully mishandled classified material and it gets largely ignored so far. It's a joke that she is still running. Especially if you read this story. Sailor faces 30 years in prison for keeping pics of classified submarine equipment.

Iran

Talk about spiking the football. Iran is gonna do whatever it wants and it knows Obama won't do shit about it. He's their bitch. As is Kerry. Iran hits out at John Kerry's empty threats over the nuclear deal. Hell, Iran's Supreme Leader tweeted out a picture of Obama committing suicide.

PowerPoint

How PowerPoint kicked off a revolution in military affairs. Hard to give a brief anymore without PowerPoint.

it's a low blow, a swipe at israel and jews and an anti-semitic smear by obama.

Posted by: steinmetz at July 25, 2015 10:05 PM (CrYC8)

13 Under the federal sentencing laws at the time Pollard was sentenced, there is mandatory parole, as they call it, after 30 years. They usually cut them lose 6 months prior to that to go live in a half way house to transition to life on the outside. I didnt think it was worth doing or keeping him on parole since he will be going to live in Israel.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a pack of cynical flunkies to wave away your wrongdoing? Take the last of the bacon; when the wife complains, an oily spokes-scum appears and explains that you required the bacon for a higher purpose, the bacon would have liked you to take it, and she's taken bacon herself so she is in no position to criticize.

Oral Rehydration Therapy -- it's got electrolytes!!!!

Looks like Tang might actually help, but you need a touch of salt. Then, again, you had said you were eating saltines. So Tang and saltines is actually superior to tap water for people needing to stay hydrated.

ORT: oral rehydration salts. Replacing the electrolytes and minerals lost to vomiting and/or diarrhea.

There are pre-made packets of same which are an extremely useful addition to anyone's emergency medikit or bug-out bag. But you can roll your own in a pinch.

I assume that is sarcasm, you knowing why not, but the real answer is he wasn't engaging in any illegal behavior that would merit a felony charge according to the investigation. He wasn't drunk or stoned or texting or even talking on his cell phone at the time of the accident. He also stayed at the accident scene iirc.

He was driving an SUV and pulling a loaded trailer; he probably didn't account for the extra stopping distance this will necessitate.

That's negligence. If the trailer had ineffective brakes, or even if it had good ones, but his stopping distance was greater than normal, then he should have driven more carefully as a precaution. I tow quite a lot, and I make damn sure to know how my rig handles with a load on the trailer, and modify my driving habits to suit.

As steinmetz pointed-out upthread, it's a backhand. Pollard was a US traitor spying as a freelance, then shopping what he got -- Israel cut him a check, but wasn't his "employer" as such (more like a fence), or they'd have arranged for stuff more interesting to Israel. Now BHO is shipping him off to Israel in a "Protocols of Zion" move to smear Israel as being responsible for anti-US spying.

167 142 Pollard is a U.S. citizen. I don't see why Isreal would care if he is paroled or not. And after 30 years in jail, I think it is safe to say he won't be a useful asset to them if he is released.

I assume that is sarcasm, you knowing why not, but the real answer
is he wasn't engaging in any illegal behavior that would merit a felony
charge according to the investigation. He wasn't drunk or stoned or
texting or even talking on his cell phone at the time of the accident.
He also stayed at the accident scene iirc.

Oh man. I can't wait to tell the judge that I wasn't fucking stoned, or drunk, or texting when I shot your stupid ass with a rifle. And I even stayed at the scene after I shot your stupid fucking ass.

It may not be that easy, Votermom. First you have to ask what the context of the question was and then determine the test to use. Merely paying a 1099 is not proof of an employer-employee relation.

Prolly should use the DoL's "economic realities" test, though Workers' Benefit Fund and State unemployment will have their own determination tests.

(1) Wasn't he given Israeli citizenship as part of an @161 arrangement? (2) What can be done for political reasons can be undone for political reasons. (3) They have lobbied for his release to sweep the whole thing under the rug -- now, the POTUS is trying to make this part of a "of course, we had to give Iran The Bomb to protect themselves against Israel, who spied on us" story -- I don't think they necessarily are bound by precedent when the POTUS certainly isn't. (4) I profoundly doubt that his release isn't totally driven by the Iran deal. And (5) if Pollard's release is set by law, it would seem that we have -- at long last -- finally encountered a law the Obama Administration has seen fit to obey......those are long odds.

Absolutely right. Obongo stabs Israel in the back, but to make it up to them he frees someone who stabbed America in the back.

For my part, I don't give a fuck who you're spying for, only who you're spying against, which is us, because false flag operations are pretty much Intelligence 101. So Pollard thought he was spying for Israel? How hard would it be for the Russians to come up with someone (most obviously, a Russian Jew whose family they held hostage) who could pass for an Israeli?

It's not a swipe at Israel. Israel's top politicians - and a lot of prominent American Jews - have been agitating for his release for years. Weapons grade sophistry. If that were true, why does Israel give a shit about an American traitor? Are the Israelis agitating for the release of Aldrich Ames, or Robert Hansen? No. No prizes for guessing why.
Face it: he was an Israeli asset, and as much as loyal American Jews hate it pointed out, an example of conflicting dual allegiance. Turn it around: how would Pollard's defenders feel about a Muslim who did the same thing? Not so sanguine, amirite? If an American citizen's considered and unauthorized actions unduly put Americans lives at risk, that American citizen is a traitor, and he should pay with his life. Period.

236 (1) Wasn't he given Israeli citizenship as part of an @161 arrangement?

251 230 As steinmetz pointed-out upthread, it's a backhand.
Pollard was a US traitor spying as a freelance, then shopping what he
got -- Israel cut him a check, but wasn't his "employer" as such (more
like a fence), or they'd have arranged for stuff more interesting to
Israel. Now BHO is shipping him off to Israel in a "Protocols of Zion"
move to smear Israel as being responsible for anti-US spying.

Posted by: cthulhu at July 25, 2015 11:27 PM (EzgxV)

Period.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at July 26, 2015 12:11 AM (oKE6c)

They're admitting they've done business with him. As such, they're responsible for any post-conviction mess. I'm not sure that he's ever been anyone's asset -- more like a liability -- and it would certainly have been cleaner and more elegant for everyone to have merely shot him.

So, pro forma, every time the Israelis get a chance, they tell the US that they'd like him out -- which is more than Kerry managed to do about the US hostages the mullahs are holding. And every time they're asked, the US has blown it off. Until now. When it oh-so-conveniently fits into a narrative used to give Iran The Bomb.

Absolutely agreed. Obongo stabs Israel in the back, but proposes to make it up to them by releasing an American who stabbed America in the back.
To American Jews who would defend Pollard: turn it around. Suppose the next instance involved someone named al-Pollardi who gave American secrets to, say, Egypt, or other nominal American "ally." Cool by you? Of course not.

I draw no distinction between the two cases. If you are sitting at your kitchen table cleaning your gun and it goes off, the bullet passing through a wall and killing someone, it is as you say an accident. There was no intent to harm or kill. Negligent? Yup. And you might be facing a host of misdemeanor charges like discharging a weapon within an occupied dwelling, but not murder.Dick Cheney shot a hunting partner in the face with a shotgun. He didn't intend to, and it wasn't fatal, but it did happen. I don't recall him facing any charges either.A first time DUI is a misdemeanor. An accident with injuries or death is a misdemeanor at most. However, a first time DUI with injuries or death caused is a felony. That's pretty much how it works.

GnuBreed, J***s C****t! Re the change in CIS procedures for immigrants. Then again, how many who have already gone in harm's way for the country in the recent past would do so again, now, given the situation?

Which takes me where I was going anyway. The thing about sanctuary cities for other laws is an old, obvious idea many have talked about for years.

Like so much else (everything?) connected with illegal immigration, it could be *easily* used as a club against Dems and many GOPers, with 70-80% or more of the public sympathetic to screaming-at-the-TV enthusiastic.Jeebus.

Instead the "opposition" party gives the country ..... crickets, nothing .... oh wait, not nothing - repeated runs at amnesty (an insane idea that would obviously be catastrophic under current conditions). And the most vile race-baiting ("get the bigots out of the picture").

he's been in stir for 30 years. Once he became an Israeli citizen, they
started (weakly) advocating for his release. And now it's a pox on
Israel that they've done so?

Absolutely fucking right is. If you can't see that, I worry about you. If the Israelis had any brains, they'd wash their hands of the son of a bitch.

Yeah, I know there are a lot of Jews here. So turn it around: suppose he were a Muslim, had divulged American secrets to Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, and they'd granted him citizenship, and they''d (weakly, whatever that means in this context) agitated for his release. Would you hold it against Saudi Arabia or Pakistan?

Bet your ass you would. Have the intellectual honesty to admit it.

It comes down to this: if you're an American citizen, you owe true faith and allegiance to America. Period. If you have any reservations, any whatsoever, in any context, where you would place another country's interests first, get the fuck out and go there.

Loves was good, qdp. Of course now I wonder how it would stack up, if I could compare Love's and the BBQ from some solid place back in NC for example. Live Parkers in Wilson, or Lexington #1 in Lexington.

And in the list of iconic chains that are mostly gone, don't forget The Chart House. I think a handful are left (? Malibu, Laguna?) I met a guy who was an executive with the company when it went out of business, pretty sure he said a few locations would keep the name and continue as independents.

396 rhomboid, good point. It's not like other BBQ places haven't cropped up. I do enjoy Lucille's and Roadhouse (in fact I ate their tonight - cajun burger with avocado and I also put my chili on it). Pretty good.

The Chart House was interesting, an actual high-end cuisine chain, like Velvet Turtle was. Never ate there but always heard good things. Guess they got supplanted by Fleming's, Mastro's and Ruth-Chris'.

Posted by: qdpsteve at July 26, 2015 01:40 AM (ntObR)

Supposedly Love's still has a central office in Sherman Oaks or something, but no locations left. Weird.

Posted by: qdpsteve at July 26, 2015 01:42 AM (ntObR)

399
cthulhu, that's weird about Love's. In a recent ONT we had a discussion of old US chains from our yute that were now mostly encountered overseas in surprising locations (you probably were part of it). My example was Orange Julius in Dubai.

As much as I always loved Love's, in S'pore you'd have to pry me out of a food court with a bamboo staff. Did have a S'pore Sling at the Long Bar at Raffles once. But otherwise I recall every food and beverage need was met at the closest food court.

Posted by: rhomboid at July 26, 2015 01:43 AM (QDnY+)

400 IMO, Chart House wasn't really high end, it was more of a tourist/date night place. It was on a par with other old chains like Plankhouse, Reuben E. Lee, Jeremiah's, Cask n Cleaver, Beef n Barrel, etc.

Mastro's, Ruth's Chris and even Flemings are much more into serious cuisine than Chart House ever was.

BTW, there's still a nice Chart House in Dana Point CA overlooking the harbor. It's a great place to have a drink at sunset.

401
Love's in Jakarta? Menu would be pretty slim with all the pork removed, methinks. Hmmm.

Chart House was comparatively high-end, but not the level of Flemings or Ruth's Chris, I don't think, adjusting for changes in society and food over this time. They pioneered the "islands" thing, of course, they were actually based in Hawai'i, I think. Anyway, many things that became common on menus were not when they rolled out. Their locations were often amazing. The one overlooking La Jolla Cove and the coast to the north was spectacular.

Please, I beg, I implore. Get the band back together for some more Shakey's Pizza gigs, willya?

The pizza was so very good, because it was so very basic and ordinary. Nothing designer, just plain good pizza, done right.

Pitchers of beer on the picnic tables, covered by red n' white vinyl gingham.

Dark rough paneling, balanced by beer neons, pinball game lights and the warm glow of lights over the pool tables.

Shakey's was Pizza Heaven. Even if the pizza was only so-so, it was the best place to enjoy a pizza, damn near ever.

Still remember when they would run old reels of Three Stooges and Little Rascals comedies in the restaurants, circa 1977 or so.

531 why don;t you get it right?

Jonathan Pollard never had a trial. At the request of both the U.S. and Israeli governments, he entered into a plea agreement, which spared both governments a long, difficult, expensive and potentially embarrassing trial. Jonathan Pollard fulfilled his end of the plea agreement, cooperating fully with the prosecution. Nevertheless, Pollard received a life sentence and a recommendation that he never be paroled - in complete violation of the plea agreement he had reached with the government. On March 4, 1987, he was sentenced to the maximum penalty, life in prison.

533 Jonathan Pollard was never indicted for harming the United States and he was never indicted for compromising codes, agents, or war plans. Jonathan Pollard was indicted on only one charge: one count of passing classified information to an ally, without intent to harm the United States.

549 This is a little off the beaten path, but North Sentinal Island is part of the Andaman Islands chain, which figured in the famous Sherlock Holmes novella "The Sign of Four," by Arthur Conan Doyle. An Andaman Islander, much like these islanders, was one of the villains. Small, dark, savage, and a terrific shot with poisoned darts, he was.

Seems like they haven't changed much, doesn't it? Would be fascinating to watch them unobserved. Too bad drones are so noisy.

===========
No, he didn't fulfill his end of the bargain. He was told he wd get a substantial number of years in prison. When he opened his stupid mouth and violated the agreement, the judge upped it to life which is a 30 year sentence. There may have been a recommendation for no early parole but it is the parole board who has the final say. Also, there is mandatory parole after 30 years by law. For 30 years we've had to hear this guy whine. But if you cant do the time, dont do the crime...
