Ted Cruz: Mitch McConnell Is, Straight-Up, Lying to Everyone

Drew referenced Cruz' floor speech earlier. Thanks to J Christian Adams, the video is below.

He's calling McConnell a liar. He's not hinting at it. He says it. Multiple times.

"He brought up his Obamacare amendment... which is a smokescreen, because it's intended to fail."

Hm! That's a pretty good insight.

Skip to 12:55 for the best part, as he gets into the part about McConnell's "corrupt," "cronyist" lies, but the whole thing is good.

More of this please.

By the way, I also hear they've got a Fake Sanctuary City bill in the works that they will trick conservatives into thinking actually gets rid of sanctuary cities, but in fact institutionalizes them.

Because, in their opinion, you are all "poor, uneducated, and easily led."

Begun, the Corporate Wars Have: After all those claims that we have to be united, and that we can't have these bitter primary fights, guess what? The US Chamber of Commerce is gearing up to take out the few conservatives willing to defy the Corporatist wing of the party.

As Andrew Breitbart said: "Fuck you. War."

Of course this is true. Of course it is. How else can one possibly account that there is zero attempt by leadership to actually put forward a conservative agenda. None. I cannot remember a time since Newt Gingerich was Speaker that we actually made advances as conservatives with regard to the spread of government.

Just like the Iran deal.

The one thing people really don't like is being made the fool by being used as a dupe.

My guess is most Republican voters feel that way right now.

They can keep stating it's the Tea Part or some other bogeyman. But the room is getting full of all types of party members.

Well, minus the "donors".

Republicans have done nothing they promised and have provided every excuse in the book why they haven't.

The Chamber has a proven track record in primaries this cycle, but attempting to take out a sitting member would be a new political strategy.

The group endorsed Darin LaHood in his successful primary campaign to replace Aaron Schock in Illinois. The group also endorsed and helped mobilize the grass roots and business community for Dan Donovan, who took the seat previously held by Rep. Michael Grimm in New York City.

I am not going to be surprised when Cruz turns into a beltway insider. I think that happens to everyone who goes to Washington, and it is why we need term limits. But that kind of thing is what he ran on and he delivered on it, and that says something. He has been going up against the McConnells, McCains, Boehners and Grahams since he got there. He is not their friend.

The group endorsed Darin LaHood in his successful primary campaign to replace Aaron Schock in Illinois. The group also endorsed and helped mobilize the grass roots and business community for Dan Donovan, who took the seat previously held by Rep. Michael Grimm in New York City.

The Chamber also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to help Rep. Bradley Byrne, who beat conservative Dean Young in a 2013 special election in Alabama to replace retired GOP Rep. Jo Bonner. And the group played a critical role backing Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), who faced a strong challenge in a runoff from tea party favorite Chris McDaniel.

2014 politico

If Republicans win the Senate, Mitch McConnell, the likely majority leader, is expected to hold a symbolic repeal vote early in the new Congress.

The real question is what comes next, said Stephen Northrup, a former senior Republican Senate health staffer and now a partner at Rampy Northrup.

Options would range from a targeted repeal of small slices of the law to a broad slash-and-burn strategy. Republicans say that if they win in November, members will decide together how exactly to move ahead. But GOP sources said some strategy discussions already are underway.

Targeted votes would aim at specific vulnerable aspects of Obamacare, like the device tax, which some Democrats may back.

And Republicans could use a budget process known as reconciliation, which requires a simple 51-vote majority, to gut significant parts.
----
so what has been done except to benefit 'device tax"?

Repealing the device tax is a hand out to donors who make medical devices.

It also takes a "revenue stream" away from the already ridiculously "revenue negative" Obamacare and does nothing to affect the price of health care and will only marginally affect the price of individual medical devices.

I'm not avoiding it. This attack may or many not mean anything. They are engaging in political theater RIGHT NOW. What Cruz did may be real, or it may be YET ANOTHER example of political theater.

Add to that the fact that Crus is running for prez and he's lagging behind a guy that is talking bold, and you have some uncertainty.

I suspect the main reason that subject is being "avoided" is that everyone is tired of typing the same old crap about What Should Be Done. Don't really have to, anyway, as Cruz seems to be thinking the same tired old shit we are.

If someone could think of an actual solution -- one that's not calculated to bring a visit from the FBI or otherwise violate any laws -- I have no doubt they'd post it. So far, Cruz has been short of proposing any sort of action that would in any way stem the avalanche.

Acknowledging a fairly unusual bit of rhetoric that happens to eloquently state what most here (correctly) believe about major policy issues is just that.

The parallel to the Trump situation is pristine and precise. One can be indifferent to the personal fortunes of the speaker, yet cautiously welcome the speech, *and the possible actual effects it will have on the campaign and framework of discussion*.

We'll see.

It's hardly a bad thing for a high profile senator to be savaging his caucus leader in a way not seen in many decades. Things are desperately bad, and any omen - however slim and small - that the process is slipping outside its normal stifling constraints is at least mildly positive.

because they all work together behind closed doors and do trust each other for the most part.

Most of what happens on the senate floor is pre ordained before anyone gets on the senate floor. Kabuki for the CSpan cameras if you will.

So Cruz probably did believe McConnell and probably is genuinely pissed he got lied to about a deal during the latest failure theater round of kabuki.

But I don't really care about that. They're politicians, of course they lie. And he's bitching about a procedural thing -- of course McConnell has all kinds of "side deals" going on with everyone. That's how the wheels turn. They're fucking POLITICIANS.

So Cruz could have spent the last 2 years voting against leadership, trying to stop the wheels from turning in the Senate, trying to stop Obama, etc... but really all we got was occasional red meat rhetoric and him siding with the GOPe more often than not.

I feel Cruz is entirely poll driven and his consultants have told him to focus on this "niche" of the base and Cruz is now up there using talking points gleaned from focus groups.

But I will say that if Cruz doesn't get the nomination, McConnell better damn well brace himself for whatever the next Senate Majority Leader pulls out of his bag of retribution.

But even if it wasn't, remember a few years ago, most people here, if not the great majority, thought McConnell was the real deal and trusted him. Everyone has to reach their own point where they don't take any more.

369 By contrast, Trump on the Morning Joe:

"When the economy crashed so horribly under George Bush because of mistakes [Republicans] made having to do with banking and lots of other things, I don't think the Democrats would have done that."

This is in regards to being questioned about why he said in the past that he identifies more with Democrats and that in his view the economy does better under Democrats.

Were Republicans to blame for what happened? Yes, in part. They had the power to stop the bubble, to rein in Fannie and Freddie, and the power to overturn the Community Reinvestment Act. They could have stopped banks from trading worthless loan accounts as if they were valuable.

But that all started under and because of Democrats, and when the crash happened, the Dems were in congress and could have done something about it, like President Bush asked congress too more than a dozen times.

Well, there is no such thing right now. Currently we cannot export nat. gas due to some laws created when Eisenhower was in office. Domestic prices are $2.50 or so an MCF. Its about $12-14 in Asia, $8 or so in Europe. The most favored nation status would allow a loophole for domestic gas to be sold as I understand it. Yes, but their decision pre-dates the Yemen situation and was before Iran was as heavily involved in Iraq.

Also, just look at the raw numbers -- I don't have them in front of me, but Iran and Iraq, KSA etc are lucky to have oil at relatively shallow depths thats easily pumped out and piped to be shipped to wherever. That makes it cheap to access.

Russia's oil is a little harder (more expensive) to extract and move.

America's fracking and Canada's oil sands, however, are very expensive to pump, filter, process, inject, etc., then move. Especially with all of our environmental compliance laws.

So oil at $50 a barrel does not kill Iran or Russia. It hurts them, but it also hurts Saudi Arabia. But they're still profitable at that number.

American fracking is not. It costs more per barrel to extract it then the open market is willing to pay for it.

Well, as you describe it, that would sound more like an issue with a domestic law that we could easily change that is a barrier to free trade, then something that requires a treaty.

And if those numbers are true, then our government has put up an artificial barrier to trade with the rest of the world and allowing certain nations to escape that barrier is more cronyism and is not "free trade" because if Japan can access gas at that price, but Burma can't, we're not talking free trade, we're talking trade with a bunch of government interference.

423 >>We let them get away with their tariffs and ridiculous trade deals because we do it too and it gives the politicians and their cronies plenty of opportunities to throw their weight around. Kind of like our tax code.

But that's the point. Everyone does it and everyone will continue to do it. I think you mentioned Boeing before on the ExIm thing. You don't think Airbus, a creation of multiple European governments gets hugely subsidized on multiple levels by those same European governments? Think again. And like it or not many if not most countries around the world have some sort of ExIm to help their businesses compete internationally.

At current prices most fracking plays are not economical. The only one that I know of that might would be the Eagle Ford. It's my understanding most of the bigs are drilling the wells this year to meet lease obligations, but putting off rework and completion until prices improve as the most productive time for a well is in the first few months before production falls.

There's a good chance that if he pardoned them, this matter never would have found its way to the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the John Doe investigations would continue. Courts only deal in real disputes and controversies. If someone was convicted and then immediately pardoned, a court might weasel its way out of hearing the case. Now the issue is resolved decisively.

485 This is just Cruz trying regain some relevance in the presidential race. The "anti-establishment" fire-breather role he previously was playing has been usurped by Trump. Rand Paul is in the same boat. Perry, too. Hence Perry's very aggressive and personal shots at Trump. Cruz has been hoping Trump would fade/self-destruct and that he would be the natural inheritor of those people, but it isn't happening fast enough. So, he goes back to his standard playbook of making an inflammatory speech on the Senate floor. Which doesn't really do anything of consequence except get "anti-establishment" people talking about Ted Cruz again.

IIRC, the worst thing that happened to Nixon (aside from impeachment, which was very much on the table) was being named an "unindicted co-conspirator." In other words, the Grand Jury thought he was being a Bad Boy, but didn't do anything about it.

Ford pardoned him to stave off future indictment/prosecution.

The downside? It took the then-newly formed Republican Party took several years to achieve executive power...immediately followed by a cataclysmic Civil War, so there's that.

Not near as cheap as the reserves in Saudi Arabia but cheap enough with the flexibility of the fracking process to shut down then ramp up and restart drilling when prices adjust. At the least the era of $100+ bbl oil as "the future" hardly makes sense anymore. is

NG got so cheap a few years back that it domestically shut itself down. But then the maginal operators left and the remaining players ramped back up as prices rose.

Read the current lead story at Breitbart. Li'l Scottie Walker is fulminating against Choom Boy's Iranian nuke fiasco. Good premise -- though he seems to have little to say about the Senate, which greased the deal's way -- but then he goes into a free-association rap about how he and his brother tied yellow ribbons to trees 'way back when, etc., etc., etc.

I know it'll bring out the "Walker/Cruz '16!!" crowd, but it's kinda sad.

676 The biggest reason Ted Cruz isn't going to be on the ticket is exemplified by how he handled the Code Pink people the other day. He actually engaged them to show off his debating chops. Nobody doubts his debating chops and he was clearly killing that chick on the merits.

The problem? He was totally punching down. I would expect a US Senator to be able to out-debate a moron protester. Any US Senator of both parties, with very few exceptions.

Walker had a similar stunt that was attempted on him with the illegal immigrant family. How did he handle it? Did he debate the activists that were with the stage prop family? No. He talked directly and calmly to the props, thus treating them much better than the activists, themselves. He ignored the activists. He was normal, human, and didn't punch down.

That's the difference. Cruz wants to win a debate today. Walker wants to win the election next November. Their actions in these situations tell you this.

If he's willing to straight up and BRUTALLY call out Mitch McConnell on being a liar: how do you think he'll deal with Hillary?

He. Is. Fearless.

And he is an unadulterated conservative.

Clearly, Ted Cruz has the highest IQ of any of the candidates (with the possible exception of Jindal). And yet, he is plain spoken.

If the conservative movement passes on the reliably conservative Ted Cruz for the likes of a charismatic Rubio or for an effective Republican governor who seems to be kinda'-sorta' be finding his way to 'mostly' conservative positions: then the conservative movement will have lost its moorings.

There is nothing radioactive about Ted Cruz. So there is no reason for conservatives to back a probable-near-conservative over him.

680 Now, if someone wanted to argue that any of Bobby Jindal or Fred Thompson or Dick Cheney are as conservative as Ted Cruz: such a one would at least have a credible argument to make.
But since Thompson and Cheney aren't in the running, it would only make sense to back Jindal over Cruz for the nomination.
- That's a respectable conservative choice.

But my own strong preference is Cruz.

I think you're missing the point.

Since "we"know who Mitch McConnell is and the tremendous power he wields in the Republican establishment: then we know the incredible risks that Cruz is taking by outright calling McConnell a liar.

Now follow along because this is where it gets tricky.
Since "we" know that Cruz will take such a HUGE risk by taking on one of the most powerful members of his own party: then "we" can have confidence that Cruz will be even more strident and go for the throat when taking on the Democrat nominee.
Now do you see?

Don't you people questioning Cruz's motives at least keep up with who our true conservative leaders are? Cruz has the best Conservativereview.com rating of any Senator. He not only talks the talk, he walks the walk as well.

He HAS been fighting the GOPe from day one. He even ultimately voted against TPA when the vote counted. And had he voted against "The Deal" instead of being on the campaign trail then the vote would have been 98-2 instead of 98-1. Big whoop. You're going to crucify the guy for that?

C'mon. I'm embarrassed that there are so many purists on this board who want a 100% record on everything you personally agree with. How would that even be possible? And this guy is a Senator where normally a politician would be hard-pressed to vote against his own caucus at any time.

Sessions voted FOR "The Deal". So did Rubio, Paul, even Lee. So please spare us the hand-wringing about how Cruz is not the real deal.

He's proved that he is time and time again. This speech is simply his decision to take it to the GOPe in a big way.

692 "The only thing I don't know now is if Cruz would have been as bold if Trump hadn't shown there were numbers in balls."

No need to wonder. Cruz was made an enemy of the GOPe within months of coming to DC, for daring to suggest that the Republicans in the Senate actually do what they promise. This occured not just on the shutdown but on multiple other 'sellout' occasions, like when they stiffed us with cromnibus, Cruz warned us, then made his personal valiant effort to get an actual vote on opposing Obama's policy. Reid and McConnell were united in NOT wanting an honest vote on it.

Cruz was on fire with Rush on Friday. Cruz is calling them out. Calling out how McConnell has filled the tree, reid-style, to stop a vote on planned parenthood. We already knew the leadership were craven sellouts. Cruz is painting the picture with details.

On the cynics on this: It's valid to consider the 'Cruz os doing this for himself' angle, but for himself Cruz voted based on promises made by leadership. If nothing else, Cruz feels compelled to go public with what happened behind closed doors, to explain to us what is really going on.

I know viscerally what Cruz is
thinking, as I've experienced similar situations in the personal
political world. Cruz was genuinely offended by the lie. At least the
liberals straight out tell you their position, but the GOPe takes their
own grassroots for fools.

The only relationship this has to Trump is this: Trump is yet another carnival barker pseudo-candidate who will never be President. As such, he can talk smack all day long and know it won't matter. Trump is proof that talk is cheap, especially for a really rich guy. Trump is proof that we DO have low information voters who get sold on a guy saying the 'right' things and having nothing to back it up. Pro-abort new york city mogul - bloomberg or trump, you decide.

We don't need tough talk. Too many BS artists talk tough then turn RINO in office. We need honest leadership.

It is stupid talk to the max.

You don't go about winning friends and influencing people by ticking off the majority leader.

See, if Cruz was smart like Rand Paul, he'd be best buds with Mitch and endorse him and get Mitch to info him to all his money-grubbing pal$.

696 "I agree, people signing on to Team Cruz over this are not
demonstrating a surplus of discernment or sufficient cynicism regarding a
politician."

I call BS on this. Ted Cruz has been vilified in the press by the very inside-the-beltway GOP-e types since 2012, gotten a ton of flak for daring to suggest the GOP Senators do what they promised in campaigns. This happened right out of the gate in 2013 when Cruz helped torpedo gun control, built up in the shutdown fiasco, and continued when Cruz went against leadership on a debt ceiling vote (wherein McConnell was going for a 'deal' that would gaurantee Obama his next trillion$ while making the GOP look 'strong' - showboat Failure Theatre).

The plain fact is that Ted Cruz has been going against the very grain of cynical Showboat Conservatism that has hollowed out our intellectual core and driven the grassroots crazy while creating a stink of Failure Theatre again and again.

This latest Cruz-McConnell blowup is only the latest in close to a dozen such dustups and made Cruz hated in the Senate ... for daring to tell the truth about things. It takes a LOT of courage to do against colleagues who have power of you in matters of principle like this.

Show me where ANY of the other candidates have bled for conservative causes (only Scott Walker or Cruz even rate on that metric IMHO).

Posted by: Keep Calm Cruz On at July 26, 2015 01:16 PM (yTnTP)

697 "It's over. Dennis Rodman has endorsed Trump."

Yikes, the nation has gone full Kardashian.

"marginal candidates who need a surge of
"anti-establishment" voters, of whatever stripe, to build critical mass.
Trump sucks the life out of each of their campaigns. Perry,
particularly, is going to get flushed by Trump before the end of the
summer."

Well, no wonder Perry is pissed. 7 election wins in a row in the largest Republican state, and he's been the longest running GOP governor of a major state, and he's upstaged among conservative voters by a pro-abortion non-conservative New Yorker. And why? because Trump is boldly saying stupidly annoying stuff that the media hates.

The idea that somehow a strong border's anti-immigration voter will do 'better' with Trump is absurd. IMHO, the best on that issue in a genuine way are Jindal and Cruz. Ironic that they are sons of immigrants but so be it.

"Cruz, too, possibly. Then Trump will get flushed ..."
Cruz has $50 million raised so far. He's one of the few who will be left standing.

"... by either Bush
or Walker, who are the only two candidates that are actually running for
president."

well, I think Jindal, Perry, Kasich etc. *want* to be President. And unlike Trump, they are plausible nominees. The 8-ball says low odds for all but Walker, Cruz, Bush, and Rubio, but we have a very rich field.

Trump has nothing on the rest of the field but a big mouth. In fact, he is superfluous. But the message from voters is: Don't be immigration sellouts.

"Everybody else, including Trump, are running for other
things whilst pretending to run for president."
