16 Cato's strategy of the day:

"It's taxes all the way down."

What's this, you might ask? A Conservative actually voting for taxes?

Yes. All of our laws are now tax laws. No matter what the subject matter, every law will tax every state government exactly 1 cent per year. Under the Roberts Precedent, every law is now invulnerable, due to being a tax.

#1 Your numbers are bullshit. Israel has built over 300 miles of barrier, not 19 miles.

#2
Israel's requirements are for a military barrier. It is designed to
prevent incursions of small units with vehicles as well as single
terrorists.

#3 Israel's technology requirements for the barrier are much more sophisticated than what we would require.

55 Steyn brings the words of wisdom to the piling-on on Trump for being a (honest) jerk. McCain has run on his war record for years, we alll know it. But has the Senator of the past 15 measured up to the man in the Hanoi Hilton? Trump isn't impressed any more, and neither is virtually every Moron who has slammed "McLame" here since I first started posting in Dubya's day. (Trump was pretty kind compared to some comments I remember reading here during and after the '08 election.) OK so Trump was a big meanie for picking on a sitting senator. Never, ever, ever surrender unconditionally. That gets you trains, camps, or an orange jumpsuit ISIS style.

If I ever throw in the towel on fixing where I live, I'm leaving as soon as I can afford it, or when basic survival makes money a completely moot point. My family's been leaving nations one step ahead of the army since Caesar's time, and that's why we're still around.

58 You know the best part about the Democrats excising all traces of racism or racist people or slave-related?

Data point: Just saw that they are dropping the Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson from their annual dinner.

So: Loud and clear they are telling any and all whites who do not live city of 300k "We do not want you."

We always talk about how the Dems have a lock on the black vote and a super majority of other non-white voters.

But: The bloodbath the Dems suffered in 2014 (seems so long ago) was all due to their loss of white support.

A while back, someone posted about a friend well-connected with Dem pollsters who claimed that the Dems have figured they can lose something like 5% of the white vote and still win due to their advantage with minorities. And so they are only going to focus on minorities from here out.

Wishful thinking. And it fails to account for the fact that a large portion of their support with non-black minorities is due to that which also appeals to whites: Driving away whites will also drive away a percentage of the non-black minorities.

They learned nothing from the absolute ass-kicking Abbott gave Pink Shoes; no idea why non-black minorities refused to vote for the Democrat.

67 Continuing my argument with CBD here is a different wall, it just hasn't been built yet.

A proposed 700 mile wall along the southern border from CA to NM was estimated at $49 million. But experts say it is very low ball because it didn't include the cost of buying private property they would have to KELO. I say it is low too because all government estimates are damn low. In any case assuming $49M is somewhat accurate you get $140M. Well that doable. But add in the cost of union corruption, buying property and that could easily triple. So make it half a billion. Wall will still not get built. Democrats will stonewall spending that kind of money to keep their new voters out.

But I still do not see what the difference between a wall to keep out muzzies vs a wall to keep out mexies is.

I am sorry that I have not been very responsive lately to your E-mails. I have been somewhat under the weather since my doctors informed me that I have an acute case of Post Islamic Stress Trauma with Apologetic White-House Fatigue (PIST-AWF). For those of you who do not know what that is; PIST-AWF is a newly defined disease that is found to be widespread and highly contagious.

January, 2015 - Doctors at the CDC released a statement disclosing a new disease that has already infected over half of the United States and is anticipated to continue to spread.

The disease itself affects the cells of a persons entire body then goes dormant. The disease ravages the body and leaves serious side effects. These side effects have been labeled as PIST-AWF.

Symptoms include:

* Severe pain of the scalp from pulling your own hair while viewing your president pander to Muslim terrorists.

* Loose bowels from swallowing the fact we elected Obama twice.

* Extreme hunger due to vomiting from nightly seeing terrorists murdering innocent people.

* Bleeding from the eyes. This is not Ebola. It is your eyes reacting to accidentally flipping to a channel that shows Al Sharpton as a legitimate news show host.

If you feel you have Post Islamic Stress Trauma with Apologetic Whitehouse Fatigue, please notify your local election board and place your name on the list for a cure. It is expected, and sincerely hoped, that the cure will be available in November of 2016.

Not going to try explaining shooting heroin into eyeballs to my Vic era uncle.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 23, 2015 10:13 AM (Zu3d9)

The article I linked to a week ago from an Israeli newspaper said it was 19 miles and why would their technology requirement be more that what we need.

A wall doesn't "keep people out". It is a delay factor to increase the time so that officials can respond to the intruders. I know this from personal experience in this area. You will either have to have a lot of technology and a lot of monitoring personnel are a "great wall of America" with fewer monitors and responders.

The vehicle barrier part of may be accurate but that doesn't increase the cost of the wall that much. And what is to keep the illegals from ramming an old 1 ton truck though a less fortified wall?

104 The painting reminds us it never rains but it pours, the story of my life right now. Tuesday night I was driving home from a family engagement (Sis and niece were in town, took niece to see Ant Man, cool uncle cred renewed.) when the Hobbitmobile ('02 Corolla) began to make ugly rattling sounds of a vaguely disturbing and familiar nature. I got off the highway and made for a gas station as fast as I dared, but no luck, the engine abruptly stopped with a couple of loud and ugly sounds. After waiting longer than anyone would prefer for a tow past midnight (it did not rain like last week, God be thanked) said Hobbitmobile was dragged to the dealership and I got a ride home.

I had to wait most of yesterday since the service department had its own ideas about priorities, but they got in touch with me about the bad news. The Corolla's engine threw a rod, and with appalling aim threw it through the motor and starter in the process. I am looking at the used-car warranty I have this A.M. and trying to see if I have enough $$ and ability to keep this set of wheels running, or to turn it in and begin again.

He instantly regretted having curiosity greater than Pandora's as unquiet and loathsome spirits erupted from the mouth of the jar in a chittering cacophony voices. Among the tumult of noise, he heard each spirit say its name - Pelosi, Reid, Clinton, Sanders, O'Malley, and so on.

It was too much for Mason as he curled into a sobbing ball, knees pressed close to chest as he rocked on the pavement crying. All the white, like white smoke spirits kept pouring from the jar making the green sward of park seem instead a fog-shrouded night.

I sympathize, but you left out one vital point. The reason they have won can be summed up in one word: DECEIT. Generations of it. They've embraced it, honed it to both art and science. They've won by appealing to lowest common denominators of iniquitous human nature while preaching all of society's ills have been OUR fault, from the beginning.

How do you even begin to contest that on an intellectual level? Those who believe it already do. Those who don't want to, never will.

Conservatives, on the whole, find such tactics loathsome and, on the whole, would rather lose than sell themselves out. It's called integrity. Fight, if pushed to it? Yes. Adopt the deceit of the enemy in the hope it'll work? Sorry, I just don't see it happening.

The mistake is trying to fight it on an intellectual level. You can still appeal to people's native reason, if they haven't completely abdicated it, but you have to wrap up the emotional appeal and the destiny with it. They do, it's why "hope and change" and the old vague generalities tactic beat meaningful policy ideas. Most of the people we're trying to influence don't work on an intellectual level, they operate on an emotional one. You appeal to that with conviction, courage, unwavering dedication, and making the other guy seem like a simpleton or a villain. Reagan was good at doing that while still making meaty arguments. If you don't know how, just work his words in where you can. You can learn.

Most have. That's why we're living in what someone yesterday perfectly called a Soviet insane asylum.

"but you have to wrap up the emotional appeal and the destiny with it"

Okay, sell me on this: appeal to what? What emotional appeal can you make to a majority that has bought the Left's comfortable lies for decades? How do you replace, en masse, what they WANT to believe with the cold, hard facts they NEED to believe if the Republic is to be salvaged? What angels of their natures do we appeal to when the Left encourages them to indulge their devils, and rewards them for doing it?

Yes, and that figure doesn't even include money for fencing of the majority of the TX border. Also, the Kelos have to include the court costs for when landowners fight the condemnations, as some did in TX. The ones who fought it in TX got a lot more money, so I think more will do that in the next round.

It's a complicated issue. Long story short, one particular female video game developer's sexual escapades revealed a lot of corruption in gaming media, with unreported conflicts of interest, selling awards and ratings, etc. Gamers were outraged and started demanding resignations.
Gaming media wasn't having any of that, and started going on the warpath against their own customers, the gamers. And of course, the developer in question "received anonymous death threats" at a convenient time to elicit knee-jerk support. Efforts were made to get the story into regular media, and the gamers didn't take it laying down.

294 Can someone tell me what GAMERGATE was/is?

A small group of loud feminists began pressuring game companies and publications to fix their product so it was less focused on beautiful women and men doing violent things. They wanted more minorities and empowered women in games, and fewer ads featuring hot, scantily clad babes in the magazines. They got a few magazines to start tilting reviews in favor of games that were more politically correct, and a scandal blew up where gamers found out that game companies were paying reviewers for positive reports.

When the gamers said "up yours, we like things this way, and stop messing with our reviews" the SJW's went nuts and started screaming horrible things about the people who dared question them.

The left-wing gaming press was giving favorable reviews to fellow 'travelers' of the left. Word of it got out and gamers got pissed.

They also (more importantly) tried to censor or ban games with messages they disagreed with.

Women and minorities have always been portrayed well in gaming. That was the leftwing attack against GamerGate, because some of the biggest sleazes are women.

Given the amount of coffee I drink every morning, I'm getting roughly a triple shot's worth (granted it's over about an hour or so.)

When I worked the lab we'd have Friday lab meetings every week. Fairly useless, all I could do was sit there and drink coffee and eat bagels. I'd drink so much coffee I'd begin to twitch (which made loading gels after the meeting a giant PITA.)

They aren't ramming the wall, they are using cutting torches to make large holes in the fence. And since the "Border" Patrol is no longer actually on the border, the cartels are getting multiple vehicles through over the several days it takes our ever-so-competent government to fix it. And do they station a unit at the hole when they find it? Why no. No they don't.

The towers with all the fancy gear don't work. Once the contractor turns over maintenance to the .gov, it is a matter of months before nothing works right, if at all.

Kelo was about the Supreme Court blesding the overnment using the power of eminent domain to transfer the ownership of property from the private citizen who owned it to a different private citizen who the government decided should own it.

A border fence might require the government to use eminent domain to take ownership of private property itself for the publuc purpose of border security.

That is very different from Kelo.

MAF means mass airflow sensor, IAC is idle air control.

3rd thing is a throttle body cleaning--a procedure that is highly recommended or ALL fuel injected cars, on a yearly basis.

I've got family members who are union flacks and they use this "economy is booming" shit a lot.

I can't figure it out. Where I stand it's at best stagnant with random upshots wherever the government injects tons of money (but those upshots are small and won't sustain.)

Yet they say all the time "x is due to the strengthening economy."
Example: Home prices are kinda going back up primarily due to people not putting anything on the market. As soon as people start getting a decent amount slightly over the 2008 crash, everyone puts their shit on the market and prices crash again.
But that little lag in there where prices are up due to no one selling is "improving economy" to them (they completely ignore the return to 2008 levels that occurs quite literally 3 weeks later when the market floods.)

(There are some other oddities like Menards trying to move into this area that make it seem like an improving market if you're in construction but it won't last and it's not broad based.)

Vic, internal enforcement is a red herring - it will NEVER happen. Besides, the expense - and the lawsuits, and the inimical court rulings arising from all the various tear-jerking situations involved, will defang the whole process anyway. You just can't enforce laws that have so long been disregarded, the illegals are woven into the fabric of our economy and communities.

See, this is an easy game to play.

Physical border barriers have (of course) a dramatic, gigantic impact on every aspect of this sort of problem, they cost less than a few months' worth ofsocial welfare spending wrongly going to illegals, and manning and keeping them effective would be far less difficult than maintaining the national park/national forestsystem.

You can't put ground troops in the Kingdom, the Saudi monarchy would collapse. You can't invade and occupy an Arab country, the Islamic world would rise upin rebellion. Missile defense can't work. You can't reform welfare, it won't change anything. The Keystone pipeline would wreck the environment.

419 254 Can someone tell me what GAMERGATE was/is?
Posted by: Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander at July 23, 2015 11:00 AM (COpZ4)

Gamergate has several facets. It basically is about incestuous relationships between videogame authors and their software companies, social justice warriors, and journalists. All this is from memory, and if somebody wants to correct, please do.

The nexus of gamergate is someone named Zoe Quinn, a purple-haired SJW who slept with about half a dozen people, gaming journalists among them, to secure positive press for a game she wrote and her other activities. Gawker people were among those she had sex with. When this was exposed, Anita Sarkeesian and other gaming SJWs rallied around Quinn's cause.

This exploded into a general claim that the gaming press is bought and paid for by game publishers, basically exchanging good reviews of awful games for access, junkets to trade shows, etc. Gamers felt the gaming press was colluding with the publishers and lying to them.

The second front in gamergate was censorship and hijacking of gamergate threads on reddit, wikipedia, etc. at the instigation of SJWs and sometimes, IIRC, with the cooperation of forum mods and corporate people. So gamergate is also about the larger issue of censorship of opinions unpopular to SJWs.

Because of the Zoe Quinn/Anita Sarkeesian axis, gamergate is also related to depictions of female-identifying persons in video games. (We used to call them women and girls.) Sarkeesian's claim to fame is howling about sexism in video games. So game publishers are trying to move away from depicting attractive, scantily-clad women in video games. Many gamers are annoyed by this.

In terms of SJWs, gamers have risen up against them and really taken the fight to SJWs. Gawker's pagehits have plunged. A handful of people involved in the gaming press and forum censorship have lost their jobs. This is one of the first times anti-SJW forces have drawn blood.

The battle is now in sort of a trench warfare phase, AFAICT.

Trump's popularity in polls is due to bulk purchases?

Therefore they cannot include him. Worked for the NY Times!

Posted by: LizLem at July 23, 2015 11:38 AM (hvf9s)

428 Many national Republican officials are increasingly resigned to Mr. Trump's looming presence. At a meeting of the Republican Governors Association this week in Aspen, Colo., donors and operatives mused about how to prevent him from hijacking the debate.

One idea that came up was to urge three leading candidates -- Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor; Mr. Walker; and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida -- to band together and state that they would not participate in any debate in which Mr. Trump was present, using his refusal to rule out a third-party bid as a pretext for taking such a hard line. The thinking, according to a Republican involved in the conversations, was that the lesser-funded prospects who have been eclipsed by Mr. Trump would follow suit, and the TV networks airing the debates would be forced to bar Mr. Trump in order to have a full complement of candidates.

Jeebus, WTF is with the border barrier subject? It induces smart people to claim up is down. Of course a physically secure border is quite feasible, and has a dramatic impact on every (every) aspect of the problem.

Ask the BP in the San Diego sector (or the El Centro sector, where the barrier ends and thus a side-by-side comparison is possible) if the barrier makes no difference, was too expensive to build, cannot be patrolled, and is easily defeated by digging etc.

And with that, I give up.

Then another more robust wall of at least 20ft in height. And this one fully wired with sensors.

You know that poll that shows him up by 24%? It was of about 1100 people. Of them, just over 200 were Republican voters.

In case that isn't making the case clearly enough, that poll showed that people who don't vote Republican really, really like the idea of Trump being the GOP nominee. Now, you might think that's because they love him so much they want a chance to vote for him, but does that seem very likely to you?

484 I absolutely can not believe this shit. From Fox:

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker tore into the
nuclear agreement at the start of a hearing before his committee, where
Kerry and other top officials were testifying. He said he walked away
from a briefing with the secretary a day earlier depressed, and
claimed Iran could eventually build a bomb by simply waiting out the
clock and abiding by this agreement.

Isn't he the SOB that authored the bill that gave Obama the store. I wonder how many cameras they have running he can preen in front of for the next election videos.

A new business. A bonding, surety business.

A company that, for a price, investigates and certifies that you are a U.S. citizen. You would pay the company's fee and receive a wallet sized card with a reference number which is linked to the company's computerized list.

Any employer who wishes to be absolved of any legal issues in the hiring of illegal aliens would use this card to verify your citizenship - again, for a fee.

If it turns out you are not a citizen and the company verifies you, the company is subject to stiff fines and penalties, but the employer who used the service is held harmless.

545 >>He can say, "I was against Obamas terrible plan. In fact, 60 of us voted against the Iran deal! Alas, it just wasn't enough."

It's been kabuki all along but probably not in the way you mean.

You can go back to last year and there were numerous articles saying that Obama was not going to take the deal to Congress. It has always been at least an open question as to whether this was a treaty or an international sanctions agreement.

And that's the only crack our lawless President needed. His intention all along was to get the rest of the P5+1 to go along with this which is why he went their first. France and Germany are already in Iran making commercial deals and Russia announced yesterday that they were completing the deal for S-300 missiles. The EU Foreign Minister is going to Iran next week.

The horse has left the barn. Even if the Senate votes this deal down it the rest of the world has removed their sanctions. As Senator Risch just noted, Obama has turned the table from Iran being the isolated pariah to the possibility of the US being the isolated pariah if it votes this down.

Watch the hearings, even guys like Menendez are pissed off because they know this is all a game and all over.

558 I had to wait most of yesterday since the service department had its own ideas about priorities, but they got in touch with me about the bad news. The Corolla's engine threw a rod, and with appalling aim threw it through the motor and starter in the process. I am looking at the used-car warranty I have this A.M. and trying to see if I have enough $$ and ability to keep this set of wheels running, or to turn it in and begin again.

Posted by: exdem13 at July 23, 2015 10:24 AM (ry4ab)

If the warranty does not cover it, and the car is otherwise worthy to repair, get thee to a Pick and Pull, and buy an entire '02 Toyota engine, starter and all, for a couple of hundred dollars. If you don't have the skills to do an engine swap, which is actually pretty basic, also hire a shade-tree mechanic to help you pick and fetch the engine, and do the swap.

The whole reason self-service wrecking yards like Pick and Pull exist is to service this segment of the market, people trying to keep older cars on the road for a few more years. Pro tip: Toyota engines are usually pretty bulletproof, so the odds are high that you would get a good one, even picking randomly, but if you find one in a car that was obviously written off for body damage, you can be sure the engine was in working order at that time.

Bad idea, we already have a "company" that does this. And employers are required to check the "list" first. It's called the US government and the list is not worth the match it would take to burn it. Make the government "fix" their shit or fire everybody there. Then fine the dog shit out of employers that do not comply. The conduct field raids to check, not paper.

jail employers for multiple violations an condemn and seize their company under asset forfeiture. That may help get rid of that shit too.

Watch the hearings, even guys like Menendez are pissed off because they know this is all a game and all over.
Posted by: JackStraw at July 23, 2015 12:06 PM (OGm46)

I remember. But just like Clinton with Kyoto, let Obama sign his "agreement" then have the Senate fail to ratify the treaty and tell the world, "the US government is not a party to this treaty, as it has failed to be ratified by the US Senate. This is an agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Barack Obama, Jr. Nothing more."

Yes, Obama would still implement his treaty. But why offer him this fig leaf of constitutionality on his stupid treaty and bind future presidents to it, when it has not been ratified by 2/3 of the Senate, as prescribed by the constitution?

Because now you're expecting John the Mason to be a document expert and immigration expert and to know what documents mean what and how to with hold taxes etc. etc. etc. when all he wants to do is hire a laborer for a week to help him on a big project.

And that's the truth of the matter -- it's the compliance costs that drive John the Mason to hire day laborers in the Home Depot parking lot, not because illegal immigrant Mexicans work harder than legal immigrant Mexicans or US citizens.

Because its a huge pain in the balls for him to do everything "the right way" and once he puts Pablo on paper as an "employee" he's opening himself up to tens of thousands of dollars in fines in the (likely) scenario that Pablo showed him all fake documentation.

Punish Mexico. 80% tax off the top. You waddle up to Western Union, plop $120.00 down to wire $100.00 to your senora in Mexico, $20.00 makes it.

Then, ads go up all over Mexico claiming senor is blowing it on hookers and blow.

632 600 Quickest way to slow down illegal immigration from Mexico? Punish Mexico.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson at July 23, 2015 12:19 PM (VAsIq)

The very quickest way? Remove the incentive to come here. Card people for access to services, schools, jobs, etc., and deny them if they can't produce proof of citizenship.

As indicated earlier, I had to provide proof that I floss and have had my tires rotated before I could enroll the younger Guevara in school here. But they were only checking on residency in the school district, not legal residency in the country.

Pissed me off, too.

634 Idiocracy is an excellent movie, and like many dystopic films is eerily prescient. It does, however, feature exceedingly crude and foul language (it is a Mike Judge film, after all), so it may not be for everyone.

Yep. Mexico has been cooperating with the corrupt Obama administration in allowing the "surges" of illegal aliens over our southern border. Mexico actually allowed those central American illegals past their own heavily guarded southern border and guaranteed them safe passage through Mexico and to its northern border, on the condition that they exit into the U.S. (so Mexico's taxpayers aren't stuck taking care of them).

Mexico's actions should be treated as an act of war, but because we have idiots and traitors in charge of our government, it's just business as usual.

Yeah, they were / are ESCORTING central americans to the norte americano border, then turning them over to the drug gangs to be smuggled in to the US, where they are turned over to border patrol then released.

How strange this set up must look to the Guatemalans heading north. Like... "oh... Er, okay. Sure."

must be one near DC. The local economy in DC has been surging these last 10 years or so.

And with trickle down economics, well... even the glory hole servicers get in on that boom.

649 Wow, so what you're saying is that a heavily populated part of California is patrolled and hence difficult to defeat? No kidding. Now go look at a map and see how many thousands of miles of border there is and how little of it is even remotely close to a populated area. Yeah, they aren't climbing over the wall next to the highway checkpoint. Big shock. But they are in the middle of the desert where not even coyotes hunt.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at July 23, 2015 11:44 AM (39g3+)

Sheesh. You build a wall, you're also going to have to build a road. To enable building the wall, and maintain it, and to patrol it. Nothing fancy, just a one-lane gravel road will do. And then you have Jeeps with border patrol agents, and guns, patrol it at frequent, but random intervals, so the coyotes will never know for sure when the next patrol will pass.
