Quote of the Day I

The organizers of Free Pride Glasgow in Scotland have hit a snag in their mission to plan a totally inclusive event: Some activists think drag queens are offensive to transgender people, others think banning drag queens is offensive to transgender drag queens, and still others think allowing only transgender drag queens is offensive to cisgender [straight] drag queens.

The sad part is that thanks to the media I now mostly understand this sentence despite having negative interest in the subject. Sort of like my osmosis-based yet scarily detailed Kardashian knowledge.

Quote of the Day II

The tortured effort by some young progressives in the media to craft a trendy brand around the octogenarian Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg exposes the terrifying shallowness of the left's bench of fashionable political figures. Democrats who watched a recent video released by Hillary Clinton, in which the candidate hawked her campaign's branded "chillery" beer cozy and declared that she was "just chilling" herself, must have cringed; an android in a Philip K. Dick novel struggling to mimic human emotion could display more charisma and sincerity. Like the 82-year-old "Notorious R.B.G.," Clinton will require a transparently fabricated campaign to be perceived as current and something that appeals to a younger generation. Among Democrats with ample national name recognition, only Joe Biden effortlessly projects the kind of approachability and nonchalance that drew young voters to Barack Obama, and he is not in the race. Yet.

-- Noah Rothman

Quote of the Day III

She got up in somebody's business in a very public place. She sought to dominate a situation where her very presence was untoward. And she asserted her titular authority in the pursuit of special treatment at a time when such a power play seemed wholly inappropriate.

But there's one way in which the altercation last month between XXX's Democratic congresswoman and the Capitol Police deviated significantly from her reputation: She was coming to the defense of an aide, not castigating one.

Can you name the congresswoman without peeking at the article?

Quote of the Day IV - Nostalgia For the Collectivism of the 70s

I recall a collective meeting about setting up a weekly telephone support service for lesbians. It was decided that each collective member would volunteer to take turns manning the phones at their own home, until we could raise the money to rent a space. One of the members did not have a telephone in her house, but insisted she was being discriminated against and "oppressed" by being left out of the rota.

...Sitting in endless meetings, unable to reach agreements, and taking days to produce one leaflet because someone objected to the word seminal.

...There was a total resistance to the cult of the individual...until the Thostaer government declared war on society.

Ah yes the Thostaerite War on Society. Good times, good times.

Marine and Navy Commander Both Engaged Chattanooga Terrorist With Personal Weapons

It now seems that both a name officer who survived the Chattanooga terrorist attack and one of the Marines who died both engaged the Islamist with their personal handguns, despite an out-dated Department of Defense directive banning personal weapons.

...Once upon a time, not so very long ago, the United States military celebrated and revered troops who disobeyed orders to save lives.

We should do so again, and commend Lt. Cmdr. White and the as-yet unnamed Marine who took on bureaucrats in order to protect their men, not punish them for violating a directive that has cost us 34 lives and another 54 casualties under feckless leadership since 2009.

It'll be a sad day for America when surviving members of the military are punished for defending themselves against an enemy attack.

Charlie Hebdo Says No More Mohammed Cartoons

And Mark Steyn comments sympathetically on their choice of dying on their feet versus living on their knees:

It's not pompous, but it is lonely. And the slippery, weaselly nature of the post-bloodbath support told Charlie Hebdo it was only going to get lonelier. It's hard standing on your feet when everyone else with the #JeSuisCharlie buttons is on their knees, bottoms in the air, prostrate before the fanatics. And so Charb's successor has opted to live on his knees.

#JeSuisCharlie? Even Charlie isn't Charlie now.

RIP American Marine Lou Lenart: Savior of Tel Aviv

On May 29, 1948-just two weeks after the fledgling Jewish state was invaded by the armies of five Arab nations-Lenart led the newly-formed Israel Air Force's (IAF) first combat mission, stopping a massive Egyptian army column less than 30 miles away from Tel Aviv.

In what can only be described as one of the greatest fake-outs in military history, Lenart-who, as the most experienced pilot, led the assault-and his three buddies flew four junk Czech-built German Messerschmitt fighter planes for a country that had no actual airforce. Dropping 70 kilogram bombs on the Egyptian column and attacking them with gunfire, this bit of daring-do managed to convince the Egyptians that there was enough competition in the sky to warrant a retreat.

...Had the Egyptians been able to advance to Latrun they would've joined the Jordanian troops. Lenart's mission pushed back a crucial enemy advance, helping to save the new Jewish state from what would've been a near certain defeat during that phase of the war.

The Irony: Global Warming Research Team Iced In In the Hudson Bay

A carefully planned, 115-day scientific expedition on board the floating research vessel, the CCGS Amundsen, has been derailed as the icebreaker was called to help resupply ships navigate heavy ice in Hudson Bay.

"Obviously it has a large impact on us," says Martin Fortier, executive director of ArcticNet, which coordinates research on the vessel. "It's a frustrating situation."

...Johnny Leclair, assistant commissioner for the Coast Guard, said Tuesday conditions in the area are the worst he's seen in 20 years.

Get On Board With The Nation's Caribbean Cruise

Because you'll have this to look forward to:

"AND a pre-cruise send-off featuring a freewheeling, intimate conversation with Representative Alan Grayson on December 12-free for all booked passengers!"

And of course the very first thing I thought of after reading this was PJ O'Rourke's classic essay, Ship of Fools, about his experiences aboard a Nation cruise in the Soviet Union in 1982. Ed Driscoll had the exact same thought and helpfully included a link to it:

They were leftists all right. In between palsies of fretting, they'd tell you how wonderful the Soviet union was: Pensions were huge, housing was cheap, and they practically paid you to get medical care. Believe me, you haven't been bored until you've been buttonholed by a seventy-year-old woman who holds forth all afternoon on the perfidity of American foreign policy and shows you pictures of her grandchildren. These were people who believed everything about the Soviet union was perfect, but they were bringing their own toilet paper.

30-Year-Old Man Agrees to Full Head Transplant

Or body transplant depending on how you look at it.

Valery Spiridinov, a 30-year-old Russian man with the severely debilitating Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, intends to undergo the world's first human head transplant. The doctor who plans to perform the surgery - which would take place in 2017 - is Dr. Sergio Canavero, a confident neurosurgeon from Italy who claims the procedure can be done in one day and will have a 90 percent chance of success. Other doctors are highly skeptical, both of its possible success as well as the ethics of such a procedure.

The surgery, which was unsuccessfully performed on monkeys in the 1970s, is divided into three stages, as explained in the Telegraph. In the first stage the body must be chilled to 10-20 degrees. The second stage involves cutting the spinal cord. And in the third stage the nerves and blood vessels must all be woven back together before putting the patient into a coma for a few weeks. The biggest concern doctors have is whether or not Spiridinov's brain will still function after the surgery, but for Spiridinov, who is bound to a wheel chair with very little control over his body, it's a risk worth taking.

I shall again put forth the suggestion that all U.S. Navy ships be named after members of the armed forces who gave their lives in the course of their duties.

This would of course require that many existing U.S. Navy ships, presently named after various political hacks and identity-politics plaster saints, be renamed.

I would move that the USS _Gabrielle Giffords_ be the first ship to be thus renamed, but really, such courageous Navy and Marine personnel deserve a genuine warship to bear their names, and the _Giffy_ is a Ludicrous Crapweasel Ship not worthy of such commemoration.

My attitude toward all of this, "Boo hoo, I'm offended crap," is based on things my Mom used to say:
Life isn't fair.
I'm busy, go play outside.
There are people starving in China.
Take an aspirin and go lay down. ( Before Reyes Syndrome knowledge)

That is the missile that the crew of the ship are relying upon to kill the thing that's trying to kill the ship before it kills the ship, and kills them along with it.

Gettysburg. A few weeks ago the idea of a Horde visit to the battlefield came up and a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to organize it. Clearly, the best thing to do is to consult everyone on dates and schedule it a month in advance.

But really.

So, someone got Her calendar cleared for this weekend and it's a go. At least three Moron/'Ettes will visit Gettysburg this Saturday. The best idea so far is a horseback tour.

My e-mail is in my nick. If you're interested in joining us please let me know.

272 Okay so my sharknado themed exam question:

A sharknado storm is coming to town! Fortunately, since you are knowledgeable in chemistry, you are able to obtain some neodymium (Nd) metal. This metal acts as a shark repellent, since, as it oxidizes in sea water, it generates a voltage that disrupts the sharks' electrosensory system.

Suppose you place pure Nd metal into sea water (which is alkaline) so as to repel the oncoming sharks. Upon reaction, Nd oxidizes to Nd3+. Assume that you may neglect the effects of dissolved salts in sea water. It is believed that a voltage greater than 1.75 V is enough to repel sharks. Will your improvised shark repellent of pure Nd metal in sea water be sufficient? If not, what might you do in order to generate enough voltage to repel the sharks?

Maet, seconding CBD's earlier comment - even via osmosis, I have not learned enough about the Kardashians to pick them out of a line-up (well, the deceased father I could, from the OJ trial TV coverage).

Main thing about them is that their pristinely Armenian name happened to coincide with that alien species in one of those TV Star Trek-wannabe-spinoff whatever shows. Right? Always thought that was funny, and remember chuckling the first time I heard the sci-fi name, having had lots to do with Armenia at one point.

People will take it the wrong way if I make the point too strongly, but my isolation from pop culture is at live-in-a-cave-in-the-high-Pamirs level, and probably getting better/worse.

All of the time. I brew the equivalent of three cups of coffee, decant it (damn, I've been waiting for a chance to say that) into a 20 oz. insulated container with a lid, then tap it off through the morning, for a quick re-heat in the microwave. Sometimes I don't get back for the last cup until evening. It's fine. The key is getting the coffee off of the heating element, and covering it. Otherwise it oxidizes, becomes rank.

chemjeff, you actually gave one possible answer to your breakfast question yourself. Cook up a bunch of stuff that keeps and eat it as leftovers in the morning, reheated by microwave. Quick.

Not one minute, but pretty easy/quick, are bagel sandwiches. Bagels are pre-sliced, frozen - pop in toaster. Microwave one beaten egg in a small round microwave dish. Place on bagel bottom, top with cheese slice (round ones, pre-sliced), and ham, or turkey, or bacon (pre-cooked, refrigerated), or nothing. Back in micro, 45 seconds, cheese melts. Depending on component quality, good as any bagel shop.

396 Breakfast "burritos" are easy to make. Fry up eggs, onions, green peppers, ham, sausage, bacon, and some small cubed or shredded potatoes. Mix with some taco-type seasonings, jalapenos and cheese. You can whip up a pretty big batch on Saturday and have one a day all week, freezing the rest. Just build them like a real burrito. I don't recommend the sauce built in, because it will soak into the tortilla.

404 Do you know what makes me sad, mean really really sad? It's how so many intelligent, thoughtful commenters are trapped by the "buzz words" of the so-called conservative moments.

Do you know who railed for, pounded on the table for, a universal healthcare option for our indigent and unprepared seniors? Ronald Reagan.

As Reagan railed against the Medicare bill, I have his weekly radio addresses on cd, he explained that there was already a bill introduced in Congress to take care of all of our seniors that needed such a universal healthcare option for economic reasons.

He stated that there was no way in hell that we should allow the federal government to take over all of our senior's healthcare via Medicare. What was the need? Any senior who needed a healthcare assist would be taken care of via the bill currently pending in Congress.

Thus, Reagan opposed the monstrosity that is Medicare and which the federal government has taken over almost every senior's health choices.

And Reagan was right as Medicare is a ghastly, costly system that is nearing bankruptcy/insolvency.

And yet Donald Trump, when he talks about a universal health care system, OPTIONAL, to take care of those who might not meet Medicaid but just damn work for a living and can't afford insurance, he's a flaming liberal POS who can't be trusted.

So Trump essentially proposes what Reagan proposed with our seniors, not the government take over of all healthcare, just an optional, universal system to help those who fall outside the margins where employers don't provide healthcare.

Yes, telling Americans that he wants to provide an optional universal system to help our people and make sure all working Americans have good access to healthcare without going bankrupt, surely that is a losing message. What a piece of shit liberal. No voter would ever be moved by such a motive.

I wish we had a time machine so we could go back and tell Reagan what an idiot he was...

Police officers are the instrument of state sanctioned force within the state.

But anyone carrying a weapon is an instrument of Natural Law for force to protect themselves and their property.

The Third Amendment prohibits gov't enforced boarding of soldiers on private property outside of time of war. Common Law says that soldiers should not routinely perform police action in their own country. But nowhere in the Constitution or other legal traditions does it say a soldier can't kill some dick civilian in self-defense.

"SB 4 would also make it clear that a foreign person could land at LAX, give Covered California a call and sign up for an almost full pay Platinum plan for a few hundred dollars a month, on the first of the following month when their coverage became effective show up at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and have thousands of dollars of treatment, get back on the plane and go home, and then drop the coverage."

Were I diagnosed with cancer (or any other long-term nasty), the very first thing to do would be to find the state where I would get treated and get on a plane.

Rumors of one or two dolphins and manatees are just that, rumors.

Posted by: eman at July 23, 2015 01:21 AM (MQEz6)

494 OK you want simple, the first thing to learn is to make an omelette. Its super simple, just looks impressive.

Put a nice pan on the stove and melt either butter or bacon grease in the pan until it covers the bottom. If you just fried some bacon, that will work perfectly. You want the heat about 75% of max.

Take two eggs, and crack them (pro tip: crack on a flat surface, that tends to result in fewer bits of shell in the egg). Pour the eggy bits into a bowl. Stir with a fork until the egg is one smooth consistency.

Throw two slices of bread into the toaster.

Pour the egg mix into the pan and watch it spread out and begin to cook. Salt and peppper on top of the egg. Once the egg is congealed on top, turn the heat completely off, and flip it over. All you need is something that won't damage the pan and is flat that slides under the egg. Don't try the "flip it with the pan" trick, you'll get grease all over and probably launch it onto the floor. That takes a lot of practice. Just turn the egg over.

Don't worry if it turns over in pieces or doesn't look pretty. It tastes the same either way, and you're not cooking for a restaurant or a critic. With practice you'll get better at turning the whole thing neatly.

An egg cooks very fast. It won't take but a couple minutes, about the time it takes for the toast to pop. Butter the toast, smear some mayo on it, and fold the omelette onto the toast for a sammich. Add cheese if you want.

That's your basic Denver sandwich and its not only pretty quick but easy and tasty.

If you want green peppers and onions, get the pan hot and greased as above, and toss in sliced onions and green pepper bits. Fry, stirring, until the onions are brown and limp. Add them to the omelette before you fold.

That's truly unfortunate. I've found that leftists have an irrational, burning hatred for Texas. Basically it undoes everything they have ever believed about life, its a huge finger flipping their ideology off every day and they cannot stand that. When faced with the choice of "well maybe I'm not totally right about all this" and "F--- Texas" they pick the latter.

There's not very many white people left who would throw a fit if their daughter married a non-white. But there are an awful lot of non-whites who insist on no racial blending in some very racist tones and language.

If I interpret "change everything" to mean some kind of return to non-insane, non-degraded, vaguely American political conditions and trends, then I cannot imagine anything that fits the bill. One key reason the outlook is so poor - there is no learning curve, there is no learning from public policy disaster, most of the electorate has no tools to "learn", no framework. This includes - prominently - a huge and influential segment of the "educated" populace.

Or are you referring to cataclysmic social/economic/security events that actually disrupt normal life?

532 #509: Lefties have a double standard when it comes to biracial couples. White woman with non-white man is cool; non-white woman with white man is not.

It's both racist and sexist, really; much as they deny it, they view women as something to be conquered by men, and they're much more comfortable with non-white men conquering white women, because social justice.

Pan.

Oil.

Open refrigerator, identify any suitable leftovers - canned diced tomatoes, black beans, chicken breast, sausage, bacon, whatever. Cut up as necessary and dump a suitable quantity in the pan.

Open freezer, get bag of Trader Joe's frozen onions and bell pepper shreds, throw a handful in the pan.

Cook medium-high and move it around until any runny liquid boils off.

Add 2-3 eggs or equivalent quantity of egg-from-a-carton. Grind on some pepper, drop the heat a bit and scramble until done.

Optionally throw a bit of cheese on top, add Tabasco or Tapatio or whatever pepper sauce is in the fridge door this week.

Eat.

I had a "Oh, shit!" moment when I was posting that. I don't have a good way of getting hold of her at the moment.

Here's the deal -- after I realized that Ira had dropped polymorphic malware on me, I took everything that was plugged-in at-the-time dark. I unplugged the networks, unplugged the computers, and pulled the drives. I've been researching tools and developing protocols to handle this data since -- as well as acquiring and configuring firewalls, and replacing buggy capabilities (e.g. Flash, Java) with more secure alternatives.

Peaches was in my Thunderbird address book. I could easily load up a copy of Thunderbird and snag the archive files from my old disk.....and expose anything visible to that computer to contamination.....

Or I could do what I've been doing, which is mapping out a plan to systematically exclude intrusions. It's going to be a while.

But, yes, I'm concerned for Peaches and need to get an update on her situation.

I wasted some time in thinking about sugarcoating the question or trying to pass it off in some clandestine manner. There it is.

OK? Dude. She is Perfect.
But you weren't asking THAT were you.

Yeah, man. Thanks for the concern. Just needed to vent, i guess.
Currently trying to assert her badassedness, but she doesn't scare me. I've got Tucker to defend me.

608 I think you're judging from your own moral code.
I am steadfast in suggesting to the men I know that you never want to be in a serious relationship with a woman who is or has been on welfare.
No matter how much you make you will always be competing against Uncle Sugar's endless purse and you will be found wanting.
And God help you if you ever lose your job or get your hours reduced.
Plus you might also have an unpleasant and unwelcome opinion about something. U.S.'s constant approval is implicit.

622 Today, The Aztec Times reports that local authorities can find no law to charge the 18 year old inventor of the atlatl with a crime. The atlatl, when attached to a regular spear, allows the thrower to cast the spear for much greater distances. Federal authorities continue trying to decide what law was broken.

It's a case of technology advancing quicker than the law, said a Police Department spokesman.

A spokeswoman for Moms Against Spears said "It's a sad day when spears, already highly deadly, are being made even more so. We hope Congress will act swiftly to ban this dangerous new development."

Ummm, Elizabeth II was the niece of Edward VIII, and the daughter of George VI.

631 Can't help you out there, Chi -- I was taking ambien for several years but I finally weaned myself off of it.

Now I just accept that I don't sleep in the same pattern as most people. I get my sleep in 2-4 hour blocks.

Posted by: GnuBreed at July 23, 2015 04:27 AM (NxJKv)

632 I feel ya, Gnu.
If I get 3 hours at a time these days, I feel lucky. That's why i asked. I heard here that Ambien stuff causes awesome nightmares - true?

BTW, I still think "Stolen Pallor" is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the interwebs. You deserve an award for that one.

Heh. Thanks.

>> I heard here that Ambien stuff causes awesome nightmares - true?

My max sleep time is around 4 hours; by taking ambien 10 mg I could sometimes stay out for 5 hours. But since it is still in effect, the next 3 hours are groggy ones. Not a pleasant feeling.

I'll still take one if I absolutely must get to sleep for a few hours and I can't conk out. Once a month, tops. And I don't remember my dreams for the most part, so no nightmares.
