I hear that civilians showed up to guard the recruiting center in Maryville, TN, too - a suburb of Knoxville - but I haven't seen anything on local media about it. I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, I like it that civilians are self-organizing to respond to the federal government's manifest inability to deal with a problem. On the other hand, there's the federal government's manifest inability to deal with a problem... On the Loathsomeness of Gawker Just look for a second at some of Gawker's biggest stories over the years. There was the time they stole an iPhone prototype and nearly faced criminal prosecution for it. There was the time they ran private nude photos of quarterback Brett Favre to his objections and the objections of the recipient. There was the nude video of Dov Charney. There was the time they published an anonymous source's recounting of a supposed one night stand by a female Senate candidate. There was the time they ran humiliating commentary against stolen footage of a sex tape featuring Hulk Hogan. Via Insty. Savannah Guthrie: "A lot of us are intimidated though, like, by the idea of turning it on..." *makes gestures and facial expressions as though she's holding a well-greased and annoyed cobra at arms length* Tsipras apparently believed that if the Greeks voted against the EU's deal, Europe would give it a better deal. But, as should have been obvious to him, the terms the EU was willing to offer were driven by harsh economic realities. The Greek vote couldn't affect these realities. It was irrelevant. Then read the article's account of Syriza's scruffy Marxist PhD negotiators versus European bankers and finance ministers asking where the Euros were going to appear from. After the fall of the Soviet Union, we learned that virtually no one in authority believed the official hard left ideology of the state. The leadership was not delusional, which is probably why it managed to hold power for so long. So the Obama administration is planning on releasing Jonathon Pollard despite his life sentence for espionage. He was caught spying for Israel but as his record makes clear he only worked for them after he had already been turned down by the Russians and the Chinese. And the secrets he stole while not directly useful for Israel were in fact intended to be sold to other hostile powers for info that would be useful for Israel. The Jonathan Pollard of 2015 probably believes himself he was an Israeli patriot, but the Jonathan Pollard of 1985 would have sold the stuff to Hezbollah or Islamic Jihad just as gladly, if they'd had an embassy (give Washington time, they might) and he'd thought they had any money. Speaking of which, the NRA hosted a "blue card" shredding party in the Vegas area. "Blue Cards" were part of the 70+ year old hand gun registration scheme in Clark County, Nevada, which had been grandfathered in. You were required to have the "blue cards" with your guns at all time. This past legislative session (they are now prohibited from meeting until after the Nov. 2016 election), the legislature repealed the grandfather exception and the Clark County sheriffs office and LVMPD are required to shred all their info. Anyways, one little old grandmother shredded ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY handgun blue cards. She was informally voted the most honest gun owner in Nevada... 61 Just a note to people on the previous thread who were good enough to tell me that I shouldn't have to pay federal taxes on an inheritance from my brother, the reason it is taxed is that it was in an IRA. So it will be added to my 2015 income and put me in a higher tax bracket. So I will be paying a higher rate on my entire income. *spit*
Posted by: nerdygirl at July 21, 2015 11:21 PM (kGrwF) Ummm, they may have changed things a bit, but it used to be (a) that you could keep it as an IRA and bring it into your income at a minimum distribution based on the expected lifespan of your brother; (b) that when you brought it into your income, you could take the inheritance taxes previously paid on it as a deduction on your return. As an example, let's say that your brother had an expected lifespan (according to government tables with no rational basis in reality) of 65 and passed away at 50, and he left you an IRA with $15,000 in it. You would only have to take 1/15 of that IRA into income in 2015 (though you could take more). In 2016, you would have to take 1/14 of the remainder (though you could take more). In 2017, you would have to take 1/13, and so on. If your brother's estate to everyone had been a billion dollars and had paid 350 million dollars of estate tax on a form 706, your minimum $1000 distribution in 2015 would also have a $350 deduction in your itemized deductions. (The magic words are "Income in Respect of a Decedent") Hope it helps -- handling inherited IRAs correctly is something only about 20% of tax preparers can do. What's a person to do about such a thing? Too many guns is scary (he might hurt someone with ONE of those). Maybe they should be redistributed, or maybe just confiscated. After Katrina the NOPD went cruising around seizing abandoned guns, the same NOPD that was caught on film looting storms before storm landfall. Then refused to return them to the rightful owners until the NRA sued. And what the owners got back after all those years of wrangling for the most part was rusted junk. Hey everybody.
Sorry to brag a bit but just had to share this. Had a better day today, especially at Facebook. Even though he does have some views I disagree with, I've found Ruben Navarrette to IMHO be a pretty good writer, especially with regard to his refusal to be just another good Official Lefty Latino. He's been particularly good about exposing the hypocrite fraud that is Dolores Huerta. So Ruben today shared a recent news story about how when some anti-UFW/union folks recently joined some sort of event featuring California Jerry Brown, Brown was actually willing to *speak with* some of the anti-union folks, but good ol' enforcer Dolores actually tried to block their way into the structure where Brown was. Anyway this liberal troll, Belinda Osorio Pulgar, came crawling out of the woodwork that I thought was especially odious. But... I'm proud of the fact I didn't get very icky or four-letter-wordy this time. Here's the exchange I had. * * Belinda Osorio Polgar: [to Ruben re his anti-Dolores FB post:] You've mastered your slant on actual history. You have no real experience in her efforts. And apparently, you've no shame either. But that's okay. I like most Democrats, will still watch FOX news. And, it will get it's highest ratings, WE like watching what the enemy is writing. VIVA LA RAZA, and I'm not a Chicana. BOP: And yes, you are harmless. But like a mosquito, annoying. Keep writing. I like seeing US succeed in all endeavors. BOP: Yes, to do wonderful works one has to have wisdom. You have none. You have audacity. Audacity is hot air. Kudos to you. qdpsteve: Blah blah blah. You feel free to keep your mind as shut as you want Belinda. Meanwhile Ruben will keep on keepin' on to help keep mine and many other folks' minds open. And PS, the fact you consider the people (and yes they are people, not monsters) at Fox News the enemy doesn't reflect well on you. qdpsteve: Even George Lopez, who recently got I believe a standing O calling Donald Trump a (at least I think that's what he called him), recently said on TMZ, everybody's got a right to express their opinion, including DT. BOP: qdpsteve... I'm shaking in my boots at your words. And don't do what FOX news does, don't misquote me. Monsters is your word not mine. HOT AIR. I'm moving on. Re-write history all you want Reuben. TMZ, journalist? Really? Go Bloviate, Steve. qdpsteve: You're pissed off. Good, good, good. And I absolutely quoted you accurately. You called Fox News the enemy. News flash: those are real people with real opinions and they never have and never will need your precious approval for them. So please do move on. We're doing just find without your Stalinist kind. BOP: Yawn... qdpsteve: Says the professional victim with her beyond-tired social justice bullshit monologue. qdpsteve: Neither I nor Ruben nor anyone else here need your approval for our opinions. Don't like them? Tough shit. Get that through your entitled leftist head. qdpsteve: Dolores Huerta is a whore and a pig who sold her soul to the DNC a long time ago. Does that offend you Belinda? Good. It's about time you learned that you don't have the right to never be offended. Neither does anyone else. * * I think I did okay this time. Another reason I think I did a good job: this woman actually *deleted all her posts* in Ruben's FB thread* after I was done with her. So now it's just a litany of my responses to her and none of her BS. Anyway, always great to send another idiot progressive back home crying to mama. In damage control class in boot camp, they had us put out a one thousand gallon tank of JP4 jet fuel with water.
I have experience with JP4, JP7, and other aviation fuels. They're essentially kerosene and hard to ignite, but can be difficult to extinguish once they're burning. I've never believed that TWA 800 went all splodey because of a spark in the center fuel tank, and neither does anyone else (at least privately) in the aerospace business. These fuels were formulated specifically to be hard to ignite. Posted by: Michael the Hobbit at July 21, 2015 11:56 PM (0RdKg) 192

. I mean everybody should be able to go wherever they want and all.
The artificial barriers he creates around his income and the food in his pantry violates our sense of humanity. He should let me in. I actually think this is an effective way of illustrating the problem of illegal immigration. Say I have a nice home. Say you don't. You would like to have a nice home, for you and your family - this is a good thing. But that doesn't mean its okay to come live in my home. Your desire to better yourself doesn't mean you can violate my home. If I invite you in, that's one thing. If I ask you to stay, that's another. But just breaking in and then trotting out little Maria to cry on cue when I say you have to leave... that's just wrong. This is my home. Respect my home. It took a couple of days, and on the first day the squirrels just went berserk because they didn't want to leave but they couldn't stand to be there. Salem is a squirrel preserve, its illegal to hunt or hurt them. They live in all the trees and are everywhere. I used to think they were cute. Now I realize they are obnoxious rats with furry tails and good PR that chew everything to bits. Served piping hot, and about three bites in, the realization hit me. It'd gone off in the fridge, and wasn't safe to eat. Good thing tomorrow is curbside trash pickup. He comfortable getting fresh cream pie. He know Paolo bull of de woods. Posted by: Paolo at July 22, 2015 12:50 AM (Z7G74) I'm gonna run him out of this country. And let me tell you why. Paolo ruined one of Woltz International's most valuable proteges. For three years we had her under contract, singing lessons, dancing lessons, acting lessons. I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars. I was gonna make her a big star. And let me be even more frank, just to show you that I'm not a hard-hearted man, that it's not all dollars and cents. She was beautiful! She was young, she was innocent. She was the greatest piece of ass I've ever had, and I've had 'em all over the world. And then Paolo comes along with his olive oil voice and guinea charm and she runs off. She threw it all away just to make me look ridiculous. And a man in my position can't afford to be made to look ridiculous. Now you get the hell out of here! And if that goomba tries any rough stuff, you tell him I ain't no bandleader. Is she homeless? Doesn't she have parents? If she does what the heck is wrong with them letting her go out of the house like that? Then when I was leaving some pasty-faced 15-year-old boy came in without a shirt on. Whatever happened to no shirt, no shoes, no service? We wanted to use it for a soda war on a neighborhood idiot. Had no idea how to charge it so we just dumped in a gallon or two of water, liter of vinegar, and an envelope of baking soda into the tank. Screwed on the cap and used it to a disappointing effect.
Posted by: weft cut-loop at July 21, 2015 11:27 PM (VY8H5) The old soda-acid extinguishers had a large tank of soda solution, and suspended within it was a lead canister of concentrated sulfuric acid, with its top open. Invert the whole shebang, and the acid mixed with the soda solution, and releases copious amounts of the deadly global warming agent, CO2, which pressurized the canister, forcing salty water out the nozzle. They were mostly superseded by pressurized-water extinguishers, commonly found in schools. Canister holds about 2.5 gallons, has a hose, a gauge, and a valve with a lock pin (like on a hand grenade). Pull the pin, aim the hose nozzle, and squirt a strong jet of water for about a minute until it runs out. These are great for water fights! And recharging them is so simple, a Moron could do it. Fill the canister to the line with water, screw the top on, and air it up via the hose nozzle, which conveniently fits the quick-connect on most air compressor lines. I have one of these at home, and charge it up and use it frequently; when I use the burn barrel, or if I am cutting or welding steel in dry conditions, like last weekend. Gets the job done, and being as it is only water, does not make a mess. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 22, 2015 01:09 AM (g4acn) 374

It was certainly nice cheese, I could even think of buying some. Then I hit the landmine -- $28/pound. For cheese. And there weren't even any armed guards nearby that I could see. Even made sure I'm on the East version of the street, not the West version (I'm looking for the East version).
There's no way my structure could be anywhere else. The street is sparsely populated and no other structures (a) are facing the street or (b) look at all inhabitable. And of course, Google fuzzes out actual addresses on the buildings. Weird, weird, weird. Posted by: qdpsteve at July 22, 2015 12:45 AM (ntObR) In the Greater Phoenix urban sprawl, there are many towns, contiguous with one another, and each has its own street numbering system. Let me say that I enjoy the rare bird appearances! My mom would have me kill spiders, not because she couldn't, but because it made me feel like a big boy. She got it! Posted by: JohnnyBoy at July 22, 2015 02:09 AM (KG0mU) 434

#433: Cool! I think my mom actually could not handle it, because I remember my grandma killing spiders around the house when I was a wee bairn.
But, still, it made me feel good to kill spiders for my mom when I was older. And I think it's precisely because men are wired to enjoy doing such things for the women they love, including their moms, aunts and sisters. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at July 22, 2015 02:15 AM (wKc1L) 438

Posted by: Ricardo "Charleton Heston" Kill The guy that runs the local gun store has a shit ton of historic fire arms on display at one of his stores and by historic I mean one off originals of the guns in competition to be new army rifles, a lot of stuff from field trials early on in WWII and later. Try to engage the "customer". I know blog pimping is generally frowned upon, because the pimp is getting (or trying to get) a free ride at the blog host's expense. Allen G, and zombie, and Political Hat get away with it because they do not presume too much, and they are valued for their savvy and entertaining comments. Incidentally (referring back to my chicken/pesto/swiss for dinner)....you can do weird and wanky pestos with any tree nut, hard cheese, herb, and oil. You just pulse 'em in a food processor to the right consistency.

Last night in a vision I saw her As I lay asleep on my bed She came to me as a treasure This beautiful golden-haired maid Her golden locks trailed on the green grass A spate of beauty that none could surpass And why should it worry the clergy If I slept with my true love last night? I long that myself and my true love Are not many leagues out to sea On a lonely and wooded island Where the clouds glide silent and free And small birds could peacefully nest there Where the eagle and cuckoo could dwell And I'd cast a spell on a small bird The brightness of day to quell Arise now and dress yourself quickly 'Til I gaze once again on your brow And we'll go to the Bishop of Ireland In wedlock to pledge our vows I love and cherish you dearly Elope with me, love of my heart Wouldn't the person be silly or foolish That would try to keep us apart?" That's why I was so concerned that he might be running wild over the blog and was willing to put out the bucks to out him. Turned out, though, that he managed to get himself banned without my help. *Seriously, three freakin' years of him going, "let's do this the easy way the client wants it" and me going "let's do this the way that works and keeps the auditors on track" -- and all of a sudden, I contact him to do a round of golf [which, BTW, I despise].....and Ira had him working on tee times.
