Just look for a second at some of Gawker's biggest stories over the years. There was the time they stole an iPhone prototype and nearly faced criminal prosecution for it. There was the time they ran private nude photos of quarterback Brett Favre to his objections and the objections of the recipient. There was the nude video of Dov Charney. There was the time they published an anonymous source's recounting of a supposed one night stand by a female Senate candidate. There was the time they ran humiliating commentary against stolen footage of a sex tape featuring Hulk Hogan.
And then, to think, this is the same site that sanctimoniously lectures other outlets and readers for sexism, for not respecting privacy, for misogyny, for publishing leaked celebrity nudes and on and on .
...Hypocrisy is too weak a word when it comes to Gawker. It is instead an indisputable pattern of malice and mendacity almost without parallel in the history of media. It is essentially a twelve-year spree of destruction, pain and waste. The sole purpose of the entire repugnant edifice has been to make a single owner fabulously rich and a revolving door of mediocre writers feel important and powerful.

So the Obama administration is planning on releasing Jonathon Pollard despite his life sentence for espionage. He was caught spying for Israel but as his record makes clear he only worked for them after he had already been turned down by the Russians and the Chinese. And the secrets he stole while not directly useful for Israel were in fact intended to be sold to other hostile powers for info that would be useful for Israel.
The Jonathan Pollard of 2015 probably believes himself he was an Israeli patriot, but the Jonathan Pollard of 1985 would have sold the stuff to Hezbollah or Islamic Jihad just as gladly, if they'd had an embassy (give Washington time, they might) and he'd thought they had any money.

I have a lot in common with fellow members of my species, but the differences are what we grapple with. And the differences not only lead to borders, they require them.

Speaking of which, the NRA hosted a "blue card" shredding party in the Vegas area. "Blue Cards" were part of the 70+ year old hand gun registration scheme in Clark County, Nevada, which had been grandfathered in. You were required to have the "blue cards" with your guns at all time.
This past legislative session (they are now prohibited from meeting until after the Nov. 2016 election), the legislature repealed the grandfather exception and the Clark County sheriffs office and LVMPD are required to shred all their info.
Anyways, one little old grandmother shredded ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY handgun blue cards. She was informally voted the most honest gun owner in Nevada...

Ummm, they may have changed things a bit, but it used to be (a) that you could keep it as an IRA and bring it into your income at a minimum distribution based on the expected lifespan of your brother; (b) that when you brought it into your income, you could take the inheritance taxes previously paid on it as a deduction on your return.
As an example, let's say that your brother had an expected lifespan (according to government tables with no rational basis in reality) of 65 and passed away at 50, and he left you an IRA with $15,000 in it.
You would only have to take 1/15 of that IRA into income in 2015 (though you could take more). In 2016, you would have to take 1/14 of the remainder (though you could take more). In 2017, you would have to take 1/13, and so on.
If your brother's estate to everyone had been a billion dollars and had paid 350 million dollars of estate tax on a form 706, your minimum $1000 distribution in 2015 would also have a $350 deduction in your itemized deductions. (The magic words are "Income in Respect of a Decedent")
Hope it helps -- handling inherited IRAs correctly is something only about 20% of tax preparers can do.

It may be advantageous to keep it as an IRA and do your house with a HELOC. Depends on a whole lot of factors -- but if you're within 60 days or so, there are options.

I have experience with JP4, JP7, and other aviation fuels. They're essentially kerosene and hard to ignite, but can be difficult to extinguish once they're burning.
I've never believed that TWA 800 went all splodey because of a spark in the center fuel tank, and neither does anyone else (at least privately) in the aerospace business. These fuels were formulated specifically to be hard to ignite.

Sure, that's what people say in theory. But I've found when you, one on one, bring it down to that basic a level, they understand. I talked to a lady who was here illegally about it. She was unhappy and upset, but she agreed I was right. People get it at that level: its invading your home. Be polite, follow the rules, respect.

It took a couple of days, and on the first day the squirrels just went berserk because they didn't want to leave but they couldn't stand to be there. But they did leave, and then the HOA sealed up the opening the squirrels had used to get in.
I still run those noise generators up there, though, just to make sure they don't find a new way in and come back.

Yeah, that's the one. The paint job is probably a faded factory dark yellow, though some makeshift camo isn't out of the question, but probably faded dunkelgelb. Really nice condition.

We had rats getting in through a place where we had two separate sections of hipped roof coming together at different levels, so the roofing went up to a little corner of lapboard. Sure enough, the groove in the lapboard leaked attic air, so the little bastards gnawed their way in.

Looking up an address in Arizona. Found the city, crossroads, everything, but says the address of the only structure my location could *possibly* be at, is in the 2400 block when I'm looking for the 2500 block. Even made sure I'm on the East version of the street, not the West version (I'm looking for the East version).
There's no way my structure could be anywhere else. The street is sparsely populated and no other structures (a) are facing the street or (b) look at all inhabitable. And of course, Google fuzzes out actual addresses on the buildings.

Got this one from the pros. Take something out of terrycloth, like an old washrag. Cut into rough 1" squares. Wedge the hook on the trap into the loops really well. Smear peanut butter on cloth, smooshing it in.
Rats will lick off peanut butter, until it's really into something (like the cloth), then they want to carry it off to get the last bits. if the cloth is really attached to the trap, they'll tug and tug until they get it.

Got this one from the pros. Take something out of terrycloth, like an old washrag. Cut into rough 1" squares. Wedge the hook on the trap into the loops really well. Smear peanut butter on cloth, smooshing it in.
Rats will lick off peanut butter, until it's really into something (like the cloth), then they want to carry it off to get the last bits. if the cloth is really attached to the trap, they'll tug and tug until they get it.

The old soda-acid extinguishers had a large tank of soda solution, and suspended within it was a lead canister of concentrated sulfuric acid, with its top open. Fill the canister to the line with water, screw the top on, and air it up via the hose nozzle, which conveniently fits the quick-connect on most air compressor lines.
I have one of these at home, and charge it up and use it frequently; when I use the burn barrel, or if I am cutting or welding steel in dry conditions, like last weekend. Gets the job done, and being as it is only water, does not make a mess.

Raisins work great for baiting mouse traps. Peanut butter, they just lick it off without springing the trap. Raisins are tough and leathery, and you can wedge them tightly in the trigger, and the mice are forced to tug hard in an effort to get them loose, and, Snap! I've gotten three mice off one raisin in an evening.

In the Greater Phoenix urban sprawl, there are many towns, contiguous with one another, and each has its own street numbering system. And sometimes streets change names, when they cross a town boundary, or county boundary. So it's quite possible for "2500 E. University Drive" to be quite close to "2500 W. University Drive".

When we moved into our present house I heard piercing scream from the kitchen. Turned out my wife had seen a mouse. And sure enough I saw one peeking out from under the stove.
She was so upset it almost got me freaked out and mice don't particularly bother me--don't like 'em but they don't usually freak me out.
Anyhow it did give me a chance to play great white hunter.

I offloaded a coal-burning heating boiler, weight estimated to be 3 tons, off my car trailer today, all by my lonesome. Used a 1.5 ton jack to lift each end in turn, and placed pipe rollers under the skids, and then used my tractor with front-end loader to drag it off trailer onto some timbers placed to catch it. Went slick as can be; no damage to the boiler, trailer, or me. And $400 not spent on a picker truck.

The way Flash and Java are being updated daily, it might be a good idea to shut 'em down for a few weeks. I've got the plugins disabled and noscript on the prowl.

I'm just way past the point of being nice to the guy - what he's doing is simply rude, and as far as I can remember, has never contributed one word here other than "my blog."

Heck, we are on the same page. I know you weren't suggesting that I was being rude to him. I'm sort of puzzled as to why he thinks this approach is the way to go; he makes the nigerian email scammers seem sophisticated.
Anyway, time to go to bed. Didn't have a tornado, but after several quiet hours, now I have a T-storm rattling the windows.

Actually, I've taken to using homemade guacamole in lieu of mayo on sammiches lately. Really good alternative. My latest fave is fresh tomatoes, guac, hard boiled egg, cheese with a little S & P.

If you're talking about Ira -- yes, he's very adept at social engineering. He IM'd an ex-boss and managed to convince him that I was actually pleasant company (in one IM session v. 3 years of being a hardass*)....which you should certainly be in a position to know as stretching things. That's why I was so concerned that he might be running wild over the blog and was willing to put out the bucks to out him. Turned out, though, that he managed to get himself banned without my help.
*Seriously, three freakin' years of him going, "let's do this the easy way the client wants it" and me going "let's do this the way that works and keeps the auditors on track" -- and all of a sudden, I contact him to do a round of golf [which, BTW, I despise].....and Ira had him working on tee times.
It's obvious that Ira would have a profitable career in selling ice cubes to Eskimos if he'd only lay off on harassing accountants online.
