Couple of things:
In the "illegal immigration" debate. There are 'immigrant' visas(IV) and 'non-immigrant visas' (NIV). Those with IVs are here to 'emigrate' : live, work and remain in the US , and will receive the status of Lawfully Admitted Permanent Resident. This status can potentially be converted to citizenship by going throught the citizenship process but many LAPRs never become citizens. Those with NIVs are here for a temporary reason: student, visitor, entertainer, or temporary jobs - that can't be filled by US workers. These are the visas that get abused the most . Visa overstays are arguably the largest source of illegal immigration. NIV holders sign a piece of paper swearing their intention NOT to stay in the US indefinitely and only for the terms of their visas. They lie about this all the time and overstay anyway. Visa fraud is a crime committed when businesses bring in workers and either lie about the availability of US workers or lie about the availability of the advertised jobs and 'pool' the workers to 'rent them out' to other employers. The laws are there, they are clear, but they are selectively enforced. Solving the 'illegal immigration problem' = enforcing the existing law. My understanding with the (proposed?) SS/guns proposal is this:
If a person, who collects social security, has a 3rd party administer their funds for them - for whatever reason (not just incompetency) - then they would no longer be able to buy a firearm. Posted by: OurCountryIsScrewed at July 21, 2015 12:31 PM That's how I read it too. And they're very media-savvy, too, which is a joy to behold: evidently, they've got a crapload of video, but they're only doing one small release at a time, in order to guarantee maximum impact. Because I was late back to the thread...Back to my original point about Palin...
If Palin had been asked and agreed to back Flynn in Illinois, he would be the candidate today. That district is heavily republican and had a low turnout primary. Palin's endorsement would mean a winning percentage would have crawled through glass to vote for her pick. Everyone in the district would have known his name. I heard a guy explain how he got around the thermostat problem. He wired a second thermostat inside a closet and left the original as a decoy.
I like the idea, but I don't think it would work without external temperature sensors. Most thermostats have their temperature sensor built in. So the thermostat would regulate the temperature in the house according to the temperature in the closet. So you'd have some wild temperature swings in the house. If it's a hot day, the closet heats up more slowly than the rest of the house, so the thermostat doesn't kick on the A/C until the house is 10 degrees or so too hot. Somehow Ataru is chosen as champion. And Lum, goddess in a tiger-stripe bikini, is the aliens' champion.
------------ The ownership of the world will be determined by a weel-long game of tag, which in Japan is called "the oni game". (See the visuals here. Well Anna, Ataru was originally chosen at random by the Japanese government, which can do those sort of things because Government Authority. And also because Ataru has that sort of luck. (Another joke, his name "Moroboshi Ataru" means "hit by a falling star".) These days the Japanese government would have checked out the user profiles of everyone in the greater Tokyo area and picked Ataru because his online history would have suggested his qualifications. There's something called a NEST thermostat that we're planning to get for my mother-in-law.
She's 84, growingly senile, dumb as a post, OCD, and a nasty person. We get calls from her three and four times a week about her 'broken' thermostat. Truth is she can't leave it alone, fucks it up, and calls us. The NEST thermostat is networked. We can fix it from our cellphones. This will probably drive her nuts, but we won't ahve to keep running over to her house (she lives VERY close) to fix it for her. Now if we can do something similar for her television, we're good. Say, has anyone, ever, convinced their Mrs. that turning the house thermostat down will not actually cool the house faster?
That depends on the system. Some A/C units have three states. Off, mid, and high. If the zone cooling is close to the intended temperature, the A/C may be on mid, cooling the zone slowly. If you lower the A/C in that case, it tells the unit you're far from the intended temperature and sends the unit to high. But if the A/C is already on high, you're correct, lowering the temperature even further won't do anything. Posted by: bonhomme at July 21, 2015 12:56 PM (jhqr1) 214

I like the idea, but I don't think it would work without external
temperature sensors. Most thermostats have their temperature sensor built in.>>> There are those technical issues one could design around. Posting here, since the politics thread seems to have died:
The current Trump story is really about John McCain disrespecting Republican voters. McCain said they were "crazies" and that's what set Trump off. So there are at least a few folks that understand that Trump was standing up for voters. jeb! said he wasn't going to pander to the conservative base. That's another candidate disrespecting voters. 189 Sure, why not put an agency that admits it has been paying out billions of dollars in SS benefits to thousands of people over the age of 112 in charge of determining somebody else's competency?
Posted by: TrivialPursuer at July 21, 2015 12:49 PM The SSA doesn't determine competency, a doctor does. When SSA is informed, usually be a family member, that somebody cannot handle money a form, Statement of Capability, is sent to the beneficiary's doctor. It's odd that somebody deceased would get benefits 199 years after their birth date. At 100, somebody is supposed to verify the bene is still alive. I dunno about periodic updates. SSA offices receive form Statement of Death from funeral homes for every deceased. It seems likely that what happens is that the family doesn't use a funeral home so the death doesn't get reported. A lot of fraud can be committed to get more money. Posted by: Delurk ergo sum at July 21, 2015 01:37 PM (E/tuE) 254
