Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | So Two "Top Editors" Have Resigned from Gawker, In Protest of "Interference" From the "Business Side" of the EntrerpriseThis piece is hosted on an archive site, so Gawker doesn't get any traffic from it. Nick Denton published an extraordinary claim on his site Kinja (no link):I’m sorry also that Jordan Sargent, reporting this story impeccably despite a personal drama, was exposed to such traumatizing hatred online, just for doing his job.Gawker is apologizing for exposing Jordan Sargent to "traumatizing hatred online"? Isn't exposing random people to traumatizing hatred online their entire business model? Don't forget: The Justine Sacco incident was contrived by a Gawker writer at ValleyWag, a vertical which seeks to dump hatred on random people in Silicon Valley. If you don't know about the Gawker meltdown, you can read my piece about it from Friday night. It's got a hell of a headline, if I do say so myself. This is like watching a game between two teams you despise: You're rooting for injuries. Oh, and Michael Wollf wrote that in a recent conversation with Gawker's head Nick Denton, Nick Denton took a cavalier attitude towards gratuitous nastiness. Denton immediately emailed me [after a completely gratuitous attack on Wolff's "noncombatant" pregnant girlfriend] and, in our exchange, apologized for the Gawker coverage about my girlfriend and forthcoming baby: "That description of Victoria was mean and pointless." Then he added: "I do wish there was a better way to address insults without storing up resentment ... I would love to institutionalize and automate some right of response. Even the most insolent of Gawker bloggers is better and more reasonable in an exchange." Again, there is this odd after-the-fact, hands-off, extremely passive sort of contrition. And then the weird, "I would love to institutionalize and automate some right of response." Huh? His point seemed to be that there was in fact no oversight, and no responsibility, prompting questions about whether Denton is able to exercise oversight, or has in effect relinquished most responsibility. Last fall, he acknowledged something like this, saying he was pulling back and assigning greater oversight powers to a management committee. No oversight = a damaging admission which will be used in the Hulk Hogan lawsuit. Also, Wolff goes on to note, bitterly but deservedly, that Gawker writers will have a hard time getting jobs at other places. Milo Yiannopoulos collected all the people who should sue Gawker. The strongest case would appear to be James Franco's -- because a former Gawker writer admitted on Twitter (before deleting it) that he made up a "baseless" claim that Franco was guilty of a violent gay rape, and he did so because he "felt like" doing it -- and so did his boss. (He did not specify which "boss" he meant.) Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

As one of the Horde noted in the last James Franco post, it's entirely possible that his lawyers wrote a demand letter, got paid by Gawker or its insurance company, and entered into a settlement agreement, and both parties have mutual nondisclosures, which would explain his lack of public response.

Actually, the business model of Gawker is pretty good.
If you take a successful blog with a dedicated readership and enough co-bloggers, split it into sub topic blogs and feed links back and forth promoting each other, you reach what could be a very profitable critical mass. He has played several gay characters. He played Allen Ginsberg in the film Howl, he was actually decent in that. At Sundance on year they had a film of his called Interior, Leather Bar that recreated lost footage from some famous gay porno? And at Sundance this winter he was in the film "I am Michael", about a real gay activist that renounced his homosexuality. Dunno if Gawker hates him just to hate him and thus tried to smear him as actually gay, nttawwt, and also a rapist. if you're interested in BabyMetal, look up, on wikipedia, Japan's "Icon" culture.
Basically all these bands are pre-fab. They are "cute," and commit no sins, and are barred from being pictured or reported to be dating. People know this is fake, and everything's scripted, like pro-wrestling, but they don't care. BabyMetal, being 12-15 year old girls and innocent and cute, are just a metal version of the "Icons." The sign they make on their foreheads is the japanese sign for a fox. They did not want to do real metal devil's horns -- that is not cure nor innocent -- so their version is the sign of the fox. Also when they sing in the song "Gimme chocolate," that is not a metaphor for sex, or even love. They are actually just telling you they want chocolate. there are business houses in Japan that just create and script "icons." Hire the bands, create the image, etc.
video games in japan offer players the opportunity to create and manage their own -- scripted, pre-fab -- icons, and see how popular they can make them. I don't know how that would work -- do these games come loaded with a bunch of songs? how many? -- but apparently such games exist and are popular. so people are in on the joke, they know what's going on behind the curtain, but they also don't care. it's an interesting thing -- knowing a thing is inauthentic, but being able to make oneself enjoy it on an innocent level, as if one did NOT know it was inauthentic. I guess we have that in america with manufactured pop princesses and all, but it seems to have been taken to new levels in Japan. Posted by: ace at July 20, 2015 04:39 PM (bhepQ) 308

also, in america, pop princesses are routinely sneered at for being manufactured.
I'm not sure anyone would say that in Japan. If you said it, the response would be "Duh, dude, what other brilliant observations do you have to offer?" Posted by: ace ---- I went into a CD shop in Geneva and I nearly broke out laughing because I'm pretty sure I have more CDs in my house than they had in their shop. Despite my resistance to modern pop culture, this new comedy genius Amy Shumer has broken into my field of vision. I'd never seen a thing she'd done and only had the barest of bones of an idea of what she was about, but I'd formed an opinion anyway and I was totally right:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpsI8mWKmg this is why women aren't funny. This entire bit, and basically everything today's "hot" women comics are about is relatable only on a SJW level: this is thinly veiled bitching and whinging about the unfairness of it all. It's the furthest thing from funny, other than the catty attacks on women who get plastic surgery, kind of like how Chris Rock could do the best jokes making fun of black people. They should concentrate on ridiculing other women, which they well, instead of addressing sexual inequalities, which, however noble they may be, are not funny. 307 there are business houses in Japan that just create and script "icons." Hire the bands, create the image, etc.
video games in japan offer players the opportunity to create and manage their own -- scripted, pre-fab -- icons, and see how popular they can make them. Well, that's basically what's happening to American society on a daily basis, it seems. Our very core structure is being dissolved into nothingness by the white-hot heat of malice and idiocy, and the death throes are violent and very painful to witness. video games in japan offer players the opportunity to create and manage their own -- scripted, pre-fab -- icons, and see how popular they can make them. "Gawker's editorial integrity"
I laughed so hard my ass fell off. That reminds me. For some reason I was in a waiting room or lobby or something and they had the movie Dodgeball on. With the director's commentary. If you don't remember, Dodgeball is a super-goofy lovable loser movie. It's got Ben Stiller as an over the top villain gym owner. Vince Vaughn as a super slacker gym owner, and his gang of losers who try to scrape together some money to save their gym by playing a dodgeball competition. Anyways, the director wanted the lovable losers to lose in the end. It didn't test well, at all. So they made him tack on a happy ending. Whatever, it's a goofy movie. Nope. This tool is bellyaching about how his artistic integrity is compromised, and this Deus ex Machina ending is the worst ever etc. Dude. You made a grossout, goofy comedy with Vince Vaughn in it. You're not Akira Kurosawa. Posted by: bonhomme at July 20, 2015 04:59 PM (jhqr1) 399

I'm serious, they don't seem to do anything a traditional print editor ever did. They aren't growling at the authors to get more facts, or substantiate their work. They aren't forcing them to rewrite lines better, or check their spelling. What is their job, exactly? And yeah, the Japanese have taken manufactured pop beyond self mockery. *clambers up on stepstool of awesomeness* Gettysburg. A few weeks ago the idea of a Horde visit to the battlefield came up and a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to organize it. Clearly, the best thing to do is to consult everyone on dates and schedule it a month in advance. But really. So, someone got Her calendar cleared for this weekend and it's a go. I've always wondered whether the Hello! Strange murder story in Merced. Female doc, 38, her baby and 6 yr old killed plus another woman and child who were visiting. They arrested the father of the 6 month old. He's 30. She has 2 other kids and a 4 yr old son who died last Oct.
So this woman has 5 kids and hooked up with this loser bf. No mention of the father of her other kids. Wonder when she fd the time to practise medicine. Horrible case. Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at July 20, 2015 05:20 PM (iQIUe) 491
412 Fun fact: there is no all female band with a name that begins with N. (at least according to wiki)
Posted by: Bitter Clinger 448 4 Non Blondes is kinda close to beginning with an "N". There has to be one. Just to check, I hit wikipedia...nope. Nothing. Not US, not UK, not even Japan, nothing. This is like watching a game between two teams you despise: You're rooting for injuries. I'm not that nice. I usually root for one of the SMOD's smaller children to strike the middle of the playing surface during the game, vaporizing both teams and as many fans as possible. Because any ill-will I feel towards a particular team is mostly because of their fans being dickwads. Posted by: I R A Darth Aggie at July 21, 2015 09:01 AM (1hM1d) 553
