The US Military is Now Shifting to Hollow-point Pistol Ammunition

I've long wondered why we abjured using hollow point ammunition given that we never signed Article IV of the 1899 Hague Convention.. Plus 9mm hollow point ammo has come a long way in the last twenty years.

A military lawyer who made a presentation during the Industry Day noted that the United States is not a signatory to the Hague Conventions which outlawed the use of "dum-dum" and expanding bullets more than a century ago. It is the military's position that the shift to jacketed hollowpoint (JHP) ammunition, which more efficiently transfers energy to the target and which presents much less of a risk of over-penetration, is more humane and less of a risk to innocent civilians downrange in modern combat where there are often no clear front lines.

Over the Next 2 Years The US Army Will Lose the Equivalent of the Entire Romanian Army

9th Circuit Federal Judge Alex Kozinski Indicts the US Justice System

There are disturbing indications that a non-trivial number of prosecutors-and sometimes entire prosecutorial offices- engage in misconduct that seriously undermines the fairness of criminal trials. The misconduct ranges from misleading the jury, to outright lying in court and tacitly acquiescing or actively participating in the presentation of false evidence by police.

...Under Imbler, prosecutors cannot be held liable, no matter how badly they misbehave, for actions such as withholding exculpatory evidence, introducing fabricated evidence, knowingly presenting perjured testimony and bringing charges for which there is no credible evidence. All are immune from liability. A defense lawyer who did any such things (or their equivalents) would soon find himself disbarred and playing house with Bubba. The Imbler majority seemed reassured by the possibility that rogue prosecutors will be subject to other constraints.

...This argument was dubious in 1976 and is absurd today. Who exactly is going to prosecute prosecutors? Despite numerous cases where prosecutors have committed willful misconduct, costing innocent defendants decades of their lives, I am aware of only two who have been criminally prosecuted for it; they spent a total of six days behind bars.

Jack Neely: Was The South Ever Confederate Anyway?

Well Tennessee - and especially East Tennessee - definitely had ambiguous and conflicted feelings about secession and the Confederacy but I wonder if this was as true for the other Southern states.

People of European and African ancestry have been living in the South for 400 years. The Confederacy lasted for four years, about 1 percent of that time. And even during that 1 percent, a large proportion of the people who lived in the South-perhaps even a majority-were skeptical of the Confederacy....

The Confederacy was not universally popular, even in the South. It would be difficult to prove that as much as half the people who lived in the South in 1861 were fond of the Confederacy. Sam Houston, who grew up in East Tennessee and spent his entire life in the South-except when he was in D.C., representing Southern states in Congress-despised the Confederacy and denounced it publicly. David Glasgow Farragut and Gen. William Sanders-whose last names survive in multiple institutions in Knox County-both grew up in the South and fought against the Confederacy. Sanders, who'd spent most of his life in Kentucky and Mississippi, was killed by Confederate bullets. Several of Knoxville's fiercest Unionists, Parson W.G. Brownlow, William Rule, and Thomas Humes, were lifelong Southerners.

...In any case, in 1861 more than 30 percent of Tennessee's Southerners voted against secession, against joining the Confederacy. Well over 30,000 Tennesseans took up arms against the Confederacy.

On American r-lessness

In an America new to microphones, the unconscious cultural expectation was that public announcements were couched in a theatrical style - theatrical, as in pitched to be heard unamplified in an auditorium by hundreds or thousands at a time. That tone seemed as natural to people of this time as, for example, recording artists releasing packages of songs of roughly an hour's length called "albums" seems to us now despite that practice's roots in a particular physical technology now obsolete, or that pop music is today usually sung in a Southern / black cadence even by whites who don't speak that way in real life.

...Meanwhile, when today we find the old announcing style peculiar in terms of pronunciation, what is mainly striking us is a particular feature, r-lessness. That is, r's lost at the end of syllables, such that Carter comes out as "Cah-tuh." To Americans today, this sounds like Downton Abbey, such that we wonder why people in black and white or on old radio broadcasts sound "British" despite talking about Babe Ruth and Times Square.

Australian Woman Has Had 136 First Dates, But No Second Dates

Blonde Australian Belinda Stuckey is one of the most contacted members on the internet dating site eHarmony in her home country, but despite that she remains single.

Miss Stuckey, 35, has had more than 4,700 matches through the site and gone on 136 dates since she joined in December 2013.

But has never had a second date with any of them. Given that she's 35 and the clocks a tickin' perhaps she should reconsider her selection and rejection criteria just a bit. Because a second date does not equal marriage and it'd be hard to do worse than 0 for 136 anyway.

60 So, here in Colorado, there's an effort underway to legalize smoking reefer in restaurants and bars, where it's illegal to smoke tobacco. This does not surprise me. It would not surprise me if it passed. And it would not surprise me if smoking reefer inside suddenly became a basic civil right, thus forcing owners of restaurants and bars to tolerate pot-smoking on their property where they're forbidden to allow the smoking of tobacco.

My professional, expert opinion on this matter is: Eat a balls, hopheads; if I have to go outside to smoke, so do you.

Winston County threatened to secede from Alabama, especially if the state tried to impose a draft. Most of the military aged men did hide from the draft. A Union regiment (First Alabama Cavalry) is supposed to have been recruited entirely from Winston County. There used to be an annual performance of a play about the "Free State of Winston" during the summers years ago. Haven't heard of it recently, though.

On the other hand, 3 cousins became Civil War Generals: Granbury (originally from Mississippi), and Ben and Henry McCulloch (originally from East Tennessee). Go figure.

134 The article about the change in American accents interested me. I remember going to see a movie about the writer Dorothy Parker a long time ago and the actress who played her spoke in what I thought was a weird affected semi-Brit accent. (Parker was born in NJ in the late 19th century and lived most of her life in NYC.) I read a review of the movie and the reviewer said Parker really did talk like that.

I found it rather annoying, but not nearly as obnoxious as the "valley girl" accent I've heard young women from all over the country use - raising their voices so every sentence sounds like a question. I understand the term for that is "vocal fry."

166 60 So, here in Colorado, there's an effort underway to legalize smoking reefer in restaurants and bars, where it's illegal to smoke tobacco. This does not surprise me. It would not surprise me if it passed. And it would not surprise me if smoking reefer inside suddenly became a basic civil right, thus forcing owners of restaurants and bars to tolerate pot-smoking on their property where they're forbidden to allow the smoking of tobacco.

Well, quite possibly egg prices have bedeviled consumers, I rather doubt that the eggs themselves have. Perhaps it is an intended pun that simply falls flat. At any rate, "Avian flu has decimated almost 10 percent...". So, 1%, right?

Moreover, does this mean that the population of non-laying hens have survived without disease?

Great Heavens! Are there no editors remaining at the AC-T? I fully expect the opinion page to reflect an absence of rational thought, but surely there must be some competent, if graying, copy editor extant at the paper.

Most of the areas in the Appalachians didn't much care for the Confederacy.

They didn't care much for the Union either.

We are pretty much the "leave us the fuck alone" area.

Interesting tidbit. Roanoke, VA has the same number of Confederate memorials as MLK monuments, one of each.

I will have to say, we didn't see many Confederate flags around here in the past 10-25 years, but the last week we have seen a bunch of 3'x5' ones on the back of pickups all over.

I believe that the strongest feelings come from the places where the battles actually took place. The area from Richmond/Petersburg to Lynchburg to Danville is huge into it since a lot of major battles were fought in that area, and Appomatox is where it all ended.

Richmond's mayor (African American) is taking the right tone about the monuments in that they are part of history, and we need to remember history. He would also like to add some monuments to some prominent African Americans like they did when they added the Arthur Ashe one.

I find this comment to be quite surprising.

You seem to get that Boys will be boys. Where you apparently err is thinking that we mature and grow out of that. We don't.

We make more money and get to have better stuff as such as we age, but at base we are the same hyper sexed drooling idiots you remember from High School.

Oh, and the no Confederate flag idea over federal parks has some people really not happy. Which is exactly what Obarfy wants...to increase the divide. On the flip side, if you erase history no reparations and all that.

All "control" does is make me want what I never thought I'd want or wanted. I did not think about it until I was told "no."

244 Country Singer: 45 regiments of cavalry? How many did the Confederacy have in all? For example, there were precisely 3 Texas units engaged at the Second Battle of Manassas (or Bull Run).

The total White population of Texas in 1860 was 421,000. Is Wiki suggesting a full sixth of the state marched off to war? Their own article only mentions a fraction of the number of units claimed by name. Also. the suggestion that the German population around Austin abandoned the state for Mexico is questionable given the preponderance of old German and Alsation families from Austin east, and the predominant influence they have in community and county politics.

252 I will have to say, we didn't see many Confederate flags around here in the past 10-25 years, but the last week we have seen a bunch of 3'x5' ones on the back of pickups all over.

Same here.

I am about 50 miles from the headquarters for the KKK, and there are plenty of assholes around here, but in the two counties I drive through weekly, I had only seen one CBF. And it looks like it was put up by a kid, because it is very low on the porch post, about the height of a 10 year old boy. And it is faded and raggedy as hell, like it's been hanging there since the Dukes of Hazzard was in prime time.

This last week, there are shiny new ones flying every damn where and people are painting them on the sides of buildings! It's cracking me up.

258 I imagine the actual slow talking drawl from the Deep South/Delta/Tidewater as coming from a higher class of English settlers dealing with the heat and humidity.
Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at July 08, 2015 11:57 PM (j0kTB)

Yep. The fine book"Albion's Seed" goes into this. The Tidewater settlers were from the South of England, the landowners were in fact often the younger sons of nobility and the natives of Cornwall and Devon did have a drawl. The accent of the "hillbillies" came from the border regions of northern England, southern Scotland and northern Ireland.

British accents are still remarkably varied, considering the smallness of the UK compared to the USA. They were even more varied in the 17th and 18th centuries. A native of Cornwall and a native of East Anglia (where the Puritans who settled in Mass. Bay came from) would have had problems understanding each other - in more ways then one.

Our regional differences are, in a way, a continuation of much older cultural rifts in the UK. The Puritans, Quakers, Scots-Irish and Virginia aristos didn't much like or understand each other even then.

318 No way did 90,000 Texans serve in the Confederate army during the Civil War at any one time, certainly not in the battles to the east. The total military age population of the state was around 100,000. It is unlikely/impossible that they all dropped plows saddles and hammers and charged into the colors.

Of the approximately 90,000 OVERALL Texans who saw military service, many if not most never left the state, serving in home-guard formations, frontier units confronting Indians and Mexico, and expeditionary forces pushing west away from the conflict. The number of such forces serving in the Confederate armies to the east likely never amounted to more than a third of that number at a time.

My little nieces were trying on some little dresses. One of the ladies working that stall was about my age, and I was trying to admire her cleavage subtly, but then I glanced to one side and saw a younger gal working the stall staring at me accusingly. I made eye contact with this younger gal, and I suddenly found something completely unrelated at my feet to take an interest in.

You are right and I stand corrected. Texas sent 2,000 UNION troops to the Civil War and 70,000 Confederate troops. I don't know what I was thinking.

I always thought it was odd that only one Texas ancestor fought for the Confederacy even though quite a few were of military age. They were all in the Gonzales area, which is in South Texas, and has a large German population. This NYT article does a good job of discussing union loyalties in Texas and where they lay.

A fireman going into a house to save someone: hero. A cop going into danger to save someone: hero. A lifeguard going into riptide to save someone: hero. A soldier facing gunfire and being blown up for his entire deployment: hero grande. Getting your dick cut off so you can pretend to be a girl: not heroic.

The risk or danger he faces is that if he changes his mind later, it's too late. The thing is gone and ain't comin' back.

335 #317: I also think that's a yes.

The primary reason incest is taboo is inbreeding. But we've now officially severed sex from reproduction. Thus, I think we'll see a push to allow same-sex incest before we see a similar push for polygamy or bestiality.

And once same-sex incest is accepted, we'll of course have to allow opposite-sex incest, too.

And the same people who make fun of the idea of marrying your first cousin will be the biggest advocates of letting a dude marry his brother, because logical consistency is not something liberals worry about too much.

Don't be naive. Ten years ago it was a laughing matter to even bring up homosexual "marriage." The thought of two guys getting married was considered hysterical and rightly so.

Consent and age of consent are completely legal fictions, they are constructs of law. There's nothing whatsoever stopping that from being changed other than societal pressure. And all the same arguments used for homosexual "marriage" apply to these perversions as well. How can we deny them their love? How does it hurt you? Considering how boy crazy the high school girls I know are, I doubt it. It would promote heterosexuality and marriage, which would undermine the whole sexually liberated modern women thing the Powers that Be are promoting.

Bearing in mind that girls used to get married at that age, and quite a few of the mentioned high school girls could be mistaken for women. A man attracted to a girl at that age is attracted to the woman she is going to be, not the child.

Every day for a week he had some reason I had to do them, or pull-ups, and he'd be like thisclose while I was trying to do the pullups. I was so ashamed and scared. I knew my dad would kill him so I didn't want to turn him in.

Shit like that off and on your whole life, you get skittish.

Imagine a situation where you willingly went in, laid down, and a uniformed person sat a live rattlesnake on your chest next to your face. After it rattled for a while, they came and lifted it off. 1. Chelsea's pet beta male has the right POV on life to marry into the family.
2. Hollowpoint ammo for the military? I guess they are keeping the 9mm pistol after all, no matter what the gun rags say.
3. The US Army is shrinking to the levels of the 1870-1890 period where we had just enough troopers to make the Indians behave and operate the existing bases. I am sure our enemies are aware of this fact and plan to exploit it to the fullest. Note that the Pentagon paper shuffling division is not taking a hit...
4. That judge is not kidding. Given how Obummer's people treat people who aren't like them, he might as well give up and declare them all in contempt right now.
5. The Appalachian regions were not at all interested in the Civil War, and Tennessee had to expend a lot of effort persecuting the "nay" votes. We gained West Virginia as a state after most of the mountain-dwelling Virginians decided they had no interest in fighting for King Cotton.
6. After the first time Communism failed in America the Commies got smarter.
7. The white people in that "documentary" embarrass me a lot on general principle, and make me a little anxious for the future of the Republic.
8. Keith Olbermann let go for giving his opinion? Sounds like a good and fair decision by ESPN.

390 And anything new in the pipes for you? (Bookwise, I mean!)

Two books coming out soon. One is a fantasy adventure module for role playing games, so not a novel. That should be on the virtual shelves by the end of next week, God willing.

The second is a novel that should be out by the end of the summer at the latest. Two more editing passes, then the cover, layouts, and publishing. I'm looking forward to this one hitting the shelves, people are really interested in it.

I'm working on releasing a small portion of it for free as a teaser.

Could be worse. You could have the phobia one of my cousins has. Fear of cotton balls. Her brothers would tease her by putting them in her shoes. When talking to her and them about it I looked it up on my phone to see if the phobia actually had a name. It did and when I went to show her I didn't know that a picture hadn't loaded up. A picture of the classic grade school Santa Claus face with the cotton ball beard. She recoiled from my phone in horror. It was hilarious.

What genre novel?

Posted by: ConservativeMonster at July 09, 2015 01:04 AM (+2//H)

394 Evening, Horde! Hafta weigh in on the subject of Unionist Texans, seeing as how I'm writing a novel series featuring them... apologies if I've missed someone else covering these specifics. I don't remember where I got all of these stats, but I do know a bunch of them came from the Handbook of Texas History, and some I counted myself from online census records:

- Texas contributed two cavalry regiments and a battalion (of infantry?) to the Union. The First Texas Cavalry was commanded by a lawyer from Corpus Christi named E. J. Davis, who went on to become the governor under whom Reconstruction ended.

- Statewide figures on votes for secession (5 to 1 in favor--after a commission that was supposed to only recommend a course of action overstepped its bounds and drew up articles of secession instead) and on slave ownership (one family in four) really obscure regional differences. One thing I do in my author talks is to highlight 1860 census statistics that show the demographic and political differences between East Texas and Central Texas. Simplifying to round numbers from two counties:

+ Washington County (Independence/Navasota/Washington-on-the-Brazos): 15k residents, of whom 8k (~52%) were slaves; 95% of voters favored secession
+ Gillespie County (Fredericksburg): 2.7k residents, of whom 7 were slaveowners and 33 were slaves; 96% of voters opposed secession

There were areas further east where the white/slave ratio was even worse--in Wharton County, a full 80% of the 1860 population were slaves, and the 1850 census recorded no free blacks at all.

- Google/Bing the phrase "Treue der Union" sometime.

410 What genre novel?

Historical Supernatural Suspense. Here's the synopsis/blurb in progress

When the gas was delivered to a shower in Birkenau, the soldiers expected death, but what came out of that concrete chamber was far worse. Now the Fuhrer has demanded the monster be tracked down and destroyed, but a German scientist has other ideas for how it may be used for the third Reich. And the Werewolf has plans of his own.

Caught in the middle is the city of Krakow and its citizens striving to survive under the brutal, murderous Nazi regime. In that city is Aniela Wisniewski, a pianist feeding snippets of information to the British. As events unfold, terror spreads over the city with Aniela at its center, a terror racing to an inconceivable conclusion!

414 Here's another contradiction about the whole taboo of sexualizing teenagers...

A sixteen-year-old (at least in Colorado, and also, I'm pretty sure, in every other state) can get married without parental consent.

The primary reason for a sixteen-year-old to get married right now is early emancipation from the parents.

Under those circumstances, it is actually objectively better for a sixteen-year-old to marry someone older, rather than someone his or her own age. Because if two sixteen-year-olds get married, neither of them can buy a house or rent an apartment, or buy a car on credit, or even work a full-time job.

So, yeah, a sixteen-year-old girl looking to get married as soon as legally possible is objectively better off with an older man who can do all those things on his own.

I've been on the top of flat-roofed buildings, and I can't go within 10 feet of the edge. Because, you know, something might happen to make me lose my balance.

I've been fascinated with aviation and spaceflight since I was a kid, but I've only been in an airplane twice. Both were small single engine planes. The first time I was 16 and loved it. Vertigo has been an episodic thing for me. The attacks are coming more often.

People who have never had the experience do not understand how violent it can be. One moment everything is fine, then in half a heartbeat, the ground jumps up and smacks you in the face.

The Arch is one of the main reasons I don't think I'm actually acrophobic. Going up, being up in the top, fine. Looking out the window, fine. Leaning over to look down from the window? Yiiiikes... easier now than when I was little, but still not fun.

449 Well it has cooled down enough I may get some sleep. Gotta get up early tomorrow to help my ma grocery shopping. She's 80 years old and she has to ride one of those go-karts around the store, so I push the shopping cart and do all the grabbing, bagging, and unpacking.

I don't know how many more years I have left with her. Its one of the most horrifying things I've ever experienced watching her fall apart so quickly and age. I'm a big tough rough man but when I think about losing her I turn into a 5 year old clinging to her hand again. Gotta get all the moments in I can.

God be with you all.

450 Mike, I've been walking *across the hall* from a *closed* elevator and still suddenly felt like I was going to fall as I passed it. It really is not something easily understood from the outside.
Fortunately, the gold-standard vertigo med, meclizine, is available OTC as Bonine or Less Drowsy Dramamine (or generic equivalent).

451 Slap. Back in the early to mid '80s, I used to rappel off of skyscrapers for a living.

Part of the process of selling waterproofing repair contracts.

Over the side, down to the affected areas. Stick adhesive ruler to failed areas, photograph same. Cut out a 12" run of the failed segment, seal with new (but temporary) backer-rod and caulking, dress it out to seal, and take more photos.

The bits I'd cut out? Into the sample bag, along with notes as to the compass direction of that elevation, the floor number and which "drop" (the number of windows, left to right), from which said sample was removed.

I scared the ever loving *&$% out of more than a few women behind those windows.

And got not a few phone numbers, held up against the glass on post it notes, from the others.

I was rappelling, but not repellent.

I'm not "scared" as much as I am "captured", at times by a sudden imbalance brought-on by whatever happens within the brain.

Just a few years ago, I climbed roofs to pressure-wash siding. As long as I knew the sensation before the sudden loss of balance, I could brace myself and ride it out.

I avoided it by not looking out over the horizon, let alone down.

There has to be something going on with the inner ear, because I can experience this "out of nowhere" for no good reason that I can diagnose.

That's what I'm sayin'!

Posted by: Tom Friedman at July 09, 2015 01:53 AM (sdi6R)

484 Slap,

You're damn near right on in figuring out the problem.

The eyeball, the sense of your feet or ass on a level surface, and your inner ear, all want to "agree" on a common plane.

When one looks over the precipice of a tall building, or looks up at one from the ground, the following occurs:

* Lines of convergence, the eyeball factor. You're not looking at a level horizon, but rather, train tracks converging in the distance, but in the vertical aspect.

* Feet or ass, are level, but your eyes are telling you something different.

* Inner ear? Your head aint' level, lookin' up or down. You don't walk that way, do you?

The upshot is, the three interconnected, but now dis-related sensory inputs, kick your inner pinball machine to TILT! TILT! TILT! mode.

NOW CONVERSELY.

I get you out over the edge, and onto rappel. Nice hardwood seat under your ass. Ass is level, feet are level (though suspended in air), eyes are level, inner ear is level.

Guess what?

You can work out there all day, and be quite productive and effective.

Eventually, you'll even learn to "look down". Just don't do it, at first.

Piece of cake.

I'll give lessons. And still have the gear for up to a 400 ft. (appx 38 stories) height.

I've recently lost 15 pounds through fretting and pacing because of identity theft/cyberstalking. It started right before my eyes when Amazon started sending me a bunch of emails to "rate their service" on phone calls. Turns out that anyone knowing a name, address, and private email (generally found on every resume) can get Amazon to cough up all sorts of other data -- last four digits and expirations of every credit card on the account, prior orders, wishlists -- you can even reset the password. For certain ISPs, the last four digits of a credit card and expiration can reset the password on emails. Once someone is into emails, they not only receive updates on all your finances, but can also get you to bite on additional malware -- in my case, a delightful little keylogger called java/classloader that is polymorphic: continues to load and run different bad stuff day-after-day.

Turns out, however, that the individual responsible couldn't help but brag about his knowledge of my emails here, as well as misbehave in other ways that got him banned. So I'm pretty solid in knowing that "Ira Weatheral" is the guy. He wasn't very sophisticated back in his screwing-around-with-Amazon-idiots days, but he's been learning fast.

He is now routinely obscuring his IP address through proxies (he obviously missed the article where 4/5 of free proxies mess with their users....), but he's also been known to use 73.158.54.104 .

He's been posting here as "Joe Dirt" and "fromabroad" -- so he is very much engaged. And Morons should be very careful about clicking on blind links.

On the flip side, I had to liquidate a bunch of investments at places where the security was inadequate right before the markets took a dump.....so.....

During the War of Southern Hospitality rifled guns and new ammo (think the pointed musket ammo with the three rings around the base and cannons). It was designed to do maximum damage, sort of like hollow points today.

Speaking of the Civil War and the whole CBF. If we can just ban things from our past and get rid of them. Why not slavery? It never happened and ban all references to it. Boom this country is not racist anymore.

Not that any of this matters since we are headed for collapse. But yeah my point was buy hollow points. Anyone you are likely to have to shoot nowadays isn't gonna be following the Geneva Convention rules of war anyway.

503 Takeoff on any commercial airliner, with enough surplus thrust (by law) to effect takeoff on ONE ENGINE at MAX GROSS WEIGHT, ain't nuthin' but a cake.

Try it in basic flight training, in a Grumman Cheetah, on a 2,500 ft. strip, only 40 ft. wide, while your plane's wingspan is but 31 ft. wide.

In a crosswind. With but a four cylinder Lycoming giving you all she's got, which is very much barely enough.

Any, and I mean ANY commercial jet airliner, has so much more surplus thrust than is necessary for takeoff, that they can amaze you when lightly loaded, fueled and aggressively piloted.

Every single commercial airliner out there, is capable of nudging through the sound barrier in a shallow dive.

NOT recommended, as all kinds of shock-wavey things can happen to various control surfaces, making subsequent "pull out" a bit problematic for some airframes.

But, the point is, they've got the thrust and power.

Hell, the original Lear 25 had to have speed limiting sensors on the throttles, or the damn thing could fly fast enough to tear itself apart in midair.

Taking off is the easy part.

Landing that bitch, can be a bitch.

And Naval Aviators, are beyond human. Putting a 30,000 lb.+ F/A 18 down on a heaving, moving deck, in the midst of a driving rain? At night?

Though pulling the loud handle in those conditions is a death sentence, I'd likely yank that damn handle, vs. hit the ramp at 160+ mph.

I've only landed light aircraft on a narrow and short strip in the daytime, without adverse weather conditions.

Landing a heavy in a 40 kt. crosswind? Noooooooooooooo.

I'd rather rappel off of a damn tall building. It's MUCH safer!

I was a "Puke-Factory" until I was seven. A hearing test put them on the right trail and I was "good" through my twenties. Into my late thirties, I'd developed a sense of vertigo.

The worst part is trying to sleep and "falling" every night.

The sudden onset of imbalance can be counter-acted with reason and perspective. The "Falling Off The Bed" is involuntary and keeps me from getting a full night's sleep.

548 My ever-loving had vertigo from an inner ear infection when she was 45. The infection went away, but the remaining fluid would not drain which meant that the vertigo would not go away. She was literally going through hell.

She bad a tubes placed in her and theg finally drained. But the tubes were supposed to fall out and disappear in 6-12 months. After 18 months they were surgically removed.

Her ear drum(s) bled inxto her inner ear causing a new round of vertigo. More hell, but it did stop after a few weeks.

Neither of us ever want to go through that again (maybe her more so.)

Vomiting every time you stand up or just look sideways can surely ruin your life. But she knew that so many people (7 kids, 8 kids if you include me) depended on her, and that gave her the strength to pull through it. She is so much stronger than me. (But Hillary had to make hard choices, like not divorcing Wet Willy.)

Seriously, try sleeping on the floor. You can use one of those camping pads for comfort.

Alternately, do what raging drunks do to stop the bed spins. Put one foot on the ground. Of course, you may have to be raging drunk to fall asleep that way, so it's really a win win situation.

562 Had positional vertigo for 6 months.

You should be able to tell which side is dominant if you can't have someone watch your eyes and which way they move and where they start from.

That's the ear with the problem (we'll get to both in a sec).

When your vertigo starts twist your head quikly towards the ear and sometimes bending the neck down or back will also help.

This moves the little crystals that are at fault away from the sensor hairs.

if it's both then tip your head back or forward and that should slow the amount of time the vertigo lasts.

Experiment. those are twisty little channels and what worked for me may not work for you but the idea is to move the crystals away from the sensor hairs.

You can also determine the side by trying to force one to happen by leaning your head away or towards and see if that brings them on. Eventually they'll go away what you want to aim for is reducing the time that you are trapped and off balance.

Google is your friend google vertigo and you'll find out all the stuff I learned to get at mine.

570 My 6 months started on Jan 1. (yeah cute huh) I had not been drinking so I knew I had a problem.

woke up with the room spinning.

but I'd had this once before and knew some of what to do. It was pretty heavy for a while until the exercises and tilting my head finally started to take effect. I had to be careful how I moved my head so as not to bring on an attack when I was out in public or driving.

Having experience driving while semi intoxicated as a youth probably helped and I was also a sailor so I know to not depend on my eyes for balance. Even though it's the vestibules that are at fault, the problem comes about because they're hard wired into your eye muscles so your eyes react with the signal but you yourself can force a feeling of balance so you don't fall.

You don't want to try to stand on one foot during one but you can usually get to a supporting wall or something so you can stabilize and keep from falling.

I got to the point where I could short circuit an attack in about a second or two so to any one watching it just looked like I had the twitches.

Wonder if our Mayor fired anyone else over night.

Local polling on two local stations show a 7-3 public opinion against the firing of our Police Commissioner.

At least our interim Police Commissioner is white.
So we have a white guy to blame for the racists failings of the city government.

That whole Black mayor, black Chief, mostly black City Council, charging the black city cop with murdering the black known drug dealer, who was selling drugs to the black community, all because the city is racist was getting old.

590 Just fighting over a dead carcass. That is all that is going on.

It took the Soviets 70 years to deplete the real wealth that the Czars had built up. The Chicoms 40 years to deplete what little the Nationalist had built.

The norks, sandinistas, chavezuelans. cubans, lesser communists don't even count because there was no real wealth to plunder.

The United States is a different story. Someone who is a better qualified Economist needs to study this but I think the plundering could go on for over a Century here before we are back at square 1.

591 "I figured Flynn had an even money shot. Was I wrong. Last political campaign for me.

While it can be depressing, don't let it knock you out of the fight.

Here in Baltimore, our family put time, sweat and a lot of emotional capitol into the local race for County Executive.
Our conservative candidate did lose, but the incumbent SOB had to fight to keep his seat.

And while I put some effort into it, but not as much as the County Executive race, which we honestly thought we had a shot at, the heavily democratic State of Maryland turned around and elected a Republican as Governor.
A Governor who ran on the unapologetic platform of fiscal responsibility, and reducing State spending.

If you're in the fight, you may lose.
Hell, the odds are that you will lose.

If you're not in the fight, winning, even occasionally is not possible.

This may sound like self conflicting advice from a supporter of the LIB theory of how to move forward.

And in a way it is.

But, if you quit...the bastards win.

We have 19 Trillion Dollars in real debt. depending on who you want to believe we have 100 -200 trillion in unfunded debt.

How do you propose that be paid.

Here in Illinois the State Pension is in the hole foe 200 + Billion dollars.

There is no way short of hyper inflation that any of this debt can be repaid.

I am not in the LIB crowd.

593 "I am in the "it is already burnt crowd" The scavengers are just picking through the ashes looking for shiny baubles."

I tend to agree with you on that.

And I honestly don't do my deepest thinking at six in the morning, after the mental turmoil of a community meeting the night before has me so spun up that at 0430 I throw the covers off, and say "I didn't really need to sleep tonight anyhow".

And you bring up a lot of good points about how in the hell do we solve all these problems.

But, at some point, prior to Tim's defeat, you felt that if he won the nomination, and ultimately took office, that his victory would be of some benefit to the long term cause.

So, even if for a brief moment in time you felt there was a small smattering of hope.

Losing sucks.
And when it comes to the fight for the spirit and soul of this nation, my commitment and resolve ebbs and flows.
I hit high points...and I hit low points.

And those are the demons of my own making that I have to deal with.

Which means that I tend to sort of suck when it comes to offering advice.
Especially unsolicited advice.

But, it's what I do.
I muck through life, losing more often then I win.
But still, cherishing the wins.

Sometimes things get really bad. Sometimes they get inescapably bad. But the actions of one good man - even a flawed man who tries to be virtuous - during those times can reverberate through history. Maybe we can't win. Maybe we can still prevent the victory of evil.

Think of Valley Forge, and how every soldier must have struggled against thoughts of desertion. Think of John Paul Jones, every mast broken, and his ship leaking.

Think how it must have seemed to Samson, shorn of the source of his power, and driven whipped and naked into the temple, mocked by the priests of Dagon. How the victory of evil must have seemed so imminent, permanent, and inevitable. Now there is no priesthood of Dagon anywhere in the world entire.

There is something greater than every Earthly power, there is something going on in time and space, and it means destiny.

The most racist organization in the United States was once the English-speaking world's largest and most vociferous institutional supporter of slavery. It was the dominant political party in every state that seceded from the Union. It dominated post-Reconstruction politics, instituted the Jim Crow laws, and the KKK's membership exclusively came from it. For doing so much to further the cause of evil, it has never apologized, not even once. In the modern era, it's notable for a patronizing ethos that heavily implies that minorities can't take care of themselves and need an "enlightened" elite to do it for them.

The most racist organization in the United States is the Democratic Party.

Something about this story smells, and not of avocados.

I know nothing about Selleck as a person, but the story being given out is way short on details. Moreover, that much "theft" is an actual crime, so why aren't the police involved? Could it be because the water company has no actual evidence that ol' Tom was involved?

As an ex-Californioid, I lived through periods of water cutbacks, and remember the smug creeps who sanctimoniously went after "water abusers." Oddly enough, people who were at the top of the SJWs' BFF list were never called to account for their wastage. Celebs and city/state governments were never bothered when they watered the bejeebers out of their lawns, kept pools and fountains going, etc.

697 The complaint shouldn't be that Mooch is making improvements to the White House. Improvements and updates are going to need to be made from time to time. Point out the hypocrisy, don't just scream, "Mooch is wasting taxpayer money!" (Which she isn't, because it isn't being paid for by the taxpayers.)

700 Actually, in 2007, Democrat party leaders from North Carolina issued an apology for, among other things:

The North Carolina Democratic Party engineered and executed a state-wide white supremacy campaign in order to win the 1900 elections that was viscous, polarizing, and defamatory toward African Americans and that encouraged racial violence; and

WHEREAS, The effects of that campaign and the Wilmington Riots lasted far beyond 1898, paving the way for legislation that disenfranchised African American and poor white citizens, for lynching and violence against black citizens, and for Jim Crow segregation until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s;

Re: "Death Panels" and the execrable LA Times, they are lying their pathetic asses off *again* in pursuit of their latest history rewrite.

"Death Panels" were *NOT* funding for discussions of end-of-life-care, they were IPAB, boards that were set up to decide who would be rationed what care when shit inevitably got scarce after the government takeover.

They were removed from the law after criticism, the criticism was not "universally discredited," that is a giant bag of flaming horseshit. The description seemed over-wrought to the left, who just assume that a government panel should make decisions for you, but similar institutions in Europe and Canada already make decisions that result in withholding of care.

If there were ANY competition in "news" at all, everyone else would jump the LA Times' shit for this jackass lie. Instead, most of the press will collude to rewrite history AGAIN.

Hell, they've been getting away with it for decades, why stop now?
