The government is trying to prevent a 'market correction' i.e. bubble popped. Shares were up (doubled) within last year, and are still 30 percent ahead of pre bubble prices.

Of course it's not. China's economy has been in a debt-fueled bubble for quite a while (ghost cities, etc.). The stock market is not "measuring" the economy, but finally bowing to economic reality.
But the real point is this- however bad China's economy is or isn't, with this news coming on the heals of Greece's melt-down, it's going negatively to affect international markets. Those markets are already shaky, and don't have much resistance to negative inputs right now.

I, frankly, have never been all that impressed with Eugene. Some of his cobs are pretty incisive, but Eugene is too "lawyer" for me. He gives way too much deference to judges and legislatures, as though an unjust law or ruling *should* receive the same deference as a just law or ruling.

Don't feel bad, I tend to do steeping grains and minimash. I haven't had the money to buy the equipment needed to do all grain. (Or cheap 5 gal, aluminum stock pot won't cut it.)
I convert all grain recipes to minimash quite often (but my mash's are horribly inefficient due to lack of good materials)

Also there's a great "graft" cider recipe I have that takes about an hour to make (the boil is crazy short, since there's only 1/2 oz hops and the boil volume is small since you use 4 gal of apple juice.

Well, Meijer's in Ann Arbor is building a dozen or so charging stations next to their gas station. What's a Meijer's, you all may ask who don't live in Michigan or Ohio? It's a glorified K-mart. Slightly better looking Wal-mart. People shopping there typically are not driving Volts. Or whatever $60,000 tiny electric car is the hip thing to own at the moment.
You either live in a downtown area in which you walk in Michigan, or you live off of a freeway exit or along a two lane. None of which is conducive to paying tremendous amounts of money for an electric car.
But I'm sure Meijer's got some of their parking lot refurbishing paid by the taxpayers to put those things in.

The late great Milton Friedman made the same comment about anti-discrimination laws in general. He said that most individuals would not choose to discriminate as it would be economically disadvantageous but should be allowed to if they wish because...freedom. He also pointed out, that if there were truly discrimination in an economy (if women were truly only paid 70 cents for every dollar made by a man under the same circumstances, for instance) that that would present an arbitrage opportunity and you would have companies only hiring women. Barry Goldwater was right when he said that the anti-discrimination parts of the Civil Rights Act as they applied to private businesses ought to have been declared unconstitutional. We went from the state governments were forbidding businesses from serving black and white citizens together to the federal government compelling them to do so.
But allowing people to fail if they truly discriminate doesn't give control freaks the same joy as making people conform.

We got a hotel for the first two nights, because we figured she would be out by then. My Dad had to go back to work (her surgery was in Indianapolis). So, I stayed with her.
At the hotel, and eventually once I was staying at the hospital full time, I would go down to the lounge and clip coupons and read the Meijer ads, look up the MPerks deals on the internet. Sad as that may seem, this was one of those things that got me through a rough few days.
Having something to keep my mind on, plan, organize...it gave me something to do instead of sit there and worry.

Right after target opened a grocery section in a store near here, I decided to pop in because I needed some things that were cheaper at target and didn't feel like stopping twice.
They were out of:
Onions,
Tomatoes
ground beef
lettuce
I asked "when is truck coming?" (figuring I was there early and it might not be there for a bit longer.)
I was told "tomorrow or Wednesday."
Never bothered buying anything even remotely grocery at target again. They failed hard.

A good manager makes all the difference. My wife and I LOVED the Red Robin in Provo, UT--the servers were wonderful, the food was hot and cooked to perfection, they'd bring out fries while we waited, kept our drinks full--but the one here in Oklahoma City is just awful. Indifferent service, cold fries, unevenly cooked burgers, they never check come back to refill or make sure everything is okay. And the neighborhood WalMart nearest us is spotless with helpful employees, which is a thing I have never before seen.

there is one in tempe....it's a disaster.... there's one in chandler/gilbert that is meticulous and pleasant.....the tucson one is disgusting...... i was in one in georgia ....the toilets were overflowing and people were fleeing the bathrooms....as was the smell from what caused the toilets to explode.......and the bathrooms were by the entrance....it was lovely......

If you get their e-coupons and get into their Cartwheel discounts, you can actually find some pretty good deals at Target.
Unless you go to a Super Target, most of the Targets' food options are eh. So, I don't do a ton of grocery shopping there. But, if I don't have a long list, given the choice, I go to Target.
Their carts are a million times better than Walmart's. Smooth and quiet, compared to Wally's where seriously, every single cart creeks and/or has a loose wheel.
And, I am far from a proggy, but honesty....it is nice going to a more upscale, classy store than W/M sometimes. I go to W/M more often, so I am far from a snob about it, but man....some of the antics and people I see in there...it always reminds me why I don't want to go back. Lol.

no I'm making Brandon O's Graft cider.
Add some malt, light hops, and ale yeast. The cider is still dry-ish but not like that apfelwine (which I'm frankly afraid to even try based on some of the comments about it.)
Plus it doesn't take a year to cure, it can be drank right after fermenting even uncarbed (I prefer mine carbed and don't have a keg so I have to wait for the bottle process.)

Twenty years ago as our manufacturing industries folded shop and fled for Asian and Mexican pastures we were told those electronic communication and tech jobs were the key to America's future. They were jobs that Americans would not be "too proud to do". ITT Tech pretty much exists to give the workforce lots of home-grown cubicle workers. But in 2015 the big big boys are putting foreign nationals in those jobs, while American citizens sit home, collect unemployment and EBT from the government, and look for jobs that aren't there.
That's the worry and the problem, Thunder. The sweating jobs have long been taken over by illegals who are not citizens. Now the A/C jobs are going to legally imported non-citizens. What are WE supposed to do to earn a living?

When I was a kid, my parents had baby sitter stay with us for a couple days while my mom accompanied my dad on a business trip. She did the candle thing with us, if I remember it was a single candle in front of mirror in a dark room.

In American Manufacturing, the desire is to pay no more than 75,000/year for a qualified engineer. This would be a salaried position, with a 50 hour minimum work week, in addition to 24/7 on-call response including weekends and holidays.
Experienced engineers balk at those requirements at that pay scale, and new graduates can't perform the job. Hence, the desire for H1B labor.

Totally anecdotal, but....had a friend receive terrible care at an Ohio ER last summer, and after asking around she discovered that the ER at that hospital has outsourced the doctor staffing (to save money). The outsource company manages many ER staffs and they do this by hiring foreign doctors and placing them in an ER for 30 days, then move them to another ER. Would be interested to know how this squares w/jobs American won't do if this is the truth.

Yes, that does sound like a mess. I think you are better off having consistency in those types of situations.
There are a ton of staffing companies for medical workers, though. I used to get calls about them periodically until I changed numbers. There are traveling nurses too, who make a ton of money for going to underserved areas (the ones I knew are American).

My dad was a locum in rural hospitals for awhile when he was between full-time jobs--but he was good enough that they'd ask to keep him a second and third 30-day period until they got their new guy who was in it for the student loan reimbursement into place.

(3) Nobody has cake at a wedding. You have cake at a wedding reception. This has no more legal standing than a Sweet 16 party, slumber party or sex orgy.
(4) This is not a simple transaction like a taxi, hotel room or restaurant meal. It's not even picking up a cake at Sweet Cakes itself. This is an elaborate contracting of a custom order.
I think the Lawyer Class is really wedded to this idea of public accommodation, however there are several problems:
(1) It's a lie. It is. It ain't nowhere in the Constitution. Sorry. It's a lie.
(2) It's a convenient lie. I'm sure the Lawyer Class thinks that we'll just go to a crazy wild west where "We don't serve their kind here." is thrown around all over the place, I just don't see it.
(3) It's metastasized. It would be perfectly reasonable to pare it down as much as possible. While it's reasonable to assume that putting out a shingle requires you to serve people with on-demand requests (taxi service, restaurant meal, hotel room) a contracted service for an event that takes place much later is not reasonable. There are any of 100 reasons a contractor would say no to your business. At the very least, requiring someone to cater any possible party is inviting trolling of the worst kind. I can just see Muslims being required to serve a bar mitzvah...except that people care about their kids' bar mitzvahs and won't use them exclusively for trolling purposes.
(4) This puts a service provider in a position that a customer is not. Why is the customer allowed to be "bigoted" but the provider not?
(5) Gays are actually not discriminated against. Their median *household* salary is 20% higher than straights. No one ever hears of real discrimination except in the context of these contrived gay wedding controversies.

This doesn't bother me for the most part, however I think catering a wedding (or providing flowers) is very different from serving a person in a shop. Generally it involves more participation in the event, setup, tear down, etc...That's my main issue with this.

Last week was the worst week of the year for European stocks, it's not just a one day thing. And the Euro to dollar exchange rate is getting near record territory.
If/when a full Greek default happens things will go into overdrive.

Everything I have read says that all of the negative forces, weak economy in the US and around the world and the possible default of Greece have not been priced into the current market so if things proceed as it seems likely they will there could be a very large drop.
Question is, who would buy in this current market? Everyone knows the market has been bolstered by the Fed's policies and not true market conditions. If this pops the Feds and the IMF are pretty much out of tricks.

That's why I quit reading Althouse. It seemed like she treated actual events as hypotheticals whose constiuent parts were different than what had happened *in reality* and then argued from there.
I deeply appreciate her work covering the mob behavior during the Walker recall, but just couldn't stomach her treating decisions with consequences as classroom example cases that wouldn't have any effect after class let out.

That's the problem with accepting FedGov grants. Sure, they're "a private Baptist college," but they're so dependent on the Federal Government (from actual direct research grants to student financial aid) that they don't dare oppose the Secularist Orthodoxy.

As for religious colleges like Baylor and the Gaystapo if they allow ANY student to receive Pell Grants or any other type of government assistance the courts have ruled they are subject to ALL government regulations despite being a private school because they consider student aid the same as college aid. The courts ruled on this way back in a stupid title IX case. Another law that should have been repealed.
IOW it is a farmer growing wheat and effecting interstate commerce despite the fact that the wheat never leaves his farm.

There has only been one federal judge that I know of that has been impeached and none of the Supremes. Alice B. Hastings (C-FL) was impeached for accepting bribes. Caught red-handed, Left the court and has been elected to the House despite having a felony conviction.

Never going to happen.
My personal pet "never going to happen" idea to noodle over is granting the power to lower level courts to band together and tear down decisions made by higher level courts. The lower the court, the more have to band together to gut a decision.
This would hopefully allow a quicker teardown of the illegal, illogical, unconstitutional crap building up with nobody checking it.

There does seem to be a bit of that at least. Ace has done a good job of trying to see past the northeast corridor stereotypes of conservatives in the nearly 8 years I've been here, but it does seem like he doesn't have much *personal* experience with the non-costal types that make up the majority of the commentariat.
