Obergefell v. Hodges

Gun rights groups find a side to gay marriage ruling that will make liberal heads EXPLODE

The headline is hyperbolic, but it does bring up a good point: A consistent reading of Obergefell SHOULD result in CC permits from one state being recognized in all 50 states. Will it? I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Defensive Gun Use of the Week

AK-47s SAVE LIVES: Las Vegas Man Uses Iconic Rifle To Successfully Defend Family During Home Invasion

Despite cries from gun control supporters, agenda-driven politicians, and a smug-but-ignorant media that intermediate caliber, semi-automatic carbines are “weapons of war” with “no legitimate civilian use,” firearms such as the AKM and the ubiquitous AR-15 are in fact excellent home defense firearms, and are the preferred home defense firearm of many tactical firearm trainers and expert shooters.
These personal defense rifles are low-recoiling, have a decent magazine capacity, are short enough (in carbine form) to be very maneuverable, and they much easier to shoot with reasonable combat accuracy under high stress than handguns. Rifle bullets  also carry far-more fighting-stopping energy than pistol bullets, typically meaning that home defenders have to make fewer hits to stop attackers. Amazingly, while it may seem paradoxical to some, using these rifles can deliver more energy to target than any pistol, yet pose a lesser risk of over-penetration compared to common handgun ammunition if fragmenting hollowpoint ammunition is selected.

I wonder if the victim defended himself with a foreign made AK, or a homegrown one?

Not NO, but HELL NO!

Obergefell was purely arbitrary. Any published opinion on 'rational' was purely out of the SCrUTUS tradition of having to publish something rather than recording a voice vote.

4 Oh perfect timing.

I was thinking of asking for a .22 "plinking" gun for Christmas.

Obviously the Ruger 10/22 is the stand buy in that category. Anyone else got any recommendations?

Price does matter (We have a 6 month old after all) Holding in that 10/22 price range ($225-250) or even lower would be great.

I always loved the expression "wreak havoc" ever since I was 16 and in Driver's Ed(ucation). They showed a film of crash-test dummies going through windshields upon impact and the narrator casually mentioned how the broken glass can wreak havoc on one's head, face, neck, and body. Indeed, thought I.

I would think that Obergefell should pretty much strike down all state laws entirely.
Why should one state have higher tax rates than another? Higher speed limits? Different age of consent?
Why aren't all those protections equal???
Stupid effing decision.

22 There's no statement in the Articles that all states must give full faith and credit to any contract made in another state. Only marriages.

Since states can have different rules about discharging a firearm it is only proper that nobody tote a gun in a state without knowing when, in that state, it is legal to shoot someone. Florida will apparently give you 20 years for a warning shot.

They are all good weapons. I would go with:
a) The one that feels good in your hand and which you can easily operate with one hand; and with either hand.
b) The one that you seem to naturally shoot the best with.
c) The best quality you can afford.
d) The one that is easiest to take apart, clean and reassemble.,

And then when you get a real weapon, a model 1911 in .45 we can talk some more.

JUST kidding!! They're all good weapons and I'd be damn happy to have any one of them.

In oddball ammo, this:

SCMITR was part of an experimental military shotgun ammunition created in the 1970s by AAI Corporation. It was a variation on flechette ammunition, but instead of containing a bundle of tiny needle-like steel darts, the cartridge contained a stack of razor-edged stamped sheet-metal arrow shapes designed to fly aerodynamically. It was considered to be very promising (in terms of lethality and effective range) but prohibitively expensive to manufacture, so it has never been mass-produced.

I believe they recently amended the law to allow 'not killing' the other guy as justifiable use of force (to claim immunity...). Still no warning shot, but you can try to hit and stop an aggressor.

43 Warning shots are an incredibly bad idea. Once the bullet leaves the muzzle, you have no control over its final point of impact. So yeah, you ought to get hammered by the law for warning shots.

Warning shots were forbidden under the use of deadly force training I got in the Navy.

If the situation is bad enough to draw your weapon, it is serious to shoot to kill. If you are unwilling to do so, reconsider carrying a firearm for protection.

If this is a first rifle and you want to slow things down then go with the bolt version Ruger All-American in 22LR. Magazines are compatible.

Upgrade options.....Ideally get a version with a threaded barrel in case you ever want to get a suppressor.

If you want a premium match grade accuracy 22LR bolt then look at the CZ 455/452 models.

This dragoon somehow escaped the 91/30 conversion, and has no import marks, so it's kinda unusual. It was neglected by previous owner, so it took four days of cleanings to get all the rusty crap out of the bore. I even had to use one of those Hoppe's steel "tornado" brushes, which I wouldn't dare ever use on a precise rifle, but this gun is just for fun. So if you don't hear from me again, I probably got blown up.

91 You're right about the aftermarket parts issue. If you think you'll want to do a lot of customizing, nothing's going to match the 10/22.

Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at July 05, 2015 08:03 PM (qNZ3I)

Not sure how much customizing I'd want to do. Dependign on sights, maybe a new set, and possibly (but I'm not sure) an adjustable trigger.

92 "My first, and still current plinker, is a Remington 511 Scoremaster." I have a 510, manufactured one month after the Pearl Harbor attack. I do wish it had sling swivels, but I'm going to leave it in original stock condition.

For a first timer looking for plinker, 10/22 is a safe bet. It's the most popular rifle ever, and has tons of third-party accessories and mods available. It's more accurate than 99% of the people who shoot it.

Posted by: gp at July 05, 2015 08:30 PM (mk9aG)

93
+1 for the 10-22. But stay away from aftermarket non-Ruger magazines.

Although there's a shit-ton of aftermarket accessories for the 10-22, only one is absolutely 100% essential, the auto bolt release lever. Why Ruger doesn't change the shitty stock bolt release is a mystery. Luckily, it's cheap and easy to install.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at July 05, 2015 08:44 PM (egLDQ)

94 10mm? thousands of 'em.

The EAA/Tangfolio/CZ variants are *really* nice. The bore is a little high, so recoil is a little heavier with full-power loads (like Smiths).

For that reason and the polymer frame, the Glock will have less perceived recoil. A lot less if it's ported.

But they are both reliable and accurate. If you require a manual safety for some reason, the Glock's not for you.

You can do almost anything with a 10mm, unless you have short fingers, and then you're kind of boned. The caliber keeps making small comebacks but basically got creamed in the Caliber Wars by the 10mm Kurz, AKA .40 SW. That means it's not cheap and not always on the shelves.

Looked to be a good bang for the buck.

vinylman, if still here, you had good advice from others above. Get what *you* like, and shoot, best. They're all fine platforms, all can get the job done. Remember *you* are the most important part of the system, and improving/maintaining your skills and understanding is the biggest part of this equation.

gp - nice. So, a dragoon, not an ex-dragoon? That IS unusual - esp. sans import marks.

For bore rescue, consider electronic bore cleaning in addition to every other assault you can imagine - Butch's, lead remover, plugging the bore and soaking it in Kroil for a week (after you've scourged it with the solvents). Then electronic bore cleaning (look around the web, easy if you have an old cell phone charger or the like available).

101 I think not an ex-dragoon. It has the original steel Tula-stamped barrel bands, plain blade/no globe front sight, Konavalov rear sight calibrated in arshins, low handguard. Has recoil bolt; stock is sound. Sling escutcheons screwed in. None of the serial numbers match. Cleaning rod missing. Does not have the "Ka3" Cossack mark. Looks like it could stop a Buick.

Don't discount the liberal ability to exist in harmony with cognitive dissonance, Emanations and penumbras are only visible when they destroy society and violate the Founder's intents. Clearly, the Founders, being reasonable people, never really intended that average citizens should be allowed to possess personal weapons, but actually meant that Second Amendment language to mean that Government Militias should be trained and armed to crush any citizens that got out of line!

All good choices. You might want to try a SIG. Some people find that the first time they hold one and shoot it they just go, yes, this is the one. There is a SIG model 2022 which is actually affordable.

The pistols you mentioned are full sized service pistols which are easy to shoot and absorb the recoil but they are not as easy to conceal you might consider the Ruger LC9 and SCCY 9 mm pistols. The Ruger has a single stack magazine and the SCCY double column holding 10 rounds. Both are about the same size which is almost identical to the size of a Walther PPK firing the less powerful .380 cartridge. These pistols will fit into a pocket or in a holster they can be concealed more easily than the larger guns.

107 Gp - As a 15 year-old, I was taken by all of the fancy guns that I would see in The Shooter's Bible, and so set out to fancy-up my 510. In retrospect, that may not have been wise. I could not afford any checkering tools, and so made my own.

The result was not great, but not bad for a 15-16 year old kid. The white line spacer is a piece of linoleum tile. The bolt handle is from a Model 513.

110 96 and 106 Thanks for the responses. All good just seems to be a lot of favoritism towards certain makes so thought I might flesh some of that out here. For now I'm just looking for home defense and to become familiar and competent handling a gun. After that I'll consider concealed carry licensing and subcompacts then. Before that I'll want to follow this first pistol purchase with a shotgun.

111 When I was much younger, I used to refer to my older brother's 22 as the "Laser-gun". Not for how accurate it was (and it was) but for how the empties shot out quite energetically and at the same time hot enough to raise welts. It wasn't a genuine Winchester, but the Sears Ted Williams model. Great 22.

113 My vote for a good .22 plinker would be the Marlin Model 60. Very nice out of the box, accurate as all heck and generally less expensive than the Ruger 10-22.

The Ruger is a good gun if you want to hot-rod it with aftermarket accessories. The Marlin is great right out of the box.

I shoot a lot of .22 (3 rifles, 3 handguns). Just added the one I have been wanting for a few years - brand new SW Model 17 Masterpiece.

131 For a plinker consider a Marlin 795. It has fewer after market items but you can get a bullpup stock that looks super weird.

The 795 is pretty much the 60 with a ten round removable box magazine instead of the built in tube magazine.

132 Greetings:

My first rifle was a Remmington 500 which was very similar to your GOTW which brought back to mind this personal anecdote.

I grew up in the Bronx of the last '50s and '60s but was fortunate to be in a family that had a summer bungalow about 60 miles north in Putnam County. Thus, I had the benefit of both an urban culture and a country culture.

Spending summers upstate, my friends were country boys, used to going into the woods, camping overnight, and having our days to ourselves with no threat of nearby adult supervision.

Before long, I wanted to acquire the local accoutrements, guns and knives being my highest priorities.

My city-girl mother wasn't having any of it; my father, born in Ireland and a WWII graduate, quickly became my only chance for a successful acquisition. Initially, I separated him from his "war-knife" and subsequently began working on him for a 22 caliber rifle.

When my mother found out that my father was having me join a gun club in preparation for my new tool, he and my mother had a rather intensive dinner time discussion about the appropriateness of a relative youngster having his own firearm.

My mother insisted that this was no way to raise a child. My father's conclusionary statement was "I'm not raising a child; I'm raising a man."
