Scientists say about a theory so disconnected from reality that it can't even be tested that it's "not even wrong." Vox pieces are not even wrong. They're not intended to be taken seriously. They are, as Jeff Goldbum described writing articles for People Magazine in the movie The Big Chill, calculated to be read in the time it takes the average person to take a shit. This just continues the frivolous left's frivolous practice of posting nonsense to get outrage clicks. The main reason the revolution was a mistake is that the British Empire, in all likelihood, would have abolished slavery earlier than the US did, and with less bloodshed. Abolition in most of the British Empire occurred in 1834, following the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act. That left out India, but slavery was banned there too in 1843. In England itself, slavery was illegal at least going back to 1772. That’s decades earlier than the United States. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Let true Christians then, with becoming earnestness, strive in all things to recommend their profession, and to put to silence the vain scoffs of ignorant objectors. Let them boldly assert the cause of Christ in an age when so many, who bear the name of Christians, are ashamed of Him: and let them consider as devolved on Them the important duty of suspending for a while the fall of their country, and, perhaps, of performing a still more extensive service to society at large; not by busy interference in politics, in which it cannot but be confessed there is much uncertainty; but rather by that sure and radical benefit of restoring the influence of Religion, and of raising the standard of morality. It was mainly cotton that spurred the slave trade. Know how much cotton is grown in England? Almost none, since cotton requires a warm climate -- like those in India and the southern U.S. states. If the American colonies had remained part of the British Empire, there still would have been a big demand for the cotton produced here -- and manufactured into textiles in Britain -- and that means there still would have been slavery here for most of the time that there was (and perhaps even longer).
The British didn't outlaw slavery before we did because they're a better or more moral people than we are. The British got rid of it sooner because they had less economic need for it on their cold, small, non-cotton-producing island. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at July 03, 2015 09:45 AM (kGrdk) 79

To understand how this Vox trip e was written and posted (do we think there's at least one editor who read and approved it?) you should read the transcript of Hugh Hewitt interviewing one of these young DC intellects.
It's not only that they're ignorant, it's that they don't care to learn more about the subjects in which they write. They think it's perfectly OK relying on what they recall from school + discussing it w/other writers (whom they consider experts) + an hour or so of research on the internet. ______________________ But only because he would have gotten married and moved away from Wyoming with his gay husband, so that he wouldn't have still been dealing drugs and turning tricks and ripping off his fellow Wyoming drug dealers and making them mad enough to beat him to death the way they did. Of course, since psychologists tell us that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, there is a good chance that Matthew would have ended up in the same activities in the new state that he moved to, and so it's possible that both he and his gay husband would have ended up beaten to death by enraged drug dealers that they'd ripped off. 4th of July Eve! Tonight, Uncle Sam slips down the chimney of all the good little citizens and leaves them gifts of hot dogs, cherry pie, star spangled banners, ammunition, books by Mark Levin, and tons and tons of bright, noisy, colorful fireworks. Tomorrow morning, the little citizens will rise from their beds in joyous anticipation of the day. They will run to look under the Liberty Tree (well watered) for their gifts, to marvel and share with one another. Although the celebrations will be enthusiastically boisterous, ceremonies and sermons will remind us of the solemn cause for our celebration, that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, and about instituting government which secures those rights. Then we end the day in prayer, thankfulness, and worship. Merry Independence Day! Posted by: !mindful webworker - jingle sparklers! jingle sparklers! at July 03, 2015 10:11 AM (HGnKA) 172

I am sure the left prefers absolute monarchs to the whole messy democratic process. They don't like personal responsibility and find freedom burdensome. With freedom, there are just too many choices and some people don't do what is good for them, and we can't allow THAT. Yes, a monarch, even a constitutional monarchy is preferable to the state-worshipping, know towing, sheeple of the left. Yes, let's call the lefties what they really are: traitors. I don't care. This is the greatest YouTube video ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_8mdH20qTQ Everybody can put down their cameras and iPhones now. The Internet has been won. The gradual appearance of the cat and the double take of the pilot are priceless. Be sure to read all of the comments, which, as you'll note, are worldwide. The pilot, Romain Jantot, explains what happened very clearly. He was giving 20-minute plane rides to paying customers. It was his passenger's first time in an airplane. There was a video camera mounted in the plane to record the experience for the customer. (My dad bought me a similar plane ride when I was 16, but I didn't have the video feature.) The cat was a mascot who hung around the airport. The pilot knew her. So Jantot's reaction wasn't so much "Holy shit, there's a cat in the wing" as much as "WTF are you doing there?" The perfect storm of events for an Islamic terror attack is brewing for July 4th this year...It was on the 17th of Ramadan, which just happens to precisely coincide this year with America's Independence Day, that the greatest and most significant battles in Islamic history took place: the Battle of Badr in 624 AD. Apart from the logical fallacy of weighing the destinies of entire nations based solely on whether slavery was abolished in 1843 or 1865 (a difference of 22 years, which is trivial when you consider that slavery had been around for thousands), it overlooks a lot of inconvenient facts with regard to Britain's attitude towards slavery.
Yes, Britain partially abolished slavery in its empire in 1834, but that's no different from the partial abolition of slavery that was taking place state by state in the US throughout the republic's antebellum history. Britain finally got around to "abolishing" slavery in India in 1843, but that was more of a legal formality than a hard fact. Though it was not legal to own a slave, it wasn't illegal either, hence it was fully acknowledged that much slavery continued unabated and British colonial administrators turned a blind eye to it in the interests of not creating tensions with powerful natives. This gradually became embarrassing back home, and the Indian Penal Code of 1860 at last made the act of enslaving another person illegal in British India. This did not come into effect until January 1, 1862, so the real difference between Britain and the United States with regard to slavery is about three and a half years. Ah, but there's more. Throughout the American Civil War, the British government tacitly supported the Confederacy, even going to the extent of building and supplying attack ships for them like the CSS Alabama (for which they later had to pay $15 million in damages to the US, about equal to the amount the US had paid Mexico to acquire California and related territories in 184. They did this with the hope of keeping the United States weak (to explain why they did this, remember that the Polk "54-40 or fight" brouha had happened only 15 years earlier), but the effect was to prolong slavery in North America by keeping the Confederate States above water. Britain shares the guilt in that, just like America. Furthermore, British policy towards slavery was complicated by their later colonial acquisitions. These places often had long traditions of slavery, and British administrators were reluctant to intervene in them and provoke unrest or rebellion. Hence, slavery continued to exist in the British Empire long, long after it had disappeared from the United States, with the quiet assent of the British government. Slavery abolition happened in these places in a piecemeal fashion, often district by district as British colonial authorities became more confident in the grip they had on their rule and therefore felt more at liberty to impose Western standards on native behavior. Slavery was not thoroughly abolished in Malaya until 1915. Burma finally saw the end of slavery in 1926. The British did not abolish slavery in the Protectorate of Sierra Leone until January 1928; as late as 1927, Sierra Leonean slavers were acquitted in a colonial court (decision by Judge Aitken) on the grounds they had done nothing illegal. Vox knows nothing about anything this, because Vox. Posted by: Richard at July 03, 2015 11:23 AM (RChoF) 343

In view of how much British policy towards slavery was governed by fear of stirring colonial unrest, it must be doubted whether they would have attempted the empire-wide abolition of slavery in 1834 (or later) had the American colonies remained within the Empire after the putative failure of the American Revolution. Southerners were clearly willing to fight against what they perceived as outside intrusion in their social customs.
Since the British were willing to tolerate slavery in their colonial domains as late as 1928, it could be that the American Revolution actually accelerated the abolition of slavery in the Western Hemisphere, by placing its North American destiny in the hands of a people (North and South) who proved they were willing to spill blood over it, while the fate of Caribbean slavery was detached from Southern interests and hence more easily solvable by British imperial governance, who never demonstrated any willingness to go to wide-scale war over the issue. I'm pretty sure this is a piece designed to discredit, ahead of time, any talk that justifies action against the Establishment by referencing the Revolution, by discrediting the Revolution. The SPLC is already in this business--however, folks who harp about voting rights endlessly are going to have a tough time explaining why a rebellion against not having any political representation at all was illegitimate. Though I'm sure they will try.
Did Vox ever consider the fact that the actions of the British in emancipation were not made in a vacuum? That year of emancipation was 1833. They occurred at a time when England was holding firm on greater expansion of the franchise, and many had fought against the Reform Act of 1832--in other words, the propertied elites were fighting a losing battle against the common man, a fight which would go on for many more decades but which would ultimately end in 1945. Hmm...1832, 1833. I wonder if there was anything going on somewhere else in the Anglosphere that might have put a little bit of pressure on the monied classes of Britain to sacrifice some things. Anything at all--like a commoner becoming ruler of a nation, and who won a battle against monied interests, which could serve as an inspiration for those in England? Sacrificing West Indian slaveholders to keep the franchise from expanding at home was probably a very easy choice for Parliament, lest folks think what was going on in America could happen in England. And forty years after 1787 served as an inspiration for 1789. I wonder if Vox ever thought of that. Idiots. Posted by: "Old Hickory" at July 04, 2015 01:21 AM (UKhBB) 362
