Reporter Misreported Nobel Scientist Tim Hunt's Words, Then #SocialAttentionWhores Just Ran With It Until They Forced His Resignation

Unbelievable. According to a third-party EU official, and Sir Tim Hunt himself, she took words out the context, and concealed the fact that Hunt's remarks were jokes at his own expense.

The Guardian has now heavily re-edited this Social Attention Whore's story to make it less defamatory -- but the Guardian doesn't alert you to that, contrary to its own claimed rules.

Hunt has now resigned from his important work in cancer research. And this Social Attention Whore got her scalp.

New revelations about the speech and the context of the joke have surfaced. An account of a European Commission Official who took detailed minutes of the event adds key information absent from the original report:

According to the new account, Sir Tim started with: "It's strange that such a chauvinist monster like me has been asked to speak to women scientists” which makes clear he mocking sexism, rather than indulging in it. St. Louis reported this as Hunt simply admitting: "he has a reputation as a male chauvinist."

Immediately after the now infamous joke, according to the new evidence, he proceeded to make several very pro gender equality remarks, including: "Now seriously... Science needs women and you should do science despite all the obstacles, and despite monsters like me," which was similarly disregarded in St. Louis's twitter report.

Hunt has already protested that he added, "now seriously" to indicate the joke was over.

The Daily Mail is now vetting this #SocialAttentionWarrior, Connie St. Louis, and finding lots of troubling facts.

Then, early this week, the simmering dispute took a further, seismic twist.

It came courtesy of The Times newspaper, which revealed the contents of a leaked report into Sir Tim's fall from grace compiled by an EU official who had accompanied him to the Seoul conference.

This individual, who has not been named, sat with him at the lunch and provided a transcript of what Sir Tim 'really said'.

Crucially, it presented a very different take to the one which had been so energetically circulated by Connie St Louis.

...

However, Sir Tim's critics remained unmoved and disputed the EU report's contents. Importantly, given how the scandal had originally emerged, they were led by Connie St Louis.

...

Perhaps, therefore, we should ask two other related questions: who exactly is Connie St Louis? And why, exactly, should we trust her word over that of a Nobel laureate?

A good place to start is the website of London’s City University, where St Louis has, for more than a decade, been employed to run a postgraduate course in science journalism.

Here, on a page outlining her CV, she is described as follows:

'Connie St Louis . . . is an award-winning freelance broadcaster, journalist, writer and scientist.

'She presents and produces a range of programmes for BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service . . . She writes for numerous outlets, including The Independent, Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, BBC On Air magazine and BBC Online.'

All very prestigious. Comforting, no doubt, for potential students considering whether to devote a year of their lives (and money) to completing an MA course under her
stewardship. Except, that is for one small detail: almost all of these supposed 'facts' appear to be untrue.

I've quoted too much so I'll leave you to click on the Daily Mail to see what's untrue.

Think about the sort of person who becomes a Social Attention Whore.

Think about the psychology at play.

Then wonder: Why do we ever give these unaccomplished, envious, grasping monsters any credence at all?

However, the people who do this sort of thing (fake rapes, fake slanders, fake racist or other rattacks) in which real people are hurt and their lives are ruined are so needy that they have become the instruments of the Father of Lies who comes to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). They need prayer and perhaps in some cases an exorcism. They certainly need a transformative spiritual experience They also need to be beheld accountable for the destruction they do, but their own particular "tribes" or groups never seem to do that. As long as they advance the narrative anything is allowed.

69 NEVER CAVE IN TO TO SOCIAL MEDIA MOB.

His problem is that he cringed, and resigned.

He should not have, THe whole thing would have blown over in 36 hours.

It shocks me that not everyone knows this.

The social media mob is actually completely powerless.

They only acquire "power" when other people do to mob's bidding.

The mob itself can't get anyone fired. All they can do is TRICK people into thinking the mob has power, and then those people will do what the mob demands.

A good metaphor is this:

A man who has no gun approaches two people. He sticks his hand in his coat pocket, makes a guns shape with his finger, points it at the two people, and says, "I have a gun -- do what I say!"

In fear, they raise their hands and obey him.

The man pretending to have a gun then orders one of his victims to go get a real gun. He does so. Then the man pretending to have a gun orders the first guy to shoot the second guy dead. And threatens to kill the first guy (with his pretend-gun) if he does not obey the command.

So the first guy shoots and kills the second guy.

The man pretending to have a gun then runs away.

Question: Did the man pretending to have a gun actually shoot the victim? No. He tricked someone else to do his bidding for him.

is he responsible for the crime? Yes. But in reality he did not have the physical power to commit the crime. He used deceit to trick others into committing the crime for him.

That is what happens 95% of the time with social media mobs. They get bosses and organizations to kill their employees. Or get people to commit career suicide. Despite the mobs itself being completely powerless in physical reality.

72 There are several reasons why there are no right wing equivalents of the Social Just Us Warriors. The first is that despite what the left thinks - people on the right tend not to be evil. The second is that people on the right don't go in for "group think" - we might reach the same conclusions as others on the right but they are generally reasoned conclusions. Third, the left depends on appeal to emotion - the right depends on appeal to what is reasonable. Fourth the left is sent into action by slogans - the slogans the right responds to tend to be things like "Remember the Alamo"; the left responds like "mean girls" the right like those being called to arms. Part of the reason the Republicans try not to see "a hill to die on" is that they realize that phrase can easily become literal.

All of the above doesn't mean that we don't need to talk about ways to stop the SJUWs.

As a not-lawyer, here's how I understand it. (in the US, granted, britain is way different)

If you're a public figure, you have to prove that the alleged defamer knew that what they were saying was false (or was ridiculously negligent in 'fact checking'), and INTENDED to (with malice) ruin the persons life / get them fired / ruin their reputation / whatever.

So "misquoting" someone... I don't know.

Like when George zimmerman sued nbc/abc/cbs (whoever it was who edited the 911 tape) -- he couldn't PROVE that the editors acted with malice. Because how do you prove something like that without a signed confession or something along those lines?

Very difficult.

And any lawyers who want to correct me, feel free.

It's much easier to talk about these sorts of things in person, at any rate, where you can moderate your tone and answer things directly.

I am not on twitter.

But I'm afraid their are too many people who really don't want to get into it but are massively irritated by the pressure they feel to silence their opinions, lest they get labeled a bigot of some sort. So it's frustrating. At some point, people are going to be so fed up they stop caring about being polite (and start getting real

In American academia, there was once a time when there was an unwritten but nevertheless powerful traditional rule that the head of the Harvard Law Review would contribute at least one signed article to the published product.

Which had held sway for over a century, unbroken.

That too was eventually "given a pass" when a particular individual of a particular ethnic background decided he just couldn't be arsed to do the actual scholarly work and writing required.

Oh! And from the same ethnic background as St. Louis, too. I sense a recurrent motif.

Contrast of two women in science:

Felisa Wolf-Simon - Wholly funded by NASA, "discovers" arsenic-eating bacteria. Findings "peer-reviewed" and published in Science magazine. There follows a huge public roll-out by NASA. Big production, table of scientists all touting the huge discovery. Lots of commentary about the significance, blah, blah. She is celebrated as emblematic of government spending on 'science!'.

She even received an award from The National Academy of Science.

Meanwhile, independent researcher Rosie Redfield reads the article in Science magazine and says, "What?! That sounds like complete bullshit."

Redfield, all on her own, proceeds to disassemble and disprove Wolf-Simon's methodology and conclusions. Wolfe-Simon did sloppy work, and was motivated by her desire to 'find' something unique. Result? Fantasy and erroneous result.

Neither Wolf-Simon, nor NASA, nor Science Magazine, nor any of the 'peer reviewers', to my knowledge, ever stepped up and said, "We're naive, and mis-motivated. Shame on us". No one ever asked for their money back from Wolfe-Simon.

The moral? Always be skeptical of government funded research. Always be suspicious of 'experts' opinions.

Mentioned this week was Dr. Richard Feynman's (a REAL Nobel Prize winner) address to the Caltech class of 1974. It is a VERY good read, just two pages. I don't think Barry has read it. Here:

Much like the Gay Marriage agenda... people feel 'good' that they accomplished something, even if it would not affect them at all... they joined the MOB and got something done...

203 elisa Wolf-Simon - Wholly funded by NASA, "discovers" arsenic-eating
bacteria. Findings "peer-reviewed" and published in Science magazine.
There follows a huge public roll-out by NASA. Big production,
table of scientists all touting the huge discovery. Lots of commentary
about the significance, blah, blah. She is celebrated as emblematic of
government spending on 'science!'.

The amazing thing to me: the whole claim was totally implausible on its face, on scientific grounds. Replacement of phosphorus with arsenic would cause innumerable problems in a coupled system, such as a physiological one. (E.g., reaction rates of phosphate and arsenate esters differ substantially.) It'd be like having tires of wildly different sizes on a car.

If the report were true, it would be monumental scientifically, but extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and that was not forthcoming. Far from it. I was not at all surprised the report was quickly debunked.

I still can't get over Ph.D. scientists accepting those wild claims uncritically, and unskeptically. It's shameful. I pooh-poohed from the get-go.

I think the problem is that science and engineering tend to select for borderline Asperger types (who all too often are on the wrong side of the border line). Most women are too well-rounded (at ease, morons) and balanced for that.

Someone once asked me where Asperger kids ended up. I replied, "You've obviously never set foot in a STEM department."

Apparently if you are working in the public sector fields as a teacher, work at a university, or at a nonprofit, if you pay your school loans promptly in 10 years the rest will be forgiven. The only fields listed were all public sector jobs. Nothing in the
private sector, or useful for growing the economy, gets the loan
forgiveness. And the loan forgiveness only goes back seven years, so if
you went to school before that you are sunk.

Is this real, did the White House actually sneak in student loan forgiveness when I wasn't looking? I thought that was a pie in the sky dream Obama wanted, bat according to a person I know at a university it is very real.

Let's subsidize the SJW grasshoppers and let the economy growing ants starve. Because that totally makes sense somehow!

________

A good social worker is very important.

A couple years ago, a relative was in the hospital. The family met with the doctor about the patient's prospects at a normal life, and he kept deferring to the social worker. "I can only give you a medical opinion," he kept saying.

Making sure a person's home is safe for the patient, coordinating with health-care agencies, etc., was all the social worker's job.

I don't want to get all worked up, but this topic is one that actually will get me worked up.

I struggled -- and more importantly, my PARENTS struggled -- to pay for college as I went, and I took out loans where I needed to, and promptly paid them off. Spent years sacrificing -- not going out, not living in as nice a place as I could have, driving an old car, etc. etc. to pay off my student loans.

Turns out I was an absolute fool to do that, and so were my parents. I'm sure that $50k or so would be a nice little bonus for them to have in their retirement accounts right about now.

I should have racked up $200k in debt going to a fun party school then just waited for it to get forgiven. Worked for some non-profit or something and the govt would have eaten the balance.

Fucking ridiculous.

Really. They'll send the money to your school of choice, or to you directly. In the first case, the school is supposed to cut you a check for the excess. In the second, you're *supposed* to pay your tuition with the loan.

Because, really, it's not a "student loan" at all, as though you could take a loan out for an education. It's an unsecured personal loan with a low fixed interest on which you do not have to make payments until you are no longer in school.

I think you only have to be a part-time student, too (so, like 6 hours per semester or something like that). But don't quote me on that, because it's been a while since I needed to know.

I had one job cleaning die casting machines. I finished my first shift and the boss came up and said congrats. you've lasted longer that anybody has at THIS job. One of the two dirtiest nastiest jobs I've ever has. Grinder operator would be the other.

Well *I* certainly feel like a chump.

And I feel horrible that my parents contributed any money to my college education when apparently I could have gone to school, loaded up on loans, taken a non profit job for 10 years and had the debt forgiven by the time I was 31 anyways.

something?

.
.Islam and Mosques are the Political Third Rail, they simply aren't mentioned in the same sentences as Christians and Jews in the hopes that no one will notice.

And there is the rub. If they aren't included in the ban all tax breaks rush to judgement for Churches, it all falls apart and they know it. For now it is just smack talk.

415 The great thing in the article, to me, is that Connie(Who's Ass Is As Large As) St. Louis blew off a reporter digging into her fantasy land as not being able to exactly remember a lot of pesky facts because 'she had breast cancer at the time'.......gee, do you think the guy she got booted out had anything to do with her still wasting good oxygen? 417 And I also liked 'academic' Deborah Blum bailing on the whole thing with 'Gee, I don't remember what got said exactly', after being part of the original wadded-panties mob.

That would be Professor Blum, who instructs on science writing and journalism at U of Wisc. in Madison.

Now how could we expect the poor little dear to remember any of the sciencey things that got said? It's not like it's her academic specialty or life's work or anything........

423 You know, the SAWs of the left -- thanks for that acronym, Ace! -- jump on anything that SOUNDS like something they might not like. They then ruin careers and lives, and take plenty of collateral damage along the way, and shrug and keep right on doing it.

We should have a similar policy about disbelieving what they say. When a great man -- a Nobel laureate, say, or someone who just landed a probe on a *comet* -- is slandered for saying something outrageously sexist or racist or able-ist or trans-phobic or whatever, we should start out by assuming it's a lie unless proven otherwise. "He said that? Prove it. Show me the transcript."

On rare occasions, it will NOT be a lie. (The comet-lander actually did wear a shirt. Brendan Eich actually did make a political contribution. Gasp.) We can then ask why, other than to make a small person feel bigger by tearing down the mighty, we are talking about this issue at all.

425 I was outraged before her vita was checked, and his actual comments were established. It is common to encounter brilliant scientists who can be socially awkward at times. Our labs would be devastated if SJW are allowed to police their conversations. A scientist in my family once commented that he was grateful that political wars had not infested the science departments- as compared to the Left's control of Liberal Arts. Apparently, their island of refuge is now targeted for invasion and conquest by the SJW. If they succeed, we should expect the same quality of innovation- or death of it- as exemplified by the Soviet era.
