Overnight Open Thread (27 Jun 2015)

Welcome to the circular firing squad. According to feminists, "trigger warning" is now also a trigger.

Admiral Josh Painter: "This business will get out of control! It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it!"

Animal Farm

Evidently, some people are more special than others. Justice Department to fast track $29 million dollars to help Charleston shooting victims' families. Keep in mind, this money isn't tax dollars. The Fort Hood victims had to fight tooth and nail to just get a purple heart.

On a side note, perhaps those of us who have become victims of the OPM debacle (there is no patch for incompetence)can request lifetime funding from this fund to cover the costs of having to have identity protection services for the rest of our lives.

Hmmmm

This might get interesting. Coalition of African-American pastors vow civil disobedience to gay marriage ruling. I think they'll fold when tax-exempt statuses come up.

Rocket Under The Ice

Religion

If religion does not matter in regard to homosexuality, then why must we restrict our behaviors in deference to Islam? Yeah, yeah, I know we're guests in those countries and I'm being snarky but you know folks are afraid of offending Islamic leaders.

Hollywood

Heh. Actors and directors who deeply regretted their movies.

I think Tom Cruise will probably end up adding Top Gun 2 to his regret list. I can't believe they're going through with that one. For now. I'd rather see Red Storm Rising made into a movie.

BTW, I did see Jurassic World tonight with my son. It was a pretty good summer flick. Not as good as the original but easily better than 2 and 3. Plus, Bryce Dallas Howard is very easy on the eyes.

Red Flag & Distant Thunder in Alaska

Bonus flying video: Finnish F/A-18 doing some low level work.

Asteroid Day

So June 30th is Asteroid Day and their goal is come up with solutions to save us from SMOD. At this point, I'm rooting for SMOD.

Job Interview Tips

There are a few of those I'd love to try. 20 essential job interview tips.

Periodic Table

Saw this over at Instapundit the other day. I'm so going to do this with my kids. Periodic Table Battleship.

Cat Video

Bonus video: The accidental flying cat.

31 "So June 30th is Asteroid Day and their goal is come up with solutions to save us from SMOD. At this point, I'm rooting for SMOD."

Death will not come from the sky, but from the earth. Unlike "climate change", these will be completely man-made.

Funny, there's a lot of Greek writing on the Agent of Destruction heading towards the world's financial system. There's also several huge Omega symbols.

Well, you have to look out for the squids, but you *really* have to look out for the ones who are *embarked* with the squids.

A couple of years back there was a big scandal about USMC enlisted from Camp Pendleton driving up to the San Fernando Valley on leave, to cash in on starring in the gay variant of the Valley's porn industry.

Which generated the proud boast, "A Marine will fuck anything! Getting paid is merely a bonus!"

By the way, the porn biz in the Valley is not doing great since the Los Angeles County pols decided on a mandatory condom ordinance. But, they raised the minimum wage in the county to fifteen bucks! So they got that going for them, which is nice.

I'm willing to bet that they will not only avoid mosques, but also black churches. It's all about punishing people who don't vote D.

Catholics used to be strongly D, but now they are divided (those who actually are in the pews tend to be more conservative than the bishops and the cultural Catholics). The bishops misguided and stupid support of amnesty and Ocare won't save them.

So they'll go after us mackerel snappers. I'm positive they'll also target Southern Baptists. Because Southern. The progs just revel in any humiliation they can mete out to Southerners.

Funny, I remember that when Carter was elected, being Southern was briefly cool. But that's when the South still voted D.

I imagine they're saying something like this:

"Crazy Americans! ISIS kills many infidels every day and Americans obsess about a flag and give sodomites the right to marry! It's hiliarious! When we take over, we will give sodomites the right to choose whether they want to be thrown from the tops of buildings or hung from the lamppost. I think that's what's coming. Really.

But (trying to be optimistic) maybe that's what the Church needs. People who are prosperous and comfortable start to believe they don't need God. That's what's happening in our society now.

I was always puzzled by Christ's saying that it is harder for a rich man to get into heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. I think I finally understand it - it's hard, not impossible. It's hard because rich and powerful people are continually tempted to consider themselves to be gods. The humility needed to believe in God often is not there. And that's what has happened to our country as a whole.

286 I have yet to turn on my AC this summer here in southeastern Wisconsin. Of course, I live right by Lake Michigan - my sister's place, 15 miles west, is always 10 degrees warmer.

Last year, I think I turned the AC on maybe 3 times all summer. Fine by me as I much prefer having all the windows open.

Once in DC in the '80's, there was a stretch of maybe 6 or 8 weeks when the temp never dropped beyond 100, even at night. During the middle of that heat wave, my AC conked out. I tried sleeping in the bathtub one night, I was so f'ing miserable. And I'm someone who handles heat better than cold.

297 At present its 90 degrees with almost no wind, and humid. It doesn't look like it will go below 75 tonight, and about a half mile from here is a downtown "world beat" event where they will have concerts tonight. I don't expect to get much sleep tonight.

I don't do heat well. I can acclimatize to it so its not as bad as at first when its hot and I basically have heat stroke. But I'll take cold over heat any time.

A little story to help make my point. Last week I was at a beach house with 2 aunts and my mom, none of them under 75 years old. For them, the heat had to be on, even though it was comfortable in the house and the sun was out. They were freezing.

The problem is, if you get cold you can bundle up. Put on another sweater ladies. I can only get so naked before people start arresting me.

Well I wouldn't have anyway. For the most part its easy for me to avoid that kind of thing. There's a verse in the Bible that talks about "adorning" the gospel. You can't make it better, but you can make it more attractive to people by how you behave and what you do. I'm not very good at it but I try to remember and lean toward charity, virtue, and peace. I try hard to avoid profanity, sexual references, etc. So that stuff tends to be easy to not upset people with. And I try to avoid politics unless its a more generic "boy do politicians suck" sort.

But
unfortunately, this stuff is no laughing matter. Imagine being someone

imagine there being millions of people in that, or similar, straits.

CHiggers are mites.

The larval form of which latches on to you, injects some slobber in you that liquefies your skin cells, then sucks them up.

That enzyme or whatever it is in the slobber causes itching unlike anything you have ever felt.

I would not wish it in my worst enemy.

429 What's a chigger?

It is a larval stage of a tiny mite that you get when you brush up against the foliage they are hiding in. They are nearly always invisible to the naked eye. They lack vicious mandibles or beaks like a skeeter so they need to push their mouth parts against your skin so they are often in areas of tight clothing or folds of skin.

They inject an enzyme that dissolves a tiny portions of skin which your body isolates by building a crusty straw around the wound. The chigger slurps this up hungrily.

Since it is not a bite like a mosquito or deer fly, but more of a tiny wound it takes a looong time to heal and itches like crazy the whole time.

Fortunes have been made selling patent medicines to those poor souls with a bad case, and all of them are useless.

As I said, I fear them, for sometimes you can get hundreds of bites at a single time.

It's always hot there this time of year.

For decades, the shallow and bitchy gossip doyenne of the _San Francisco Chronicle_, Herb Caen, got by on anecdotes about how blistering the temperatures had been during his youthful heyday up north as "The Sackamenna Kid".

A heyday that coincided with the Warren G. Harding administration. But hey, who's counting? It must have been all of those Model T Fords running round, changing the climate with their emissions. In the seldom heralded SUV version.

Heat seems to be an effective treatment for many kinds of insect bites. Having just watched a video about a portable induction heater for metal, it occurs to me that a spot heater using microwaves might be useful for treating insect bites on humans (or pets). Push the business end against the bite, and push and hold the button until it gets uncomfortably warm, and release.

Actually, it is probably how Hollywood thinks that companies actually hire people. The company has a 100:1 fuckups to compatents ratio, with the 1 always being the lowest ranking member of the staff.

Once upon a time, out in the remote reaches of the intartoobs, there was a piece written by someone who imagined themselves to be an evil villain, and describing how they would comport themselves as such vs. the versions of evil villains in the Hollyweird movies.

I particularly liked the item which said that "If I find myself with the hero/heroine safely under my control, I will not explain my evil plan in the smallest particulars to them before killing them. I'll just kill them straight away."

As such, if I ever find myself helming an evil corporation, I will insist on top-notch operationally competent management from the C-suite all the way down to the person in charge of dinosaur cage muckings-out.

I love movie economics now that the government is printing money at warp speed.

I haven't seen it, but if the park cost billions, that's chump change today - a few days of government spending.

Scarlet Johansen (sp?) was in some movie about an island where they were cloning people for spare parts. The island cost the company $800 MILLION. Meanwhile one of the stimulus bills was $800 BILLION.

Futurama had an episode with a new DOOP (Space United Nations) ship. The cost was a cool $1 Billion.

When I see things like that in the movies now, I think the United States should have built a Death Star or a Stargate for the money that has been pissed away the last few years.

630 I think I have the solution for the churches that are asked to marry gay couples, because we all know that's going to happen. The pastor should make it clear that he's perfectly willing to marry them because it's the law of the land, yada yada yada, but by the way, he personally feels that marriage is between a man and a woman. And the church should post some signs stating the same way. Then, following the example of the jeweler who was willing to make the gay wedding bands, the gay couple will become so offended that they will boycott that church and tell all their gay friends that they should never darken the doors of such a gay-unfriendly church.

Do you think that would work?

And that's the problem - church leaders who object to gay marriage will be too principled to dissemble as say they're willing to do it. My point, though, is that someone should call the bluff of the gay activists. Why would they want to be married in a church that doesn't believe in gay marriage? Wouldn't that ruin their special day?

635 "Early Church martyrs happily went to their deaths before they would offer one pinch of incense to the false gods of Rome."

What I am saying is quite simple:
DO. NOT. GIVE. ONE. INCH.
Intransigence is what's called for here. No backing down, no compromising, and not one single fuck should be given about what the weak, simple-minded little shits on twitter and tumblr think about it.

637 I just came across an editorial at time.com. The title says it all - "Orthodox Christians Must Now Learn to Live as Exiles in Our Own Country."

They were men who lived in a world where life for almost all was a struggle and death was ever present. Gives you a certain fortitude and perspective on things.

We live in a world where people bitch if their cell phone doesn't have a 5 bar signal.

Really think there's going to be a lot of volunteers shouting, "More wood! I burn too slowly!"?

Also: the majority of the American population doesn't even know of the ideal of the early martyrs.

Irreligious and uneducated by our schools, to the extent they can conceive of religious resistance to power, it's MLK fighting Y. T. Man, nuns hammering on Minuteman missiles and lesbian Episcopalians protesting to get married.

644 Ugh - just saw a picture of the rainbow White House again. A close friend is a US National Park Ranger and she wanted to know how in hell Obama got permission from the National Parks to light up the White House. They get requests all the time to light up the monuments for various causes and they are all rejected. Obama doesn't own the White House. It is owned by all of us and managed by the National Park Service. Who gave permission for the rainbow lights?

I have a few replies to that, all of which would get me banned. Suffice it to say: the day will belong to the ones with the stomach for the most horror, and I don't think the pampered and coddled tumblrinas and SJWs have the same stomach as the Parisian mobs, Russian bolsheviks, and Khmer Rouge. (Stalin never got a participation trophy, Hitler never needed a trigger warning, Pol Pot never demanded a "safe space") They talk a good game online, but will back down when confronted with physical force.
We morons may have the body of weak and feeble middle aged alcoholics, but we have the hearts and stomachs of a king.

652 I am a clone, I am not alone
Every fibre of my flesh and bone is identical to the others
Everything I say is in the same tone
As my test tube brother's voice
There is no choice between us,
If you had ever seen us,
You'd rejoice in your uniqueness
And consider every weakness something special of your own
Being a clone, I have no flaws to identify
Even this doggerel that pours from my pen,
Has just been written by another twenty telepathic men,
Oh, word for word, it says:

"Oh, for the wings of any bird, other than a battery hen".

Which is, more or less, classic Foco/Vanguard of the Proletariat revolutionary theory. Doesn't seem to have a demonstrated real world history of success.

A small cadre can swing the nation thru direct replacement of a ruling oligarchy -- the October Revolution, or thru outside intervention -- most revolutions of the 60s and 70s, or simply by being the only organized group in a collapsed society -- hello Middle East.

If the Rebels (tm Lucasfilm and Disney) actually threaten the real political and economic interests of a centralized power that has it's act together, they get bug-stomped.
