Scientific Paradigm-Breaker Roils Academy:
SCIENTISTS DISCOVER THAT OUTPUT OF THE SUN COULD INFLUENCE EARTH'S HEATING AND COOLING

"I believe that non-human factors may be largely responsible for global warming and cooling. This hypothetical non-human factor would have to be very large, though -- on the order of magnitude of our own sun." -- A commenter, ages ago

In a discovery scientists are calling "shocking," it turns out that solar output, that is, how much radiative heat the sun pumps out, is, get this, somewhat variable and changes over the years, and furthermore, changes in solar output may actually have effects in places as distant as -- well, let's say the Earth, for example.

Artist's conception, courtesy of @the_Daily_Bleat

And you're not going to believe this -- it also turns out the sun is currently experiencing a lower-than-normal output of radiative heating, and that this has "offset" the expected global warming, that is, this is a pretty good excuse as to why there has been no damn global warming at all for 17 years.

Now, while the scientists say that this lower-than-usual solar output may cause the current cooling, they do not, for reasons I can't quite guess at, postulate that perhaps higher-than-usual solar output was a major factor in the 1980-1998 warming cycle.

Nope- only this lower-than-average cycle can change things.

Anyway, enough of my yammering. Let's listen to the Science Reporters. They always know exactly what the f*ck they're talking about, eh?

Global warming in northern Europe and the eastern US could be partially offset in future winters because of the sun entering a weaker cycle similar to the one which enabled frost fairs to take place on the river Thames in the 17th and 18th century, according to new research.

That was the so-called Little Ice Age.

...

The sun has been in a period of high activity for the past few decades. But scientists believe there is now as much as a 20% chance of a weaker period of activity, known as a grand solar minimum, occurring in the next 40 years.

If it's been "in a period of high activity for the past few decades," and they're now admitting solar output changes Earth's temperature (and a big A-doyyy on that one, huh?), why are they not even acknowledging the obvious here?

Answer: It's the things that are the most obviously true that have to be denied the most vigorously and emotionally.

The emperor's clothes are beautiful! Don't you agree?

"Even if you do go into Maunder minimum conditions it’s not going to combat global warming, the sun’s not going to save us," said lead author Sarah Ineson at the Met Office. The Maunder minimum is the name for the sun’s weak period during 1645-1715, when the Thames froze solidly enough for eyewitnesses to report horse-driven carriages crossing it.

Climate change means such sights in the second half of the century would not occur, since the sun’s cooling effect would only reduce manmade temperature rises in northern Europe and the eastern US by 0.4-0.8C. Such offsetting was not a "large signal", Ineson said, although the study found there would be more frosty days in those regions than there would be without the weaker solar activity.

When they talk about the Earth's temperature going up 3.2 degrees over a century -- that's a large signal.

This 0.4-0.8 degree change? Pshah. Nothing but a squirrel lookin' for a nut in my world.

The article goes on to discuss how horrible the global warming that isn't happening will ultimately, maybe, be.

Incidentally, this may be bad, as in some pretty serious cooling. (At which point they'll start talking about Global Cooling.)

Solar output is declining at the fastest rate in 9300 years, some estimate.

The past few decades have been characterized by a period of relatively high solar activity. However, the recent prolonged solar minimum and subsequent weak solar cycle 24 have led to suggestions that the grand solar maximum may be at an end. Using past variations of solar activity measured by cosmogenic isotope abundance changes, analogue forecasts for possible future solar output have been calculated. An 8% chance of a return to Maunder Minimum-like conditions within the next 40 years was estimated in 2010 (ref. 2). The decline in solar activity has continued, to the time of writing, and is faster than any other such decline in the 9,300 years covered by the cosmogenic isotope data1. If this recent rate of decline is added to the analysis, the 8% probability estimate is now raised to between 15 and 20%.

You all get out on the roads this weekend, and you all drive like banshees.

Then you come home and you start barbecueing, you barbecue everything, you even barbecue your damn old ratty sneakers you're keeping for God knows what reason (you think if you ever go crabbin', you'll need old sneakers -- but dude, when's the last time you went crabbin'? Just barbecue them already).

It is critically important you add as much precious, life-giving CO2 -- The Invisible Guardian -- to the atmosphere to counteract the effects of the lethal Maunder Minimum.

Your dad loves it. Your mom loves it. Your plants love it.

This country was built on two things: Freedom, and Carbon Dioxide.

111 Okay... so let me get this straight.

The sun is entering a period which will cause less solar radiation to reach the earth, therefore the earth (absent any human factors - argumento) would cool to the extent that one could have "Frost Fairs" ON the River Thames.

However (argumento), because of human factors (aka "Anthropogenic Global Warming), we will instead only experience a slight cooling, back to, say, Industrial Revolution levels.

So... yay human factors! Thank God we didn't listen to your nonsense about curbing our Carbon footprint! Can you imagine how red-faced you'd be now if we had, and you were having to explain why all our crops were going to fail and the growing season was going to drop down to just a few months a year?

That's pretty much my take, too. Leftists consistently believe that they're the center of the universe, that their coordinates are (0,0,0), and that their every decision, thought, or feeling has galactic consequences. Rather like infants in that respect.

Newsflash to leftists: you don't matter. Not a bit. If you drop dead tomorrow, no one except your family and friends will give a shit. The earth will still rotate on its axis, and everything else will be exactly the same, no matter who you are, or what you do or have done. As de Gaulle said, when told that someone was irreplaceable: "Cemetaries are full of irreplaceable men."

257 If you took the btu output of every suv, every coal plant, every heat producing piece of shit on this planet and added those btu's up for the year they would equal 1/8000th of the btu's that the sun inflicts upon us in year. There is science and their is political science. AGW is the latter.

283 Mankind's burning of carbon fuels since the start of the Industrial Revolution is the best possible thing that has ever happened on this planet for plant life and by extension animal life.

Carbon dioxide is essentially airborne plant fertilizer, and a massive global analysis last year proved indeed that the Earth is now "greening" across the entire globe, and that in something like the last 20 years there is now 7% more vegetation on the planet.

Furthermore, a study that just came out recently this year showed that most of that greening is happening on the fringes of existing desert regions -- where it is most "needed" (based on the presumption that "more life" is goof and "less life" is bad).

This "greening" (increased plant growth) has a cascading effect that leads to more ANIMAL growth and GREATER BIODIVERSITY.

So although there is still no proof that burning carbon fuels have affected global temperatures, there IS proof that it has helped global life.

Which is supposed to be EXACTLY what the environmentalists want.

In a sane world, environmentalists would be demanding that MORE carbon be put into the atmosphere!

But of course we don't live in a sane world.

Posted by: just saying at June 25, 2015 05:10 PM (wkuqO)

I've pointed out that there are sound scientific reasons to doubt AGW. First the details of oscillator strengths of the various chromophores, etc. give arise to skepticism, then the history of the earth's climate (ice ages) shows that huge swings can arise without any human intervention whatever, and the origin of those swings remains contentious.

But without knowing anything at all about technical reasons, it was easy to see it was crap because of the hysterical way AGW was pushed, by who was pushing it (the Left, as their umpteenth justification for government control of the economy), and by the proposals to "combat" AGW (again, government control of the economy).

346 At first, the science behind CO2 and greenhouse effect etc made sense, back in the 80s when Margaret Thatcher (of all people) pushed for the research. But that pretty quickly was shown to be too simplistic and by the first IPCC report in 2001 (I think it was?) they had already noted that the sun's impact was great and unknown. By three years later it was pretty clear that the pattern of solar activity and warming periods was easy to trace and that solar forcing was far more significant than they had estimated. But the politics had gotten hold by then and it was off to the races.

419 just saying. #248:

"I knew from day one AGW was a fraud."

Fools and villains like Michael Mann excepted, I don't believe at all that the scientists pushing AGW were lying or perpetuating a fraud. That would actually be less worrisome to me. It's easier to fix.

They fooled themselves. They fooled themselves because they had a theory and they liked it. So they convinced themselves they could rule out natural variability and they built a whole edifice based on "What else could possibly explain this?"

They liked the policy implications of what they were selling. Did that lead to conscious distortion? I'd say not; rather, multiple little suspensions of disbelief, little refusals to call out their colleagues for stretching things, for seeking the headlines. They liked the attention, respect and funding that the world's concern brought their field.

And of course, their theories were called into question largely by non-experts, because most of the experts jumped on the bandwagon. Some skeptics may have been motivated by dislike of the policy implications; others were genuinely asking good questions. But either way, these people were being questioned by people whose credentials they could mostly look down on and whose politics they despised.

(As for Mann and his ilk, they remind me of cops framing a perp they "know" is guilty, dammit. Are we going to let stupid evidentiary rules get in the way of doing the right thing?)

In short, if you were trying to create a system where a bunch of scientists bought into a theory, banished doubts, dismissed contrary observations for as long as possible, and cast as traitors those among their numbers who said "wait a minute here", you couldn't do much better than the AGW debate.

THank you, Buzzsaw, for doing thw follow-up for me -- I didn[t notice the attempted rebuttal.

Ahem (from the link):

"Introduction

The benefits of carbon dioxide supplementation on plant growth and production within the greenhouse environment have been well understood for many years.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential component of photosynthesis (also called carbon assimilation). Photosynthesis is a chemical process that uses light energy to convert CO2 and water into sugars in green plants. These sugars are then used for growth within the plant, through respiration. The difference between the rate of photosynthesis and the rate of respiration is the basis for dry-matter accumulation (growth) in the plant. In greenhouse production the aim of all growers is to increase dry-matter content and economically optimize crop yield. CO2 increases productivity through improved plant growth and vigour. Some ways in which productivity is increased by CO2 include earlier flowering, higher fruit yields, reduced bud abortion in roses, improved stem strength and flower size. Growers should regard CO2 as a nutrient."

508 thinking that because one's ancestors had slaves somehow makes one guilty of something is one of the problems with the lack of critical thinking being taught in school.

that we take a commonplace and approved action done in the past and turn it into a crime now can have no bearing on those who live now.

To do otherwise is just chaos.

Which, imo, is exactly what Obama and his masters are doing.

"Global Warming? No, Satellites Show Carbon Dioxide Is Causing 'Global Greening'

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are bolstering plant life throughout the world, environmental scientists report in a newly published peer-reviewed study. The findings, published in Geophysical Research Letters, are gleaned from satellite measurements of global plant life, and contradict assertions by activists that global warming is causing deserts to expand, along with devastating droughts.

The study noted that foliage in warm, wet regions such as tropical rainforests are near their maximum capacity. In warm, arid regions there is room for greater increases in foliage and rising carbon dioxide levels are inducing more prevalent plant growth.

Carbon dioxide acts as aerial fertilizer and also helps plants thrive under arid conditions. ...
...

The satellite data show plant life in the United States has especially benefited from rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and gradually warming temperatures. Satellite data show foliage has increased in the vast majority of the United States since 1982, with the western U.S. benefiting the most. Indeed, many western regions experienced a greater than 30 percent increase in foliage since 1982.

Other regions showing particularly strong increases in foliage include the Sahel region of Africa, the Horn of Africa, southern Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and nearly all of Europe."

This, all by itself, should be the end of the entire "Climate Change" hysteria.

But, as noted, we don't live in a sane world.

The Earth and its enveloping atmosphere IS basically a gigantic greenhouse.

In fact, that statement it the entire basis of AGW theory and the left's arguments.

Implying that "CO2 helps plants inside a greenhouse, but has no effect on them outside a greenhouse" is absurd.

Plants don't know where they are. They just grow.

Put a plant in an area with more CO2, it will grow more.

That "area" could be a little glass box, or an entire planetary atmosphere. Both are "greenhouses," merely of different size.

579 Higher fruit yields

As witnessed by the sudden explosion of transsexual matters of immediate concern in the media. Hey, if higher CO2 levels were the reason folks like Bruce Jenner wanted to lope off little Bruce I'd plant a tree on his behalf.

Not sure what the manliest tree is. Thinking oak.

581 zombie, if you and mark levin want to call it plant food go ahead. The limiting factor is not carbon, but accessible nitrogen in most ecosystems outside a terrarium.
I never said it was unnecessary but ive never heard of it as a fertilizer until they were looking for a response to the silliness of AGW. Plants have evolved using stomata pores. In times of higher CO2 plants evolve to have fewer, in times of less CO2 more. But whatever.

582 willow,

I was having sleeping troubles not too long ago, and my doc recommended Benadryl (antihistimine). A structured routine before going to bed helped, too, but the benadryl made a big difference, almost immediate.

I used a lot of chamomile tea, too, and tried melatonin, but neither had much impact.

585 Put a plant in an area with more CO2, it will grow more.

And take the CO2 out of the air. That whole Gaia self-regulating thing.

595 I am departing the office, and will run my Z as close to WOT as traffic permits on the way to pickup charcoal on the way home.

Steaks from CO2 producing bovines will be ready by sundown, satisfying me and mine and stimulating the market for more tasty, wasteful animal meat, which I will also grill. It's the circle of life, really.

597 Huh? Supposedly 97% of scientists said the data showed incontrovertible evidence of warming, but now they are trying to explain why even though it should have, it didn't. And every investigative genius in the media thinks this is perfectly logical.

CEO: "Hey, great news. I found out why we haven't made a profit in 10 years - Bernie in Accounting was embezzling millions!"

Board Chairman: "But you have been reporting we made record profits year after year!"

CEO: "Look!! A squirrel!"

600 The people who are now called "climate scientists" are what we used to call meteorologists. They can't even accurately predict the weather outside of a few days never mind a decade. FIRE THEM ALL. They are all scum sucking pieces of trash who shouldn't be listened to. Go back to pretending to be able to forecast the weather on the news idiots.
