That's how I learned a lot of my vocabulary -- I'd be reading a book, run across a word I didn't know, and either figure it out from context or look it up.

I suspect it has to do with short term memory vs. long term memory and that some people (such as me) are easily distracted in social situations. Feh's trick is an attempt to overcome that by keeping focus on the person you're meeting long enough to push their name into long-term memory, but of course some of us don't fall for such tricks.

I am literally reading the exact same series as Flynn, History of Civilization and am stuck in the exact same book, the Renaissance.
Durant is good but he goes on and on and on about art a bit too much for my taste. In this book, he really goes after it obviously.
Ace is dead on right. Ideas matter. I remember reading the first book in this series. Ancient Greece. There was an ancient Greek city state that had a custom. A guy who wanted to introduce a law had to stand on a chair with a noose around his neck.
If the law passed, they removed the noose. If the law failed, they removed the chair.
I couldn't remember the name of the city state so I googled it and guess what. None other than Ronald fucking Reagan used that in a joke, of course, espousing the virtue of limited government.
IDEA MEN MATTER. We need more Reagans, not RINOs. So reading what Flynn was reading blew me away. Nice.

What I found interesting about what little Durant I read (I read parts of 7 and 8 for Three Musketeers research) is that they seem to take the side of whoever they happen to be writing about. They'll go from one person to another who each think the other is evil, and both sides are presented as the good guy in the story.

I think it has to do with the stress of social situations.
I suspect it has to do with short term memory vs. long term memory
and that some people (such as me) are easily distracted in social
situations. Feh's trick is an attempt to overcome that by keeping focus
on the person you're meeting long enough to push their name into
long-term memory, but of course some of us don't fall for such tricks.

I just had a heapin' helpin' of that myself.
It's been hot here lately, and two weekends ago I skipped mowing the lawn because I convinced myself, "hey, it doesn't look that bad." Well, by the following Tuesday it did look that bad.
And then last weekend I just got lazy and skipped it again. I couldn't bring myself to go outside in the heat.
Tonight I got home from work, turned on the computer, and looked at the weather forecast for this weekend. Nothing but rain, rain, and more rain. I hate mowing the lawn in the evening after working all day, but it looked like it was now or never. I steeled myself to change clothes and go out and do it.
At that moment the guys who cut my neighbor's lawn showed up. I practically jumped out the window and ran over there, asking them if they could also cut mine, like right frickin' now.
They quoted me $30, did it, and I gave them $35. I'm doing the Happy Dance right now.
Another nice part is that they are two Americans. I asked for their card and will definitely consider them in the future.

This is why the end game of Islam has to be world domination. It's not an interest on the part of Muslims to "save" the world, in the way that Christians approach prosylitization. I cannot see any difference between this concept and the Left's approach to what they view as societal ills, some of which (racism) we would actually agree upon in principle. But while the conservative would address racism as an attitude of the individual and attempt to reason with them to change that attitude, the Left can only fixate on the actual physical destruction of any cultural monuments to which they can make any degree of strained connection to a given issue, and what they call "education." It would be bizzare if there weren't so many, many examples of that exact behavior in history; the totalitarian removal of any cultural artifact tied to the idea being opposed (Attaturk, for example, changed the entire male dress code), coupled with the strict enforcement of recitation of the new dogma.
The Left doesn't choose not to reason with those who hold opposing views to theirs merely because they don't stand a chance in that arena. It has to do with their fundamentally bankrupt view of the individual, the value of the individual, the capability of the individual.

No, the Bonnie Blue actually predates by many years and is associated originally with West Florida vs the Spanish. The FC is the one that is actually the "Stars and Bars," and resembles a "Betsy Ross" flag, but with two wide red stripes and one wide white stripe.

When I was a kid, we used to drive down to a very rural part of Virginia to visit my grandparents every summer. There were a couple of gas stations along the way that still had "whites only" signs over the drinking fountains. My parents would never stop at those stations, but my dad would slow the car down and point to the signs and explain that this was how it used to be. My siblings and I all attended Virginia public schools which had large populations of black students and we all had black friends, so we were quite taken aback by the idea of blacks being treated differently than whites.
BTW, for those thinking that I must be around 100, I'm not even half that yet.

On this site occurred the Colfax Riot in which three white men and 150 negroes were slain. This event on April 13, 1873 marked the end of carpetbag misrule in the South.
It was put up in 1950. That would have been under Democrat James Davis. Those 153 people were almost certainly all Republicans. It's a sign commemorating the murder of Republicans in order to perpetuate real racism.

I know the LaughingStock Media is doing this kind of pathetic propaganda and ambush interviews all the time, I just choose not to be exposed to it much as a rule. Usually they're just annoying, doing what one expects. Seen one, you've seen 'em all.
But their usual level of stupid, combined with the incredible gormlessness of this New Civil War they're fomenting (doing just what the Charleston killer wanted) made these especially hard to watch.
The non-newsfolk, Cruz, the student, the righteously indignant store owner who "refused to identify himself" are fine to see.
But it's hard to suffer through the idiot spew in these clips for those gems. I had to keep hitting pause on the bobbleheads because, as I watched them, I kept getting interrupted by streams of f-words and other hate speech erupting from my mouth. They've reduced me to that.

I was a bit disappointed to see that you have recently deleted the Confederate Battle Flag and the Stars and Bars from your offerings. I've been thinking about buying one or both of them.
I've been a customer in the past and have always recommended your company to others. I think it's generally a bad idea to give in to radical pressure groups, especially when they are trying to rewrite history. Now they are emboldened and are talking about removing statues of Confederate generals from war memorials, and changing the names of monuments.
I've been a Northerner all my life, by the way. I've never displayed a Confederate flag before, but now I want to.

Yes, General Lee's house sits high up on a hill. It's one of the most easily identifiable local landmarks. You can see it from many parts of Arlington and Alexandria. My mom, who had a terrible sense of direction, used to use the house to navigate her way home. One of my brothers is buried in Arlington Cemetery now.

The reason I really love gone with the wind is because it truly takes the story through every part of the civil war experience for the south from the early moments when people were happy about the war, to awfulness of waiting to hear lists of everyone who has died, to the scene that scared me as a kid of a field full of wounded and dying soldiers, civil war medicine horrors, and then the grimm aftermath trying to pay taxes and survive. They really manage to fit a lot in.

I should send something similar to our local flag maker, which is named, yes, the Dixie Flag company. Two days ago they took every CBF off sale.
Too bad. It's a cool place to shop, and my son used to love going there when he was collecting the little national flags. I remember it being mobbed after 9-11 when people couldn't buy enough US flags. I'm kind of disappointed in them.

My parents are buried in a ~200 year old cemetery in rural Maryland. Many of the graves have small US flags denoting military veterans, and a few have small Confederate flags.
They rest side by side. I think that's a good thing.
