Peak Leftism? I think there are vast areas of Leftism yet to be explored. Gulags, summary executions and gas chambers just over that hill. The one we were supposed to die on was a few hills back.

Not a slam on Mike Flynn--it is the same as pretty much all the candidate sites, but boy would I appreciate a candidate who promises, no spam, no solicitations, no selling donor contact info. I would also like to be able to use Paypal rather than a credit card.

Civil War Veterans: 1913

16 So, I put this in the THC thread, but it was near the end, so I'm moving it here.

****

So, it is unofficially (it hasn't been announced yet) official (we're pretty sure it has been decided): the BSA National Council is going to mandate that BSA Packs/Troops/Ventures allow openly homosexual leadership. That decision is expected to be handed down (no vote this time, people might decide that's a bridge too far) and effective sometime in the next 30 - 90 days. If we're lucky we'll get a year.

I cannot put into words how sick this makes me, or even all the reasons.

Worse, I'm going to have to explain to my 8 yr old why he can't be a Cub Scout anymore- and he loves scouting. Dammit.

Meanwhile, in Christie-topia:

A state appellate court has ruled that a southern New Jersey man cannot buy guns because his wife is a convicted felon.

In their ruling issued this week, the two-judge panel found that the guns presence in the mans home would give his wife greater access to firearms, creating an unacceptable threat to public health, safety and welfare. They said the mans Constitutional right to own weapons was "subject to reasonable limitations."

The ruling noted that the mans wife has two felony convictions for drug offenses and also was convicted of drunken driving. It also said police were called to the familys home in December 2011, when the man claimed his wife had hit him while she was drinking.

VDH is correct again-

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/420142/america-one-nation-indivisible

The idea that even saying 'America is a melting pot" is now verboten by the leftards-

points to the complete balkanization of the US.

The idea that the American Dream is something foreign to-

as an example, Black people.

That somehow the common Middle Class American idea of -

bettering yourself, getting a good education or marketable skill, obeying the law, raising a family and providing for your children to do better than you did-

is somehow antithetical to being Black is complete insanity.

but, that seems to be the standard now.

That instead of the common interests of good schools, safe streets, clean gov't, maximum freedom, and equality as fellow Americans and fellow citizens in the same damn city-

are far less relevant than the simple identifier of skin color can lead no where good and never has throughout the entire course of human history.

Anywhere you go in the world, the Middle Class has to do those very things, to be Middle Class.

The new idiocy from the Progtards is to break everyone into smaller and smaller competing groups- Blacks, Latinos, Wymyns, Asians- none of whom have any power without gov't patronage.

That people are selling their future, that of their children, grandchildren for the cookie crumb of an indirect, impersonal pat on the head from some celebrity of the moment is just plain nuts.

but hey, here we are.

76 Re: Peak leftism.

This is my own weak minded opinion, but we on the conservative right believe we are reaching a point where some sort of second revolution might be necessary to restore the republic - a voter rebellion, or something other.

What I think we fail to realize though, is that the left also is longing for a revolution, a revolution that take us into full government (socialist) control. Leftists don't look at the massive debt and fiscal obligations and see anything ominous. They look at it and see that everything is working just fine so why not just keep writing checks.

I also believe that one of these two sides will likely win. I believe that one of these two sides is winning right now.

Obama, arguably, is the worst president in this country's history, yet he still garners roughly 50% approval.

How hard really, will it be for conservatism to move in to the winning column? Against leftists and the Republican establishment that is just as content to be in the ruling class in a way left of center socialist environment?

The fact that you're right doesn't make the idea any less terrifying.

If we played by the same rules the left employed... A lot of people would be destroyed. Metaphorically and otherwise.

It is precisely the fact that we don't actively seek that destruction that the left uses to win.

That will not last forever.

Just as everyone eventually quits smoking, this incremental tyranny will end.

The question is how much it will hurt.

86 I agree there is going to be a rush to do a bunch of Leftist stuff from people who thought Obama would just walk in and make all of their Liberal wet dreams come true. He has been officially a Lame Duck since Hillary announced and people are pi$$ed.

Libs had very high hopes of him being able to do everything they wanted because they truly believed that no one would oppose him because he is half black. Now he is on the way out and they are frustrated and scared. I mean come on, all they have is Hillary and she don't give a crap about anything but herself and gobs of money and they all know that. That's why all you get is blank stares when Libs are asked about her accomplishments.

He announced in a video address some weeks ago that the policy against having openly gay leadership "would have to change." There was hope that we could delay it, but it looks like 30 - 90 days is most likely, with a much slimmer possibility it's 6 months to a year out.

Here's why: Ten years ago, every single one of those comments would be brushed off as crazy and baseless.

Today, we've got the IRS literally targeting people based on their political affiliation and voting patterns. We've got non-law-enforcement agencies purchasing ammunition by the billions. We've got selective enforcement of our laws, and we've got an Administration which is literally answerable to no one and nothing. Additionally, we have an entire stable of candidates on both sides who see nothing really wrong with any of this.

That's why.

Banning things is stupid, because things that are 'forbidden' are always going to have a certain allure to people. Ignoring things or just declaring them stupid and outdated is much more effective. There is a better life out there for you, but only you can take the first step.

My son (12 at the time) came to me when the BSA caved to the homosexual lobby the first time. Said he didn't want to be a scout anymore because he didn't agree with their decision. I was sad, glad, and proud all at the same time. Proud of the decision he arrived at on his own, glad I didn't have to yank him out of scouts, and profoundly sad at the loss of this once great institution. BSA misunderstood and misread their constituency and chose to play politics instead of defending and promoting heir traditions. As a result, they have greatly accelerated their death spiral.

The AC on the old Honda I use for commuting has grown weaker, so I took it to be recharged. Naturally, they said I would have to replace the compressor... because that's like a $2000 repair... and it may be legit because bad AC compressors are a notorious Honda problem. But to save $2000, I figure I can just open the windows.

Thing is, before I took it in, the AC worked a little in that it would blow cold air but only after it got above about 40 MPH. Now, it doesn't work at all and only blows hot air. Hmmm....

IIRC, he was off raising funds and pressin' the flesh when that vote came up.

This time, McConnell almost certainly gave him the green light to vote "no" for Good Optics, knowing full well that Teddy Boy is a True Republican who loves him some foreign workers and Big Government.

Some time this summer at least two of us will go to Gettysburg. It would be fun if it were more. It would be awesome if some come who know more about Gettysburg and the War of Southern Hospitality than I.

I imagine it will be a Saturday. I will have taken a Friday off and camped nearby. If others also wish to camp that would be a delight, but it is not a requirement.

The other thing we did was a horseback tour of the park (couple hours) - it's just a different way to see it since you're off the road and exploring the fields, such as the place of Picket's charge - gives you an idea of the soldier's perspective. This was also led by a certified historian associated w/the park - so excellent info and story-telling whilst exploring the land.

328 There's plenty of blame to throw around at both sides.

Posted by: Citizen X

Exactly. It was neither a wholly a holy crusade against slavery nor solely a fight to save hearth and home. Like most things in the real world, the issues at heart were complicated and messy, and there were a lot of bad actors on both sides, including unrepentant racists of ranks high and low.

Bluntly, the North fought to save the Union until Lincoln elevated the cause to something more noble (and something ultimately more meaningful). The South fought for the right to not be told how to run their States by the central government, which was unfortunately a major issue to them due to the national division over slavery. Neither side was pure.

Many of the men who fought and suffered, on both sides, fought for what they believed in: in the North: putting down a rebellion attempting to overthrow the central government; the South: defending their home States and homes against an invasion of a foreign power. There was certainly a share of ardent abolitionists from the North and racist slaveholders from the South. But, quite frankly, many whites North and South were very, very racist in those days. For example, the minstrel acts were incredibly popular in the North.

The war ended literal slavery, which was a good outcome. But the homage paid to the CSA and the Confederate flag by many Southerners is not meant to celebrate slavery or racist beliefs, just as the homage paid by Northerners to the 1860s Old Glory and Lincoln glosses over the less than noble ideals and actions of the Union in the war (and there were many). Both sides are guilty, and both sides fought for noble ideals.

"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs - partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."

So the Wildnerness link (Courage of Charleston), just in the first few sentences, has embedded in it several major fallacies. And this is a piece critical of the usual (deserving) suspects. Yet, as we see around us daily, people with a brain opposed to the idiocy engulfing us, themselves, are so often steeped in the nonsensical premises of the people/nonsense they are rightly attacking/lampooning/dismantling.

Whatever. We're not talking about "peak leftism" (isn't Williamson sort of sheepish about employing that concept, given the long ludicrous history of "peak oil," and the key fallacy embedded in that nonsense?). We're talking about default level lack of critical thinking habits, ignorance, and shallow bigotry replacing thought.

Besides which, "peak" implies a downward slope on the other side (i.e. decline in something). Nope. Not a chance we're gonna see that.

In 2008,
Clinton touts her experience with guns

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/04/12/clinton-touts-her-experience-with-guns/

VALPARAISO, Indiana (CNN) - Hillary Clinton appealed to Second Amendment supporters on Saturday by hinting that she has some experience of her own pulling triggers.

"I disagree with Sen. Obama's assertion that people in our country cling to guns and have certain attitudes about trade and immigration simply out of frustration," she began, referring to the Obama comments on small-town Americans that set off a political tumult on Friday.

She then introduced a fond memory from her youth.

"You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl," she said.

"You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It's part of culture. It's part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it's an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter."

Minutes later, in a slightly awkward moment, Clinton faced a question from a woman in the audience whose son had been paralyzed by a gunshot. The woman asked Clinton what she would do about gun control as president.

Clinton touted her husband's record on gun control during his administration, and said "there is not a contradiction between protecting Second Amendment rights" and the effort to reduce crime.

Noting that many hunters and gun collectors want to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, Clinton referred to her positive childhood experiences with firearms.

"As I told you, my dad taught me how to shoot behind our cottage," she said. "I have gone hunting. I am not a hunter. But I have gone hunting."

Clinton said she has hunted ducks.

From time to time when some visting Yankee was overheard making a disparaging comment about the south, she would say something outrageous just to set them off. Typically, "Yep..., I really miss the old days, when I could sit on the front porch enjoying a mint Julip, watching the neighbors string up a darkie".

By the horror in their eyes, you could tell that they actually believed it.

But sex slaves are imprisoned around the world, probably in your home town. And the 13th amendment legally permits convicted prisoners to be enslaved and forced to work without compensation or refusal.

444 "Arrest Benjamin Netanyahu and any other "suspected" Israeli war criminals wherever and whenever you can get your hands on them. That is the shocking bottom line of a scandalous report released today from the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The report emanates from a board of inquiry the Council created in the midst of the 2014 Gaza war. In legalese, the call to arrest Israelis either for trial before the International Criminal Court (ICC), or before any court in any country that the U.N. labels "fair," reads like this:

The board "calls upon the international community . . . to support actively the work of the International Criminal Court in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory; to exercise universal jurisdiction to try international crimes in national courts; and to comply with extradition requests pertaining to suspects of such crimes to countries where they would face a fair trial."

Bastards were trying to defend themselves.

Yeah, people from the south say northerners need to do everything differently and feel free to tell them about it. People from the east coast feel free to tell midwesterners how they're doing it all wrong. People from the midwest tell folks from the west coast how they're doing it all wrong, on and on. Its a certain kind of person, not a region. Most people in those areas don't care, don't want to know, and just want to be left alone.

All joking aside, it really is shocking how ignorant eastern folks are of the western US. Its jaw dropping.

525 "Another fun fact, the war only ended slavery in the Confederate States. There were several northern States which maintained slavery, in some cases even after the 13th amendment was passed and ratified. "

----------------------------------------

Let's not start this idiocy again. Lincoln, who Southerners will tell you was running all over the Constitution, only freed slaves that were liberated after the Emancipation Proclamation because they were considered part of the Southern war effort. In other words, he knew he couldn't free them in other areas because....the Constitution. Which highlights the falseness of the claims by Southerners that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery with the stroke of the pen.

No one legally maintained slaves after the 13th Amendment. And complaining that the institution was only abolished after a Constitutional amendment, seems.....off.

I live in the Midwest and most people don't care one whit what the South thinks. Before the Civil War, most didn't care about slavery beyond not letting it expand. They were tired of the South constantly whining about how they needed more slave territory.

And sometimes even legals. We had a case here a few years ago where some migrant peach pickers from Mexico had come in and were picking peaches. A young girl escaped from their camp and ran into town to the police. They had brought her up from Mexico against her will and were keeping her locked up in one of the farm shacks for "use" by the workers.

The police raided them an actually charged them with slavery, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a minor. The main perps went up the river for a long time.

565 When you think about it, the legacy of slavery is 13% of the population living in a state of perpetual grievance and spite toward the country in which they live. It's like a sore that has festered to become an open gaping wound; an infection that has spread to our blood and is killing us.

Personally, I think resettlement would have been the best move. Lincoln wanted it but one attempt was a miserable failure and the black abolitionists were against it.

Southerners are still upset the lost the war and blacks are still upset over slavery and it's milder cousin Jim Crow.

Yeah but the position of the Pope is mostly political. By that I mean his job isn't so much to run the church theologically and keep it on track in terms of faith and doctrine, but to control it and keep it together, influential, and significant in an increasingly secular world.

So this is a way of getting people to think the Roman Catholic Church is with it and now and cool and not all in the past and stuff. Pathetic, but not unusual.

On this, he gamed "us." He was a leading advocate for this particular legislation. He knew the in, outs, and procedure as well as anyone in the Senate. To flip-flop post-House vote and say, "Well, I learned some new stuff in the last two weeks" is hogwash. Conservatives had been apoplectic about the whole package and the secrecy of the two part vote scheme that there is no possible way Cruz was not aware of the legislation's failings.

The Chinese and Irish building the transcontinental railroad were treated worse than black slaves. The idea was that slaves were long-term investments whose well-being was important to their owners, whereas the hourly workers on the train tracks were expendable. You know, a slave who died doing dangerous construction would cost $1000 to replace but you could always find another Irishman for 25 cents.

Definitely not PC saying that someone maybe, possibly had it worse than African slaves, whether true or not.

Complete inversion of the clear unambiguous history, of course. Abolitionism having been driven, esp. in the US case, by moral and religious forces, i.e., devout Christian abolitionists. 634 I think if anything, the left has proved that totalitarianism can safely thrive in an information age, as long as you condition people to be stupid at an early enough age, and then pander to their narcissism and greed.

This bears repeating. The left has figured out how to perpetually enslave a free people, and do it in a way so that these people enslave themselves willingly.

643 507 Slavery has been described as America's "Original Sin."

When you think about it, the legacy of slavery is 13% of the population living in a state of perpetual grievance and spite toward the country in which they live. It's like a sore that has festered to become an open gaping wound; an infection that has spread to our blood and is killing us.

650 reason #5,378 why the Frankfurt School should've been burnt to the ground the day after it opened. And everyone who was a part of it arrested and/or deported.

Its a fact that there are a certain fairly small group of people whom, if they were eliminated from history, would have saved the world from oceans of blood and tragedy. And they're almost never the ones in front. In fact, in the United States, there's a list of probably 50 people who, if suddenly were abducted by aliens or fell into a deep hole, would change the entire country's trajectory and future dramatically. You likely know most of the names off the top of your head.

As a Christian and a conservative, I know that this is the price of freedom; that we have to put up with scum and monsters in our presence. Senator McCarthy did not have the right idea on how to deal with them; that was unAmerican and reprehensible. But I do understand the temptation and anger.

Cost of a skilled slave (e.g. a blacksmith) in 1850 = $ 2,000 ($56,700 in 2009 dollars)

Above is from the TX Historical society. The idea Southerners mistreated their slaves that Ace is probably gets his information from is that propaganda picture the abolitionists put out showing the slave with his back all scared up from whipping. (you always see that one on sites discussing slavery)

A couple of things to remember about these times. The average farm had zero slaves. Rich farms normally only had two or three. The Tara plantation with hundreds of slaves was very very rare. And the idea that a slave owner would beat someone like that (which would have put in in the bed for a week) that he paid $2,000 for is not logical.

I don't know about that. Black America is really quite separate from white America and so most black people will have the accents of those around them. And the more educated African Americans speak very well, just not with a white accent. I think as long as someone speaks clearly with proper grammar, that's fine. Which is why it's not right when Yankees mock Southern accents. (Fun teasing is cool, but there's often a real disdain behind it.)

The ebonics types speak that way because they're uneducated, similar to how poor white people in some very rural areas are almost unintelligible.

I would doubt Roman slaves had it better than those in the U.S.

This type of narrative comes from the "Mandingo" theory of slave holders, which mostly comes as the typical reaction of people to make things worse than they were.

The meme of a plantation owner telling his overseer to "Go get me a young Buck, I feel like giv'en a good whoop'in" makes just about as much sense as a business owner telling someone to "bring one of my Ferraris out here and a sledgehammer, I feel like getting some exercise".

Slaves were an expensive investment.

As always, it's a political balance: How much whoring is enough? Being an original and also recent backer of Cruz, it pains me to see him falter epically here. I no longer see a wholly principled candidate. I see just another opportunist.

Overreacting? I don't think so. There's a logical evolution of his vote that is readily explained by political opportunism. And with the sliver-close vote and the absence of Lee's participation, I see this as one giant FU to the conservative cause, each participant contributing just enough to the Borg to empower it but waving at the voters to say, "Hey, I tried to stop it but I. Just. Wasn't. Able."

701 I don't know about that. Black America is really quite separate from white America and so most black people will have the accents of those around them.

That's the point. Go to London and in the various parts of the town, everyone speaks the same. Cockney, downtown, highly educated cambridge types, all the same no matter what their ethnic background. It freaks out Americans to see some Olympic Athlete from England with dark skin speak with an English accent, because we're so used to blacks having their own special accent that's very similar to sharecropper idiot whites in the 1800s and early 1900s.

They're distinct. Why? Why even have a separate accent? Yes, almost all blacks can speak like everyone else around them. They do it for interviews, when cops are talking to them, etc. Its their "take me seriously, sir" accent when they know it matters, then among friends the "authentic black" nonsense returns. Cause they gotta "keep it real."

Its a deliberate, pointless way of separating an entire people that almost ensures being treated differently.

702 It is about people tricked into believing they have to be enslaved by
a legacy of slavery, while the rest of us black people who come from
other parts of the world come here and see only opportunity and tend to
prosper. And most of us are darker-skinned than your average African
American.

Note that before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the mass migration of blacks to the Democratic party that American blacks saw the same opportunity and took advantage of it. Amos n' Andy was a comedy - but it highlighted the existence of the black middle class in the 1950's. Harlem - at one time - was a prosperous black neighborhood before zoning in NY reduced it to being a ghetto. Part of the nefarious nature of zoning was that it made new black businesses impossible.

________

"Why?" you ask. Because people do this. It's natural.

I do it, too. At home, I speak normally for me which is a flavor of Inland North that sounds particularly hick. Growing up, practically everyone around me spoke that way, so that's how I learned to speak. At work and in most public settings, however, I make a conscious effort to speak with as little of my accent as possible - especially now that I live and work where another prevalent dialect is spoken.

African Americans speak African American Vernacular English. It's more distinct from standard American English than my linguistic affectations but it's how they speak. To the extent that they speak AAVE in a deliberate effort to be different from people of other races, I don't know and can't say.
