20 So Tenthette has a job interview this morning at 10 (CDT). Honestly we're not sure she even wants the job, but I don't want her to pass it up, either- we need the income.

But it would be full time call-center work, which would be considerably less than ideal.

'Those who ignite a fire should be responsible for the cost of suppressing it before it becomes a conflagration,' wrote Senior District Judge Richard P. Matsch about the Brady Campaign when he awarded $203,000 on June 17 to the retailers the organization sued. He was critical of the group for using the court to publicize its political agenda at the expense of a handful of retailers.
----

After reviewing requested compensation, Matsch determined that Brian Platt of BTP Arms will be awarded $31,969.89, the Sportsman's Guide awarded $59,060.87, and Lucky Gunner awarded $111,971.10.

Austrian of Bosnian descent huh? I'm sure there is no religious reasoning and that can be stated immediately, before any nosy people have a chance to look into his background.

I am baffled that people think they are doing anything other than signaling that there was definitely a religious or political reasoning by ruling it out immediately.

Here, lemme describe it for you. All bright colors in the sky, slopped on the canvas haphazardly, with a completely unnatural mix of pink, green, salmon, yellow and blue, looking nothing like what a sky looks like. Reflected onto a lake, the colors are subdued, and stylistically applied in more of a typical impressionist manner. Almost Monet-like.

It's as if two different people painted it. And there's a smudge on the left side, as if the painter just sorta said "eh, I'll leave that there. No one will care, since this thing is a mess anyway."

--------------
Bonaparte came to power when he helped out the Revolutionary government out by turning his cannons on the Paris mob which had outlived its political usefulness. *meaningful stare at Baltimore, et al* A few years later he responded to criticism of his Middle Eastern adventure by taking over the government and making himself Heroic Leader of Everything, and then Emperor a few years later. There was little opposition in France to either event, since any leader who could have opposed Bonaparte's decision was already dead, in prison, or in exile. Vive le empereur!! Vive le revelucion!!

Anyway, on the wall of the church, right behind the altar and the crucifix, there is an awful, awful, AWFUL tye-dyed pattern. I think it's supposed to represent Easter morning, I really don't know, it's SO bad. The colors they chose were pastel blue, pastel pink, and pastel purple. In a tye dyed pattern swirly. It's the color palette of a 6 year old...just so bad.

Just think exdem13 if we were on the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross timeline where would we be?

Rebuilding Earth sure. But we would still have Minmay. And VF-4s.

Yes I know, by this time the fourth interstellar colonization fleet would be getting set to roll...

BTW have you seen Mikimoto's reboot manga? Still Macross, but cell phones have made an appearance instead of robophones that seek out recipients. Had to do that for the younger generation y'know. (The Petite-cola robo-vendors and litter-getter 'bots are still around though.)

Or they didn't fix the dyes right and the bright blue, pink, and purple washed out. (Sorry, I spent half the weekend sorting my hand-dyed fabric, so it's on my mind...)

113 This reminds me of one of the churches my sister

half-circular kinds, instead of the traditional two rows of pews with an
aisle down the middle kinds.

Anyway, on the wall of the church,
right behind the altar and the crucifix, there is an awful, awful,
AWFUL tye-dyed pattern. I think it's supposed to represent Easter
morning, I really don't know, it's SO bad. The colors they chose were
pastel blue, pastel pink, and pastel purple. In a tye dyed pattern
swirly. It's the color palette of a 6 year old...just so bad.

Under Obamaparte were into our seventh year of Waterloo.
----------
Obummer is more like Napoleon's stupid brother Joseph, who received Spain as a present, ran it into the ground, was swarmed by guerillas, and gave 0% support to the various marshals who were losing campaigns to Wellington each year.

Wellington BTW won Waterloo the same way he beat all of the French armies in Spain. He took a good defensive position, anchored his flanks, waited until the French were tired of throwing themselves at his lines and/or overextended, then hit one wing hard and rolled 'em up. At Waterloo Blucher's army was his counterattack. His entire plan was to hunker down on that ridge until the Prussians showed up.

If Napoleon's ulcer hadn't been driving him to distraction and the army of 1815 had been the army of 1808 instead, Waterloo would have been very different. The preliminary actions had gone his way, with Wellington Blucher separated and pushed back with loss. But Napoleon couldn't personally survey the battlefield because of his ulcer, and his marshals defaulted to being French and simply went headlong at the nearest English positions. The Redcoats held so the Belgians and Dutch didn't run away, and Soult managed to lose contact with Blucher, who ignored his chief of staff's kvetching and marched to the sound of the guns. And the French army of 1815 simply was no longer the instrument that had been used to win and keep an empire. It came up short when the extra push was called for.

Inside Out is not Herman's Head.

And, being a follower of movie reviewers whose opinions I trust wholeheartedly, and as someone who has seen the movie...I don't think the creativity that people are praising is because of the plot of a bunch of inside voices in a person's head.

The creativity is in the execution of it. In taking a relatively mundane thing, and making it a universe where memories are stored and how those memories either disappear or come back.

It's actually a very sweet movie. I liked it a lot...didn't LOVE it the way a lot of people do. But, it is very layered and deserves a lot of praise for creating an animated film that doesn't rely on fart jokes to entertain the kiddies.

194 I don't understand where all the bad feelings for Russia come from.

They are now a capitalist society. There's no evil communist government planning the invasion of the U.S. The Russian people love the people and culture of the U.S. All they want to do is make money and live a good life.

When the Ukraine had free and fair elections, the majority of the people voted for the pro-Russian government. The U.S. promised to support that government against any aggressors. When revolutionaries overthrew the government, the U.S. cheered them on.

Putin appeals to the strong nationalist streak that runs through all Russians. He has to make deals that help his country while appearing to be just as strong as the country was while the USSR was in business. It's a matter of national pride.

Why is it that half the people here are ready to send in the nukes?

What exatly is that all about?

It doesn't transmit everything, it waits for you (or some smartass nearby) to say "Ok, Google", at which point it starts transmitting so it can do its thing. If you have an Android phone, they all do that.

It's occasionally a popular prank at tech conferences for the speaker to say "Ok, Google, go to ace dot mu dot nu" or something similar and wait for peoples' Android phones to freak out.

@162

Inside Out is not Herman's Head.

And, being a
follower of movie reviewers whose opinions I trust wholeheartedly, and
as someone who has seen the movie...I don't think the creativity that
people are praising is because of the plot of a bunch of inside voices
in a person's head.

The creativity is in the execution of it. In
taking a relatively mundane thing, and making it a universe where
memories are stored and how those memories either disappear or come
back.

It's actually a very sweet movie. I liked it a
lot...didn't LOVE it the way a lot of people do. But, it is very layered
and deserves a lot of praise for creating an animated film that doesn't
rely on fart jokes to entertain the kiddies.

225 OK,

FUCKFACE.

Let me walk you through "the issues."

1. Your version of the events in Ukraine are rather "unique" and very, very slanted towards the Russian narrative. In any event, Putin's actions during and subsequent to the revolution are an old-fashioned land grab. Nothing more, nothing less.

2. While we're at it, let's ask the Baltic Republics, Poland, and Georgia how they feel about the docile, misunderstood, capitalist Russia.

3. What I know is that 1,000 years of geopolitical history has something to say about national identities and motivations. Read it, learn it, apply it. They Russian have had that millenia to decide whether or not to be part of the West. That decision has been made.

Imagine this: you're gushing blood. Nothing seems to make it stop. Then you apply a gel to your wound, and within seconds, the bleeding stops. In minutes, you're healed.

This is the premise of VetiGel, an algae-based polymer created by Joe Landolina -- a 22 year-old who invented the product when he was just 17.

Landolina is now the co-founder and CEO of Suneris, a biotech company that manufactures the gel. Last week, Suneris announced that it will begin shipping VetiGel to veterinarians later this summer. Humans won't be far behind.

Lincolntf, I share some of your angst about the drawdown of American power since the late 90s, but Europe is the place I am least worried about.

I had once naively harbored hopes that Europe would start ordering from the adult menu again, one of the reasons I thought the whole Bosnia adventure was a disaster, in that it was the golden opportunity to shock Europe back into seriousness, yet once again Uncle Sam stepped in to set things right (well, sorta). Abandonment + proximal threat (China and NK) has succeeded in accelerating a return to normal security perspectives and behaviors in Japan, where the pacificism was imposed, formal, and worked perfectly in the Cold War alliance set-up. Europe? Outside the former Bloc, where understandably adult rationality abounds on security matters, nada.

But I am quite blase about Russia's bellicosity of late. In fact I think Putin's ambitions are mostly realized, and that Ukrainecan actually be viewed as mostly a defensive move, from the long-standing and admittedly slightly kooky paranoid Russian perspective. Actually Putin is missing an obvious and major move he should have already made.

Japan is ripe for the plucking, and makes perfect sense - a charm offensive there much more serious than the actual current one. Return the islands, or a few of them, agree to share revenues/development of energy resources there, etc. This would have a huge impact in Japan (and should, really). All the while, smiling a broad grin at Beijing, with whom the Russkis are workingly surprisingly well of late. Anyway, if Putin's inner circle wants to pay me 100 large for my full Japanese rapprochement/Chinese encirclementstrategy, it's available .....

288 I've never traveled to Russia or China - yet I feel quite confident in commenting on geopolitical issues. I do not feel that Russia is an imminent threat as they were under the Soviet Union. But that does not mean that Russia is not a threat at all. Any student of history knows that Russia thinks of itself as an empire. And I welcome moves by Russia and China to become more capitalistic. Countries that are rich and trade with other countries are less prone to start wars - which is not to say that they won't. I worry about Russia and China for different reasons. The former is in a demographic death spiral - and I'm not sure what that will mean. The latter is probably starting their death spiral - but there will be many years of too many men and not enough women. That strikes me as a bad recipe.

Since absolutely nothing seems far-fetched or amazing any more, sounds about par for the course.

Haven't read his book yet, but one excerpt really shocked me. I believe Oren writes that the Israeli top leadership was "shocked" when it became clear Bambi was not serious about stopping the mullah's nuke program.

WTF? I simply cannot imagine that anyone in the Israeli leadership (even the squishier less impressive ones) would be the least bit surprised by this, or even that they ever took US seriousness, uh, seriously.

A 17-year-old invented an ingenious way to instantly stop bleeding

Imagine
this: you're gushing blood. Nothing seems to make it stop. Then you
apply a gel to your wound, and within seconds, the bleeding stops. In
minutes, you're healed.

This is the premise of VetiGel, an
algae-based polymer created by Joe Landolina -- a 22 year-old who
invented the product when he was just 17.

Landolina is now the
co-founder and CEO of Suneris, a biotech company that manufactures the
gel. Last week, Suneris announced that it will begin shipping VetiGel to
veterinarians later this summer. Humans won't be far behind."

I thought they were already using something like this in Iraq and Afghanistan to get blood clotting and reduce bleeding. I think it was a powder made from something like ground up shrimp shells or something like that.
