Sen. Lindsey Graham on Friday said the Confederate flag is part of the heritage of his home state of South Carolina, rebuffing calls for it to be taken down after a mass shooting in the state.

"Well, at the end of the day it's time for people in South Carolina to revisit that decision. [That] would be fine with me, but this is part of who we are," Graham said on CNN when asked if the flag should stop flying at the Statehouse. "It works here, that's what the Statehouse agreed to do. You could probably visit other places in the country near some symbol that doesn't quite strike you right."

The secretive federal court that oversees the nations spies is laying the groundwork for temporarily reauthorizing the National Security Agencys (NSA) sweeping collection of U.S. phone records.

In an order released on Friday, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court said that a brief lapse in some Patriot Act provisions would not bar the court from renewing the NSAs powers.

An imam who the authorities believe acted as a recruiting sergeant for a terrorist group has had his electronic tag removed after a British judge ruled that it was a breach of his human rights.

Lawyers for the suspected extremist, who lives in this country, successfully argued that it breached the European Convention on Human Rights because the suspect believed it was a bomb and contained a camera.

Mr Justice Collins, sitting in London, ruled that requiring the man to continue wearing the ankle tag, which is slightly larger than a sports watch, breached his human rights because his mental illness and delusional thoughts had grown worse.

The IRS Loses Again

Z Street may soon get to see why the agency sat on its application.

The story of IRS targeting of conservative groups that disagreed with Obama Administration policy isn't over. On Friday the IRS lost another big battle, as the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a viewpoint discrimination lawsuit against the agency can proceed. Next stop, discovery.

The lawsuit began when the Pennsylvania-based pro-Israel group Z Street applied for tax-exempt status in 2009. When Z Street called to inquire about its application, it says an IRS agent said the agency had a policy that required Israel-related applications to get extra scrutiny in a special unit in Washington. Z Street sued in federal court but the IRS claimed the Anti-Injunction Act prevents suits meant to evade the collection of taxes and because the IRS was protected by the doctrine of sovereign immunity. The IRS lost in district court but appealed.

Last month we told you about the oral argument at the D.C. Circuit when appellate judges Merrick Garland, David Tatel and David Sentelle were appalled by the IRS argument. Is the agency's position really that "the IRS is free to discriminate on the basis of viewpoint, religion, race [for 270 days]?" Judge Garland asked, "You don't actually think that?" The court's decision on Friday echoed those sentiments.

56 The IRS now has seven days to appeal (Z Street v. Koskinen) to the full circuit court. The agency has been using every tool to delay the lawsuit to get through the last days of the Obama Administration. But if this long-shot fails, Z Street may soon be able to begin discovery, and Z Street says it will seek every document and communication within the IRS as well as between the IRS and other parts of the government germane to its lawsuit or to the special policy regarding pro-Israel groups.

Turn empty Catholic churches into mosques, French Muslim leader says

France's top Muslim official has suggested turning empty or abandoned Catholic churches into mosques, saying as many as 5,000 are needed for the country's Muslim population - the largest in Europe.

"It's a delicate issue, but why not?" Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grand Mosque in Paris and the president of the French Council of Muslim Faith, told Europe 1 radio on Monday.

There are currently about 2,500 mosques in France with another 300 under construction, but the number falls short of what is needed, he said. With roughly 5 million Muslims in France, at least 5,000 mosques are needed, Boubakeur said.

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Costly
A New York scheme to force small business to unionize.

Tammany Hall is supposedly long gone, though sometimes it's hard to tell. For three years community organizers have struggled and failed to unionize New York City's car wash industry. So the new Boss Tweeds are imposing their agenda instead.

The activists at an outfit called Make the Road New York, who claim to speak for Latinos and the working class, claim car washes exploit labor. They have joined with City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to write a bill to annex the 130-odd independent car washes across the five boroughs.

The local law requires owners to purchase a $150,000 surety bond and undergo "moral character" reviews to certify compliance with state and federal labor and environmental regulations. Owners can avoid this ransom and post a bond of merely $30,000---but only if their shops are unionized. Naturally, the law sailed through the City Council last week, 43-7, and Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign it in the coming days.

"Plain and simple, this is a legislative extortion scheme," says Steve Rotlevi, the owner of Zoom Car Spa in Brooklyn and leader of the Association of Car Wash Owners. Similar Gotham businesses like laundromats need only post bonds between $500 and $5,000, while debt collection agencies and tow truck operators pay between $5,000 and $25,000.

Mr. Rotlevi adds that council members "know full well that we will not qualify and can't afford a $150,000 bond, which is why they are requiring it: to force this industry into mass unionization."

There will be back and forth. But her Democratic opponents will not attack her character, her history, her financial decisions, her scandals. They will not go at her personally. She will emerge dinged but not damaged. No one will ravage the queen.

The Republican primary, on the other hand, will be all hell bursting loose. The candidates will spend the next year tearing each other apart on everything and anything. Super PACs are furiously raising money, some of which will be used to take down and slam GOP opponents in negative ads and videos.

At least a few of them will do what Newt Gingrich so effectively did to Mitt Romney in South Carolina in 2012. Mr. Gingrich hit hard on Mr. Romney's investment firm, Bain Capital, and his tax returns. He painted Mr. Romney as a cold, rapacious capitalist who'll close your factory and take your jobs. ...

Here it should be noted that Republicans often speak of Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment, "Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican." He didn't mean don't attack them. He himself tried to take out a sitting Republican president and went at Gerald Ford hammer and tongs---on the issues. It was never personal, and it had nothing to do with "oppo." It was about great questions, not small people. That's not only how to win, it's how to win with meaning.

we see this coming

The Democrats have an enforcement mechanism to keep all their candidates in line. Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley know without being told that the party will kill them if they tear apart the assumed nominee. Their careers will be over if they go at her personally.

and

A GOP opposition-research veteran said of the Democrats' enforcement mechanism, "As an upstairs-downstairs party, the upstairs is a fairly concentrated place. The Democrats as the 'in' party---the party of Silicon Valley and academia---has interlocking pools of money, brains and talent." When they turn on you, it is like facing "the Death Star." And "on top of that, you have the Clintonian tropism toward score settling and vengeance. What you have in the end is discipline."

The Republicans? "They stand to beat the hell out of each other for months to come."

93 Here's George Will on McDonald's recent decision to become a "Progressive Burger Company":

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/419924/why-

does-mcdonalds-want-rebrand-progressive-burger-

company-george-will

As usual he kind of tiptoes through the issue, but here's the thing-

Last week, I was in a hurry and needed to grab a fast burger for lunch.

McDonald's is just down the street from where I work and it would have been very easy to stop there.

But, since they are branding themselves as a political entity hostile to people like myself,

I drove out of my way to go elsewhere.

This can't end well for them and pretty much stinks of their failed efforts like the "McLean" to assuage people who don't eat at their restaurants.

They need to remember the hysterical mattress grrrls and pajama boys of the Left never eat at McDonald's.

Even ironically.

Within 24 hours, the couple filed a discrimination complaint through the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.

97 Meanwhile, in Pommyland:

An imam who the authorities believe
acted as a recruiting sergeant for a terrorist group has had his
electronic tag removed after a British judge ruled that it was a breach
of his human rights.

Lawyers for the suspected extremist, who
lives in this country, successfully argued that it breached the European
Convention on Human Rights because the suspect believed it was a bomb
and contained a camera.

Mr Justice Collins, sitting in London,
ruled that requiring the man to continue wearing the ankle tag, which is
slightly larger than a sports watch, breached his human rights because
his mental illness and delusional thoughts had grown worse.

Sort of the way I think a form 1040 is a document that could blow up in my face and take a picture of me while it is doing that. Cis-normative sanity required by the state that can't legally require me to be able to read.

Interesting point: if the state can't legally require a person to be able to read, how can it legally require that same person to understand the law? I'm sure the applicable legal theory for that is: "Shut up".

I've been stopping at McDonald's for breakfast on my way to work for years. It's directly on my way, and it's a good franchise with good workers.

There is a Chik-fil-A that is inconveniently located, and would require going out of my way. I would have to leave home earlier in order to stop there and still get to work on time.

But I'm thinking about it.

If a loyal customer like me is having these thoughts, this is going to kill McDonald's.
