Overnight Open Thread (6-18-2015) - Oh Come On It'll Be Fun Edition

Quote of the Day

I try to stay chipper about Rachel Dolezal and the rest of this stuff, but it's not really funny, is it? More and more levers of civilization appear to be in the hands of the clinically insane.

-- Mark Steyn

Well we are in the Crazy Times. But the good news is that they won't last. Because they can't. The bad news is something will eventually bring the Crazy Times to an end and if we're lucky it'll just be very unpleasant.

Hillbilly Banjo Band Heckles Marathon Runners

Thank you Internet!

I thought this was all a put on at first but after watching I think these might in fact be actual native hillbillies indulging in authentic hillbilly pastimes. The look on the runner with the purty mouth they abducted  is priceless. And then you have dancing axe guy.

This happened about 9 miles from where my parents live and according to them the hillbilly problem has been exceptionally bad this year forcing them to spray every two weeks and set out traps regularly.

Blumenthal Email Confirms: Libya Was To Be Hillary's Crowning Accomplishment

This memo is dated August 22, 2011, immediately after the fall of Qaddafi's government. It is interesting for several reasons. First, it shows Blumenthal giving Hillary political advice. Second, it confirms that Libya was intended to be Hillary's great accomplishment as Secretary of State, for which she was to take full credit. Third, it is striking how Blumenthal's comments about Libya sound as though he was talking about Iraq.

And here's the text of the sycophantic email Blumenthal sent her:

First, brava! This is a historic moment and you will be credited for realizing it.

When Qaddafi himself is finally removed, you should of course make a public statement before the cameras wherever you are, even in the driveway of your vacation house. You must establish yourself in the historical record at this moment.

The most important phrase is: "successful strategy." .

This is a very big moment historically and for you. History will tell your part in it. You are vindicated.

French government warns its citizens not to make sex jokes when visiting America

'It's recommended to adopt a reserved attitude toward those of the opposite sex,' the site says. 'Comments, behavior, and jokes, which might be harmless in Latin countries, can lead to criminal cases.'

They even advise citizens traveling with small children to only use the restrooms of their gender, since even minors can be accused of sexual harassment.

FIFA's Vanity Project, 'United Passions,' Is The Lowest-Grossing Film Of All-Time

Bad timing man, really bad timing. Also further evidence that they had way more ill-gotten money than they knew what to do with.

I'll be honest, I didn't know much about United Passions before today, and that seems to be a common theme. FIFA's $30 million, self-funded puff piece starring Tim Roth as Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA head who resigned in disgrace at the beginning of the month, depicts Blatter as a heroic corruption fighter and ends with "Blatter being reelected to a standing ovation as the music swells."

Talk about timing! And as if Americans needed help caring less about soccer. In any case, United Passions is now the lowest-grossing film to have opened in at least 10 theaters, having failed to break four figures ($918 ) before being pulled by its distributor, Screen Media Films. As far as Europe trying to get rid of its junk, they could've made more selling a used Vespa.

Before that, Dad was at Rickover's Nuclear Power School, in Idaho Falls, ID. Can draw floor plans of both those houses, and remember the neighbor's names from when we lived on Royal St.

All my schooling was spread around San Diego, CA, and Buena Park & Fullerton, in Orange County.

Went into the USAF soon after graduating in '76.

The Army loved it but didn't think they'd be able to handle the demand, so they "wink wink, nudge nudge just happened" to leave copies of the plans laying around at a demo for the big manufacturers like Willys-Overland and Ford, who then miraculously came out with their own designs.

I saw one, they were out of circulation for 20 years and then just sort of surfaced.

Of course they could have been put aside and then paid out for the Clinton's re-election instead, if I wanted to spin a conspiracy theory.

In my experience they've been very solid and reliable. I had a 1992 Jeep Cherokee that ran well with few problems. And the guy I sold it to is still driving it. My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee has also been pretty much trouble-free.

The only issue was an AC leak that was corroding the transmission seals but this was fixed for free under a recall and they also included a transmission flush with it. My only complaint about my Jeep is the less than stellar gas mileage.

263 So, today's little piece of security fun involved actual, physical security. When we went off to our godson's HS graduation last weekend, I couldn't figure out how to bypass the broken "Zone 10" on our ADT alarm system, said "fuck this" and went without arming it....then got all hyper-paranoid that THIS was the weekend we'd get broken-into and the fiancee would be saying "I told you so" for the rest of my misbegotten life.

It was with some relief that I found we hadn't been robbed when we returned on Saturday night....and eagerly awaited Tuesday's ADT appointment. Which they blew-off.

On Wednesday's rescheduled ADT appointment, the guy got there and said, "where'd you get this panel, an antique store?" and spent 40 minutes on the phone to his boss. Then I spent 5 minutes on the phone to his boss, after which I was assured that things would start at 9 am today.

Now the funny thing about this -- if you do remodeling, you're supposed to call ADT to get things patched-up afterward, which is a full-cost-to-you dealio. But there is a "Quality Service Plan" that costs $7/month.....and if I signed-on to this, they'd bring my current system up-to-snuff for $100 to initiate the service. Naturally, I signed up for this, because my internal estimate for the fix was $400-$500.

So, they showed up this morning with an entirely new panel, entirely new system, sensors galore, and two of them spent 3 hours putting all the stuff in and together. I found out that the roofers I had told to preserve the alarm wires had run 'em over; the HVAC guys I'd told to preserve the alarm wires had squished 'em, the window conversions that had saved the wires couldn't have wired sensors, and the window I'd replaced in 3 days instead of 10 because the fiancee was flying home early couldn't be wired, either.

All told (and I believe it's in the ballpark), the installers told me I got a $2,000 system rebuild for $100, and $84/year. And now, I've got a fully-effective kickass alarm system that actually works and does fire and cops. The only thing it's missing is randomly spaced laser beams criss-crossing the living room.

First, no, ace (yes I know he's in Stage III sleep but I'm going in chronological order here and the whole day was spent happily at the range), I do *NOT* understand one nanoscopic bit that a black person might engage tribal feelings and blah blah blah have some special reaction to the insanity in SC. F**k that. F**k everything remotely close to that. If that is even a passing thought about your possible reaction to such an event, please either 1) kill yourself or 2) leave the country.

Oh, BTW, today there were two particularly funny and friendly black guys at the range blasting away. Oddly, it didn't seem they were feeling the least bit tribal about the superficial characteristics of insane killers or their victims a continent away. And apparently guns were not suddenly icky today, either.

Second, GOP "saving" O-care (DrewM post). Haven't had much time to read the comments lately. Have our traditional GOP apologists - who exhibit a lack of practical political understanding, to put it mildly - attempted any amusing rationalizations for the GOP tweaking and saving a disastrous and wildly unpopular govt. atrocity that they ceaselessly claim to want repealed?

Third, Maet, I want to know where your optimistic calculations come from. The "crazy times" as you of course understand are not limited to silly pop cultural crap like Jenner or absurdities on the margins like NAACP personalities. How exactly will the crazy times - on consequential matters - end? O-care repealed and "replaced" by actual, sensible, obviously needed deregulation and withdrawal of tax-code poison from health finance? The SCOTUS - or most federal courts - will again be even occasionally serious courts, and not just unaccountable super-legislatures for dummies? Your average NPR listener will somehow rise above the level of a dim provincial Soviet in 1970 who believes Radio Moscow on big issues?

I make no predictions. I share every last one of your preferred outcomes, I'll bet. I just don't see anything - anything - in the relevant recent past to indicate that craziness, or loathsome un-American behavior and mindsets will lose their grip on the civic culture.

Not impossible, by any means. Just that if you go with vastly more HP, torque, and engine mass than the original had, you will have to make other parts stronger, too.

You have to consider, too, what your intended use of the modified Jeep is going to be. You can put a small-block Chevy in a Jeep, but having 275 HP on tap isn't going to help you if the engine is red-lined at 65 MPH on the freeway.

391 I got home late this afternoon and went to check the storm damage to my backyard. I encountered 3 armadillos. Knowing that they carry disease, I tried throwing a stick at them to run them off. They came for me.

I pulled my carry gun and started backing away, threatening to shoot - as if armadillos speak English. Two finally hopped under my deck, but the last kept coming for me. I didn't want to shoot, because there were kids in the street on the other side of my house. The gunfire could've caused some wet pants. I squealed a little girlishly and retreated from the leprous thing, while holding a gun in my hand. It was humiliating.

393 Night, Tammy!

Rhomboid, if it helps, there is a way of seeing the shape of the problem that offers hope.

The perspective of a performing musician is rather unusual, in that in encapsulates at least three things of note:

First, where normal people see approaching nastiness and say "oh, sh!t, we're all gonna die!" and back away as far from the edge as they can, a performer will say "Oh, look, a boundary condition, I wonder how close I can get to it without falling over the edge?" and go find out.

Great performers have a way of taking their audiences out over the edge, showing them something transformative, and then bringing them back intact and inspired. This is a helpful mindset for dealing with intractable problems.

Second, classical musicians are really very much like machinists. We read a musical blueprint, and then try to reproduce a sonic architecture with great fidelity to some remarkably close tolerances. The ability to machine musical technique out of the potential of our bodies is an essential aspect of performance. I get your machine brain, really I do!

Third, musicians must walk both sides of the scientific fence. In building our technique, we play by the rules of science: formulate a question, work out a way of testing it, control everything possible, run the experiment, and then live or die by the data that results. There is no other way to gain competence.

On the other hand, we are routinely professionally asked, "I don't care how you do it, just get me this result," which is almost an anti-scientific approach. We often do both halves, scientific and anti-scientific, at the same time...

The point, then, is that working within this triple perspective offers some rather unusual insights into the structure of what is going on, societally speaking, and into what we might do about it.

Actually, this is all that I think about.

Piercello, you're a thoughtful guy and, it would appear, a citizen. A real citizen.

Funny, I recall how among the Soviets most able to escape their reality without actually escaping (i.e. defecting), classicalmusicians were prominent. They didn't have to be super-stars, like Nureyev, who became almost nomenklatura and thus escaped in a different sense (well, he actually defected, but you get my point).

I once saw Mezeppa performed at the Kirov on a Sunday afternoon in Leningrad. That's my classical music highlight (for total experience). Along with meeting Yehudi Menuhin backstage at the Kennedy Ctr. I'll never forget shaking his hand. His hand was as soft as a baby's. Still amazed and puzzled by that.

412 Armadillos 3

Old Hob -1 (for the girly squeal of terror, natch)

For those keeping score. Hob, if you were armed with a .22, you were very wise to not shoot as there's a good chance it might ricochet off. Seems like I read of an actual case of this recently.

A buddy of mine asked if I thought shooting one with a pellet rifle would work (he lives in city limits, so no go bangs allowed). I said...

What part of the word ARMORdillo do you not understand?

It's really nice. Little bored, honestly. Yesterday we drove into San Jose and down to Cabo San Lucas. Did some shopping and did what we always do in Mexico-got away from the tourist areas and look for street food. Found a little place in a working class area. I had heart tacos for lunch, good stuff. Antojito food is the best.

Today we laid around the pool, weather was a bit cooler than yesterday, so that was cool. The "ONT brought to you by" graphic struck a chord. There's only so much laying around you can DO, y'know?

We rented a Nissan March which is a pretty cool car if you just want transportation. No Anti lock brakes, so lucky we didn't run into any ice patches. Other than that I liked it in a 1960s VW Beetle way. Drove 120 Kim and the gas gauge didn't even dip a bit.

Yeah, but I've always wanted to go to the peninsula jutting out west from Scammon's Lagoon. The north-facing beaches there are rumored to the amongst the best places for beachcombing in the world, as they stick way out into the Pacific and catch the Japan current and all kinds of crazy stuff washes up. And since it's so isolated, with practically no roads or access, no one else ever finds the stuff before you because no one else is around.

It's literally right on the border between Baja and Baja Sur.

But I guess most people aren't into beachcombing, I realize.

On the south-facing shores of Dorset in Southern England a few years ago, shipping containers washed ashore containing...motorcycles! New, from the factory. Hundreds of them.

Quite the comical scene as the bobbies futilely tried to stop the locals from driving away on them. (Cue "Yakety Sax.")

Apparently they had fallen overboard off a passing container ship, and the captain hadn't even noticed until months later when they docked in a foreign port.

510 "Wisconsin city bars use of kangaroos as service animals"

My brain totally misparsed that. I took it to mean that pubs in Wisconsin were using domesticated kangaroos in order to serve customers, which would be cool, not that the city had explicity declassified them as service animals.

This will undoubtedly be a big blow to ace, who will now have to give up his therapeutic quokka.

There are a couple of hospitals near me that I wouldn't go to if my life depended on it, and it usually does. One is the hospital for Riker's Island, our local jail, and the ER there is simply crap what with the prisoners handcuffed to beds and the cops standing around taking up space.

Did I mention I fucking hate 404Care?

I assume you hate the VA worse than I hate hospitals because at least I have a limited choice of hospitals. But not having family and being in a hospital often means one is treated like shit. To find a hospital in Queens where that isn't the case is a blessing.

I know my Dad didn't use the VA because they sucked. My parents paid for non-VA treatment. That always pissed my Mom off considering all the promises that were made to the military way back when; my dad was Navy 1940-62, finally getting out after being delayed by The Cuban Missile Crisis.

599 I see that another local gentleman of color was arrested for possession of a handgun, while being a prior felon.

Very nice photo of a P-64 that was found in his home during the follow on search.

Wonder what they are going to do with it.

Sort of like last year, when they arrested a guy with a loaded Nagant pistol. Even had the correct ammo in it.

I was forced to watch a half-hour of teevee news last night. After "covering" the shooting, the victims, and Choom Boy's rant, they went into full history-of-every-murder-of-a-black-person-ever and a sermon designed to make every white person slit their wrists because their race had produced a drugged-up little fuckwit like Roof.

Cue the Sad Piano.

News flash: I refuse to acknowledge him as a member of my "race." I would cheerfully pump the death-juice into his veins. No president -- and certainly no bimbo newsreader or Wise Veteran Commentator -- can make me feel as if I am in any way responsible for the shooter.

If the NBC Persons of Sympathy dared say that crap to my face, I'd spit in theirs. That goes for Choom Boy, too.

629 Neo Neos-cons article is excellent and she wasn't calling for stricter drug control. She just mentions the side effects of a number of drugs Roof was on include violence and interesting enough, tongue protruding from the mouth.

648 There is a lovely song, "Peace, perfect peace-in this dark world of sin, the love of Jesus brings us peace within."

I'm sure other Christians are praying for brothers and sisters who were the victims of this terrible violence in SC. Let us be in prayer for their families, friends and other church members. I am giving thanks to law enforcement who apprehended the suspect quickly and thus prevented further violence.

As a Christian and as pastor ,I think only long term answer to this kind of senselessness is inner transformation-the heart of each individual being transformed by the love of Jesus Christ. Whether people invoke His Holy Name or not, everyone who does deeds of love and kindness walks in his footsteps. The Lord we honor; the Lord we love. My prayer is for the love of Christ to touch every heart of every person, so that senselessness may end, and that the will of God-which is directed towards His children's good-may cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.

I don't have T.V. I think I need to take a break from the internet for a while too.

God bless you and keep on praying!
